Halftime Update: PS 1 – PHI 14, TB 6
Posted: August 11th, 2016 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 128 Comments »Forget the backup OL struggles. Forget Chase Daniel. Even forget the return of the 4-3. The one drive by Carson Wentz was the key to the first half.
Wentz didn’t do anything magical, but just his presence brought life to the game. He got the players around him to pick up their level of play. He showed a strong arm and the ability to move around. Wentz was tough in the pocket, standing tall and taking hits when he had to. He was a bit high on 2 throws, but they were still catchable.
The game just felt different with Wentz in there. He can do things Chase Daniel never could or will be able to. Wentz can do things Sam Bradford hasn’t done since his college days. You can see raw talent with Wentz. That doesn’t guarantee that he’ll work out, but man it gets you excited about the future.
I’ll talk about other bright spots and the negative issues after the game.
Looking forward to the second half.

Superbowl! Just kidding.
Stop being coy, Tommy. Wentz >>> Rodgers.

🙂
Nice third down throw.
Just short of the 3rd down. Somewhere, Chip Kelly is smiling.
Yeah, it was a throw structurally permitted by the defense, but at least he makes it look like a normal play.
You can definitely see the potential. Very accurate on the move.
Haha, thats a great highlight. who was the goober who stayed down in his stance that long on a live ball? I missed the #.
Vaitai a.k.a Big V
Going to nitpick here but Turner was pretty much wide open and Wentz killed that drive with a not so good throw.
Yeah, he’s probably number three because he’s not finding people in the system properly. Best plays so far are fairly sandloty…
Yeah, some impressive stuff that play, but the throw needed to get to the sticks in bounds. Duress and all
Definitely has to get this fixed since it was also an issue in college for him too.
That was the running Shah came to see!
Ole tiny-hands himself for a TFL
Watkins and Reynolds playing well? It’s pretty hard to believe.
I’m pretty sure Wentz just talked about getting on the same page-width as the rest of the guys. Ah, football players.
Somehow, seeing Andrews limp off does not fill me with dread.
Bad throw. Hit the WR in the hands.
Should try to stick it in their face mask Blake to Featherstone style.
It would be nice if he actually lead people on his throws.
It would be. I would also be nice to see his receivers not drop the ball.
I think you probably should drop any consideration that this WR corps would be better than horrendous.
I’m an optimist.
Not very happy with Wentz’ micro-accuracy…
I agree. That last one hit the ring fingers before the index fingers. What the hell is he doing?!
lol at the replay of that scramble. OL #72 just ran upfield and didn’t hit anybody
a catch!
that’s a Big boy
When was the last time we ran a plain old slant like it is supposed to be run? I can’t remember one that looked that…comfortable.
Loved seeing Wentz read that play correctly.
If Vick ever learned that trick that 2010 magic may have lived a bit longer
Between that and sliding, Wentz is already up two on Vick.
? miracle at meadowlands started with that sort of play.
If you’re talking hot reads and stuff, a lot of that is on Reid.
i posted that one for you, had Completely forgot about Vick until you showed up lol
While Daniels reminds me of Kolb, Wentz reminds me of McNabb. Super athletic, generally good, but not the most accurate. Worms beware.
The worms lived a good peaceful few years.
Damn it Turner
He put that one right in the bread basket.
“Goode hit.” Ha!
what people will do in the regular season, if Wentz plays, is do a lot of mush rush.
good to see means’ play continue
Did Means just do the Trotter celebration?
Gladiator mentality, win the crowd
i think i saw reynolds do the same when he got that open field TFL
So who’s going to sign Marcus Smith?
Redskins
Steven Means already taking Smiths job 🙁
but by the transitive property Steven Means is better the a first-round draft pick, and we got him for next to nothing, gj Howie!
Wait, Means is going to be a terrible disappointment consistently across rapidly changing circumstances?
That was Marcus’ job, right?
No MSII sighting?
out with concussion from before hte game
Tampa has terrible depth. I guess so do we.
“Lot of time, nobody open” is a good counter to the “quick pressure, nobody open” that they established in the first half.
Chess match, Doug.
yeah he needs seasoning.
Shades of McNabb
Curious if people here see that as a positive or negative.
For me – overall positive. McNabb was a great QB. Not perfect. Not elite. But damn good. It was his personality and perceived lack leadership skills that irked people, imo.
Always felt Andy sabotaged Donovan late in his career. Signing Vick was a mistake. Then Shady and Desean decided they had to have Dog Killer as their QB.
Donny didn’t do himself many favors either. Still, hate how things ended.
Andy isn’t the type of coach to do that. McNabb was done and it showed.
A white McNabb would be embraced by this city
Well, defense is fun.
Gause wrapped that up nicely.
I’ll see myself out.
good to see the tip drill pay off
One day, that will terrify me.
hopefully
Today.
Love the athleticism. Don’t want the future of the franchise hurt in a meaningless preseason game.
Running ability. Check.
Can take a hit. Check.
Now stop that.
Cox giving the rook encouragement when he came off.
Mr. Rogers is our Offensive Coordinator. Would you be my neighbor?
gonna watch one more more series before I stop tonight, but I’m not very happy with Wentz. He doesn’t seem to have a lot of natural accuracy, and his process goes bad if there are too many bodies around him. He’s not *bad* per se, but this sort of play is about what you’d expect from the physical high second round QBs, not a first round QB.
