Wise Coach

Doug Pederson is a rookie coach and has such a limited background that we don’t have much to judge him on. We’re basically learning who he is and how he does things as the season goes along. So far, he’s done a fantastic job coaching this team.

Last week I wrote about his message to the team after the ugly loss to the Skins. I said Pederson would keep things positive and sure enough that’s exactly what he did. Pederson learned from Andy Reid, who studied Bill Walsh. Ranting and raving to appease fans or the media just wasn’t going to happen. There was a time and place for that, but it had to be the right situation.

I thought Pederson would stay positive because it would send the right message to his team. You focus on the fact the problems are about execution and not talent. That tells the group of players that you believe in them. The answers are in that room, not in next year’s free agents or draft class. You help your players stay confident by showing you’re confident in them.

On Sunday Pederson backed up those words with actions. The Eagles scored a TD to go up 6-3. On the extra point attempt, MIN roughed the kicker. That gave Pederson the option of how to use the penalty. He had the ball put at the 2-yard line and went for the 2-point conversion. Carson Wentz powered his way into the end zone and the Eagles led 8-3.

There isn’t a ton of conventional logic to that. Whether up 7-3 or 8-3, it takes a TD to beat you. Was the one point worth the risk? Pederson knew the Vikings were a stingy defense and just felt any chance to add points had to be taken. I also think he was trying to keep his players confident.

Late in the half the Eagles faced 4th/2 from the MIN 44-yard line. I thought Pederson should punt. That would pin the Vikings deep and there wasn’t much chance they would mount a long TD drive with 1:15 on the clock. Pederson had Wentz try to draw them offside. When that didn’t work, he called a timeout. He then sent Wentz and the offense back on the field. He wanted the first down. He wanted more points. He also wanted to hammer home the message to the players that “I believe in you.”

Think about how often coaches punt. We saw Chip Kelly punt from inside the 40 a few times. Unless it is 4th/long, that always seemed a bit crazy. Coaches obsess on field position and conventional wisdom. Listen, there is no question that pinning a team deep does lessen their chance to score, but you aren’t exactly building up the confidence in your offense. You don’t want to be reckless, but you also don’t want to be scared of taking chances.

Pederson has shown that he wants to be aggressive. I don’t agree with all of his decisions, but that’s probably because I’ve studied coaches who went the conventional wisdom route for years and years. I do not think he’s been reckless at all.

This is somewhat of an unusual team. You have a rookie QB and a lot of young talent, but also key veterans like Jason Peters, Brent Celek, Connor Barwin and Allen Barbre. Those guys want to win now. This isn’t all about building for the future. This is about winning as much as you can in 2016. Pederson has to send the right message to both groups of players. He’s developing the young guys and trying to keep the veterans positive and focused. That’s not always easy, but Pederson has really pushed all the right buttons so far this year.

Now he has the Ryan Mathews situation to deal with. Outsiders would bench, maybe cut the guy. Pederson, being a former player, has tried to show his guys that he believes in them by letting them work through mistakes. He could have easily benched Vaitai last week, but didn’t. He’s been patient with the WRs. It will be interesting to see what he does with Mathews. Maybe he sticks with him until late in the game. Or maybe he does cut back on using him. One late game fumble can be forgiven. Two is a different story. That can be forgiven as well, but not as easily and it might not happen. A lot of things go into an interception. Fumbles are usually all on the person with the ball.

Part of the equation is what the locker room thinks of Mathews. Do his teammates love him? Is he a key guy? Is he a loner? Not all situations are the same. You are going to be more patient with someone who is a key part of the team and a key part of the locker room. I don’t know if Mathews is that guy?

Personally, I’d like to get Wendell Smallwood more touches. He shows better vision and better burst than Mathews right now. Let’s see what the young guy can do.

