Eagles Notebook: Eye on the Future

Chip the GM has to keep an eye on the future. Recently you’ve seen the Eagles making a lot of practice squad and roster moves. This is the time of year you want to secure players to be part of your roster for the offseason.
This week the Eagles cut CB Mike Lee and added Safety Craig Bills to the practice squad. The Eagles had a short look at Lee and obviously decided there was someone else they preferred to control. Bills played at BYU. He picked off 5 career passes and had 14 PBUs. Here is Gil Brandt’s Pro Day report on him.
Free safety Craig Bills (6-1 1/8, 205) ran the 40 in 4.48 and 4.52 seconds. He had a 33-inch vertical jump and 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.42 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.95 seconds. He also performed 19 strength lifts. Unfortunately, Bills was unable to complete his pro day workout. Midway through the pro day, Bills hurt his foot. If an NFL team is interested in acquiring Bills — most likely as a free-agent pickup following the draft — it would have to go back to work Bills out again when he’s healthy. Bills is reminiscent of former BYU defensive back and current Kansas City Chiefs member Daniel Sorensen.
The Eagles need depth at Safety. Ed Reynolds is coming off a promising game, but you need to see that kind of play from him on a regular basis to trust it. Jerome Couplin is still a player the team likes, but he’s not been able to get on the field, mostly due to injuries. Bills could give them competition in the offseason, assuming the Eagles like what they see in practice over the next few weeks.

Apparently Bills failed his physical with the Eagles and Mike Lee is still on the practice squad.
The Eagles did also work out Kyle Sebetic, but nothing came of that. Yet.
I forgot to mention Jaylen Watkins. I like him more as a CB, but the Eagles have talked about him as a S and CB. He could factor into the depth mix at either or both spots in the future.

The Eagles worked out CFL receiver Eric Rogers recently. BGN has the details.
There is no question that the Eagles need better receiver play in 2016. Adding a player like Rogers would be interesting. He has experience, but at the CFL level. He would be ahead of a rookie, but not on the same level as a typical free agent.
Rogers lists at 6-4, 215 so that is the kind of size Chip likes. Rogers is working out for almost half of the league so there will be competition for his services.

Nick Foles signed a 2 year, $24,540,000 contract with the St. Louis Rams, including a $3,000,000 signing bonus, $13,792,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $12,270,000.
That sounds reasonable for a QB, but as Jason said, all it takes is one other suitor to change things. If some other team falls in love with Bradford, things could get complicated in a hurry.

One thing to keep in mind as we talk about the QB situation is that the Eagles do have a young player already on the practice squad – Stephen Morris. Before you think I’ve gone nuts, I’m not saying Morris will be in the conversation to be a starter next year.
The Eagles have liked Morris enough to keep him around all season. That shows they have some interest in his development. He has a year in this system, which is invaluable. You’d rather him have some actual game experience, but practicing everyday and being in meetings is huge for young QBs.
The point with Morris is that his presence means the Eagles don’t have to force a pick on a young QB in the upcoming draft. If there is a player the team is very high on, go get him. But there might not be a player the front office really likes. Or those players may not be on the board when the Eagles pick. Morris gives them a young body at QB to keep developing.
Tony Romo sat for 3 years before he got on the field and became a star. Tyrod Taylor didn’t make his first NFL start until he left Baltimore and signed with the Bills this offseason. It doesn’t happen often, but late round picks or UDFAs can develop into good QBs if they are given time.
Even if Morris only developed into a good backup, that would be helpful. We’ll get some idea of what the Eagles think of him when they start making offseason moves. Maybe he’s “just a guy”. Or maybe Morris has enough potential that the Eagles will give him a chance to battle for the #3 or even #2 QB spot.

Interesting that the Eagles can still win the NFC East even if they lose to the Cards and Giants as long as the Giants lose to the Panthers and Vikings and the Redskins lose to the Bills and the Eagles which really could totally happen.
I’d die laughing if the game vs. the Giants turned into a bye week.
The way I see it the NFC East hinges on three games. Bills/Redskins, Eagles/Redskins and Vikings/Giants. I believe the Bills beat the Redskins, the Eagles beat the Redskins and the Vikings beat the Giants. That would make week 17 a bye week for the Eagles.
That would be an epic FU to the Giants fan base.

