Being Lucky is Okay

We love to talk about the Gang Green defense. That group was truly something special in 1991, finishing #1 overall and just dominating opponents all season long. Unfortunately that group didn’t get to play in the postseason, despite finishing 10-6. Randall Cunningham got hurt early in the season opener. Jim McMahon went 9-3 in games he started or played most of. When he was hurt we had to watch Jeff Kemp, Brad Goebel and Pat Ryan throw 5 TDs and 15 INTs as they went 1-3.

The 1991 Eagles went 7-1 down the stretch. If they had gotten into the playoffs, who knows what might have happened. But they didn’t get in. Both the Eagles and Niners went 10-6 and missed the playoffs. It was one of those years where teams were either really good or really bad. Having to play a 3rd, 4th and even 5th string QB proved to be too much to overcome.

The 2008 Eagles went 9-6-1. They needed tremendous luck to get into the playoffs. On the final day of the year, I was a nervous wreck. I switched between CHI-HOU and OAK-TB, praying the outcomes would be the ones the Eagles needed. The 9-6 Bears took a 10-0 lead on the 7-8 Texans, which sent me into panic mode. But QB Matt Schaub played well and led Houston to a 31-24 win.

The Tampa game was even scarier. The 4-11 Raiders, on the road no less, took a 14-7 lead into halftime. Then Jeff Garcia and Cadillac Williams got going and Tampa took a 24-14 lead in the early 4th quarter. Ugh. My friend Matt had to talk me off the ledge a few times in that game. Oakland came back with a vengeance and went on a 17-0 run. PBR for everyone!!!

The Eagles had two teams do dirty work for them and that led to the 44-6 destruction of Dallas that we all remember ever so fondly. One magical day with three wild games and the Eagles were playoffs bound.

The 2008 Eagles were lucky in getting into the playoffs. But once there, they played like they belonged and barely missed a trip to the Super Bowl.

The 2015 season has not gone according to plan. The Eagles were expected to be one of the better teams in the league, but sit at 3-4 coming off their bye week. This would be really bad if the Eagles weren’t in the NFC East.

But they are. And that’s lucky for them.

The Giants lost on Sunday. So did Dallas. The Skins had a bye.

NYG Β 4-4
WAS Β 3-4
PHI Β 3-4
DAL Β 2-5

That is one ugly division. It lessens the blow of the slow start for the Eagles. Think about how big Sunday night could be for the Eagles. If they beat Dallas, the team would be back to .500 and would all but bury Dallas at 2-6, meaning they would need to go 7-1 to have a shot at the postseason.

Can the Eagles get hot?

Let’s also not forget the Eagles have had a tough schedule to this point. They have only played three home games so far. The Falcons and Jets have been surprisingly good this year. Dallas had Tony Romo when the Eagles played Dallas. The Panthers are undefeated. The Giants were red hot when the Eagles dominated them. And going against Drew Brees is never easy.

Some have pointed out that they don’t want the Eagles to back into the playoffs. I agree with that. I’d love for the team to get hot and finish 11-5 or 10-6 and look like a contender. If that doesn’t happen and the Eagles continue to be up and down, but somehow still make the playoffs, I won’t apologize for that.

The 1991 team was unlucky. The 2008 team was lucky. You need to take advantage of things when they break your way. Obviously the first choice is to handle your own business and earn your way in, but that doesn’t always happen.

This Eagles team has been dealt some favorable circumstances. Over the final nine weeks of the season, we’ll see if they take advantage of the situation.

Watching Newton pull one of his taunting show off moves after a designed run, then watching it get called back after a hold, was priceless. Save the bullshit for touchdowns, and at least wait until it’s official.

I actually get the sense that off the field he’s a perfectly nice guy, but man, on the field, he just seems like such a poor winner. Of all the guys to start doing jumping jacks and posing like Superman after a first down, the last guy you’d expect to pull that crap is the QB.

That 2008 run was pretty magical.

I do wonder if that actually set us back. Had TB beat Oakland and we missed the playoffs, the transition from McNabb to Kolb would most likely have begun that off-season.

Who knows what would have happened? If McNabb is gone, does AR sign Vick in 2009?

  39. 39 ChoTime said at 8:55 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

    Agree in hindsight.

At that point in 2008, I was done with #5. Ready to move on. Kolb was unproven, but McNabb was awful against CIN and BAL.

  41. 41 ChoTime said at 10:13 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

Maybe what set us back was the fools’ gold era of Mike Vick. As much as I respect his rehabilitation and story, his career as a QB has been underwhelming. Aside from that magical “Starship 7” run of games, he has been no better than average and never good enough to to go all the way.

    …..
Last year CK said he knew during the season that the team he had is not a team he thought he could win with, even after a pretty good year. So, he blew up the team. Who knows what CK is thinking this year. Maybe he likes Bradford and will give him 7 years 90 mil.