Pederson may not address the situation publicly, but we’ll see in his actions in the next few weeks what his decision with Mathews is. This is another challenge for Pederson, but so far he’s been outstanding with handling everything that has come his way. He’s certainly earned my confidence with his decision-making.

Arguably the best thing you can say about a coach is that he makes his team better through his leadership and his game management. So far Pederson has been outstanding on both fronts. He deserves an A+ for his work to this point.

The Lane Johnson situation will also be interesting to watch. He’s our best OL, but he already has two strikes. Strike 3 and he’s pretty much out of the league. Do we keep the plan of playing him at LT for the next 5 years?

  3. 3 Anders said at 9:11 AM on October 24th, 2016:

No choice but keep going. Peters is old and injury prone.

Odds are we cant draft a better LT than Johnson, so unless a guy drops, draft a guard/center, LB or CB with the Vikings pick

  4. 4 scratcherk said at 9:14 AM on October 24th, 2016:

I think his contract protects the Eagles from that but if he’s not ultra conservative with supplements at this point, he’s a dummy. Eagles still need to draft OL in the draft, at the minimum to challenge Big V, and possibly to take over for Lane if need be.

On another note, we’re done with 20% of lane’s suspension now, woot!

  5. 5 bdbd20 said at 9:24 AM on October 24th, 2016:

With LT’s and QB’s, I don’t think the money really comes into play. Either you have good ones or you don’t. If you do, they’re gonna cost a lot.

Matt Tobin has looked really good when he’s played. Not sure why LT is so more natural to him than RG.

  6. 6 Anders said at 9:27 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Same reason why its more natural to write with your right over your left (assuming you are right handed)

  7. 7 bdbd20 said at 9:29 AM on October 24th, 2016:

True. Which begs the question as to why the coaches tried him on the right side to begin with.

  8. 8 Anders said at 9:36 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Some guys can handle it with zero problems, but they are usually freaks of nature.

Zack Martin played LT at ND and now is a pro bowl RG.

Shawn Andrews was a star LT at Arkansas and was the best RG in the NFL before he got hurt

Lane Johnson played RT, then LT in college and now plays RT and everybody expect him to play LT 1-2 years.

  9. 9 Call Me Carlos the Dwarf said at 11:57 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Chip Kelly also thought that the Steelers’ starting LT should be a DE.

Don’t ask why, just try to forget.

100 pounds and a year later hes a LT. Not sure id put that one Chip.

  11. 11 Call Me Carlos the Dwarf said at 9:12 PM on October 24th, 2016:

He was only ever a starter as an OT and TE in college, and his best season came at LT.

    It’s entirely on Chip.

  12. 12 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 2:12 AM on October 25th, 2016:

I blame Chip for a lot of things… but that one doesnt. Maybe MSII is really a OT too

  13. 13 Call Me Carlos the Dwarf said at 10:34 AM on October 25th, 2016:

Did MSII spend his entire college career as an offensive blocker, haha?

Villanueva was a raw OT prospect coming out of college. He’s turned into a decent OT in the NFL.

The only people who ever thought he was a defensive end were his HS coaches and Chip Kelly.

The only things I really don’t understand from Pederson so far is (1) the lack of TEs in the gameplan against Detroit and (2) why not give Vaitai help at the START of the redskins game to build his confidence and let him get into a flow? That first series rattled both Vaitai and Wentz.

No, I said HELP. 😛 For some reason my recollection on that was that Vaitai gave up that sack. Thanks for the correction.

I know Wentz held onto that for too long, but should a TE be solo pass blocking against their best edge rusher?

  17. 17 bdbd20 said at 9:52 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Yeah, playcalling in that game was awful. Maybe it’s just one of those games where Doug over-thought things. Conservative approach would probably have been best there. Runs, screens, short stuff to boost the OL confidence.

  18. 18 D3FB said at 7:34 AM on October 25th, 2016:

A normal TE no, Celek in spurts is fine. The play is designed for Celek to do just what he did but for Carson to step up. Unfortunately Barbre is doing god knows what and just kind of drifts back into the space where Carson is supposed to step up into.

