Perspective on Chip, Eagles

Posted: December 30th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 501 Comments »

When a big event happens, a lot of bad information tends to be spread around. Let’s clear up a few things.

Chip Kelly is a good coach.

Chip Kelly is a good guy.

Jeff Lurie made a change because things were heading in the wrong direction, but let’s not act like the Eagles were some epic disaster. The Eagles terrible season has them sitting at 6-9. The Tennessee Titans have won 5 games in the last 2 years combined. The Jaguars are 5-10 and this is a breakout season for them. The Ravens were a Super Bowl pick by a few analysts and they’re currently 5-10.

The Eagles had a down year, but this was hardly a team that should be compared to the awful 1998 Eagles, a team that was historically bad.

Kelly leaves the Eagles with a 26-21 record. In the 3 years before his arrival, the Eagles were 22-26. More went right than wrong in his tenure.

As to relationships, Chip is not Hitler. The players do not hate him. Some liked him quite a bit. Unfortunately, Chip did not build strong relationships with the majority of the players. This doesn’t mean a bunch of guys sitting around being best buddies, but there has to be some kind of connection.

We hear a ton of praise for Bruce Arians. He is tough on his players, but he’s able to convince them that the tough coaching is best for them and the team. Arians has a bond with his players. They aren’t all best friends, but there is a good vibe with that team. There are healthy relationships. It shows in their performance.

Don’t try to turn this into a ridiculous soap opera.

Chip isn’t a villain. The players aren’t victims. This is simply a situation where things weren’t working and Lurie felt changes had to be made if the situation was going to be fixed. He went all-in with Chip this year and it didn’t work. Keeping Chip and trying to make a subtle change here and there wasn’t going to solve the situation. You either stuck with Chip and his ideas for another year or you made a change.

Lurie decided to go with the change.

This was a nice summation by Brandon Graham.

I need time to write out my thoughts on the news that Howie Roseman and Tom Donahoe will be running the personnel side of things. I’m keeping this piece short so I can move on to that topic.

I get what you’re saying, Tommy, but for a team without a franchise QB it would be better to be real bad than mediocre.

  2. 2 A Roy said at 7:23 PM on December 30th, 2015:

In a season where there’s no clear cut #1 or #2 QB, it won’t matter much … assuming they lose to NY.

  3. 3 Greg Richards said at 7:26 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Real bad as in 2-14 for multiple seasons to maximize your chances of landing a franchise QB.

  4. 4 Media Mike said at 7:47 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I’m REALLY high on Goff. If he is there for our pick and we get him; I’ll be pumped.

  5. 5 TypicalDouche said at 7:49 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Depending on where the Eagles pick. If its top 5 then Goff would be a good pick but if not then would rather have Laremy Tunsil.

  6. 6 Media Mike said at 7:52 PM on December 30th, 2015:

The only chance we have of getting Goff at our pick will be if the workout / combine people nit pick him down the board and raise Lynch up it.

Tunsil, unless he goes on a crime spree, has no shot of being there when we pick.

  7. 7 TypicalDouche said at 7:54 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Well with the way Lynch stunk it up today its highly doubtful he leapfrogs Goff. As for Tunsil, I know that’s more wishful thinking then anything but regardless knowing Howie is working the draft then they may trade down 6 times before they make a pick.

  8. 8 Media Mike said at 8:00 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I’ve been down on Lynch since the Temple game.

And I don’t mind multiple trade downs if we get better value and more picks in the process.

  9. 9 holeplug said at 8:22 PM on December 30th, 2015:

heh I didn’t even think of that but with Howie back in charge of the draft its pretty much a lock he’s trading back to recoup that 2nd round pick

  10. 10 Media Mike said at 8:23 PM on December 30th, 2015:

If one of the guys we really want doesn’t fall to our pick; we need to trade down and trade down again rather than having our head coach compel an impulse of Marcus Smith.

  11. 11 xeynon said at 10:01 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Unless Goff or one of Stanley/Tunsil falls to our pick, I’d be fine with trading back and recouping the pick. This team has a lot of holes so there should be a top prospect available a bit later in the first round at a position of need.

We HAVE to lose on Sunday though. This game could mean a difference of 10 spots in the first round and we could use that extra ammunition.

  12. 12 Howie Littlefinger said at 5:11 AM on December 31st, 2015:

10 spots in EVERY round (not 2nd obv)

  13. 13 JoeBlow said at 7:50 PM on December 30th, 2015:

im intrigued by him…..one thing i think i know for sure about the QB’s in this draft, is that all of them need to start out with a clipboard and headphones on the sidelines

  14. 14 Media Mike said at 7:53 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Yup! And the guys I like “early” are Goff and Wentz.

    Mid – Maybe Kiel

    late(r) – Hack.

  15. 15 JoeBlow said at 7:54 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Goff and Wentz are the guys i like too, Especially if Chip was still the coach i really liked Wentz, but still think he is interesting no matter who the coach is

some discussion today about Hack returning to State College for his final year

  16. 16 Media Mike said at 7:59 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Hack going back will depend on the bowl game. If he lights it up, he should go pro. If he has a bad game, he should go back and hope the new OC and improved O-line help his draft stock.

