A lot of drama went away when Fletcher Cox reported to Philly to take part in the Eagles mandatory minicamp. Over the top questions and crazy hyperbole were ready to run rampant, but now we’ll have to live without them. Until the next crazy situation, which always seems to be around the corner with the Eagles.

Cox didn’t miss a lot. He will primarily be the 3-tech DT (or the Under Tackle) in the new scheme. His job is to attack up the field. Over and over and over. Sure, it would have been good for him to work with the new DL coach on some technique stuff and to shake off the rust, but Cox can get up to speed in a hurry.

I agree with Les Bowen that the Eagles actually benefited from Cox’s absence.

In the meantime, Cox’s absence has helped the Eagles get a better feel for their depth at defensive tackle, one of the positions most affected by the switch from 3-4 to 4-3. Beau Allen, drafted in 2014 as a gap-filling nose tackle, has pared his body-fat percentage in an attempt to be more viable in a 4-3.

Asked about spring standouts on Friday, Pederson spoke of “some defensive linemen in there that have really shown flashes of giving us depth at that position.”

Center Jason Kelce, asked Friday who has impressed him, said: “Mike Martin . . . has given tremendous effort, each and every day. I would be doing him a disservice if I didn’t point out how much he has stood out in these OTAs, the effort level he has brought.”

Martin, 6-1, 298, the Titans’ third-round pick in 2012, signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in free agency. He’d played nose tackle in a 3-4 in Tennessee and thought his quickness and aggressiveness might be more suited to a 4-3.

“To have an opportunity to play in a defense like this, that I feel fits my playing style very well, is a huge opportunity for me,” Martin said. “I just want to make sure I capitalize on it as best I can.”

The Eagles know Fletcher Cox and Bennie Logan are the starters at DT. They have Beau Allen as a backup. Taylor Hart is making the transition from 3-4 DE to DT, a position he hasn’t played in the NFL. Mike Martin is a veteran, but is new to the Eagles and to this scheme. UDFA rookies Destiny Vaeao, Connor Wujciak and Azziz Shittu all have a ton to learn.

Those players got extra reps with Cox skipping the OTAs and Allen missing time due to injury. OTA reps don’t tell you much about who can shed blocks, but they do mean something to players trying to learn a new scheme and who need lots of technique work. You don’t need contact to see how a player lines up, gets off the ball and looks on the move.

I’m still curious about Allen. He was a NT at Wisconsin as a Senior and has played that role in the NFL. He can 2-gap.

What I don’t know is if Allen can attack and be disruptive. The Eagles have kept him around this long. Maybe that’s because he’s hurt. Or maybe they value the thought of one DT being more of a run-stuffer type. I thought Allen would have been long gone by now, but he’s still here. We’ll see how he does in Training Camp.

Darren Sproles also showed up on Monday. His absence wasn’t an issue. Doug Pederson said on Friday that Sproles and Duce Staley are close and had been in regular contact.

Sproles’ absence meant extra reps for Kenjon Barner and rookie Wendell Smallwood. Both players took advantage, impressing the coaches and showing they deserved to be regular parts of the RB rotation. Sproles doesn’t know the Eagles offense, but he is a smart, veteran player and should be able to pick it up quickly. This is another case where the team benefited from extra reps going to the young guys.

*****

This kinda shocked me.

Go read Brandon Lee Gowton’s reaction to the PFF ranking.

BLG covered that well. No need for me to comment, beyond pointing out the fact that PFF comes up with some bizarre conclusions.

1)Allen can be useful, and Schwartz can experiment some stuff with him, if he doesn’t correspond well, he will be a fit somewhere.

2)I think Doug like more Smallwood than Barner. Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t be surprise if we add another RB and cut Barner as the season goes.

3)Sad to know about Boykin hip injury this week. Seems to be very serious as some teams reject him. Fan favorite player for some years, wish him well.

4)Just thinking out loud about Matthews and if he can play at a high level outside. I think he can play well against average coverage and decent QB play, but against top corners I don’t know.
Sometimes I remember Brandon Marshall while watching J-Matt play. Speed is not a problem for Marshall, but he is one inch and a half taller and can catch jump balls.

I’m not sure where you are getting Pederson likes Smallwood over Barner. I would like to hear that just because I don’t think Barner is really that good at all, but all the reports have Pederson raving about Barner.

Now that could just be Pederson being supportive of a player and putting some fluff out there, but I just don’t see a single thing that indicates the theory of him favoring Smallwood over Barner.

