Halftime – NYG 21, PHI 10
Posted: November 6th, 2016 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 466 Comments »Ugh.
2 costly INTs by Carson Wentz. Blown coverages. Bad 4th down calls. A blocked FG. You would think the Eagles were getting destroyed. The Eagles have been throwing the ball down the field and that has led to some big plays. They already have 248 yards at halftime.
If the Eagles can just cut out the mistakes, they will win this game. I realize that is easier said than done.
The Eagles do get the ball to open the 2nd half and they have dominated the 3rd quarter this year. They need a strong showing to get this game tighter or even to take the lead and put some pressure on the Giants.
_
Bring Treggs back in.
And give Smallwood some more touches before crunch time
Ok. Be right back.
I have a plan. Score f**ing points!!
And Chip Kelly can kiss my *ss.
We just need to find a way to end this game with more points than the opponent.
So Doug is temporary right until a good coach becomes available?
He’s here to develop Wentz and he’s doing a great job, despite today. Give him 4 years minimum. Lets see how the team looks then.
Riverboat Doug doesn’t sound as good
Eagles want to win? Lock Kotit… i mean Pederson in the bathroom and have someone else call the plays.
Good thing Ertz got hurt. Needs to watch Trey and what to do with ball after catch.
we cant afford to lose any playmakers, even if they are average.
is ertz a playmaker?
Not what I meant – poorly expressed on my part.
Nasty cut by Burton there
wow the stretch play actually worked…
lets not get carried away with the stretch play
Who was that?
ags coming to play?
TDDDDDD
yes yes yesy eys
THIRD QUARTER IS OUR BITCHHHHHH
Aghs??
sorry media mike.
not that hard mathews on the goal line.
barner.
gross. whatever, much needed td.
Bless you Barner, I would sacrifice Media Mike for that TD.
Feels like we should be down 40, not 4
I disagree. Feels like we should be up 10
Scientists call that the Pederson effect.
OK. Time for Manning face.
May the Schwartz be with us.
Hopefullu Watkins steps it up this half. Obscure but required for a win a think.
I honestly think that Huff and Watkins were best buds. At least that’s what I’m telling myself..
impressive drive
Everyone making plays
We need to get 3 Tds this qtr before we start to blow
honey beau beau in coverage….
Saw that too
No points here D
thought that was an INT
Even if we give up a fg this drive, we are still within a score
how are these people so wide open
shoulder charge apparently works
they have actual WRs
nice coverage
Cant even hold properly
Terrible Jenkins
Another quiet week for Cox.
who?
The guy who takes terrible drive extending penalties.
Cox is slow this season all that new money weighing him down. Also it makes me so jealous to see the weapons the cowgirls, the vagiants, and the foreskins have. We are so close in these games and we have nothing it would be crazy to see what life would be like with some talent. Shepard is better than Matthews and he’s their #3
this hillary commercial is terrible
Rabble rabble, political stuff, rabble rabble.
nice blocking
you gotta be kidding me
You can almost see the lack of Huff and its effect. Offense seems to be missing its X-weapon. Even if Huff was never that great, he was dangerous given a bit of space.
That thought literally has not crossed my mind once watching this game. The complete lack of running game and poor play calling are the main issues
So we were throwing the ball downfield successfully, and now we throw a short screen and run the ball?
nice 3 and out
How is that not PI?
good coverage as in fucking PI
Think im tapping out on this one. Its nap time
not a bad idea, took a red eye cross country last night. sigh.
*sigh*…
Basically, Wentz really is mostly a Jason Campbell with some Derek Carr in him. Enough to credibly start, but not really likely to star.
Yes. I’m a little pissed by the quality of that deep pass.
Uhh he’s a rookie….
i would say this is his first bad game all year. and even then, its not that bad
Let’s go defense. We need a lift here.
Well, looks like after 3 games teams figured Doug out, since we’re about to go 1 and 4 after that with the one being much more about the vikings shitting the bed.
Yeah man… down by 4 because wentz made 2 rookie mistakes. Doug must go!!!!!!!!!
Unprepared to play, poor discipline and bad play calling are all hallmarks of a poorly coached football team.