  17. 17 Buge Halls said at 8:15 PM on December 30th, 2015:

After seeing Hack play most of this year, I don’t think he’s going to be a good NFL QB

  18. 18 Media Mike said at 8:17 PM on December 30th, 2015:

If you look at his freshman year work under O’Brien, you get a better look at his potential. PSU’s O-line and play calling under the current OC has been putrid. Hack is in no way, shape, or form ready to be an NFL QB in year one, but I think you can develop him with a year of clipboard duty as the 3rd stringer, a 2nd year as your backup, and have him start year 3.

But that’s a 4th or 5th round pick. I’m not taking him before that.

  19. 19 Buge Halls said at 10:09 AM on December 31st, 2015:

I think he’d be better served by staying at PSU for his last season and developing more. but the lure of the money is tough to fight.

  20. 20 holeplug said at 8:25 PM on December 30th, 2015:

He should prob go back regardless. Not remotely ready for NFL defenses and its not possible to be a worse offensive coordinator than John Donovan so PSU should be a lot better next year. Plus Franklin can recruit like crazy and some of those blue chippers should start to bear fruit.

  21. 21 BobSmith77 said at 7:21 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Tommy you had to make a Hitler comparison? Jumped the shark. Just change it to despot or autocrat.

Not sure if Kelly is a good guy either. Strikes me an insular guy who largely doesn’t care what other think of him professionally or personally. Doesn’t make him a ‘bad guy’ but he doesn’t strike me as someone who had a high emotional intelligence or many attributes of what I would use to define someone as good.

  22. 22 daveH said at 7:44 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Yes you can easily compare him to a ca tholic priest instead of 88, hh..

  25. 25 Knucklehead said at 12:04 AM on January 1st, 2016:

I can’t tell what you meant, but it sounds like you’re saying that instead of using Hitler as an example of evil, you’d prefer that Tommy use a Catholic priest. Which is bigoted and ignorant.

  26. 26 daveH said at 12:43 AM on January 1st, 2016:

I knew it was too dangerous to put that out ther. Im going to edit it.

  29. 29 Knucklehead said at 12:50 AM on January 2nd, 2016:

I’ll agree with you there. I hate to be the one speech policing someone, but it really annoys me how people have no problem saying awful things about Christians, but the moment anyone offers even the most mild criticism of Judaism or Islam, (or Jewish or Islamic individuals) the cries of hate speech immediately begin.

  30. 30 daveH said at 2:04 PM on January 2nd, 2016:

    Hear you on that !
And those are serious issues not really apropriate for Eagles chat room.

Should Lurie have given Chip a coming to jesus talk — how’d it get so far that when they talked he was fired? Was he basically fired after the Detroit game? it sort of looks like it if you look at his reaction after that game.

  37. 37 TypicalDouche said at 7:36 PM on December 30th, 2015:

  38. 38 Mitchell said at 7:37 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Thats the beauty of it. Fipp is undercover as a mild mannered special teams coach

  43. 43 Maggie said at 7:43 PM on December 30th, 2015:

He has such a smug face it’s very easy to dislike him intensely. Probably unfair but, I don’t care.

  44. 44 Mitchell said at 7:36 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Is it strange that I am not really that upset after the firing? He had a winning reccord the past 3 seasons combined yet the Eagles got worse as Kelly got more power. Maybe thats why.

  45. 45 Sean Stott said at 7:37 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I don’t think that’s why they got worse (power). I think they got worse because teams adapted to his scheme, and he refused to adapt his scheme to counter. How many games were there where defenses had the offense 100% dead to rights on almost every single play?

  46. 46 Maggie said at 7:47 PM on December 30th, 2015:

He already has his next gig lined up, that’s why. Maybe Lurie will bring in Fisher or Garrett or Bradley or Pettine or Daniels. You know, all losers. All NFL guys!

KISS and Win – The “Keep It Simple, Stupid” principle defined Pittsburgh’s blue-collar work ethic and Coach Noll’s play calling strategy.

“We like to pride ourselves on being a very fundamental football team. You have to win by blocking well and tackling well”

Chuck would say, “It’s not my job to hold your hand. It’s my job to take motivated people and show them how to become better.”

I imagine since we traded Foles AND a 2nd rounder Roseman has been in Luries ear yelling him Chip is in over his head and its a mercy to put him out of his misery

  112. 112 Bane said at 7:54 PM on December 30th, 2015:

This franchise has a zero chance of doing any sort of meaningful damage as long as there is Snake Roseman in several miles radius away from NovaCare and Linc. As we’ve seen it so many times in life, someone who is not good at all at doing his job, is excellent in creating intrigues and machinations. It’s not by any means that Chip was doing a perfect job, or was completely on point with his methods, but this incompetent owner, by not pulling a plug on both of these guys if he wanted so badly to get “from good to great”, has just sentenced this franchise to the very mediocrity he was so obsessed avoiding. The only good thing that can come out of it, is that the fan base finally lowers its expectations for real, and get rid of all those toxic ‘SB contenders’ illusions.