I believe in that scenario we’d still have to beat the Giants in the last game. The Vikings/Giants game does not matter as much as the Panthers/Giants game.
We have to beat the Redskins — that is basically a must-win. But if we do that, we should win any tiebreaker over the Redskins so we’d have to lose both and Redskins would have to win both for them to get in — so if they lose to either Dallas/Bills (or we beat Arizona), then we’ll finish ahead of the Redskins.
As for the Giants, if they beat Carolina they will have the tiebreaker advantage (as we would be tied in common opponents and then lose on conference record), if they lose to Carolina the Eagles have the tiebreaker advantage (common opponents). The Vikings are a non-common opponent for the Giants, much like Arizona is for us, so it should be the loss which hurts least.
There are a few ways the Eagles can make the last game a bye week — most of them by beating both Arizona and the Redskins — but if we lose to Arizona then beat the Redskins, and the Redskins lose to the Bills and the Giants lose to both Carolina and Minnesota, then we do win after week 16.
We’d miss you, but it would be worth it.

Capitalizing on those bottom of the practice squad dude is going to be a must considering the overall lack of drafted talent have playing at a high level right now.
I’m really hopeful that Bunche and/or Boyko really push to make the roster next year.
Hope they draft trevone boykin from TCU, regardless if they resign bradford. Could be the next russell wilson. Also could help us get rid of sanchez. i hate sanchez.

That matches exactly what I read, but I’m not a scout. There are a ton of guys on here who know more about scouting than I do, but I do a fair amount of reading about prospects. Those sources universally agree with you, but Charlie seemed to have a very strong opinion otherwise.

Thank you for posting the link. At first glace I see a guy who is far too often not throwing with his feet set and off of the wrong foot when he is throwing. I’m not a far of those traits as a passer.

I think he is improving. Yards, accuracy, tds have gone up while sacks have fallen. I think hes worth a developmental pick. I think many qbs have thr chance to plsy well with time and right circumstances. Hes got the tools just needs time.
also boykins ability to throw from different arm platforms is one of the things i really like about him, very aaron rodgers like in that regard.

Ehh I am not entirely sold on Boykin. I can rattle off at least 10-13 QBs I would rather have then him. He’s had a good year and did improve drastically from the previous year but his size, remember Chip’s specific measurables, and doesn’t possess elite arm strength. If you’re speaking developmental wise I would still rather have Coker from Bama, Dak Prescott, Travis Wilson, and even Taysom Hill.

Chip has specific measurables for every position and really tries to stick by those. Also if you watch a good amount of college football you would clearly see what I am talking about. I guess I am “crazy” for paying a good amount of attention to college and can clearly see that Boykin wouldn’t be on the Eagles radar as long as Chip is here and that he in no way possesses NFL arm strength.

If I wanted to I can post highlight reel youtube clips for 10 other QBs that are better NFL prospects then Boykin but what is the point when highlights don’t show everything about a player. You can have your opinion and think Boykin is the next Wilson all you want and I will stick to mine that he’s more of the next Devin Gardner then Russel Wilson.

Touche. I like Boykin I really do, but strictly as a college player. I am one to admit when I make a mistake on a player and if he turns out good then I will admit to being totally wrong. Kid can absolutely ball but in my general opinion he reminds of Gardner from Michigan, although Boykin is a better passer at the same stages of their respected careers. We’ll see how everything transpires.
I got a great feeling about him, and my gut has been pretty good in the past.
But to be clear, i dont want him to come in and start, i think he is the perfect developmental guy for chip.

Yea I will definitely give him credit for that. My only gripe about that is his elongated throwing motion which in the NFL could lead to taking too long to get rid of the ball, if he can work on those mechanics while still being able to throw on the run and from different positions then he may have a shot.
idk, i dont think its elongated at all, and he does get the ball out quick. But ill keep that in mind as i watch more of him.
His issue is his feet get jittery when sensing pressure around his knees. aka the money makers as they say in the RSP filmroom video.

I think Taylor is under contract with Buffalo next year anyway, so I’m seeing that as a quasi moot point.
I knew he had voidable years in his contract, but looks like not till 2017.
Yeah, he’s really played well this year, but I’d be willing to bet his QB rating comes back to earth next year.

Honestly I don’t think there is a correlation beyond a certain point. if it’s extremely low (10 or less) then you are going to see a player who makes dumb decisions consistently.