  53. 53 Ark87 said at 12:09 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

I don’t think anyone is saying, “Look this is just like the year XXXX, and that was great, so that’s what is going to happen!”. Those occurrences are rare, but it’s the reason teams never write off the season in favor of selling out for next season. It’s the reason we as fans don’t turn into pathetic lumps 7 games into the season.

All it is, is a proof positive, to show we aren’t hoping for something unprecedented.

Eagles haven’t been lucky or played well at all in any game. They are game behind a team the destroyed 27-7 despite all of the above. I feel about as good as anyone can feel about being 3-4.

  57. 57 Gary Barnes said at 10:48 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

Disagree about the Eagles’ tough schedule so far.

I’ll give you ATL and CAR, but otherwise we lost to WSH with Cousins as their QB, we lost to DAL without Bryant, Scandrick, McClain, Hardy, Gregory and Leary. in both games, we made their defenses and offenses look all-world. The Eagles offensive performance vs DAL was probably the worst I’ve ever seen in 30+ years of watching football.

The Jets we barely beat with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their QB. Saints are a horrible team and Brees was banged up when we played them. Giants played like absolute garbage in all phases against us and just gave up 7 TD to that horrible Saints team! They could not stop a wheelchair team, their defense stinks.

We have two tough games remaining, NE and ARZ. The rest we should win. Will we? Who knows, but the schedule has been far from tough. It has been tough because we are a mediocre football team unfortunately.

  58. 58 eagleyankfan said at 11:59 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

agreed …. I don’t think Atlanta is that tough either…

  59. 59 botto said at 1:08 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

Jets are good, Atlanta is good.
we have way more then 2 tough games left.
    every game is tough.
Miami is no push over, bucs are getting better, we play redskins and giants, both tough games, buffalo is no slouch either.
The saints are decent too, they just beat Atlanta and NY scoring 52 points.
you can’t just say a team I horrible and make it so. most teams are tough enough to win any given sunday. cousins sucks, I guess, I mean everyone says so, but he plays well enough to win plenty and beats us no problem.

  60. 60 BobSmith77 said at 4:31 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

Agreed and they could a few matchup breaks including the Jets’ game (several injuries to key offensive personnel), Saints, and Giants.

If some things go there way, the Eagles go 9-7 and win the division. Just as likely they go 7-9 or 8-8 and are home again too in Jan. I just don’t have a good read on this team except that they are thoroughly mediocre and I don’t expect much better play out of Bradford.

  61. 61 SnatchMaster said at 11:00 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

If the Eagles are serious about bringing in Kaepernick then they better bring back Andy Reid because this Chip Kelly has now idea how to develop a QB.

  62. 62 Julescat said at 11:05 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

  63. 63 Gary Barnes said at 11:11 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

    makes you wonder

  65. 65 bsuperfi said at 11:11 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

So I’ve been thinking about all these Kaepernick rumors with him getting benched for Gabbert. My gut reaction against Kaep is pretty strong (both as a player and person), but I’m trying to think about this like a cold, logical Banner. I’ve started to wonder about the price.

Here’s what I can’t stop thinking about: (1) The QB market is overwhelmingly defined by scarcity, (2) Our current QBs really don’t look like the answer, (3) Kaep can obviously run, and his presence in the backfield could help our ground game finally take off, (4) If the ground game takes off, the passing windows open up, (5) Kaep played good ball with a strong defense and ground game, (6) I’ve been thinking since last year that the CK offense needs a running QB to not just be maximized but even just decently effective now that the rest of the NFL has “caught up,” (7) If Cam Newton could become a good enough passer, why not Kaep?, and (8) If talking about QB ceiling was fun before, it would be really fun now.

Ok, so Kaep has tons of warts. But if we don’t get this magical turnaround in the second half of the season, the Chip Kelly experiment may come to a close sooner than hoped. Having a running QB may be the most important element that we haven’t really tried (for a bunch of reasons, I don’t consider Vick’s time with CK as strong evidence either way).

In retrospect, I think this post may be a desperate call for help.

  66. 66 The original AG said at 11:14 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

Lets see how this team comes out of the bye week. Bradford played a decent game against the Panthers, I can’t blame him for all the drops. Lets see how he finishes the year before declaring he’s a bust.

That said. The regression Kap has went through over the last couple of years is really alarming. He doesn’t seem to have any field awareness right now. At Kap’s current contract number, I’d stick with Bradford and see if the 49ers flat out cut him.

  67. 67 bsuperfi said at 11:26 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

Yeah, I agree about the regression being really concerned. That’s the reason he was benched and potentially available in the first place. I guess the question is whether the risk is any more palatable than, say, Bradford’s risk now that we have some decent evidence on Bradford…and the cost (between Kaep’s contract and what we’d need to trade to get him).