Damn right,,,, I consider it a blatant failure if we don’t win the division. I don’t see any reason why eagle fans should be expecting, or accepting some 6 win season,.. Division crown or Bust, that’s what the Eagles decided, when they opted to keep Bradford, Peters, SPROLES instead of going with a youth movement, and im grateful that they made this decision because I see a division Ripe for the taking, and while many national dopes see us as the least talented team in the division, I don’t see the blatant holes at key areas of our roster that I see as glaring weaknesses of our Rivals..
    ..
Why the hell should we,win the division when we have a Rival wifh No pass rush, weak sexondary and the least durable QB in the NFL? We have another rival wifh a pathetic OL who just dream teamed their way to a defense, good luck with that… And our 3rd rival still has a young unproven QB who hasn’t beat anyone with a proven record and needs to have a second season in a row before I believe he is anything more than hype like his predecessor RG3.. Why shouldn’t we win the division?
    ..
And the fact that a moron like ESP thinks we will be last in our division, totally backs me up lol

I am with you my fellow Eagle fanatic.
I eat drink and breath this team for over 40 years.

Each season we can all dream about having our players come together for that one magical season where every catch-able pass is caught and the ball just seems to bounce our way more often than not, then and all of the sudden we find ourselves at the top of our division and dare I say dominating some opponents that have those glaring weaknesses you mentioned.

Let me just say ANY team can have a great season and after watching what Carolina did last season made me believe that even this Eagles team can be THAT team as I feel we have more than enough talent to beat ANY team on any given Sunday.

  17. 17 Gian GEAGLE said at 8:57 AM on June 8th, 2016:

Yes sir… Normally im patient and im all about building the right way, respecting the player development process, but these last two seasons were rough and emotionally draining, so I really need an enjoyable season to recharge my fan battery… And I don’t think too much of our rivals rosters so to not take advantage of such a winnable division would really suck..
    ..
Here’s hoping for a divisipn crown. We aren’t winning a SUPERBOWL, but we have a young team, and there is value in them tasting success and having something to play for late in the year, playoff experience.

    …..
Sometime we get carried away with numbers(and I’m a numbers guy)…Numbers like: Bradford was the most accurate QB under pressure….

    Taken from the article:

Again, Sam Bradford did not play pretty well in 2015. He ranked: 11th in completion percentage, 25th in yards per attempt, 33rd in touchdown/interception ratio, 26th in passer rating, 34th in ESPN’s QBR stat, 24th in DVOA, and 24th in DYAR. His PFF grade ranked 12th, which is why they’re not as down on him, but that’s still not overly impressive. Even if you take Bradford’s best seven game stretch of 2015 and compare it to the best seven game stretches of other quarterbacks, he still only ranks 21st overall.

    ……
If someone(cough: D3FB for example) can help explain — they said Benny Logan will be a “fine nose tackle” … And Cox is a DE….Graham/Curry as edge rushers. Who would line up next to BL on inside? I thought that would be Cox. I’d consider BL a DT, not a NT in a 4-3. That’s where the confusion sets in….can someone explain the front 4? (I thought it was DE-DT-DT-DE)…

  26. 26 Bert's Bells said at 8:16 AM on June 7th, 2016:

The DTs do different things. The NT typically engages two blockers and the other (Under Tackle?, can’t remember) is the attacker. In classic Andy Reid terms Hollis Thomas vs Corey Simon. They’re still DT, but with specific roles.

  27. 27 Anders said at 8:33 AM on June 7th, 2016:

In the 4-3 you often have a 1 tech and 3 tech tackle. The 1 tech tackle will sometimes be called NT and the 3 tech will be called UT (under tackle in the under ront) or OT (overtackle in an over front, but not as used acronym)

  28. 28 D3FB said at 8:50 AM on June 7th, 2016:

Cox will be the 3tech. Logan will be the 1 tech.

NT while classically thought of as the 34 war daddy type, is also used to describe the 1 tech DTs (because some people line them up at the 1 tech and others at the 2i technique). It’s interchangeable language, personal preference thing.

Cox can play either but will be used at 3 tech because it maximizes his potential, Logan can play either and will start at the other position. You can play them as right DT and left DT but again you want Cox with as many 1 on 1s as possible so you probably wouldn’t. Martin is a solid backup 1 tech reminds me a bit of Mike Patterson. Beau while not ideal can at least do some run clogging and has value on short yardage situations and with Logan capable of playing the 3 and Vinny being able to play Nascar DT in pass sets you could conceivably keep him if none of the young guys step up.

