Nightmare

Up 10 in Dallas in the 4th quarter. And then Dallas outscores you 19-3 to win the game in overtime. What a friggin’ nightmare.

Doug Pederson had his worst game of the year. Receivers dropped key passes. STs allowed a fake punt to go for a 30-yard game and kickstart a scoring drive. The defense played really well at times, but couldn’t get off the field on the game-tying drive or in OT.

What an absolutely frustrating loss.

Dallas now sits at 6-1 with a comfortable lead. The Eagles are tied with the Giants at 4-3.

I’m too pissed off to right any worthwhile analysis right now. That was such a winnable game and the Eagles blew it.

That’s the first time all year this team has built a 10-point lead and blown it.

Aside from the standings, the Dallas hype train and the Dak Prescott worshiping is going to make it brutal to watch/read/listen to football coverage for at least the next week.

Ugh.

I’m ready for the next head coach search to begin. Pederson is the village idiot. Handed the game away with the worst playcalling I’ve seen in years. Part time pee wee coaches are laughing at him. Complete moron.

He cannot handle close games. He shits the bed.

If having the QB take a knee twice is better play calling than you come up with, then you shouldn’t be calling plays in the NFL. Or college. Or high school. Or middle school. In fact, go sell insurance or something.

So you just want us to start searching for a coach? You don’t even have a suggestion as to who that coach should be? Please go to bed. Nobody is “happy” with Doug but damn dude, you’re going off the deep end. There were other contributing factors to this loss besides his play calling.

Doug Peterson single handedly blew that game! He was awful and was not only completely out coached but his play calling looked like he got it out of a trash can. He really did everything he could to lose the game. Not 1 pass downfield the entire game. The pass in the flat to Sproles in the 4th quarter in field goal range may be the worst call I have seen in a long time. Run the ball for even 2 yards and kick the field goal but instead they lose 10 yards that is beyond stupid. That field would have won the game. He owes his players an apology! Wow inexperience showed big time tonight. Wentz can do so much more but he throws screens and 5 yard passes. Every person in the stadium knew the pass was going to Burton especially the cowboys. Where is Ertz??? Where is Celek??? Doug has no clue!

Come on, really? The trick play almost worked, he would have been a genius. The swing pass was a bad snap. Who knows if that was the call. At the end of the half, Doug’s call got us a FG that most coaches don’t get. Do you even remember what this team was a year ago?

Having huff throw his first career pass in that situation is idiocy. Following it up with a pass 6 yards behind the line of scrimage in that situation is double idiocy. The series after that was brutal as well. When the game is on the line doug shits the bed.

  15. 15 A_T_G said at 12:38 AM on October 31st, 2016:

It slipped off of the fingertips of an open Matthews. When Wentz’s passes do that we blame the receive…or the thrower.

I didn’t like the call- we were beating them straight up, but blaming the entire loss on that play is silly. Beginnng preparations for the next coach is exponentially more so.

  16. 16 DarthBanner said at 12:39 AM on October 31st, 2016:

Unless Doug can’t cut it as a play caller and refuses to give it up. Those two plays took 3 points off of the board and cgave the cowboys back the momentum. Absolutely cost us the game and its all on doug.

Crazy…very upset to see that we had the chance to win and failed. I never comment on these things but I’ll tell you what…Doug showed how much faith and coincidence he had in his receivers. We have a qb who can throw the ball and we keep it short? I’m not advocating for trading our picks for a receiver, but is obvious that none of ours can threaten a defense. Frustrated!!!

  39. 39 jaws80 said at 1:18 AM on October 31st, 2016:

frustrated as all hell. survived an hour of replaying everything while putting kids to bed. and am very calm and settled on blaming (feel the need to blame) it all on the receivers. The drops, the not getting open, and being bad so Pederson nor Wentz has confidence to go longer than ten yards.

Zero plays, in the whole game, zero times was a receiver wide open. Am I right? Or even just two yards open. Just one misplay by the defense should get a receiver wide open once in a game. Or maybe wentz missed seeing them all. So many times Wentz had to have great throws just for a five yard gain, between two defenders.