  68. 68 HawaiianEagle said at 11:34 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

From everything I’ve ever read, CK wants “repetitive accuracy”. Not sure that describes Colin K. I’d like to see of Sammy can show us what CK sees in him.

  69. 69 Ark87 said at 11:48 AM on November 3rd, 2015:

As intriguing as Kaep might be, it’s a moot point (this season at the very least). Chip probably could make a pretty fun offense out of Kaepernick’s skill set. But he won’t adjust his offense to suit someone mid season, and Kaep has a 0% chance of being able to run the current iteration of the offense. Could we make it work? Yes. Chip won’t though. System-first

  70. 70 Corry said at 12:12 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

I can’t imagine the Eagles wanting to be on the hook for that contract either. It’s a big money. Some of that can be offset by cutting him prior to April 1, but I think we’d still be on the hook for $25M then.

RGIII is the same issue. If you trade for him, you owe him the $16M that’s guaranteed in the event of injury. It’s much better to see if they get cut then make a play for them in the off season.

  71. 71 Ark87 said at 12:37 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

I can excuse outsiders who haven’t been following the Eagles closely, but it blows my mind how 3 years later, self proclaimed “knowledgable Fanbase” that follow the Eagles 365 days a year hAvent learned anything and could even suggest that chip would EVER have any interest at all in working with Kapernick….it’s a new low for our “knowledgable Fanbase”..
    ..
Fans or Media who thnks chip would ever want a QB like Kapernick because he runs fast, and overlook the fact that he seriously Lacks Football IQ, lacks Football charchter, are officially HOPELESS… If you are someone who can’t grasp this simple concept by now. You never will…. KAp is one of the worst “leaders” among the starting QBs in the league. thinking Chip would EVER have any interest in Kaps lack of football Charchter at a position that is supposed to be the leader of the franchise is just flat out STUPID! No one can claim ignorance about this at this point, so if it’s not ignorance, it has to be flat out hard headed stupidity…
    ..
Johnny manziel. RG3; Kapernick, ater 3 years, to still think chip would ever have any interest in working with any of these hacks is just sad…if this is still a question at this point in time, then it’s hopeless and we will never learn…I’m blown away how this isn’t clear to every single person who has Followed this team the past 3 years..

I dont know why the Titans fired Ken Whisenhunt. He was 7 games deep into his second year as a HC with the team, can they not tell that its a disaster to have short fuse when it comes to firing you HC. I understand he has been terrible, but even not considering how bad the titans team was, how where they wowed so much by him that they hired him to be their guy, if the confidence it that low.

You either hire a guy who you actually believe in and give more than 23 games to turn around your shitty franchise, or you dont hire him at all if you can’t give him 23+ games.

Amateurs! Should have traded Mariota and taken two 1st. and two 2nds.

Also, that roster was pretty fucked. Rookie QB, no running backs, mediocre weapons and no OL. Decent from 7, overrated DBs. They just spent 2 off season letting Whisenhunt form the roster into his liking, now they’re starting over.

As our GM, could Chip technically trade himself (chip the coach) to the Titans?
    ..
It would be some real Al Pacino, any given Sunday type shit for ChiP to hold a press Confrence announcing that he has traded himself, Fletcher Cox and Lane Johnson to the Titans for two 7th round picks as he tells our media to kiss his ass on his way out…
    ..,
That is about as realistic as thinking Chip would EVER have any interest whatsoever in working with Kapernick… For those that haven’t noticed, chip puts a lot of emphasis in “Football Charechter” and “Football Intelligence” two areas Kapernick is below average in compared to the other starting QBs in this league.. I don’t get how anyone who follows the Eagles 365 days a year could think chip would have any interest at all in ever working with Kapernick, a guy who during tough times, reacts to adversity by alienating himself from the rest of his teammates refusing to talk to anyone in the locker room?
    ..
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry that people haven’t learned anything and still think chip would ever care that a QB runs fast when said QB has poor football Charchter and lacks leadership basically taking a piss all over his responsibility of being the face of the franchise and leader of the team after signing a contract making him a “Franchise QB”… Lol one of the worst leaders among starting QBs, average at best football Intelligence (and that may even be generous), still struggles reading defenses, lacks repetitive accuracy, but because the guy can run fast, his name keeps coming up when in reality Chip would NEVER let that Kid play the most important position Of the franchise.
    ..
If Chip was going to overlook EVERYTHING that really Matters because a kid can run around, we wouldn’t have passed on Manziel, and would have taken a flier on Terrel Pryor years ago who chip raved about as an Athlete going into the Raiders game..
    ..
It’s been 3 years and chip has brought in like 6 different QBs, so how is it even possible that our Fans think there is even a slight possibility that chip would have any interest in Kapernick? I’m comletely baffled by this. How this is even still brought up 3 years later makes us sound really stupid

  159. 159 TypicalDouche said at 3:19 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

I think this all stems from a couple of points. 1st – Chip coming from college always having a running QB, 2nd – He went with Vick initially in his first year. Neither of those points should mean that he wants a scrambling QB but some folks will never leave it alone.

