Wentz Gets a Blocker
Posted: April 29th, 2016 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 135 Comments »The Eagles finally added an OL in the draft, taking Isaac Seumalo from Oregon State.
Solid pick.
He’s got good size at 6-4, 303. He did very well in the agility tests at the Combine posting a 4.52 SS time and 7.40 3-cone time. Seumalo has a lot of experience. He started as a true Freshman and finished with 37 career starts.
Seumalo has the versatility the Eagles like. From his OSU bio:
23 starts at center, nine at right guard, three at left tackle and two at right tackle
That is incredibly versatility. He can come in and challenge for the LG spot right away, but also offers depth at C if that’s needed. I doubt you look at him at OT unless things are dire in the middle of a game.
This isn’t a sexy pick. Seumalo didn’t play for a great team. He didn’t dominate in an all-star game. He didn’t light up the Combine. He’s just a good, solid football player. He is a good student. His father is an assistant football coach at UNLV. Seumalo is the kind of high character player the Eagles still prefer to bring into the building. He should have the maturity to handle the transition to the NFL well.
With Seumalo, Brandon Brooks and Stefen Wisniewski, the Eagles have upgraded the interior of their OL.
I love the way he finishes blocks. Tough guy with a nasty streak.
_
First OL draft pick since…
Lane
That’s insane
…before the implementation of the forward pass…
Is he also a firefighter?
No but the name sounds like it might be Canadian
I know “malo” means “bad” in Spanish…
Amusingly, it means “settle” in Samoan.
Ha!
So far we’ve selected a Bison and a Beaver. It seems 2016 is the year of the pelt.
We are going to need a clarification before tomorrow’s pick: does any animal exploited during European expansion qualify – meaning Gators are still in play but the German unicorn is out – or strictly money making furs – meaning we better brush up on the Santa Barbara Minks roster.
Only Scott Van Pelt (or his cousin Alex) is qualified to answer that.
This is an excellent point. Thus far, the theme has been heterogeneous with respect to phylum given that we’ve selected an even-toed ungulate and an aquatic rodent. The common thread (or fiber as it were) could be “hide sought primarily for warmth” – which pre-dates European expansion as native peoples were actively hunting and trading both in the Pre-Columbian era. For fun, let’s try “creatures hunted primarily for subsistence purposes” and agree that Bulldogs qualify under such a rubric so that Howie has enough slack to trade up for Kenneth Dixon.
Wow, that is a lot of technical sciency stuff, but you are saying we are going to try to steal the guy the Redskins want to pick, right?
Fuller to Wash
So he’s never even played LG? Hopefully he can make the transition.
That’s his kryptonite.
He’s played RG and LT he’ll be fine.
Watching his highlights I agree with Tommy that I love the way he finishes blocks, but his footwork looks slow to me, and it seems like he’s a bit awkward. You can’t deny his success, though. PFF says this: “Seumalo rarely loses in the run game and mitigates the damage when he does. He surrendered only four pressures on 407 attempts in pass protection last year.”
And Skins take Kendall Fuller
More importantly, we stole a PAC-12 pick from Chip. He probably wanted him at #7.
They did bring him in for pre-draft visit.
Bye bye Braxton
I bash PFF all the time so I shouldn’t be the one posting this but here’s their grade on Seumalo pick:
16 (79) Philadelphia Eagles: Isaac Seumalo | Grade: A
Another good guard, Seumalo’s +30.9 overall grade ranks fourth in the
draft class among guards and his +24.3 run block grade ranks sixth.
Seumalo rarely loses cleanly in the run game and he only surrendered
four pressures in all of 2015, despite starting three games at left
tackle.
PFF’s college guys are much better than their pro staff.
Think they are making some really good coin as a scouting analytic service. Probably able to invest greater time and effort into something that you are selling to nearly all the top NFL teams at premium price.
Would that be considered ironic?
Wait, so the guy has played 4 of 5 Oline positions and we are slotting him in the ONE spot he hasn’t played?
Probably should just read a few posts down….
Not even listed in Tommys 11 OL possibilities below.
Versatility is nice. Guard that is a back up center almost gives you an extra ST player.
Or maybe that is how they make space for 3 QB
Miami traded up with MIN to grab WR Leonte Caroo.
Had to get in front of Cincinnati to grab a guy with character issues.
Is that Rod’s son?
No, it’s the bear in Jungle Book
Caroophi?
The Nick Vigil is over.
Offensive line? I’m pretty much fine with that, bring in talent and youth to the offensive line. I know next to nothing about Seumalo, but from what i read a decent pick.
Now time to add some raw talent to the defensive side on the ball with the late picks. Just bring some raw prospects with real physical talent.
Especially the DL.
I have no right to have an opinion on inside OL. I fail to see how you are meant to evaluate them without coaches film, but i have to say i loved some of the guys that went right after the Eagles… I liked Washington, Clark, Miller and Carroo. Seems a solid guy who will be an average starter or a very good 6th man on the OL… which is fine but in a really deep 3rd round i would hope for someone with more upside.
Having said that we have bossed the 3rd round recently and i was initially unimpressed with Hicks so he will probably come in and start 16 games at LG and look really good.
We are a cynical bunch here and I love it
at least his spider chart looks better than casey matthews’
In a bad way Casey has the ultimate spider chart
Nice pick. He’s an experienced, high-character player at a position of serious need and wasn’t a reach. No complaints.
Also adds depth to 2 positions. Would be nice if he were to start at G but i think he needs to improve upper body strength before that happens.
Would not surprise me if he were to play good on 2nd team in PS, and really shine on 3rd team.
NOOOOOOO
I hate Pittsburgh
Prosise to Seattle
boo. I wanted him.
Every year teams get studs and they don’t turn out. I guess i can’t be too mad, but it really does seam like the skins and cowboys may have better teams than we do at the moment – from a talent perspective.
well yeah, they have had more draft picks than us
The Cowboys do not on the defensive side by any means. On offense they have some very talented and young pieces. Talent wise they beat us on O. With that said Romo could easily get injured causing a complete melt down again. Even if he does somehow stay healthy i think you will see a pretty stark regression in him.
The Skins do appear have more talent then us on paper. Im confident unless Wentz comes out hot (he should and will sit), Agholor takes a large step forward, and Randle impresses they beat us on O. I would currently side with them on D by a hair, but i think its very possible that can flip easily early in the season.
They do unless Bradford gets good or Wentz can play.
NFL Network announcing picks during commercials – we’ve crossed the rubicon.