Arizona is one of the elite teams. No doubt about it. But they aren’t this juggernaut that we have no chance of beating like the National media is portraying. Arizona has one of the best rosters and they are solid to very good across the board, but some of their stats are misleading for example, run defense holding teams under 90yards a game. It’s a legit run defense, But part of those stats comes from a potent offense that has scored a ton of points and forced a lot of opponents to play from behind and abandon the run trying to make a comeback… it’s a legit run defense, but we have been running the ball well recently, and I like how we match up with some of the things that defense likes To do, For example, we will probably see their Bear Front, NT lined up on the Ceter, the DEs lined up over the Guards leaving our tackles uncovered. This means we probably won’t have much success running up the middle, so when we see Chip run Sproles, mathews and Demarco to the outside all game, I don’t want to hear people crying about not running murray up the middle which is his strength. Chip understands that, but we will have to gash them running outside before we can get them out of that Bear Front and have some success up the middle… I do like that, the bear front leaves our tackles uncovered and I feel like leaving jason Peters and great blocking TE like Celek uncovered should give us some good opportunities to seal the edge of the defense, allow our Guard to pull outside and create a lane for Sproles or mathews to explode thru when they turn the corner on the defense… I like our chances of Peters making you pay if you leave him uncovered.. obviously throwing to RB and TE will be a big part of our gameplan… Like The Carolina game, we can’t beat THS caliber of opponent if we don’t catch the well placed balls that SAM sends their way and if we don’t play a clean mistake free game like we did against the Bills allowing them to make all the penalties while we remained Discaplined… WR’s can’t drop Balls, and we can’t commit penalties and expect to win this game…

the Cardinals have been beat, they have been in close games that came down to the Wire, and they are basically 3-1 against top competition, only Losimg to steelers who held the arizona offense to only 13 points, and Id definitely take our defense over the steelers defense.. And they only had 1 letdown losing to a,Rams team that they should beat, but division games are crazy..

What I take from their schedule so far is that if we don’t show up to play, the Cardinals will wipe the floor with us. We can’t have a sloppy game and win this week.
This is a winnable football game for the eagle team we saw the past two weeks, but it will probably take our most complete game of the season to win this week…

Cox is playing at an elite level these days, and when he starts to dominate,it opens things up for Hurry, Barwin and BG to start Hunting,.. Out of all the lineman in this matchip, Cox is the best… Caleus Cambell is a stud, but he is no Fletcher Cox at this stage in his career… Actually, the Undiscaplined Bills team had a much tougher front 7 than the Cardinals, and we managed to handle elite players like Marce Dareus, jerry Hughes. Mario… You act like Caleus is the best DL we faced all year… JP and Lane stonewalled some quality pass rushers last week. We go into this game with JP and Lane playing their best ball of the year. They shutdown the Talentef Bills pass rush, and the week before you DIDNT even hear Chandler Jones. Ninkovich or Jabaal Sheards name because Of how well our tackles played.

Carson Palmer holds the ball longer than BRady looking to attack down field, if Clox and the boys beat up on Palmer without blitzing, this becomes a very winnable game… You can shut down any QB if you can hit him enough
i do think eagles have a good 3-phase game. all 3 phases need to get better, but i think that’s what will put us over the top in the end.

Cardinals are the better team.No question about it… But we do have an Equalizer, his name is Fletcher Cox who is hands down the best player in this matchup out of all the players that play in the trenches. Neither team has an Offensve or defensive Lineman better than Foetcher Cox..

And with the way Cox has played the past two weeks, Id like to think he wiill be jacked up to play Sunday night primetime against an elite Team..

Two weeks ago, Cox and our front 7 played against the pocket passer, BRady who has been getting the ball out faster then any QB in football, yet Fletcher TERRORIZED BRady all game long. And once Fletcher starts to dominating it opens up everything for curry, BG and Barwin to start making plays and our front 7 can play at a disruptive level like it has against Eli the last two games we played him, Romo on Thanksgiving last year, BRady and the Pats, Brees and the Saints… This DL is capable of being disruptive. big game by the pass rush against a pocket QB who gets the ball out so quick.

The next week, from Pocket passer, we had to make the switch to rushiñg against a Mobile QB in Tyrod Taylor who had a pretty damn good game until the end where Cox amd the DL started to completely dominate. That Bills DL was shocked because they had Been Mauling teams with their run game, came in here feelimg tôugh, talking about how Incognito was a top Rated Guard, and Cox and the DL just dominated them and Took the game over and stopped allowing Tyrod to use his legs to beat us

After dealing with a mobile QB last week, we get back to rushiñg against a statue of a pocket passer in Old Man Palmer coming off a injured Knee, and unlike BRady who wants to get the ball out so quick, Palmer and the Cardinals are very aggressive leading the league in taking shots down field which means that this immobile QB will hold on to the ball a little longer looking to go down field, which will Give Cox, Curry, BG, and Barwin an extra second to get their hands on Palmer and Batter him. If Cox and the DL dominates, like Eli Manning, Carson will rush his throws in the face of a pass rush and throw up some questionable balls, Just like we Forced BRady into throwing dumb INTs, and again last week Curry’s pass rush forced Tyrod into rushiñg and throwing up a stupid pass that reynolds was able to make a play on..