  113. 113 Media Mike said at 7:55 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Can’t say I agree. I think Roseman is a perfectly fine front office man. Maybe not the guy you want the buck to stop with but he flat out knows contracts, trade values, and valuation of talent by round in the draft.

  114. 114 Greg Richards said at 8:00 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I think a lot of our perception of Roseman is fueled by leaks to the media by old-school scouts who naturally hate a guy with a cap background. Certain media members serve up whatever those guys dish without question.

  115. 115 xeynon said at 8:58 PM on December 30th, 2015:

The thing is we heard this kind of stuff about Roseman before Chip had him exiled, and it didn’t stop him from doing his job. He made a lot of trades and signed a lot of free agents for a guy who was “widely hated around the league”.

  116. 116 Bane said at 8:33 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I’d like to thank both of guys who replied to my post in a polite and no-bashing-and-name-calling manner that became a norm nowadays. I see that in some other comments someone is implying that strong disliking of Roseman may be perceived as antisemitism, and though I really hate how political correctness made everyone timid and walking on eggshells, I’d still like to clarify that calling Roseman a Snake was just alluding to the history of intrigues that follow that guy. It’s pretty obvious it’s not just a media leak here or there, it’s a recurring theme. Beside that, I see no strong evidence of him being a good talent evaluator, hence him being just a good cap guy simply shouldn’t be something we should settle for. And much more important than anything regarding him, is the owner who allows Howie’s mouth constantly being on his ear, and overall very poor handling of entire power struggle, plus a lack of playoff success in recent years. Lurie should have cleaned the slate completely, and started it all from scratch. That would be taking the full responsibility for the franchise future in the eyes of the fan base, and the rest of the league.

I love the site, and respect your insight. I am unsure who this latest entry is directed at though. It seems the precious minority thought of Kelly as a “bad person.”

Most people that wanted him gone did not like his rigidity in terms of personnel and aversion to conflict despite being GM. Also some saw a lack of innovation offensively and regression in playcalling/scheming.

And there were others that wanted to keep him. I don’t see people demonizing him.

  118. 118 Media Mike said at 8:03 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I’d flame them over that, but I’m 100% guilty of having complained about the odd number of times Reid kept drafting and/or placing on the 53 man roster players who were Mormon and who I didn’t think were good enough.

I think the Jewish stuff about Roseman and Lurie is weak sauce, but I needed to make sure I was totally honest with y’all first.

  134. 134 Greg Richards said at 8:25 PM on December 30th, 2015:

The thing is that Reid really didn’t give Mormons preferential treatment. He might sign a few guys as UDFAs, but as far as drafting them? Scott Young, but he went right about where he should have gone in the draft. Yeah, most didn’t like Reno Mahe but as a combination RB/WR/PR he was probably deserving of a roster spot, at least inititially.

  135. 135 Media Mike said at 8:26 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I think there were a few other late round draft picks over the years, possibly a few Polynesian players, but I think you’re correct that Reno Mahe made things extremely intense from a hatred standpoint.

  136. 136 Greg Richards said at 8:39 PM on December 30th, 2015:

  140. 140 midnitemud said at 8:01 PM on December 30th, 2015:

What coaches from this staff would you keep (if it was your call)? A few I hope they keep are Fipp, Azz, and Duce. Fipp is obvious. Azz seems to be the perfect DLine coach for this group (production-wise and personality-wise). Duce seems to have a good rapport with his players, but production wasn’t there this year as in past (probably due to OLine issues though).

  141. 141 TypicalDouche said at 8:02 PM on December 30th, 2015:

I would keep Azz as well but according to D3 he is strictly a 3-4 d-line guy so if they switch defenses he is more then likely gone. I would definitely keep Stoutland, Staley, and Fipp.

  142. 142 midnitemud said at 8:07 PM on December 30th, 2015:

What about a 4-3 Under defense? Still keep Azz? Just think the players along the DLine truly respect and respond to Azz. Wouldn’t want to mess with a good thing (almost the only good thing about our D).

  143. 143 TypicalDouche said at 8:10 PM on December 30th, 2015:

He could coach in a 4-3 under, but again that all depends on the incoming coach. I am very adamant about keeping Azz and I’m hoping it happens.

    Same here.

  145. 145 D3FB said at 8:17 PM on December 30th, 2015:

No so much that he’s a 34 guy but that he’s a 2 gap coach. Marshall ran 2 gap when he was there Vinnys freshman year, then Oregon ran 2 gap while he was there, and obviously the Eagles.

  146. 146 midnitemud said at 8:26 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Speaking of Vinny. He was one of only 4 players Lurie mentioned in his PC today (along with Sproles, Demarco, and Bradford) as being “scheme diverse.” Very telling from my perspective. Don’t think they will let Vinny walk in FA (at least I hope). Too good of a young talent to let go just because of scheme fit.