What do we have 2, 3 penatlies? Ya reaching bruh.
Third most penalties per game this season actually. Not even reaching for a t-rex….
Yeab after two really bad games the last 2 have been big improvements. Damn, inprovement from a rookie coach. How about that. Look im all for being critical. Still belive in the guy.
Except his play calling is getting worse.
Oh stupid, stupid, stupid.
odb got popped
At least 1 Eagle has some balls
stupid
Ahh the eagles suck chant
by our fans
only in new york could such a classy and sophistocated chant arise
That is the 2nd time the Giants have come in late and nothing called on them. BS
Can’t lose your cool like that.
did dougie challenge… stupid
Wow upstairs gave Doug some shit advice there.
well maybe….
WTF is he challenging
Hes a idiot
Gonna need that timeout
Unfortunately, I dont think so
i think this would have gone with the call on the field etiher way, not enough to overturn
Andy Reid’s worst traits are coming out in DP today.
Since the bye
which is ironic.
Poorly coached football team.
Not only the poor clock management and stupid challenge. Smallwood has looked great running the ball all 1 or 2 times he was given the rock. Where is he?
Where is Treggs?
mills in there.
imagine that. hicks in on the action and they break up the pass.
fuck you ref
isn’t that a penalty?
he should get a flag for being a dumbass
That’s a penalty
These refs man. Losing years on my life.
This play calling is hard to watch
Sick of seeing sproles lead the back field
At least he waited to go down easily
This makes me feel meh
Doug would be the guy to pass up Fournette for De’Athony Thomas.
Howie wouldn’t
how did he get tackled there.
Ertz what the hell man, you get touched and jump to the ground?
He is such a puss
Where the f is Celek?
DGB has to find some speed in the off season. Seems a little slow to play wr in the nfl.
Long strider. Needs off coverage or a quick release to get off of the line.
I dont know, for a guy so highly rated in college, I expected more speed.
I do too, that’s what is so baffling about him.
that was some pretty flagrant self tackling there.
DGB’s route running is difficult to watch
What route running?
It’s like watching Bambi on ice
When does his mom get shot? I can’t watch
It is poor. Was thinking the same on that replay and then The next route
If you don’t think of it as route running and more of just kinda sorta trying to get open, your head will hurt less.
He could do ballet to get open and I wouldn’t give a damn.
i guess if he’s the most reliable player out there, just keep feeding him.
Jeez Doug he’s tired. I’m tired watching him
Ertz saving time by being tackled as he catches it
So… why didn’t Chip use Sproles more last year!?
because Chip Kelly.
minny down 4 to Det
missed xp, blocked fg
big balls doug
All those 4th down attempts have already shown that Doug has cajones grande
And brain pequeno
Self tackle
Down 11, dinking and dunking again, and still just running only Sproles. Deja vu?
You preferred the salvo of long incompletions?
just a little bit.
Self-tackling Jeremy Maclin, er, Ertz.
self tackle and still hurt the DB
would like to see qb sneak for those short situations ala brady
that would involve Kelce getting push though
Not behind our center.
Play calling
attrocious
Who’s holding their breath on these rollouts and his “fling” delivery?
OMG Ertz. wtf?
Not his fault that time. Wentz shoulda made a better throw.
yeah that was just a high pass
tough when it went through a Giants DL’s arms though
sigh
lol. love those shorts power sturge is wearing
Iffy playcalling has been the story since the bye week.
think that’s partly down to Lane being out?
Or the league seeing enough of pederson.
For sure, but you saw the protection Wentz had there. Could’ve easily had the ability to throw the ball downfield. Granted, that’s probably what he wanted to do but no one’s getting open either.
Giving Lame too much credit
No, not really. Good OL play and suddenly our execution will look a lot better plus it opens up more of the play book.
Jesus. I could call a defensive game against Pederson. 1st down- 1 yard pass. 2nd down- run up the middle. 3rd down- pass 3-5 yards short of the sticks.
Kansas City called. Their head coach wants his play calling back.
Deja vu with old Andy Reid teams. pass on first, run on second. pass on 3rd and long.
at least those teams were good at screen passes though.