#Steelers selected DT Javon Hargrave, who was tremendous during East-West Shrine game practices.
🙁
Thought Steelers would be good fit for Billings. Did he shoot someone?
Guess teams don’t think he can play third down. Or he’s got a bad joint we don’t know about.
Not sure it’d help if he had a good joint either

Pats take a QB, his name is not connor cook.
I don’t love Cook but i am shocked he is going to fall to the 4th day. Crazy that his leadership question marks are causing him to fall 2 rounds at least. Some of his team mates must be throwing him under the bus.
What rounds are on the 4th day? 😉
(I assume you meant 4th round…)
yeah and edited ^^
Well, when your mom writes threatening letters to internet scouts, I’d say that’s indicative of something.
So Seumalo was the final result from the Bryce Brown trade, right?
No that was 77 went to Cleveland
Ah right, thanks.
Which Cleveland (via Carolina) turned into 93, 129, and 168. The trade will never die!
Wasn’t he taken with the 7th round pick we got for Asante Samuel? lol
lol Connor Cook
Cody Kessler over Connor Cook, Dak Prescott, and Cardale Jones.
Ok so i am now officially feeling far more confident in the Browns trading out of no.2 in the draft. They obviously are morons when it comes to evaluating QB talent.
must just not value it that much as an organization. Their backup is actually pretty good, just old and injury prone
Brissett to the Pats. Very interesting.
Selected in the 3rd round. So he’ll be twice as good as Brady.
Half as good.
I wanted hargrave. Oh well
Graham Glasgow.
Michigan center, or store brand Scotch?
A really good football player and better than the one we took at 79 🙁
Oof. Sounds like I need a tall glass of Graham Glasgow.
“MacTavish’s Whispers”: store brand Scotch or store brand peat-based cologne?
Perhaps both?
Simmons gone. Eagles had interest.
Lost in all this, is that GEAGLE ***GUARANTEED*** we’d take a DT in the 3rd.
WHERE ART THOU NOW GEAGLE!?!?!?!?!
HOW DARE YOU DOUBT HIS PERSCEPTAGE!
Kudos. I doubt “PERSCEPTAGE” has ever been typed in all-caps before. You are today’s Neil Armstrong!
GEAGLE anti-guarantees things. Soon as he types something in CAPS LOKZ it is a lock to not happen.
It’s called the “Maclin Treatment.”
Might be a little too soon for some of us 🙁
When he guaranteed us Cox isn’t going anywhere I started rocking in my chair and whispering affirmations to myself to prevent me from typing SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH.
Fuck geakle he is an idiot
Write a post seventy five times longer and use tons of fukcing…. And random caps fucks geakle
GEagle is like Sex Panther accept it is more like 30% of the time he is correct 100% of the time.
Hypothetical – could Brandon Brooks be candidate to move to RT down the road. Probably best fit inside but I remember when he came out in the draft many projected him to RT.
More likely- Doug has a weird thing for Dennis Kelly
He was extended last year when Chip was around too. It’s weird that 2 separate regimes like him. Granted, the extension was for very little money both years.
Damnit Stoutland.
Hypothesis: By having Kelly around everyone else feels good about their own personal appearance. Look good, feel good. Feel good play good?