  147. 147 D3FB said at 8:28 PM on December 30th, 2015:

  152. 152 Media Mike said at 8:40 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Ha ha ha ha; we’ll see what he likes or doesn’t once they’re getting blown out in their own building. Seattle slapping them around in the 2012 playoffs was a great day.

  155. 155 Sean Stott said at 8:43 PM on December 30th, 2015:

When you say that, do you mean that he is not able to play the 2-gap DE position (like Thornton does well), or that it’s just wasting his 1-gap abilities and hence not a good use of resources?

  156. 156 D3FB said at 8:49 PM on December 30th, 2015:

It’s that he can’t hold up for an extended stretch with the run game responsibilities of a 2 gap DE. He’s bulked up and is still only 285. For a position that is going to mean you are in alot more traffic and dealing with more double teams that you will be asked to hold the point. So its a combination of not playing to his strength and not being able to handle the position.

In a 34 2 gap you want guys like Ceddy and Brett Keisel

He profiles like a Justin Tuck in a 43 over

He profiles like a Michael Bennett in an Under front

  157. 157 Media Mike said at 8:50 PM on December 30th, 2015:

  165. 165 botto said at 8:09 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Don’t know of any RB coach getting promoted to HC.

Lurie will interview Duce as a courtesy, to get his name in the mix around the NFL. And to meet Rooney requirements — quickly.

  176. 176 D3FB said at 8:51 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Duce is going to need to pay his dues as an OC before he’s seriously considered for a HC gig. Big difference between managing 4 or 5 guys at what’s considered the easiest position to coach vs running the whole operation.

  177. 177 Greg Richards said at 8:55 PM on December 30th, 2015:

  185. 185 Media Mike said at 8:11 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Not to thread jack, but the more I think of it the more I’d like to have Hue Jackson as our head coach and Bradford back as QB.

I’d keep Shurmur as OC / Bradford’s handler while Hue calls the plays.

Somebody had mentioned Hue bringing over one of the Bengals DB coaches as his DC. If that happened it would be cool to see it be Mark Carrier; just due to his violent highlight reel. That dude straight up crushed people.

Assistant coach group aside, I think Hue learned a lot after he was fired as the Raiders HC, humbled himself taking lower jobs, and kept putting in the work on NFL staffs. I like that a lot. The Cincy O is WAY better under Jackson than it was under Gruden.

  186. 186 The original AG said at 8:16 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Yep. I like that option. I would like to keep Shurmur on staff, but I’d be open to Fangio if he’s in the running. I think we have some pieces to have a stellar defense. Add in a couple OL and we could be a grinding team come late in the year.

  187. 187 Media Mike said at 8:18 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Yep, think rule that teams can block assistants from interviewing for coordinator positions is bogus. Problem is teams would take advantage of it by giving one guy the coordinator title and have other asst HCs or senior assistants that have more authority.

  198. 198 Greg Richards said at 8:38 PM on December 30th, 2015:

In the Greek tragedies, hubris is a charcter flaw found in a man in an authoritative position who becomes so enamoured of his exceptional qualities that he forms a delusion that he greater than other mortals, equal to the gods. He is punished and his downfall is brought about by nemesis.

  253. 253 Patrick said at 9:01 PM on December 30th, 2015:

Personally I’d love to see Matt Patricia being in the mix. Its always dangerous to steal from the Pats, but with McDaniels being mentioned then I guess its open season. The Patriots defense has in a big way been remodeled since their last SB loss to the Giants and I think in a big way its not a retooling that Belichick himself is solely responsible for, apparently Patricia has a huge part in that and the current Pats defense is HIS defense.

Before Chip was fired, I really wanted to see Jim Schwartz as Billy Davis’ replacement. The guy ran such a great defense in Buffalo and IIRC a somewhat good defense in Detroit. Most impressively, he got major production out of Suh and Dareus, which makes me hopefull for Cox. He got great edge rush both places, especially out of a guy like Jerry Hughes who looked like a bust, which would be kinda nice with Graham and Curry who shown a lot of potential. However, Schwartz was such a terrible HC IMO, I really disliked him. The argument would be that most coaches learn tremendously from getting canned. I wouldn’t love him as a HC as much as I would adore him as DC,but its a name.

  256. 256 Patrick said at 9:08 PM on December 30th, 2015:

AFAIK, he limited the wide 9 tremendously when he was with the Bills and build a lot on the 43 under thoughts of Mike Pettine keeping Dareus at 3 tech with Kyle Williams as a NT. Im by no means an expert on Bills football, but he might have evolved in that regard.

Still, not my favorite HC. Actually, IMO one of the worst recent HC in the NFL.

I think Curry was an excellent pick and its too bad his talents are not fully utilized in the past defense. The quote from Birds 24/7 in which an anon offensive player said that “energy was down” leading up to the Washington game. That can’t be ignored. Why would energy be down!? There will always be players unhappy with a coach on a 53 man roster. Chip couldn’t get the best from these guys even when they had the division lead (Bucs) and playoffs (Washington) on the line.