Until they weren’t.
how did he get thru
Shit. Defense is starting to look tired.
Horrible defending today
horrible since the bye
YHES YES YES
come on… give us a break
I dont think so
Call stands
Oh man, I hope that stands, but I’m not holding my breath.
thats ours baby!
Flashback to Brandon Boykin’s play against Victor Cruz in 2013.
ball never touched the ground (that you can see) so you cant overturn that.
Defense probably has to do something.
Whoa! I asked and I received!
Just got back from being on the road home from a wedding. I’ve been following the game on Twitter…sounds like we haven’t been fantastic today.
alls well that ends well
Travis Kelce just got ejected for throwing his towel like a penalty flag to mock a ref. Lol
That’s one heck of an INT.
…until the refs screw us out of it
Vikings on the 2 about to steal a game
game stolen
HA HA HA HA!!!!!!
loved McAdoo mouthing “FUCK YOU” during the announcement
Give Carroll a lot of credit. Great clutch play.
needs more air
Needed more air and more distance I think.
Treggs has had to slow down twice already. I don’t know if it’s chemistry or that his deep ball is really hit or miss.
Guessing it’s a chemistry thing. I think once they get some more game time together, Wentz will know to let it rip. Looks like Treggs can get down the field pretty fast.
Gosh damn Carson. Throw the damn ball deep!
You can keep your job Nolan
big third down here.
Dammit. Feed Smallwood.
This playcalling…..
go for it.
sigh.
awful playcalling
Ertz completely whiffs his block
Um. There were 4 Giants defenders and 1 Ertz. What’s your point?
that blocking one might’ve at least held them up a little? especially as Wentz got the other side of him.
Throw the ball doug. Hell we will probably get a fake stopped here
I want Pederson’s playcalling duties taken the fuck away from him.
God, what impatient playcalling.
Terribke
F U Pederson. Lousy play calling.
Man when Pederson has something in a game plan, he refuses to give up on it. The screen plays against Dallas, and the zone read now.
Just like Andy Reid.
ERTZ sux a big one
Why the fuck do we keep running that!?
Catch the other team by surprise.
How’s that working for you?
Brilliantly. There’s always happily surprised we keep doing the same thing.
Even though they have read it all game long. That’s whst happens when the coach is an idiot.
safety and a touchdown gets us a win. Let’s do this.
And another awful play call by pederson. Giants have read that all day. God Pederson sucks.
Pederson makes Chip Kelly look like Bellichik
I’m pretty disappointed Joe Buck is calling football games again.
how does he always get away
Graham was held.
Vikings – Lions going into OT. Go Lions!!
Crazy ending. Had to hurry up and spike for a 57 yarder. Prater nailed it
Doug probably would have punted
Wow, we’re lucky he didn’t run it. Whew
OK. Touchdown this drive please.
Drrraaam almost had im
This team’s getting a lot of mamulas.
We should do the read option and have Wentz keep it more. I bet it fool them
I’m thinking 1 yard pass, run up the middle, then a pass 5 yards short of the first down. Then on 4th we’ll go for it and run the magical read option Wentz keeper.
I’m 2 for 2 so far….
Wentz run plays bums me out more than dropped passes .. not , but damn close
Doug. I’m begging you. Get Celek involved in the pass game this drive. Please !!!!!
I like that the Eagles traded for DGB.
I like that they’re playing him.
But the more I see of DGB, the more I’m reminded of former Houston Rockets center Ralph Sampson.
Sampson played like he thought of himself as a point guard — despite being 7’3″.
DGB plays like he thinks of himself as Bryce Treggs.
Treggs is our big play guy…. sigh.
fucking brilliant!
Think is Sproles is on the field the Giants are watching him closely?
The shocking 2 &10 handoff
hmm this playcalling seems familiar
pass on first. run on second. pass on 3rd and long. again and again and again and again.
ags with the drop
and que the drop
Right on cue.
what another drop you don’t say?
Wtf
Seriusly? Ok this is dumb
How fitting
That was a bad throw, but you have to bail out your QB sometimes.
omg
I don’t understand Doug
Maybe he’s a numbers guy.
