Halftime Update: PS 1 – PHI 14, TB 6

Forget the backup OL struggles. Forget Chase Daniel. Even forget the return of the 4-3. The one drive by Carson Wentz was the key to the first half.

Wentz didn’t do anything magical, but just his presence brought life to the game. He got the players around him to pick up their level of play. He showed a strong arm and the ability to move around. Wentz was tough in the pocket, standing tall and taking hits when he had to. He was a bit high on 2 throws, but they were still catchable.

The game just felt different with Wentz in there. He can do things Chase Daniel never could or will be able to. Wentz can do things Sam Bradford hasn’t done since his college days. You can see raw talent with Wentz. That doesn’t guarantee that he’ll work out, but man it gets you excited about the future.

I’ll talk about other bright spots and the negative issues after the game.

Looking forward to the second half.

Yeah, it was a throw structurally permitted by the defense, but at least he makes it look like a normal play.

You can definitely see the potential. Very accurate on the move.

Going to nitpick here but Turner was pretty much wide open and Wentz killed that drive with a not so good throw.

  12. 12 shah8 said at 8:57 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Yeah, he’s probably number three because he’s not finding people in the system properly. Best plays so far are fairly sandloty…

  13. 13 Ark87 said at 8:57 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Yeah, some impressive stuff that play, but the throw needed to get to the sticks in bounds. Duress and all

Definitely has to get this fixed since it was also an issue in college for him too.

Curious if people here see that as a positive or negative.

  59. 59 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:27 PM on August 11th, 2016:

For me – overall positive. McNabb was a great QB. Not perfect. Not elite. But damn good. It was his personality and perceived lack leadership skills that irked people, imo.

  60. 60 Jarock said at 9:33 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Always felt Andy sabotaged Donovan late in his career. Signing Vick was a mistake. Then Shady and Desean decided they had to have Dog Killer as their QB.

Donny didn’t do himself many favors either. Still, hate how things ended.

  61. 61 Insomniac said at 9:36 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Mr. Rogers is our Offensive Coordinator. Would you be my neighbor?

  72. 72 shah8 said at 9:36 PM on August 11th, 2016:

gonna watch one more more series before I stop tonight, but I’m not very happy with Wentz. He doesn’t seem to have a lot of natural accuracy, and his process goes bad if there are too many bodies around him. He’s not *bad* per se, but this sort of play is about what you’d expect from the physical high second round QBs, not a first round QB.

  73. 73 mksp said at 9:37 PM on August 11th, 2016:

This is about the comment that I think we all expected out of you after his first preseason game after playing in the FCS.

    Good work!

  76. 76 shah8 said at 9:40 PM on August 11th, 2016:

I actually remember Webb’s 2010 preseason games. Don’t you remember him ending a couple of preseason bodies’ season with a nasty facemask?

  77. 77 RogerPodacter said at 9:42 PM on August 11th, 2016:

its in the first half thread

  78. 78 shah8 said at 9:43 PM on August 11th, 2016:

At the bottom of it all, Wentz needs to make the job of catching the ball a bit easier, and he needs to play better in structured play.

  79. 79 shah8 said at 9:45 PM on August 11th, 2016:

There are a couple of good plays, but most of what I’ve seen shows a dude who can play sandlot well, but is a bit slow if there are multiple reads, and doesn’t have a huge amount of touch or microaccuracy on his throws.

  80. 80 mksp said at 9:46 PM on August 11th, 2016:

    Agreed.

We’re also evaluating his temperament, his body language, his arm, his athleticism, and his intelligence.

Is it translating to the NFL, surrounded by NFL-level athletes?

    Early on, he’s been encouraging.

The ball placement can improve. He’s not lacking arm talent.

  81. 81 shah8 said at 9:46 PM on August 11th, 2016:

no he’s not lacking in arm talent, but he needs to be reliable.

  82. 82 Dude said at 9:47 PM on August 11th, 2016:

    Microreliable

  83. 83 A_T_G said at 9:47 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Those QBs that think they can just run around and make stuff happen piss me off too.

On the other hand, we knew he was raw and surly he is overexcited. Luckily, he seems to have the arm to make all of he NFL throws. I know how much you value your hat ability.

  84. 84 shah8 said at 9:49 PM on August 11th, 2016:

After watching Ponder, and the usual perpetual excuses for all of the Kellen Moores of the world, of course I value a good arm.

Foles couldn’t be accurate outside of a couple of throws, even though he has a strong arm. That always seems to be weird to me…

Jameis Winston has a strong arm, but he rarely ever truly shows that and be accurate…

  85. 85 RC5000 said at 9:40 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Why not go follow that special teams ace Joe Webb.

  97. 97 Iskar36 said at 9:53 PM on August 11th, 2016:

While I understood the booing, I hated the fact that ANY injury was assumed to be the other team stalling. Sure there were times the other time was trying to slow the pace, but honestly, fans booed so often, that we booed actually injured players more often than not.

  98. 98 Ark87 said at 9:54 PM on August 11th, 2016:

  114. 114 BobSmith77 said at 10:11 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Young was still notably better than McMahon. McMahon running out of the end zone is such a fitting summary clip of his time here as the QB in ’05. Sunk their season that year after McNabb went down.

I was at the season finale in ’05 (New Year’s Day) badly hung-over and that might have been McMahon’s best start as an Eagle. Still wasn’t very good although I’ll admit that 72 hour window before I went back up to Boston is still blurry.

Agree with my friend on this one – there is one thing Eagles’ fans agreed with tonight with almost universally and it is that Daniel sucks. He loved the mock jeer Daniel would get for completing a pass.

  118. 118 The original AG said at 10:05 PM on August 11th, 2016:

If tonight was any indication, there is no reason he should have gotten the money that he did.

  119. 119 BobSmith77 said at 10:07 PM on August 11th, 2016:

I wonder if some creative fan will buy a knockoff Daniel jersey, paint a paper bag, and wear it over his head to games this year.

Do they even allow you to wear a paper bag over your head at games anymore? It seems like they have cracked down pretty severely on people who get decked in ornate costumes.

  120. 120 The original AG said at 10:08 PM on August 11th, 2016:

  125. 125 BobSmith77 said at 10:18 PM on August 11th, 2016:

Wentz at least gave a reason to this game though for an extended stretch.

Justice had no problem carving up this secondary though and man the two starting CBs on this team are so underwhelming. Beckham must be licking his chops to go 1-on-1 with Brooks or McKelvin even for 20-25% snaps.