If this is true, Lurie was right to move on. Good luck to Chip at his next stop. If he becomes the next Bellicheck story, it will be a hard pill to swallow, but it was the right decision for the Eagles.

However, the failure to address OL this offseason, the sighnings of Murray and Miles, and playing Murray so long when it was clear Mathews was superior just baffled me. The Bucs and Detroit games were the first major signs that bad shit was going on behind the scenes. And now we are where we are.

Dawkins made that point today in regards to Austin and said he didn’t understand how Kelly kept Austin after his efforts and comments after the game ending INT vs Bucs. Said other head coaches would have cut a veteran like that the next day. I said the exact same thing after that happened and was stunned that Austin’s nonchalant effort and comments were tolerated by Kelly.

On the other hand, Kelly got rid of a bunch of guys and Dawkins said it likely created strange set of expectations of what would and wouldn’t get a guy released, traded, or sat. Kelly almost did it backwards by not holding players accountable for in-game performance yet dumping then at will in the offseason.

It’s a moot point now, but Kelly might have become defensive and accommodated Johnson, but he may have learned something that he didn’t know, and either way, it is regrettable.

So to be critical of Roseman is to get labeled as antisemitic? Way overboard and undue.

I could care less he is Jewish. What would make me leary of dealing with his J.D. (lawyers are a necessary evil but there are few professions I hold with lower personal value and a sense of professional ethics than lawyers), that Lurie apparently holds him in such high regard yet refuses to state why except the 2012 and 2013 drafts, and pretty much had deferred any possible criticism of him.

I do think Roseman has value in negotiating contracts and several other areas. Just kind of scant evidence to go on that he has made good personnel decisions and somehow committed no real wrong in the numerous struggles this team has had in FA and the draft the past 5 years.

Did Howie Roseman think that the moves Chip was making were idiotic? Probably. I think most of us would agree with him, at least in hindsight. Frankly, I wouldn’t want him in power now if he didn’t.

But you want to make it seem like some kind of Machiavellian plot, with Roseman sneaking around, whispering in ears. He got paid good money by Lurie to stay. I’d guess he was expected to give his honest opinion. He probably didn’t need to sneak into Lurie’s office and leave Kempski articles on the desk.

So yeah, it’s not blatant, but some of your posts have that antisemitism feel to them.

Lurie flat out trusts the guy, and he doesn’t have to give you or anybody chapter and verse on why. If Howie is extremely loyal and competent enough to satisfy Lurie, all of the envy and scuttle about back-stabbing, and ass-kissing, largely unsubstantiated mind you, don’t amount to a hill of beans. If folks don’t think he’s a competent talent evaluator, something tells me he’s got the authorization to hire someone who is. I have commented on why I think the model Lurie is following is seriously flawed, but that isn’t of Roseman’s making, and to be still standing says something about his resourcefulness, I think.

Howie has shown himself to be an adequate talent evaluator, and an ace with contracts. We could do much worse.

I hated just about all of Chips moves this past off season, but in hindsight it wasn’t really all that bad. Went thin at O line, and I’m sure he didn’t want to, and ultimately that was his downfall. If the o line had been rock solid it is a different season.

We went from a football prodigy and possibly Ok GM to a contract prodigy and a possibly very good GM. He just has to find the right football people, or we are in for more misery.

Roseman will obviously give a level of intelligence back to the valuation process, but I still feel uneasy about how the whole power struggle went down and the leaks that came like Hart and Foles that clearly came from Rosemans camp. Is Howie really a team player and somebody that can build good relationships with whomever they might bring in? Eagles WR – I don’t know why, but you decided that you wanted to forget how to catch this year. It was terrible to watch.

Eagles OL – You forgot how to block many times this season, and some of those snaps were horrifying.

Billy D – It seemed like once people figured out your defense, you were lost and they exploited both the run and pass defense.

Lurie – For not firing everyone and starting over

Hinkie – For making me believe you had a real idea and that this team could win 30 games this year.

Holmgren – For doling out contracts like Billy King and hamstringing the Flyers for the next 3 years.

Phillies – For not getting rid of Rube two years ago, and having to rebuild.

Union – For being like every other team in Philly right now.

I think Hinkie either underrated how important he was in the second half last year or thought it was possible that Ish would help the team win too many games. I know for sure he underrated the impact losing would have on young kids. A decent PG like Ish has had a great impact on Noel (20 pts, 9 reb. tonight). I like Okafor and think he can develop into a special player, offensively at least, but the kid needs time to develop and having PG’s throw him the ball with 5 seconds on the shot clock wasn’t helping him at all…..things are at least entertaining again in sixerland

then he could have claimed him off waivers, but never did. That was a mistake. They had to give up the 2 2nd rounders to get him back, but i’m totally ok with that. This team was in a bad way and our young bigs were suffering the most without a PG to feed them. Plus idk if we would have room for those two second rounders next year anyway with a healthy Embiid and Saric probably coming over…let alone at least 3 1st rounders in the draft, possibly 4. To me getting a PG this season was much more important in the short term because the bigs were not being developed as much as they could have been