Still dumb. Lucky, but dumb.
brilliant doug
So stupid. I’ll take it
WOW
Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.
any day
hilarious
Wow, can’t believe how open he was.
Ags tries so hard to get cut
That would have been so Eagles.
Can we cut Nelson Agholor like now
at least agholor caught it
only worse than dropping it… fumbling it.
Get him off the field
get rid of aghalor. You’ve got to get him off the damn field.
Why is he even on the field?
i hate the wr screen
Has it ever worked for us?
at least the playcalling isn’t predictable
Wentz checked into that. Good try given the way they were crowding the line, but…
Gotta move. Need to kick on 4th
Someone needs to sprinkle some crack in Ags next piss test. Dude flat out sucks.
had him.
Had him. Poor throw
if they insist on running all these screens, theyve gotta fucking figure out how to run them
Dez would’ve made that catch
ffs
Why does it always look like the other team wants it more than us?
nice throw
oh yeah, now we take the points.
the demoralizing 4 minute drive coming up here.
All those missed opportunities…..
On that JMatt screen, you could see him double catch it. Slowed him down. Just unacceptable to do that when you need to get north south quickly.
the way our short yardage and RZ has been today, this seems like the more likely route to success honestly.
on Redzone, right after that missed throw by Went they cut to Fitzpatrick firing a laser on point in the same spot for a td
If pederson wasn’t an idiot, the Eagles would be up by at least 1.
The Giants are begging us to win this game.
Outstanding coverage!!!
of course.
Next year: Draft a new Center, RG, LG, and Tackle. Don’t let Lane Johnson eat anything but bananas, spinach, and chicken until he retires.
Dude, we also kinda need corners and receivers.
And a coach…..
Or at least a new play caller.
Can wait another year if necessary. Need to develop a young, powerful OL. We have the QB. Need to protect that QB. Then get the skill players.
everyone knows the yare running
Everyone knows they’re going to run it. Why does it still catch us by surprise?
Cool, Eagles-like bonehead move there.
Can’t get Logan back soon enough.
whyyyyy are we not using a time out
the clock management in this game is seriously fucked
Use a timeout sheesh
Far too many Andy Reid deja vu moments.
Ditto including the nonchalant pace on offense down 8. Shaky play calling today with suspect time clock management.
Exactly. Everything except the 4th down calls. Reid would’ve taken the points.
Lions win
2 missed tackles
Thanks Matt Stafford.
Wow, this a damn long Trump commercial.
Maybe if he loses, we should hire him to “Make the Eagles Great Again.”
We’ve given up 27, 29, and at least 28 points in our 3 games against our NFC East foes. With our offense that simply won’t cut it. Cheers to a better finish. But W or L, I think it’s time we realize our defense is vastly overrated.
Jinx!
jhsdl;ha’ls
YES YES FRAKING YES
All Jordan Hicks does is make plays.
FUCK YEAHHHHH!!
yeah bitch
MANNING FACE!!!!!
Eli Face
Hicks!!!!
MANNING FACE!!!
Barwin with the assist
DO. NOT. FUCKING. FUMBLE
Simba, the Giant and Cowboy slayer.
vintage Eli face!
So, Manningface…
should hicks play WR?
maybe he can give some lessons
Run the clock
HICKS! Gaddamn
It’s not good spacing Aikman because Agholor was fucking held.
Aghs???
run the damn clock
Giants have given us so many damn chances. Time to capitalize.
run the fucking ball! run it! why do you insist on giving them time to comeback?
Clock should have run after the decline
ags!!!
Wentz’s accuracy has been lousy. Lofting way too many throws
I think he was throwing that one away.
agholor throw
They were both to Agholor but I”m assuming you meant the first one.
can’t fucking run the ball now. great clock management again.
You know Spags is going to send people. He’s JJ’s disciple. Rookie QB, in the red zone. Quick slant hitters. lets go.
3 straight passes. Doug plz
gonna be 4 now
laughable
blow to the head?
lol another screen.
wtf!!!!
SHould have been a penalty.
Yeah, Wentz isn’t ready for this apparently. Should’ve had a roughing call but….