  48. 48 SteveH said at 1:02 AM on October 31st, 2016:

My favorite play of the night: the flair out to Sproles 6 yards behind the scrimmage that took us out of field goal range halfway through the 4th quarter. Made even better when the replays showed that we were relying on Jason Kelce on a gimpy ankle to try and reach Sean Lee for the block. Fucking genius.

I *HATED* our offensive game-plan. So much for not trying to harness Wentz’ aggression, its embarrassing how many throws were behind the line of scrimmage. Not a single shot down the field all game.

Tip of the hat to Jason Kelce for completely whiffing on the block that lead to the Smallwood fumble. Nice to see him holding onto his job.

Also, Fletcher Cox, you’re getting paid 100 million dollars to be a wrecking ball, you’ve failed to show up in 3 strait games. Get your shit together.

Prescott was rattled and we let him off the hook. If he didn’t have that fucking amazing OL he’d be a nobody.

Torrey Smith at 5m a year – come on Howie, work your magic!

While we lost to a team I loathe, this loss wasn’t like the Washington loss where we didn’t perform well. I feel Philly was the better team but beat itself with a couple of big mistakes and poor play-calling at important points in the game.

Just a quick question about Dez Bryant defensive strategy: Aren’t all of his red zone touchdowns variations of jump-ball / back-shoulder fades? In other words, in the red zone, maybe don’t worry about him beating you long, just turn around when you get into the end zone and catch the ball yourself.

  63. 63 DJH said at 1:18 AM on October 31st, 2016:

I’m surprisingly calm after this one. Pederson was way too conservative and got cute at the wrong time, but overall he’s been good.

We aren’t doing anything in the playoffs without WRs and CBs.

Keep Wentz healthy and let him develop. Need to be a more aggressive down the field as the season goes if only to let him develop.

Need some offensive weapons if we really want to see what Wentz can do. Which of our WR would have caught the TD pass that Dez did?

  64. 64 jaws80 said at 1:28 AM on October 31st, 2016:

i am calm too. i think just having it so blatant that the receivers are not good enough, that i am not going crazy thinking that, makes me calmer. I have been on the being patient side with the receivers, but after that game, I hope the team is not going to go into next season with the same group.

The Dez catch? Maybe Mathrews but that is all, on a good day, but he could also just as easily have dropped the Witten catch at the end.

I don’t think it’s Greg Lewis’ fault the WRs stink. They look like the same guys they were before he got here. It’s a talent issue. Nelson Agholor is a first round bust. Matthews is an okay receiver but ideally a number two or number three option in your passing game, not a lead option. DGB is a physical specimen type who doesn’t know the full playbook and has suspect actual receiving skills. Huff is a RB playing WR. Can’t turn chicken shit into chicken salad. Want to see what happens when Lewis has actually talented players to work with.

To me the worst part of losing to Dallas is not the Dallas hype the national media indulges in. That always happens, and it just makes the schadenfreude that much more delicious when the Cowboys inevitably shit the bed late in the season/in the playoffs (when they make the playoffs). Their QB is just pretty good and their defense is mediocre. They’re not winning the Super Bowl with that team no matter how much idiots like Skip Bayless bloviate about them.

To me the worst part about losing to Dallas is the absolute irrational stupidity it brings out in Eagles fans. Fire Pederson? Trade our next three first round picks for Alshon Jeffery, a receiver who’s not even that great and whom we may not be able to re-sign this offseason? Cut young player X because he made a critical mistake? Give me an effing break. We’re building a program here. There are inevitably stumbling blocks when you’re building a program, but I’d argue we’re still ahead of schedule. Even if we make the playoffs this season, we’re not winning a Super Bowl with a rookie QB with a shitty supporting cast. This season is still ultimately about Wentz growing, and he still appears to be doing that. Keep that in mind.

  71. 71 DarthBanner said at 1:52 AM on October 31st, 2016:

Prescott only had 19 completions but 250yds compared to Wentz with 30 completions for just under 200yds. Dak is a 5th round qb and they’re giving h more freedom in the offense while Wentz just audibles between run plays

Helps to have Dez to throw to, and to have all day in the pocket. Dallas is developing Dak right – protect him with a good line and strong run game.