  160. 160 ChoTime said at 3:21 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

I’ll leave it alone when he again has success with a non-mobile QB.

  161. 161 TypicalDouche said at 3:24 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

So clearly you are one of the few that are obsessing for Chip to get a running QB? What running QB has had a ton of success recently besides Russell Wilson, who rode a great RB and great defense to a superbowl?

  162. 162 ChoTime said at 3:33 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

Not obsessing, but having a running threat at QB improves the numerical advantage that Chip based his offensive principles around. That extra set of wheels is the one factor that gives Chip’s O an advantage over pro-style offenses. His best offenses in college–the reason the NFL wanted him was because of his offenses in college–featured mobile QBs. Give him a QB with wheels and his offense runs how it should. Give him a statue and he has to jury-rig something else.

Chip is a smart guy, and I won’t be surprised if he figures things out. But I like the 50 point games more than the 20 point games.

  163. 163 TypicalDouche said at 3:37 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

I understand where you’re coming from friend. I just don’t see too many running threats that are accurate throwers. Tyrod Taylor would of been nice just based on how he’s played this year. Kaepernick is not good and neither is RG3, who I think both will be available after this year. Outside of them who else is there? Maybe a draft pick? I don’t see it. If he can rebuild this offensive line I still believe an accurate pocket passer would be the best thing for this offense.

  164. 164 ChoTime said at 7:27 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

They are rare in the NFL, but I’m not sure why. NFL teams are just so conservative. They keep chasing the 6’4″ guy with a great arm, robotic accuracy, and genius ability to read defenses. But really, there are only a handful of guys like that. Maybe an agile 6’1″ guy who can be a point guard can successfully run an offense specifically set up for him. The upside is that people with that body and skillset are much more common.

  165. 165 TypicalDouche said at 7:31 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

Oh I agree Cho. Don’t get me wrong I’d love a guy that is accurate, smart, can read defenses, and can also run the ball. I think the closest to that is Aaron Rodgers. Like you said though they don’t come around too often. I would substitute a little height for a guy that possesses all those skills but finding that guy is step 1.

  168. 168 TypicalDouche said at 7:34 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

Tannehill hasn’t won anything yet. I am a big fan of his but when I meant success I meant more like playoff wins. A lot of QBs have great regular season success without playoff wins. The Panthers are having a great year but Cam is another who hasn’t had much playoff success, I think he has 1 win.

  169. 169 anon said at 7:37 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

not many qbs in the last 5 years w/ playoff success you’re really looking at the same names, flacco, manning, manning, brady, rodgers, wilson, kaep, rodgers on that list is limited, so is e. manning.

  170. 170 TypicalDouche said at 7:43 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