This is about the comment that I think we all expected out of you after his first preseason game after playing in the FCS.
Good work!
If you think I’m being too negative, go right ahead…
The Joe Webb comparison is missing, but beyond that…
I actually remember Webb’s 2010 preseason games. Don’t you remember him ending a couple of preseason bodies’ season with a nasty facemask?
its in the first half thread
At the bottom of it all, Wentz needs to make the job of catching the ball a bit easier, and he needs to play better in structured play.
There are a couple of good plays, but most of what I’ve seen shows a dude who can play sandlot well, but is a bit slow if there are multiple reads, and doesn’t have a huge amount of touch or microaccuracy on his throws.
Agreed.
We’re also evaluating his temperament, his body language, his arm, his athleticism, and his intelligence.
Is it translating to the NFL, surrounded by NFL-level athletes?
Early on, he’s been encouraging.
The ball placement can improve. He’s not lacking arm talent.
no he’s not lacking in arm talent, but he needs to be reliable.
Microreliable
Those QBs that think they can just run around and make stuff happen piss me off too.
On the other hand, we knew he was raw and surly he is overexcited. Luckily, he seems to have the arm to make all of he NFL throws. I know how much you value your hat ability.
After watching Ponder, and the usual perpetual excuses for all of the Kellen Moores of the world, of course I value a good arm.
Foles couldn’t be accurate outside of a couple of throws, even though he has a strong arm. That always seems to be weird to me…
Jameis Winston has a strong arm, but he rarely ever truly shows that and be accurate…
Why not go follow that special teams ace Joe Webb.
Good night.
Oh no, there is a Smith III, god help us
Maybe we can make room for Smith III by cutting Smith II.
but together they make Smith V
The cheerleaders are in midseason form.
MM is so damn pissed somewhere, whether he is watching the game or not
Marty Mornhinweg?
Media Mike has a blood bind with Barner. When Barner does bad, MM is PISSED, and every good thing he does pisses him off even more lol
True.
Mike Martz?
So happy I don’t have to boo at injured players under suspicion of milking a free timeout to stall the tempo
While I understood the booing, I hated the fact that ANY injury was assumed to be the other team stalling. Sure there were times the other time was trying to slow the pace, but honestly, fans booed so often, that we booed actually injured players more often than not.
Confession, I was one of them. I started to boo instinctively, and then it hit me that that isn’t a thing anymore.
I don’t know about that. There were many deliberate stalls.
Do we really need challenges during preseason?
I think we’ve answered any questions about Wentz’s toughness.
That’s enough hits for today.
Thing to watch next game, see if he gets better at managing pocket.
Oh yes, this is important because Chase fucking Daniels is not an actual serious option at QB.
He scored a touchdown!
They checked to see if he still had a pulse, patted him on the butt and sent him back in.
I’d bang that cheeleader
I look for the ones I wouldn’t. I don’t think I’m as picky as you (since I haven’t found one yet)
ok, done… see allay’all next week!
Not if we see you first!
McCloud Bethel-Thompson would be an interesting backup to the backup. Unfortunately, there can be only one.
If Bradford goes down, would Daniel be the worst QB this team has had for an extended stretch since McMahon in ’05?
I’d hope they put Wentz in.
We are not acknowledging the Vince Young era, right?
Young was still notably better than McMahon. McMahon running out of the end zone is such a fitting summary clip of his time here as the QB in ’05. Sunk their season that year after McNabb went down.
I was at the season finale in ’05 (New Year’s Day) badly hung-over and that might have been McMahon’s best start as an Eagle. Still wasn’t very good although I’ll admit that 72 hour window before I went back up to Boston is still blurry.
Sanchez was pretty bad.
Don’t dance on short yardage, kid.
Plays like that will keep Barner on my he team.
Agree with my friend on this one – there is one thing Eagles’ fans agreed with tonight with almost universally and it is that Daniel sucks. He loved the mock jeer Daniel would get for completing a pass.
If tonight was any indication, there is no reason he should have gotten the money that he did.
I wonder if some creative fan will buy a knockoff Daniel jersey, paint a paper bag, and wear it over his head to games this year.
Do they even allow you to wear a paper bag over your head at games anymore? It seems like they have cracked down pretty severely on people who get decked in ornate costumes.
Shame really. Sometimes you need that to send a message.
and with thought Sammy Dollaz was overpaid.
I still think he’s mainly here to help Wentz .He’ll probably be Wentz backup when Sam leaves. Once season starts everything changes with reps and even coaching. Still don’t think he’s worth that money but it is what it is.
A QB that praises the fans, takes responsibility, is personable…
I don’t have an appropriate response.
#5 will always love you. It is shame that sound byte will be arguably McNabb’s most memorable one here and it was after he was done playing here.
Wentz at least gave a reason to this game though for an extended stretch.
Justice had no problem carving up this secondary though and man the two starting CBs on this team are so underwhelming. Beckham must be licking his chops to go 1-on-1 with Brooks or McKelvin even for 20-25% snaps.
So Chase was that bad? I can’t believe i couldn’t watch this game.
He was playing with the 2nd team against the Bucs’ 1st team and none of the Eagles receivers ever got open.
can’t believe our WRs were so bad, especially b/c we were blessed with Mac and Djax for so many years.