One player I believe lost in mix due to previous injury, poor 2015 team is Isaac Seumalo. Very good football player, versatile, coach’s kid

As long as the doctors give the thumbs up, #OregonState’s Isaac Seumalo is a top-3 center in this class. And it’s a very good center group.
At G he finished #2 in pass protection efficiency in the nation per PFF. Unlike some i dont live and die by PFF, but it does say something.
Once he adds more upper body strength i think he will be very good at protecting the QB while being very effective on screen plays and outside runs. He will be average on inside runs.
Have to wonder if Kelce’s days are numbered. Pederson seems to like to mix in some power into his zone and that’s not Kelce. There’s no more guaranteed $ in his contract after this year. $2.4M dead $ hit after this season but would save $3.8M net in cap room.
If he continues to decline then most likely we’ll cut him. I don’t think Kelce will have any trade value if he continues playing like that.
I think Kelce is a player that will decline quickly. He has spent years as an undersized center which will eventually take its toll on him if it hasnt already.
Naturally as a player gets older they lose the speed and athleticism before strength. Kelces game is based on speed and athleticism not strength.
Especially if he continues to snap the ball over the QB’s head.
Wentz is an inch taller than Bradford. Problem solved!
No wonder Sammy is afraid of him.
well his competition (Wiz) has his own snap issues
oh snap
I have pondered the same thing recently. I do not think that Kelce is Pedersons ideal type of C. However, i think Seumalo will be tried at G first.
For now Wiz will probably be the one that gives Kelce the most competition.
Poop. High upside guys like Odhiambo and Simmons were taken earlier than expected.
Hope Howie isn’t done drafting OL yet. There’s still quality guys on the board.
I would really love to know what is making Billings drop so far.
Someone tweeted knee injury concern but then someone else tweeted that he doesn’t have a knee injury and that’s not why he’s dropping.
It couldn’t be as bad as Jack’s injury..right?
Someone found a walmart receipt where he bought a gas mask.
Let’s not be too quick to judge, however. THIS is the guy who found it…
I like the pick
Simple, yet definitve. Solid comment.
Hemingway-approved.
Never have i seen a greater, or more beautiful, or a calmer or more noble thing than this pick, brother.
And just for fun, the counterpoint – the saddest story in six words:
For sale: Seumalo jersey, never worn.
The last man on earth sat alone in a room. Seamalo knocked on the door.
Agree. Unexpected, but the more i look into the guy the more i like him. His issues such as upper body strength are very correctable. Furthermore his issues of sometimes failing to maintain a block are very much related to less then ideal but fixable lack of body strength.
Will bring a certain level of nastiness, is a high character and coach able guy. Is a pretty damn good technician which will shorten his learning curve.
Doesnt have a big ceiling, but i think he has a pretty high floor as well. Can very well be one of those players that will be under rated in the league for years with Pro Bowl level moments.
Of course G is a position of need as well.

Interior Offensive Line: Isaac Seumalo, Oregon State, 6-4, 303, 5.18
Seumalo
was a highly-regarded recruit who earned all-conference honors as both a
freshman and sophomore, despite rotating between center, guard and
tackle. Two foot surgeries, however, robbed Seumalo of the 2014 season
and with the Beavers struggling through a 2-10 season last year, he
apparently fell off the map for some. That is a mistake. Compact,
athletic, and powerful, Seumalo is a top-100 candidate if teams are
satisfied with his medical and a future starter on the interior.
Alright Greg & D3 – seems like there are a number of guys (Dixon, haeg, westerman, billings obviously and others) still available. What would it take to get into the mid fourth if someone we covet is there – would a 5th, 7th and 6th next year come close?
Just wait out the board at this point IMO. We made our one aggressive move for quality with Wentz. Need to go quantity rest of way.
Fair enough. Pick 5 and hope you get 2 serviceable guys is probably the sound way to play it
Have to agree. If anyone was considered a quality sure thing they would’ve been picked by now
mostly but if a steal emerges you have to consider it
We need to make sure we focus tomorrow to hit our quota of guys who are on the quarter system and can’t attend practice for 3 months or whatever
Discuss amongst yourselves: thoughts on available running backs. Who do you like, why, are they a good fit, who is realistically available in the 5th or with a possible trade up using 6ths and 7ths.
I was holding out hope for Dixon, but I guess that was not to be. I don’t see him lasting to the 5th at this point. Not sure about any of the other names.
I think tyler ervin has the ability to be a dynamic weapon for this offense. Doubt he lasts to our pick though
josh ferguson is nice, but hes a scat back type, not 3 down guy
that’s not a dealbreaker for day three
Let me get one of mike thomas/jakeem grant or colby listenbee
and lets get a RB (kenneth dixon)