  29. 29 eagleyankfan said at 9:08 AM on June 7th, 2016:

Ok –not including stunts…. Benny will line up(mostly) on the inside of the guard(strong side?) and demand the double team. Cox(mostly) will line up just outside the other guard to create the 1-on-1 (theory is, center will help block Benny, leaving Cox with 1-on-1.)

  30. 30 Anders said at 9:39 AM on June 7th, 2016:

Schwartz uses a fair bit of over front, so the 1 tech will be on the weak side

  31. 31 D3FB said at 9:55 AM on June 7th, 2016:

In the below picture Cox is Dareus Logan is Charles. The NT lines up either on the inside of the G (2i) or the outside should of the C (shade/1tech).

He obviously didn’t agree with the way Juan implemented the defense behind him, but didn’t seem to offer much assistance either. I haven’t seen a single article this offseason try to pimp Bradford’s value. He just isn’t a Top 10 guy and likely isn’t a Top 20 guy either.

Other teams realize that and why the FA market (and trade market) was very lukewarm on him. Yeah he is certainly a starting-caliber QB in the NFL and isn’t among the worst options. He just isn’t very good either (20-25).

    Some promising tidbits:
    ..
    1) Bennie Logan wemt from 315-320lb NT, to around 305lbs these days to transition to the 4-3, specifically he wants to become more of a factor on pass rushing downs.

There is NO REASON not to be excited about Logan because of the 4-3, he got plenty experience as a 4-3 DT at LSU, and there was a ton of talk early in his career from fans questioning if he was Big enough to play NT in a 3-4.. Logan often ISNT viewed as one of The players who benefit from a switch to the schwartz defense, but we could be pleasantly surprised..
    .,
    2) ROCKIN Rod McLeod impressed by Jalen Mills and thinks that Mills reminds him a lot of himself (Undrafted kid)…”Mills is doing a great job, taking coaching well,,improving each and every day. He is going to be a Good Player, man, special teams and all. He is just willing to work. You see him after practice too, getting work in on his own. You can see a good player. You like to see that from a young guy, he just looks hungry honestky”.,
    .
If anything, at least Mills hunger should push other young corners Like JaCorey, Countess. Rice…. Heck, he may end up pushing the veterans Nolan and Brooks for that nickel spot. It would be HUGE for us if we find out that Rowe,Mills and JaCorey are all Legit

I am however holding this defense to the standard of needing to finish top 5 in total sacks. Anything less has to be considered a failure assuming injuries dont cripple us of course,, I can’t see how this defensive rpster can consider the season a success if they don’t finish top 5 in sacks when we have the personnel and a scheme tailor made to allow the DL to Hunt

  61. 61 Ben said at 12:45 AM on June 8th, 2016:

I would settle for having a 15th ranked D and winning our division.
I think our offense needs to step up and give the D something to play for.
I am not worried about Sam as much as I worry about the receivers catching the ball.
If Greg Lewis can get those drops fixed this team can go places.

  62. 62 MagHelpsHubby.... said at 4:11 AM on June 8th, 2016:

  63. 63 truehaynes said at 3:32 PM on June 7th, 2016:

The low end of your sack projections is 55. Pretty unrealistic. I would say 12 from Cox, 10 from curry , 7 each for barwin and Graham, 5 fom lbs, 2 from safety, 4 from other days besides Cox. That puts us at 47 which could easily lead the league

  64. 64 Gian GEAGLE said at 7:18 PM on June 7th, 2016:

Yeah there’s no chance in hell that we get 55 sacks realistically speaking..
    ..
Not exactly my “expectations”, more like Goals Id like them to strive for, understanding that a few will definitely fall short(unfortunately) ..
    .
BARWIN, Curry and BG probably aren’t all going to reach 10 sacks, but in This scheme, I think they will get enough snaps to set a 10 sack goal for their caliber of player.
    .
Hopefully Cox is extended before training camp so we can root fpr Cox to get. Million sacks without worrying about what it does to negotiations
    .,
BG and BARWIN are established enough to where we don’t need Sack #’s to know they are probably doing a solid job, but because curry paid his dues playing the good soldier all these years, I’d like to see him explode and really enjoy some success in this scheme. He deserves it
    ..
I’d say Marcus Smith is the one I care the most about him hitting his mark. Invested two years of patience, so I think it’s fair to hold him to the standards of delivering 1’sack every 4 games this year, since he is playing for a future in this city
    ..
If I had to say which group is least likely to hit their mark, it’s prbably definitely the Defensive tackle group. And if they do actually reach that sack goal it most likely means cox chased QB into their arms Half the time
    ..
The final sack total DOESNT interest me much, but I’ll consider it a failure of underachieving if this defense Doesnt finish top 5 in sacks, we have the Coordinator, the scheme, and the horses to set that type of Loafty expectation

Bennie Logan only had 5 sacks in 2 years in college (we won’t count his freshman year) so a switch to the 4-3 isn’t exactly guaranteed to make him into a sack artist.