If we don’t pressure Carson, he will destroy us
if we have to blitz him all day, he will probably shred us..

But If Cox and the boys can get constant pressure and beat Carson up all game without having to blitz, things get interesting for us..

cox has shown just how valuable and great he is the past two weeks, we will Need Cox to dominate again, if we are going to have a shot at beating this quality cardinals team..

I agree with your statement on Cox, but a player you cannot overlook is Calais Campbell. He is on par with the level of player Cox is and he can wreak havoc on his own, especially with the level of play the Eagles have gotten out of their interior o-lineman this year. Let’s hope Cox keeps up his current level of play because far too many times when he strings together consecutive great performances they have been followed by let downs where he is totally invisible. You can’t convince me that the Cardinals Fromt 7 outclasses that of the Patriots and Bills…. The Cardnals have a good front 7, but the strength of that defense is in the secondary. Only thing about Campbell is that Arizona tends to line him up a lot over interior o-lineman and that is a scary thought to me with the kind of play the interior have given the Eagles this year. Cox should be able to dominate but like I was saying far too often their seem to be lapses in his play. Like I said I hope we see a complete game from Cox because he is going to need it being lined up over Iupati more often then not. I fully believe that Arizona is beatable and hoping the Eagles pull the upset but like you said they are going to need a full game out of all 3 phases of the team and this year that has been a tall order for this Eagles team.

Of course, Kempski did use Bradford’s full-season statistics. Going by the last few games, Bradford would be much higher in all those lists. If Bradford can keep this level up the rest of the season (or, preferably, improve) then I think Bradford would be fairly attractive on the market.

Totally off topic, but what do you guys think about getting Bruce Irvin in green if Seattle lets him go? Might be the kind of athletic pass rush specialist from the OLB position that could really help the third down defense (and hopefully not cost an arm and a leg). If it was him or Curry even money who would you rather pay for?
i brought this up about 2 months ago….i like him as a player but idk how he would fit here, not sure he is an everydown OLB…..maybe just a pass rush specialist to come in on 3rd down and i don’t believe he would be worth the money for just that role. He’s also a PED offender and is subject to random drug tests, and he doesn’t come across to me as a guy who understands there is consequences for wrong actions = not a “culture” fit, so i doubt chip would even have an interest.

Pretty ridiculous that the Eagles are healthy at WR and S and yet they are looking at practice squad guys. It isn’t only to dress them either but have them possibly get meaningful playing time.

These moves are likely more about having them during the offseason and into next year. I think we did this with Couplin last year (though we signed him off the Lions practice squad to the 53-man, and kept him inactive — one way to use those inactive slots, prepare for next year).

Romo plays tonight and the Boys win going away. His injury far and away has changed the fates of every team in the NFC East this season. Gave playoff life to 3 teams that have no real business in the playoffs and sunk his own team’s chances in the process.
Current state of QB play in the NFC East goes a long way to explaining why this division is such a shitty division. Manning has had quietly had another very good season but he is 35 in Jan.
If the Giants had a respectable defense, they would have easily ran away with the division.
Even if they had less injuries, it was a weak group on paper going into the year.
But it has been since like 2013? The NFC East hasn’t been that tough division for years now so why is that a surprise now?

If football was ALL about Measurements, ODB should roast Josh Norman today since he is much faster, and jumps higher, but there is more to football than that… Norman really competes, plays with extreme confidemce and is very technical… When Josh Norman faces top WR’s like Julio Jones, he is always at a big disadvantage in terms of measurements, yet the kid steps up and has shutdown top WRs more than any CB in football this yeàr. I have seen both Richard Sherman and Revis get roasted at times this year, while Norman has leap fogged them all and has become the top shutdown corner today

If you have a defensive Head coach, I have a hard time giving too much credit to the defensive coordinator. Obviously a coordinator deservesmsome credit, but I view,Carolina as the Ron Rivera defense, not the mcDermott defense… Just like the,Eagles run the chip Kelly offense, not the Pat Shurmur Offemse