It’s pretty well known trait of organizations that when an executive with decision-making power is let go, organizations tend to overreact in the opposite direction with the next hire. Here is Lurie from today when asked what he was looking for in the next coach:

“Number one: a smart, strategic thinker. That’s a given. You’ve got to be looking out for the short-term, mid-term and long-term interests of the franchise,” Lurie said. “Looking for somebody who interacts very well and communicates clearly with everybody he works with and comes in touch with. Understands the passion of our fans and what it’s like to coach the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s a unique and incredibly passionate fanbase that just wants to win. You’ve got to incorporate that in your life, in your heart and you’ve got to be willing to do that. And another thing is attention to detail. I think all good coaches have tremendous attention to detail in this league.

“And lastly — amongst many other things, but I’ll just mention a few — you’ve got to open your heart to players and everybody you want to achieve peak performance. I would call it a style of leadership that values information, all the resources that are provided and at the same time values emotional intelligence.”

    Read more at http://www.phillymag.com/birds247/2015/12/30/jeffrey-lurie-chip-kelly-philadelphia-eagles/#T554VyuGiRP0iw8B.99

Let’s read between the lines, and I think we can see why Lurie fired Chip:

    1. Chip wasn’t good enough at balancing short, medium, and long-term interests. I think Lurie’s thinking of releasing Jackson for nothing, Mathis, maybe Shady trade. Chip wanted certain things done NOW when waiting might have benefited the team in the long run more.

    2. Communication was a problem, especially (as has been pointed out elsewhere) with Roseman and other front-office guys. Need to be able to work collaboratively if you’re not Belichick.

    3. I think the fanbase comment is a knock at how Chip communicated through the media and alienated reporters, who indirectly represent the fans.

    4. Attention to detail comment is indicating Chip was spread to thin to pay attention to important things.

    5. Clearly Chip was too distant from the players (at least enough of them to affect performance of the team) to effectively motivate them.

These are all fixable things for Chip, and he might be great at his next stop (although I think he can’t win with the offensive pace he plays in the NFL, either…).

I don’t think most fans care about the media reporters. I did notice that the official website was a lot less active under Kelly compared to Reid. They let them videotape practice less and there were less interviews. I’m pretty sure Spadaro will be one of the most happy guys that Chip is gone.

When a team is getting 2 – 3 games worth of extra pounding, hits and blocks against them from other NFL teams, someone should be listening to the players. Whether people were afraid to talk to Chip or not, this one thing should have been a given amongst the coaching staff and someone should have been able to approach Chip and state this very thing. For that matter, Chip being so bright should have known it. This was the one thing I could not understand with Chip. Why up tempo when things were not conducive for it. It was a thing of beauty when it worked but too often the offense just could not sustain anything to even want to try tempo. Shame he couldn’t or wouldn’t adjust because as stated earlier, when clicking, I liked watching this offense almost as much as Buddy’s defenses .

  413. 413 Eagles News: Philadelphia should hire an offensive minded coach - said at 6:09 AM on December 31st, 2015:

[…] Perspective on Chip, Eagles – Iggles BlitzWhen a big event happens, a lot of bad information tends to be spread around. […]

Depressing.. Finally Lurie grew balls corrected a wrong no one expected LURIE to do because it was out of Chaechter for LURIE, so Eagles fans celebrate acknowledging a mistake and trying to fix it. LURIE gave me hope for 24 hours, then he ruined EVERYTHING the next day with his refusal to hire a GM, and is sneaking Howie Roseman as the GM without giving him the title of GM, and now I believe we are doomed!! LURIE, Howie, Smolenski running a coaching search AGAIN after hiring chip 3 years ago. I’m tired of this shit, how about you add one singke FOOTBALL GUY to help hire a friggin Football COACH?
    .
This was Lurie’s chance to do better, put an end to the dysfunctional front office that has only failed since Banner left. Instead of finally bringing in a respected GM who coaches want to work for, we get Howie whs backstabbing reputation is trash amongst NFL circles, and this means there will be candidates we can’t get bcause of Howie reputaion
    ..
I’ll tell you right now that we can’t get the coach I want, DC Patrica from the Patrits, Bellichck will recommend that he doesn’t sigń on to work with Howie..

Sounds like you’ve got a better plan than Lurie.

  423. 423 Media Mike said at 9:39 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Indeed! The plan centers around using solar powered pumps to pull sea water to great heights and use the power of gravity to have that water spin a system that is a combination of turbines and the filters on would find in a life straw to provide dry areas of the world with a steady supply of water for agriculture and industry that doesn’t pull surface water from dams and/or vital ground water from wells.

Once that works, plan #2 is to develop a battery pack system to replace gas / gas stations with an automated system where one pulls in, has an automated system remove the battery pack and replace it with a fresh battery that is able to run about 350 miles on a charge. The old batteries are racked into a solar recharging station and people just would keep swapping them in and out of cars in the same way one would do a propane tank for a grill.