Ok so my initial argument was what running QB has had success recently outside of Wilson. I don’t count Kaepernick as he has been miserable since his playoff run and is now on the bench. GREAT NEWS is that AGHOLAR is back!!! THRILLED to get a much needed Boost to our WR corp….High ankle sprains can be serious injuries and I was worried that he would miss most of this season.. getting him back is BIGTIME. Hopefully the injury is completely behind him and he can remain healthy the rest of the year.. If the injury is completely behind him, I have no doubt that he will produce more than he did the first half Of the season, since the bar was set pretty low…HOW MUCH BETTER Is the real question…If Bradford continues to improve from the QB who was one of our best players in the Carolina game, I would think some big games are ahead for Agholar, especially since his slow start was more an issue of not being on the same page with a struggling QB, and not a case of struggling to create seperaation which is more typical of a Stuggling rookie WR… Agholar had a poor start to his eagke career, but getting open and creating seperaation hasn’t been the problem. And THAT gives me a lot of hope in our young WR..
    ..
SCARY WORRISOME NEWS is that Jason Peters wasn’t ready to Practice today. Coming off a bye week, having to get ready to match up and go to war against GREG Hardy who has been terrorizing QBs since he returns is very worrisome… Going into THIS GAME, Jason peters is more important than ever. Hardy is playing at a high level and he is a Nasty Son of a bitch that will try to end Bradfords season if we let him.. Typically I don’t wish serious harm on our opponents, but I wouldnt be upset to see harm done to Hardy because he is a vile, despicable human being who shouldnt even be allowed to make millons playimg a game…we are getting ready to get, revenge on a dallas team that’s struggling to score more than 12 points a game, but Peters not being full systems go today when he has such an Important matchup This week is very alarming. hopefully he shows up tomorrow. Ready To go and lookimg Phenomenal…. we,DESPERATELY NEED Jason Peters sunday night to look every bit of the Hall of Fame Body Guard who has been the best tackle of his era and have his best game of the year keepimg Hardy in check and away from Bradford.
    ..
As for KIKO, because I’m such a big fan and view him as one of our most talented young players who I hope will become part of the core of this eagle team for the next 6-7 years, I would prefer taking advantage of our ILB depth and sit KIKO the rest of the year Giving him the best chance possible to put the Knee trouble behind him once and for all… If he comes back and hurts his knee again this year, I will be really pissed off.. He seems intent on taking the field, I hope him and our Doctors know what they are doing, im more than willing to be extra prudent with such a talented young player, but since he is going to play, he better not have any more knee issues this year… Guys like Lane Johnson have had no choice because we depend on them so much since we really don’t have any real Tackles on our bench, so Lane can’t afford to sit out.. KIKO is fortunate that we have Mufasa, Simba, and Kendrcks that are all ready to play and can play at a high level, so he is the LAST player that should be rushing back or take the field at any point before being 100% healthy. Hopefully that is the case and KIKO will play the year out and not have any issues, that would be awesome..but if he has another serious knee injury this year, im going to be sick to my stomach..
    ..
Kemdricks showed some rust in Carolina, hopefully that’s all behind him and he can get his ass on the field and stay on the damn field the rest of the year and earn his new contract. His level of play ISNT an issue if he just stays healthy and doesn’t have to deal with setbacks.. He missed enough time already with his yearly pussy hamstring injury, Time to get his ass on the field and contribute to this drastically improved defense we are enjoying..our Defense played at a high level for the most part so far this year, exciting to think HOW MUCH better this front 7 can be when we add KIKO and KEndricks to the equation, kids that can really cover well, Blitz and explode against the run.. What’s really exciting is that with 4 ILbs playing so well, we should be able to rotate guys and really keep fresh ILb in the game at all times, as well as allowing us to use different guys in sub packages and be able to matchup against any weapons opponents bring to the table…
    ..
Can’t minimize the great impact of getting Mufasa back. We really miss him when we play against teams that are so reliant on their physical run game like the Pathers, and im sure the Cowboys will try to run the ball considering the mess that has been their backup QBs..
    ..
Hopefully all the injury Drama is behind us and we can stay healthy, come together and play up to the talent level of this roster

seth Joyner said he hopes the Eagles took Pope to see the wizard of Oz to get some Hands,,… desperately Need Pope to get it going.. ERTZ looks like he has started to heat up a bit, chip thinks that it’s due to ERTZ just now starting to get fully healthy and comfortable after rushing back from an August surgery..hopefully ERTZ shows a little more each week, I definitely seen Growth in his run blocking.. Sproles also needs to clean up some mistakes and start catching everything thrown his way… jordan can’t do it all even if he improves, NEED Nelson, Miles Austin and Coop to Make some plays since Im done expecting to be able to count on Huff, I like his talent, but I don’t trust him, and im done trying to predict when he will get his head out of his ass and be a consistent contributor to this team.. At this point, I trust throwing to Miles Austin more than Huff and that’s just sad.. Chip NEEDS to get his boy going, whether it’s a reverse to Huff, Linning him up in the backfield and letting him run a wheel route. Whatever, that’s chips boy,he needs to get him going ASAP.
    ..
jason Peters is CRUCIAL THIS WEEK! I also wish they would give Lane some practice reps on the Left side because if Peters has to miss snaps, I will be mortified to see tobin at LT trying to block Hardy from not murdering our QB
    ..
I like KIKO so much, that Id rather not let him play and give him more time to get over the knee issues… But best case scenario is I get to enjoy watching him kick cowboy ass, while also staying healthy and putting the knee issues behind him
    ..
our Offhse Needs to get its head out its ass this week. We know division games are dogfights, the Cowboys offense struggles to score more than 12 points a game, so you can bet the Cowboys Defense will be fired up and try to carry them to what would be a season saving win…. The Cowboys offense without Romo is the worst in the league by far. I don’t care how great any defense we face is, Chips offense BETTER score enough to beat a team averaging 12 points per game…
    ..
Not Only are we desperate for this win. We,can’t afford to lose another division game (tiebreakers) and if that’s NOT important Enough to Us, our OL has a chance to do right by Demarco Murray after How bad we let him down against Dallas When it meant so much to him, we OWE Murray this revenge win, and it would be even sweeter than Demarco imagined because if we beat the Cowboys, it would be the Final “curb stomping” that ends their season.., we beat Dallas and they need to go like 7-1 the rest of the way to stand a chance…
    ..
You can’t Ever be in a position where we NEED a win more than we Need to BEAT Dallas this week… Coming off a bye, this game being so important, a dallas offense that is struggling to reach 14 points, If the Eagles DONT win this game, don’t even come back to philly that night, lose this game, and they better stay in Dallas a few more days until we can get over it a bit…
    ..
For me, Losing to THIS Cowboys team would be ROCK BOTTOM and the official low point of the Chjp kelly era,,, we talk that MUST WIN shit each week… Maybe this isn’t a true “MUST WIN” game, but for me it’s a “your ass MUST NOT LOSE game”..