My biggest fear this year is that Wentz will get killed behind this OL and virtually non-existent run game. Priority number 1 is still getting Wentz through the season healthy and not shell-shocked to the point where he loses his confidence. Instead of going away, that fear is growing weekly.

Yeah, I wasn’t clear. I wasn’t saying I’m glad to hear it because I think it means he is going to fix it.

I meant that I like hearing it because I think it means that his teammates and coaches are holding him accountable and it is getting to him. The team isn’t accepting it.

I think the most unforgivable thing about last night was Pederson punting rather than going for the 53 yard field goal. I’d understand if Sturgis was struggling but he’s 14/15 this year and already nailed a 55 yard field goal with plenty of leg. Just inexcusable.

Yeah, for as much balls as he has shown during the season it’s a real head scratcher he pussied out on going for the kick. I get that if you miss Dallas has 10-15 yards to get in Bailey’s range for a kick but you just can’t wilt like that.

  94. 94 Gary Barnes said at 8:18 AM on October 31st, 2016:

The defense was inconsistent, but mostly played well enough to win. The ST did give up the 20 yd fake punt, but again did enough to win the game.

The offense is really where our problems lie.

Kudos to Sproles, but where the heck is Matthews, Barner, Smallwood in the game plan? They had, what, 4 carries between them? I know Smallwood put the ball on the carpet, but he is a young player. You’ve got to support him and give him other chances. You’ve got to give the defense different looks and grind out clock.

Are we ever going to see Ertz emerge? I do not see it, but then I’ve been a skeptic for years now – injuries and inconsistency seem to be his main contributions plus Wentz & him do not seem to be connected. Is he not getting open? Is Wentz missing him? Is Ertz being used to block more?

The WR, ughhh. Drops were horrible and we cannot seem to run a play over 10 yds deep. Visions of last year. We still need someone who blow the top of the defense and create space.

Wentz, hmmm. Good and bad, but if Pederson’s calls were so bad then why did Wentz not change them at the line? He has that authority and understanding from all we’ve been told and seen. Either way, he played mostly well, but still made some throws we need cleaned up.

The OL actually played pretty well I thought especially with the injury forcing Wiz to come in. Vitai had a much better game and Peters/Kelce were more consistent.

Pederson needs to coach and play call to WIN the game, not lose it. He was so conservative and predictable. Dallas was begging to be beat and he kept letting them off the hook. Frustrating similar to the DET and WSH losses. Growing pains I guess.

Dallas is not that good, all the fluffers will continue to butt kiss them, but if the Eagles play to their capability, we can beat them. The silver lining I guess.

“The OL actually played pretty well”

I would argue that those two facts are very much directly related. Dallas’s DL is trash, and yet Pederson didn’t trust his line enough to dial up the deep shots. They generally only had to pass block for 2 seconds or less for 95% of the plays. They ought to look good under those circumstances. But the result is a severely hobbled game plan. It’s going to take a couple of years to dig out of the OL hole that Chip dug.

“Receivers dropped key passes.” … how is that possible after reading an article about how good the wr’s are and how happy the coaches staff is with them? I thought since Greg Lewis played as an Eagle, he was going to fix the wr’s? Or ex-Eagle player Staley was going to fix the RB’s? (just having some fun).
    ….
Concerns at the beginning of the season still apply. (Pederson, no talent at WR’s, etc). If that all still applies, so does my expectations of this team. Year 1 and rebuilding. Going to be bumpy ride before it smooths out….
    ….
Every play can’t be a quick pass at the line of scrimmage to a wr. We got on Chip Kelly for running the same plays over over….this offense is no different. Wenz would audible and the Dallas defense was pointing to where the play was going…
    …..
Let me clarify my opinion of the wr’s. Every team should have A JMatt or a Huff or an Aggie — but no team should have all 3……

My fear is this loss will linger and they won’t be prepared to take on the Giants next week.