I really like what I’ve seen from Pederson so far. He seems to bring many of Andy’s strengths (even keel, ability to connect with players, good game planning, excellent play design) without some of Andy’s key weaknesses (he’s shown the ability to make in-game adjustments, he doesn’t abandon the running game too fast, and he’s been good with time management). And he’s clearly not afraid to be aggressive and seems to know when to take chances and when to play it safe. The team has too many personnel flaws to be a real contender this year but my confidence that we have the right QB/coach combination for long-term success is growing by the week.

  45. 45 Iskar36 said at 11:11 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Yes and no. The first 4 games will certainly boost his chances, but coach of the year winners are more often guys who out coach expectations. Great coaches, once they have established themselves as great, often get less credit when it comes to coach of the year awards. Doug Pederson right now perfectly fits the mold of a coach who wins the award normally, even if he isnt necessarily “the best” coach this season. No question he is the one who has best outperformed expectations.

  46. 46 Dave said at 6:56 PM on October 24th, 2016:

Nelson Agholor and Wentz just are not on the same page. I’m not sure why Wentz I’d forcing the ball to him at this point. I also wonder who we can deactivate go get Treggs on the field. I don’t view him as some sort of Savior, but getting a guy who can blow the top of the defense and not stop running his route will help open things up underneath.

And on the topic of the post, I’m a big fan of what Pederson is doing this year.

  50. 50 Stephen E. said at 11:18 AM on October 24th, 2016:

Agholor is a mess and has turned into a liability on the field. Ags played 74% of the snaps, had 6 targets that equated to 2 catches for 10 yards. I’m finding it harder and harder to believe that Paul Turner or Bryce Treggs would be this ineffective if called upon.

NFC seems wide open this year. Cards, Seahawks and Panthers have problems. I love to see that, unless of course it’s someone like the Cowboys that fills the void.

We seem to match up well with poor OL, so maybe we can kick around the Seahawks too. We owe them.

  60. 60 MattE said at 11:40 AM on October 24th, 2016:

NFC North: Vikes/Lions/Packers seem to be legit contenders (all with their own problems though), I am guessing one of the Wild Cards comes out of the North.

NFC South: Falcons seem to be only legit team, Carolina looks toast to me this season (their not same team). Saints/Bucs: doubt they grab a Wild-Card.

NFC West: Seattle/Arizona I think are only legit teams, I feel the West most resembles the East in the sense that Division games are often toss-ups so if Seattle and Arizona stay even-ish we could be looking at a Wild Card out of the West…….and the tie last night between SEA/ARI will make stretch interesting.

NFC East: Philadelphia/Dallas I think are legit Division contenders.

Conclusion: I believe Wild Cards come out of East & North personally…. so if we can get a game over .500 (9-7) I think we have a very good chance at playoffs, because I don’t see a World-Beater in the North/West.

Rule change idea: We actually kicked the extra point and also got a personal foul call. Why should the one point come off the board? Put the ball on the two yard line and go for one additional point (a total of two). If not successful you still keep the one point you kicked. Just a thought.

I was expecting less than 9 wins, maybe a lot less, so this is all gravy for me.

  78. 78 DJH said at 12:53 PM on October 24th, 2016:

Was listening to Geoff Mosher post game on the drive home. He had apparently picked the Eagles to win based on the matchup between our DL and Vikes offense. Essentially he felt we could get to the immobile Bradford through the poor OL. And our LBs and DBs could handle the Vikes skill position players.

He contrasted this with Washington offense. Better, bigger OL, more mobile QB, and better skill position players.

In other words, don’t expect our D to repeat yesterday’s performance against Dallas. At the same time, we’ve got to be better than we were against Washington.