Oh he is young…so the rulea dont apply…nice
Ikr wtf
Another fucking screen call
need to pick up the blitz
Gotta go to Ertz here
Burton.
i know! read option!
I’m thinking 1 yard swing pass…
The blitz is coming. Don’t fricking kid yourselves. Better run some routes designed to get open quick for 10 yards.
Blew their last timeout there? Ugh
Why not?
lol
this loss stings.
Not a bad call. Not well executed.
but we only lost by less than a td
Wentz heard footsteps, bad throw
Played and looked like a rookie all day today. First game all year I thought wentz has played poorly.
Oh, fuck that coach…
that was a hellavu job coaching today
man we are in all these games. just not clutch
Why did Matthews turn in and not to his right shoulder???
because all he did was catch screens in college and then had a coach that had to scheme him open. so chances are he doesn’t know what to do on a back shoulder throw.
I wonder, should Matthews have looked over his outside shoulder given the inside leverage?
throw was awful and almost behind redemption if that was a planned back shoulder throw.
not a flip-the-hips, typical back shoulder, but more just like a flag
Sometimes routes are adjusted based on the coverage… No way to know whether Wentz threw it outside because he was expecting Mathews to see it that way or whether it was just an awful throw.
either way not on the same page
I would guess if it was a route that could be adjusted that it was Mathews who was at fault, because he had the defender on his inside and nothing but green grass to the outside.
I don’t think it was the route, Matthews didn’t get any separation but Wentz has been throwing ducks all game to his WRs near the RZ today.
Mathews was open, if he looked over his other shoulder that’s an easy catch. That makes me wonder what the two were thinking and whether Carson thought Mathews would be looking over the other shoulder as well.
I’d need the All 22 for this but Matthews wasn’t open. The CB was right next to him and the way Matthews was looking for the ball would suggest he was looking for a fade. Regardless of what route he ran, the throw was nowhere near Matthews. Just like how it was nowhere near DGB on all of those RZ attempts.
Seemed just a bit rushed on the throw- a split second more air time and we have a TD and the community is happy
Make them walk home
The coaches or the players?
All of them
Lurie too
I understand missing calls, but calling blantantly no calling is pretty rigged.
Sucks for the D to play their asses off only to have the offense completely shit the bed. Doug better get roasted about the offense after this. The goddamn steeler win, viking win, don’t mean a damn thing if you can’t win a fucking division game.
2nd game in a row pederson’s terrible coaching has cost us. Just brutal.
Agree more this week including how this team was yet again playing in a mental fog in the 1st qtr. become a bad trend
Yea uhh gotta fix Wentz’s hit or miss accuracy Doug.
I’m really tired of seeing this kind of game.
QB not good enough, OL not good enough, WR not good enough… oh well.
Coach not good enough.
Wentz will be fine. He is a rookie where bad running game and lack of weapons are hurting him.
poor accuracy hurting him too
I agree, but I think a top-notch QB wins this game. But he’s doing very good for a rookie.
4-4 last in the division.
And deservedly so.
So tired of Doug. Just lacks any critical thinking skills. Glad the players like him, but he’s a moron.
I would be fine with doug being fired at the end of the season. I’ve seen enough.
That’s 2 in a row square on dug. Gotta kick FGs when the game dictates
Can I get an amen?
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n5MgPDFO85c/UD9Vc8CBhKI/AAAAAAAAGYY/z6bi5UOS_H0/s1600/jesus_facepalm.jpeg
First game all year I am pretty disgusted. They got beat by a very mediocre team that gave them chance after chance.
Season is over too with their schedule coming up too. Won’t go 6-2 down the stretch nor win each of their remaining NFC east games.
I hope Doug has learned his lesson and just take the 3 points when he can get them. Two weeks in a row where the outcome might have been different if we just kicked the damn FG.
Clearly not. Doug is a moron. I half expected him to kick a field goal on the last 4th down. Its like being coached by the shittier version of andy reid. All the crappy stuff but none of the positives.
I think I’m going to convert to alcoholism. Not sure I can withstand this team otherwise.
I drank enough Jameson to bathe in at a wedding yesterday….looks like o should have kept going.