Far fetched I know, but I need to turn those millions into billions somehow.

  429. 429 Gian GEAGLE said at 8:39 AM on December 31st, 2015:

I really do understand this point of view, but I’m relieved… I like chip, I think he could be a great coach, but had he returned I would have been praying all summer for him to EVOLVE, and im glad to not have to worry about an egomaniac evolving and growing into the pro coach I hoped he would be..
    ..
I’m sorry, but I can NEVER justify basically Linning up in the same 3 shotgun formations every single week… I don’t care what offebse you run, it NEEDS Variety
    ..
Opposing coaches are too Damn smart to line up in the same formation every week…. It’s like having an entire arsenal of all the weapons you can imagine, yet you only ever use the handgun… Some situations call for a Machine gun, other situations call for a Bazooka… Why limit ourselves to a hand gun every week?
    ..
LURIE always talking about Bellichick and how much he wants to finds is own Bellichick, but chip is the complete opposite of Bellichick.. Bellichick morphs his entire offense every week so it looks different than the week before, his playbook must be tge size of an encyclopedia collection… Bellichick uses any formations, any play that can help the Patriots.. So many great plays, formations, football principles, and Chio ignores them all for his pamphlet sized playbook.
    ..
I’m happy I no longer have a coach who’s offense puts an insane amount of pressure on my beloved Defebse
    ..
I’m happy to no longer have a coach who disrespects time of possession, and glad I never have to hear a coach act like how many plays you run is the key to success, the Quality of the plays you run, is how you succeed.
    ..
Chip wanted to reinvent the NFL practice schedule, yet his record is horrible in short weeks…
    ..
Happy that we no longer have a coach that cares about moving so fast that he ignores allowing his QB to audible
    ..
Happy to no longer have a coach obsessed with moving so fast that he doesn’t correct mistakes on the field during practice… How can you build muscle memory if you don’t makee corrections on the practice field? Can’t build muscle memory fixing mistakes in a class room
    ..
I like chip, think he could be a Great coach. But that can only happen if he evolves and grows as a pro coach, and I worry he would NEVER evolve if we continued with him… Humbling his ego by firing him, might force him to take a serious look into making these changesm and if he doesn’t want to change, he is better off in college
    ..
i will shed a tear of joy when I see our QB line up under center

What a weasel, you aren’t hiring a GM, because our GMS Howies reputation is trash and LURIE knew he would get killed for hiring HOWIE as GM… So now he is just going to continuosly lie to us and pretend HOWIE ismt the GM?
    ..
Collaborating on decisions? What a JOKE! There is ALWAYS collaboration on Every decision. Chip had plenty people advising him and “collaborating” with him on decisions, but in the end, only 1 person has the final say, and HOWIE has more personnel power than anyone in this organization… The NFL is going to see right thru this bullshit and there will be candidates that refuse to work with HOWIE,l
    .
ARENT we tired over the over ambitious back stabhing in our front office.?
    ..
Even if you get a good coach to work with HOWIE, as soon as coach has success he will pull a power move and demand that HOWIE leave or he leaves.
    ..
LURIE went out of Charechter stepping up and getting rid of chip, 24 hours he ruined EVERYTHING recycling the same stooges who got us to this point, instead of finally having the Brain to hire a real NFL GM, who knows how to build a roster and has a good reputation around the NFL ..
    ..
The ONLY football guy we have is Tom Dinahue who hasn’t been part of a successful organization since the steelers in the 90s.. He was Terribke at Buffalo, and since coming here in 2012, we haven’t won anything
    ..
What the fuck has to happen to finally clean house in the front office? If LURIE was going to hire a retread, I would much prefer bringing Banner back..

    ..
What’s interesting is with chip out of the way, wonder how much work Howie does fixing our Cap after how much chip overpaid for guys who haven’t panned out

You can make light of Howie’s reputaion, but it will limit the coaches we can attract. No Sean Peyton, No one from the Patriots, I can’t remember who, but Bellichick advised someone to not take the Eagles job when Howie was in charge so we can’t get Matt Patricia, probabky can’t get Josh McDaniels(but I don’t want him anyway)

  467. 467 Gian GEAGLE said at 9:03 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Some say Bosa belongs in the 6-10’range, not top 5…

  468. 468 Media Mike said at 9:04 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Bosa might also belong in jail. He was rocking too much thug life stuff this past offseason.

  469. 469 A Roy said at 9:04 AM on December 31st, 2015:

IF we lose, probably around 9 or 10. If we win, somewhere 16-18.

  470. 470 Media Mike said at 9:05 AM on December 31st, 2015:

The range is 8 to 17.

    I demand 8!

  471. 471 b3nz0z said at 9:08 AM on December 31st, 2015:

    trade down?

  472. 472 Media Mike said at 9:09 AM on December 31st, 2015:

    All day every day!

  473. 473 b3nz0z said at 9:09 AM on December 31st, 2015:

    shopping spree

  474. 474 Media Mike said at 9:11 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Or brains spree! As in trading down again from 26 instead of having your head coach say “I want Marcus now.”