I’m curious what the strategy will be but stopping the run may be the priority. I think Hicks has said the D is predicated on that, so I’m not providing deep insight here. Force Dak/Dallas to beat us with his arm. And he might. But that’s our best chance. Can’t get gashed in the run game.

  79. 79 ChoTime said at 12:59 PM on October 24th, 2016:

I also thought that their bad o-line plus Sammy coming down to earth boded well for our chances.

The D is the strength of this team. The front line is talented, but not so much that it can be relied upon to win games against good teams IMO.

I think the O is going to have to step up to win our games against DAL and WAS. I’m not sure they’re up to it. It seems to me our best bet is a conservative game plan and hope DAL’s D doesn’t tackle.

The divisional games look to be toss-ups to me. If Wentz starts playing more like he did in the first few games, I’d give us the advantage.

  80. 80 DJH said at 1:04 PM on October 24th, 2016:

Yes, if the offense can score that will put additional pressure on Dallas to throw the ball more. They’re not going to completely abandon the run game (their bread and butter) but if they’re playing with a lead, they can run, run, run.

Yep, to beat Dallas our O and D will need to play complementary football for sure. The D won’t dominate like they did yesterday.

I think our DL vs their OL was the key, they also don’t have skill position guys you’d want on your fantasy team (guess you could argue we don’t either).

Think key to the game was Wentz is mobile, bradford isn’t. If you sack Tom Brady 6 times w/ 19 hits Pats probably losing that game.

  82. 82 xeynon said at 6:22 PM on October 24th, 2016:

I think we concentrate on taking away the running game and the short stuff and make Dak beat us deep. He hasn’t shown the ability to do that yet this season.

I think we could win this game even if our defense struggles, though, because Dallas’ defense is significantly less imposing than Minnesota’s. A shootout victory is possible.

  83. 83 The original AG said at 9:30 PM on October 24th, 2016:

Yet they beat a much better offense in Pittsburgh. I’m not a big fan of Mosher generally and if he looks at the Washington game as a litmus I think he’s making a mistake. The tape on that game showed a lot of execution problems. Bad angles, bad technique, and a ton of penalties. When this team plays penalty free, they are a tough team to beat. Every team has a couple bad games a year, and Washington definitely fits in to that group.

I think they beat Washington when they come back to Philly.

  84. 84 DJH said at 1:06 PM on October 24th, 2016:

What does the college tape tell us about how Dak handles getting hit? Does he get flustered, does he look to run?

He hasn’t been pressured all season long. If we can somehow stop the run, get a lead, maybe we can hit him a few times and find out.

  85. 85 Tumtum said at 1:40 PM on October 24th, 2016:

Super nervous about this one. Our Dline could struggle again. Not sure the pressure is a given, even if you want to apply it.

  86. 86 DJH said at 2:41 PM on October 24th, 2016:

If we can’t stop the run, we won’t force them into many 3rd and long situations. So we might not get many chances to get pressure or even blitz. If we can’t stop the run, then we are toast.

We have to force them into throwing to even have a chance to get pressure and/or blitz.

If Dak has time to throw or play action working due to run game, our LBs and DBs will struggle to hang with their skill position players.

  87. 87 anon said at 2:49 PM on October 24th, 2016:

    And weirdly:
“Player Comparison: Donovan McNabb. Prescott has seen a lot of comparison made to Tim Tebow because they both played in Dan Mullen’s offense. Some have compared him to Russell Wilson, but in my opinion, McNabb is the most similar. Both are quarterbacks with strong arms, mobility, shorter-thick frames, and needing work as pocket passers entering the NFL.

Committing to stopping the run is a big reason why Prescott has faced very little pressure. Dallas has shown that they will run whether leading or not, and most defenses cannot stop them on the ground without leaving gaping holes in the flat and beyond. He not only gets time, but he gets open receivers most of the times he drops back. We know that OL, so our best chance is vigilant edge-sealing and LB penetration. I don’t like our chances if Logan is not playing.