    ..
My understanding is that as of right now, we will have all hands on deck sunday night with a full healthy roster which would be great, hopefully we can ride the good health wave thru the rest of the season avoiding the serious injuries we saw league wide this past weekend

  205. 205 TypicalDouche said at 5:36 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

Agholor, now that is great news as he is much needed out there.

Fully healthy roster coming out of the bye is good but sustaining the health is more important. Really hope they don’t rush Kiko back in this game. With Hicks being an animal and Kendricks hopefully shaking off his rust last game and coming off the bye he should be fully healthy I really don’t see a need for Kiko to be on the field besides obvious passing downs.

Spoiler alert: At the 11th hour, Chip will announce that he traded for RGIII. When asked how that fits his repetitive accuracy and durability requirements, he will share that he also traded for Kaep.

The two will vie for Chip’s approval each week in practice, and game reps will be handed out based on his weekly evaluations. The player who earned the lion share of the reps will also take on punt returns, since Sproles is now in Washington, while the loser will be relegated to sub packages on offense and replacing Jenkins on defense, who is now a 49er.

    ..
Cam 260lbs vs Demarcus Ware 259lbs
    ..
Cam 4.58 Speed vs Laveon Bell 4:59

Cam 34 inch vertical compared to AJ Green 33.5
    ..
That’s a real freak of an athlete… He isn’t the efficient passer I would like to see from my QB, but Carolina is doing a great job of running the ball more than anyone (34 attempts per game), and they have found a formula that is working for them: Tough Defense. Commitment to an extremely physical run game and Cam is Manufacturing enough Big X plays to compensate for an efficient passing game..,Scary to think of how much more potent their X play offense can be with 6’5 Kelvin Benjamin And how much better that defense can be when they upgrade their safeties, old man Roman Harper(Big INT last night) and the scab we no well, Kurt Coleman…. Don’t let them get good safeties, they will be scary good defense…. jared Allen was such a tough addittion for that young and Talented DL..

What’s kind of eerie is how similar he is to Andrew Luck in measurables. But they are just so different. Cam’s athleticism shows. I don’t really think the elite athleticism that Luck tested at really translates to the field.

“But they are just so different. Cam’s athleticism shows.”

    careful

  212. 212 FairOaks said at 5:36 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

I think Cam is a thoroughly average QB when all is said and done. He really hasn’t changed much since his rookie year. He can win with that defense, but it will take a great defense. He’s an absolutely amazing athlete but his passing is just OK. He can heave it, but there is more to passing.

Luck… just don’t know. He hasn’t improved a ton since his rookie year, but he has won with some pretty bad defenses (and I’m beginning to suspect, bad coaching). Last game was absolutely bizarre — Luck could not throw a pass, literally, beyond say five yards in that rain. He was missing wildly, and balls were way over heads or way wide (not close to catchable), and a couple of times got intercepted because of it. Their offense was utterly miserable. Then like a switch, he turns it on late and gets pretty accurate again, and ties the game up. He was much better in that stretch than Cam has ever been. But he really should have won, and he threw a killer pick in OT. Cam makes fewer mistakes, for sure, though he still had a couple of turnovers. Cam also ran it way, way more than you would normally like — their offense did very little and were only ahead due to the short fields the turnovers got them. But that just may have been due to the sloppy conditions. Luck has a ton of talent, but he seems as far from putting it all together as he was his rookie year.

  213. 213 unhinged said at 8:10 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

If your conclusion is that Luck has more upside, or that Luck is more appealing for any given offense, I’d be in agreement. But labeling Cam “thoroughly average” strikes me as way off the mark. His efficacy as a QB is predicated on those freakish metrics as indexed in Geagle’s comment. His decision-making is sub-par, but his athleticism can overcome a passel of wrong reads and bad decisions. His running is a big edge in comparing his overall value to any other QB. He’ll knock over DT’s to get the first down. But the light does not shine on a running QB that absorbs that many body blows for very long. Luck will be hitting his stride when Cam’s value is waning.

  214. 214 anon said at 9:06 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

look at the qb who has been in the last 2 superbowls, think cam’s better than that guy. speaking of eli is a subpar qb that survived on running + defense + x plays.