  475. 475 b3nz0z said at 9:37 AM on December 31st, 2015:

or your “a fat canadian fireman who’s already 28 is just the kind of pick that’s crazy enough to work!”

  476. 476 Media Mike said at 9:41 AM on December 31st, 2015:

In fairness to Reid, that guy was described as a “con artist” by teammates. He gave his all at the senior bowl, combine, and interviews; they tanked it once he got paid.

  477. 477 b3nz0z said at 9:50 AM on December 31st, 2015:

yeah but on the other hand, he was a fat 28 year old canadian fireman. and there were literally hundreds of football players who werent. reid wouldn’t have gotten screwed over if he hadn’t tried to outsmart the league. plus it was a guard in the first.

  478. 478 Media Mike said at 9:54 AM on December 31st, 2015:

I hear you but given the play of Barbre Doll and Turnstile Tobin; a first round guard sounds really good right about now.

  479. 479 b3nz0z said at 10:03 AM on December 31st, 2015:

as long as he or she is american, not 28, and hates fighting fires

more like donald sutherland in animal house, frankly

  482. 482 A Roy said at 10:04 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Funny how the blown pick happens when you do ‘need’ instead of BPA. Case in point…Marcus baby.

  483. 483 A Roy said at 9:10 AM on December 31st, 2015:

That IS one of Howie’s strengths…playing the draft position/trade game.

  484. 484 Media Mike said at 9:11 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Howie has a great handle on player valuation. I love that quality of anybody on draft day.

  485. 485 Bob Brewer said at 9:17 AM on December 31st, 2015:

We get pick value and then screw up the picks. What good is being good at trading draft picks if you can’t draft worth a darn?

  486. 486 Media Mike said at 9:18 AM on December 31st, 2015:

That would fall on the guy who made the final call on who to pick after those trade downs; which hasn’t been Howie since 2012.

  487. 487 b3nz0z said at 9:36 AM on December 31st, 2015:

i’d rather blow two 2nds than one 1st? haha idk

  488. 488 Gian GEAGLE said at 9:19 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Might have to, to try and recoup a 2nd round pick

  489. 489 A Roy said at 9:08 AM on December 31st, 2015:

You have no idea how much it hurt me to root for the Cowboys last week…but of course they failed to deliver At least all games are inter-division this week. I’ll be rooting for a lot of teams to win their 7th (or 6th) game so we drop. If I were Lurie, I’d ask Shurmur to make sure the next coach has good game film on the reserves.

  490. 490 Media Mike said at 9:10 AM on December 31st, 2015:

My hope is Marcus Smith trolls the entire free world on his way out the door by putting a kill shot on Eli that leaves him injured so long into next year that Eli loses his game played streak………………which his offensively longer than the steak of Jaws.

  491. 491 Gian GEAGLE said at 9:25 AM on December 31st, 2015:

Lol apparently you missed Marcus recent quotes when he said there is no seperation between him and Barwin and BG.. Basically he claims he is on their level…
    ..
What if Marcus steps on the field and looks like a monster, that would make chip look terrible
    ..
But hey, msome playërs like Bennie Logan and Curry will swear that Marcus will be a good player, sure hope they know what they are talking about

  492. 492 A Roy said at 9:30 AM on December 31st, 2015:

    Let’s start him and see…

  493. 493 EagleNebula said at 12:55 PM on December 31st, 2015:

Maybe we should start Cooper at DB, bet he would be great at Jamming OBJ with his extensive blocking skills!!!!

  494. 494 scratcherk said at 9:30 AM on December 31st, 2015:

not a big difference but i think the range is 9-18. jimmy said 8-17 but i think he was wrong. He said in his latest article that the highest we can pick is 9.

  495. 495 Media Mike said at 9:32 AM on December 31st, 2015:

    I want 9!

Fire CK — media — There’s a market for him…plenty of landing places with young QB’s
    ….
We don’t need Bradford — media — quite a few teams will be interested in him …
    ….
Media (nfl network this am) — who would want to coach the Eagles?

More media — the timing of the firing is to allow CK to find his landing spot. AND, give the Eagles more time to search. Um — season isn’t over. Unless there’s some ties to colleges — CK can’t talk to other teams. The timing of the firing isn’t for jobs — the timing of the firing was making a point….

  500. 500 AsianEagle said at 11:34 AM on December 31st, 2015:

I think the result of the Giants game will b very telling with respect to the timing of his firing.

  501. 501 scratcherk said at 10:52 AM on December 31st, 2015:

It will be telling who we hire for HC. If it’s low on our wish list, its because no one wants to come here and deal with the front office/howie. If you wanted to start fresh Lurie, then you really need to start fresh and get rid of howie.

Lurie has been the posterboy for half-assing this offseason. Hire chip then fire him after one bad season and not give him a chance to fix his mistakes. Fire the front office but leave Howie in charge. The man needs to commit and stop flip-flopping