Thanks, had no idea they kept track of college sack stats. Appreciate it bro. I learn something every day

True but Cox wasn’t forcing one on one match-ups for him either.
Once Cox starts throwing his weight around it’s going to be fun to watch.
Logan should see a lot of one on ones and I think he will have a better season than anyone expects in this scheme.
Can’t wait for the leash to come off Cox.
He is already the best player on our team, and I see him becoming the best player in the NFL this season.

Not sure why people are disagreeing with PFF on the roster position. PHI absolutely has a good roster. That’s why 2015 was such a disappointment.

  81. 81 Media Mike said at 5:23 AM on June 8th, 2016:

    Two-fold.

1 – You are what your record says you are. So we’re sort of stuck with 7-9 being our deal.

2 – I’m so fearful about continued uselessness out of Kelce, a further decline from Peters, and the specter of Barbre Doll haunting the LG position is going to keep this O-line as a mess that drags down the team.

But I think there is a lot of talent here in several positions.

  82. 82 eagleyankfan said at 7:26 AM on June 8th, 2016:

That’s where it’s easy to get sucked in…you look at last year and there were spots at the end of the season the Eagles could have taken control(even though bad play was happening). You take that ‘almost’ feeling and look at the additions made and think, these additions(RG, Safety etc) and think that’s enough to get off the 7-9 mark…even with the questions on line(Peters/Kelce)…I do think, without question – this is a better roster. As you’re fearful of the OL, I’m cautious about the rb’s durability….

  83. 83 bill said at 8:20 AM on June 8th, 2016:

The thing that makes me shake my head at their analysis is that Peters and Bradford are listed as elite. Peters, was elite, now is very good when healthy, really don’t see him playing the whole season, and if I had to pick an o/u, would put it at about 8 games. Of course, he might play quite a few of those games with a big injury, thereby decreasing his ability further. Reminds me of Ryan Howard circa 2012 – everyone thought he still had time until father time smacked him. Age can cash in with interest very quickly.

Bradford? I’m one of his bigger cheerleaders, and he’s never been elite, and it is highly unlikely he ever will be. He can be quite good still, but that’s very different from elite, and even ‘quite good’ is a relatively low probability.

People are severely underrating this roster. The defense has stud talent at all 3 levels and up the middle. Bradford can be good enough and all we need is 1 or 2 skill position players to step up

  86. 86 P_P_K said at 9:35 PM on June 7th, 2016:

I’m hopeful you are right but a bunch of things have to click together. The general thinking seems to be the Eagles are likely around an 8-8 team. I can’t quite tell if I think they are a 10-6/11-5 team because I am more knowledgable or because I’m a homer.

  87. 87 Media Mike said at 5:19 AM on June 8th, 2016:

There is a lot to like about this roster for sure. There are also some flaws in it.

  88. 88 bill said at 8:13 AM on June 8th, 2016:

In the salary cap/FA era, pretty much every roster has its flaws. The key is having enough talent at the most scheme critical positions to cover the flaws. I mean, Kurt Coleman was playing safety for a Super Bowl team last year. So it’s not like you have to have a flawless roster.

To me, the Eagles have a pretty good roster. Not currently in league with the real SB contenders, primarily due to the scheme changes (players have to get comfortable in the scheme and perhaps most importantly, coaches have to learn to maximize the talent they have within their scheme), but also with Bradford, the range of likely outcomes is very large. I actually think it’ll be fun to follow this team for the first few weeks as they establish an identity. Could go really downhill from there, or it could blast off. But even in best case scenario, I don’t think I see this team winning more than one playoff game.

All this discussion of Cox not participating in any team drills is overblown in my opinion. I’m guessing it was clearly an agreement made between the Eagles and Cox’s agent to show up at MTA’s but to not have him practice fully, until they get a contract ironed out. It saves the litany of stories about him not being there while protecting him from a freak injury in June. Win Win