  215. 215 FairOaks said at 12:40 PM on November 4th, 2015:

I label Cam “thoroughly average” based on his stats as a QB. His passer ratings have been very, very consistent his entire career — below the average for starting QBs. His running ability makes up some of the difference, but it never turns a mediocre passer into a great QB. In his career, he’s played very consistently. When the Panthers have a good defense, they have a winning record. When they have a subpar defense, they have a losing record. That basically says to me their offense is about average. Which, mind you, is better than many out there — he’s probably in the 10-15 range as a QB. Geagle’s metrics are purely his athleticism — they are indeed freakish, but they speak nothing about his efficacy as a QB, which is always far more about decision-making, reading defense, accuracy in throwing, etc. I don’t think Cam has really improved in those areas — definitely not awful, but not a strength either. He’s actually run a bit less every year, though looks like he’s on pace this year for his earlier rushing numbers (though a lower Y/A). You can definitely win with him — probably the same or a bit better than Flacco overall for example and he got a Super Bowl — but I don’t think he really makes players around him better, nor really carries the team on his back. Average is not the same thing as “bad” — that means you’re better than around half the starting QBs in the league.

  216. 216 unhinged said at 10:30 PM on November 4th, 2015:

I appreciate your argument, and I don’t want to just repeat my reaction to your previous comment, but efficacy as a QB is not to be distilled by statistics. As some wise person said, there are lies, damn lies and there are statistics, and if the freak can move the chains when they must be moved, convert the 4th and 1 when his team must have it, keep the drive alive when the game is on the line, drill the ball to a covered receiver when nobody is open, that is efficacious quarterbacking in my opinion. I agree that he is compromised as a pocket QB, and less than stellar in the long measure, but his capacity to make the necessary plays to win makes him a tough opponent and above average in my opinion.

  217. 217 FairOaks said at 12:06 AM on November 5th, 2015:

He can, but doesn’t always make it happen. You see the athletic potential to do things other QBs can’t, but he can’t do some bread and butter things that many QBs can, at least not at a high level. In 2011, his defense gives up 26.8 points a game, and Carolina goes 6-10. In 2012, defense give up 22.7 points a game, and Carolina goes 7-9. In 2013, they give up 15.1 points a game, and they go 12-4. Last year, defense gives up 23.4 points a game, and Carolina goes 7-8-1 (5-8-1 with Cam starting at QB). This year they are giving up 19 points a game, and they are cruising again. Granted, they have a pretty weak schedule — the last three games were the most impressive, beating the Seahawks, Eagles, and Colts. The rest of the way they have Green Bay then NFC South and NFC East and the Titans — not much unless the Saints are playing better, and the Falcons. Maybe the Cowboys as Romo would be back. I imagine they will cruise to the playoffs, but Cam is 1-2 in playoff games, only beating an Arizona team forced to play their 3rd string QB. Furthermore, when things weren’t going well, his public comments weren’t the best — I just don’t get the feel of a leader from him. Impressive physicality, but… is he really as good as Daunte Culpepper? I’m not sure he is. From my eye test, he’s a decent QB, but one that will struggle to have postseason success unless things really break right.

  218. 218 unhinged said at 10:23 AM on November 5th, 2015:

I can’t disagree with your skeptical take on Cam’s value…but, I would add that he looks better to me this season – in part because he is probably fully recovered from a serious vehicular accident, and he seems to be making fewer bad reads. I would take Newton any day over Culpepper. The latter is built like a LB, but has small hands (frequently fumbles), and fits the description “injury-prone”. But I’m with you on PS success potential for Cam. Until he displays a rhythm where his unit moves the chains and converts in RZ on a fairly consistent basis in the post-season, his legacy will be “freakish” but not great. Though, if his defense gets any better, he is good enough not to lose a Super Bowl.

  219. 219 FairOaks said at 4:21 PM on November 5th, 2015:

Indeed, it’s subjective. Culpepper played in most games through his sixth season (age 27), after which he was continually broken down. This is Newton’s fifth at age 26. If he keeps taking the shots he took in that rain game, I would worry about something similar happening to Newton eventually — but that game seemed outside the norm to me. Culpepper was much more liable to fumble, true, but also had much better passing stats for the most part (Randy Moss helped for sure, though Newton had Steve Smith for a few years there). It’ll be interesting to see how it goes. For me, I would agree that he’s “good enough to not lose a Super Bowl” — that is basically the level I’d put him at. Which is better than probably half the league or a bit more, but outside the top 10, I think. As always there is “tremendous potential” but five straight seasons of being almost the same quality QB I have my doubts he’ll get a whole lot better. I can’t disagree with your take either πŸ˜‰

    ..
the Bradford we saw In Carolina, can put up the serious points in this offense we have been waiting to see since the preseason… Praying that the Carolina performance was the moment we look back on as the point where Bradford turned the corner and started to get this offense going, instead of it being the anaomoly game when SAM just happened to play better than he normally does.. Tough to give a QB credit after a loss, but the level of play SAM showed against a solid carolina defense can take control of this division if we see THAT type of play the rest of the season…

Since Tuesday of last week, I’ve stopped reading any Philly media about the Eagles. I also stopped following ESP on Twitter.

BTW – ESP is the worst reporter of football I have ever seen. This is not hyperbole either. He’s just terrible.

Re: Legal Tip on Disability because of Mental Health Issues

A commenter joked below about ex-Cowboy RB Joe Randle being in the middle of a mental breakdown. (The comment could be read ironically.)

More to the point . . . Jerry Jones admitted, according to PFT.com, that the Cowboys organization perceives Randle to be suffering from mental health issues, bordering on a possible psychotic break from reality (my words).

    Why does that matter?

I’m no fan of Joe Randle.

But I’m a big believer in educating employees on their legal rights — the status of many (most?) of the commenters on this blog, I assume.

A couple of points then about the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”).

Under the ADA, a person cannot be fired, or suffer any other adverse job action, because of an actual or perceived disability — including temporary disabilities. And that includes a mental health issue.

Here, you have an employer acknowledging that a former employee — whom he just fired — appears to be mentally ill.

Why did the Cowboys fire Randle? Because of something he did last off-season? Dallas could have fired Randle when it happened if whatever happened was a problem. But didn’t.

What’s changed? Nothing. Except Randle’s mental health is now perceived —
by his employer — to have deteriorated.

Under the ADA, a rebuttable presumption arises that an employer acted unlawfully by firing an employee within days of commenting on that employee’s perceived (or actual) disability.

The other problem for the Cowboys is the apparent disparate treatment Randle received versus Dez Bryant and Randy Gregory.

A couple of years ago, Jones said the Cowboys want to provide “support” for Dez Bryant’s problems. And after the 2015 draft, the Cowboys acknowledged the team will help rookie Randy Gregory cope with his mental health issues.

Where’s Jones’s offer of support for Joseph Randle?
    ______________

To be clear, if an employee commits a crime like spousal abuse, that employee can be fired immediately — even if the employee’s actions were the product of a mental health problem.

Here, Dallas did not fire Randle last off-season when the alleged domestic abuse occurred. The Cowboys waited until Randle showed signs of mental illness.

Will Randle sue? He has 90 days to file a charge of Disability Discrimination with the EEOC. Without that filing, an ADA claim is barred.

He won’t sue. He wants to play in the NFL again.

But someone who reads this blog may suffer disability-based discrimination in the workplace. Hopefully, this comment is of some use.

Great post on several levels. I never even made the disability-firing connection with Randle. Welcome to the weird universe of sports leagues.

Great stuff ACV, great to have your input on this. I work in a mental health office and it feels like a different, secret, world, sometimes. We have a program called Partial Hospitalization, which is a day treatment program. We often have to have clients remind employers of such rights lol. Of course not without complications. Unfortunately you have to be willing to disclose some of the privacy protected by HIPAA laws to play such a card. The gap between the state of mental health in America, and how much we as a society understand it, is pretty large.

The only downside of the Cowgirls ending up to be like 4-12 or whatever is that now they’re in a prime position to take Ezekiel Elliot. People laugh at how taking running backs high isn’t worth it but look at Gurley. He’s averaging 141 yards for the last 4 games. Elliot is arguably better than Gurley too.

That is one thing that scares me. I’m hoping they play themselves into a pick in the 20s at least. Them grabbing another WR could also be problematic for us as well

  240. 240 JoeBlow said at 10:23 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

That’s what scares me a bit more than a RB….they could add both in next years draft. If they get a Receiver like Treadwell or Doctson to play opposite dez it could be a nightmare for defenses

  241. 241 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 10:30 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

We really need a nasty edge rusher to put our defense over the top.

I know a lot people are high on Rowe taking Carroll’s job next year, but I think he should move into Thurmond’s spot and we resign Carroll. I don’t want to reshuffle CBs.

  242. 242 JoeBlow said at 10:39 PM on November 3rd, 2015:

yea i’m all for BPA in theory, but i think they need to make an obvious effort to zero in on which OL/Pass rusher they are taking with the 1st rounder. I’ve made my feelings known about the OL class (think it’s a good one)

as for the secondary i would like to have Thurmond and Carroll back and have Rowe fight with them for starts, can’t have enough good DB’s

  246. 246 D3FB said at 10:50 AM on November 4th, 2015:

He’s a good back, he’s just not the same quality of back as Gurley.

Gurley would smash through loaded SEC boxes breaking multiple tackles and then house a kickoff the next drive.

Elliot plays in a more dynamic spread offense that gives him better angles and more space. He’s a very good back, but he’s not some unstopable monster that is going to put an NFL team on his back.