This team so desperately needs an elite playmaker. I’m usually a “draft linemen, QBs, and defenders first” guy but Wentz’s talents will always be hobbled as long as he’s working with this caliber of WR and RB. Can you believe as recently as 2013 this team had elite young players at RB and both WR slots? Now, slop. Thanks, Chip.
need ol, wrs and running backs useless w/out oline
Yeah, we need OL too. But Johnson should be back and after a rough start Vaitai has started to look like a guy who could start at RT. Hopefully Seumalo develops.
Won’t matter with the crap coach the eagles currently have.
For the umpteenth time – it’s not the coaching. The talent on this offense is bad. Pederson actually has them producing at a level above their talent, but in high leverage situations, they have nobody who can be counted on to beat good defense and make a play himself. Can’t win like that.
coaching not putting players in a position to make plays
When you have crappy players, you lose when a decent defense defends you correctly. You can’t outscheme the defense every time – you need guys who have physical ability and can beat defenders even when they’re doing a good job. We have nobody like that, the Cowboys (to name one team) have THREE of those guys.
Shitty playcalling is shitty playcalling. And Doug’s playcalling has been indefensible.
I disagree. I think his playcalling has been fine. Receivers being unable to beat one-on-one coverage (to name but one talent-related issue) is not the fault of the play caller.
1 yard pass on 1st down, run up the middle on 2nd down, throw 5 yards short of the sticks on third down, punt or fail a 4th down conversion with a read option qb run. Rinse and repeat.
You need to watch the all-22 to determine whether those are playcalling issues. A lot of short passes are designed to go downfield but are checked down because everybody’a covered. And if nobody can get open deep it constrains your playcalling options because defenses can defend what you can do more aggressively (and we are running into that issue, big time – teams are sitting on our short passing game because we can’t make them pay by going deep against single coverage).
Unprepared to play, poor discipline, terrible playcalling. All hallmarks of a poorly coached football team. He’s cost the team 2 winnable games in a row.
It feels like we have been playing ourselves and the other team. You can’t overcome too many obstacles and win games. Between turnovers, lack of concentration, bad tackling, other circumstances (officiating), and shit playcalling, there’s no way we win a game.
This hurts:
https://twitter.com/JeffSkversky/status/795376660803686401
Yeah, we all were too quick to claim he was the answer. Need more data and better wr play, and better coaching, and better blocking and better rb play.
hasn’t lead any sort of clutch drive situation – not even close. Def. did a ton to give him this game including 2 key takeaways
That was a good ball to Matthews.. he just needs to turn the other way and we win.
I do wonder how different that would look with a OBJ/Dez Bryant type player to throw to.
He really came out fast out of the chute, and we’re all so desperate. Still, theer’s only so much you can ask from a rookie. Tom Brady was successful early on, but it was a very controlled offense.
Gotta think a bunch of that is on play calling and situational awareness. He’s a rookie, 8 games into his NFL career.
Back up and view this with some long term perspective
Vikings lost today…. Thats good news. Also Wentz had a 300 yard game and finally: TREGGS!
I’ll take it. You have to take every small little thing when you’re an Eagles fan.
But we are one of the better 2nd tier teams
Post game – ‘Eagles did everything they could to lose this game.’
Apt and poignant summary of this game.
I understand the disappointment but ain’t no way you recover from such a terrible half and those 2 turnovers. Doug play calling was definitely a consequence of that horrendous 1st quarter. With that said, we need a WR badly.
2 turnovers in the 4th when you’re down 8
Exciting game .. bad football by both .. we sucked better than them .. were we o for. .maybe 0-8 in red zone today … damn lame.. carson with no comebacks..
Pederson seemed to overcompensate all day including being too risky.
JJ said the exact same thing and that Pederson fell into a rookie head coach trap today.
Hopefully everyone involved can make it a learning experience and move on.
game after game after game
The 2 things that bothers me are the red zone play calling (it’s been awful for a long time now) and that obsession to call wentz run (he looks really slow).
I think the bigger issue with the red zone offense is lack of talent. We have not one guy who is a player you’d fear in the red zone if you’re a fan of the other team. Not one.
Isn’t that what DGB is supposed to be? 6-5in 235lbs and athletic should be good for a jump ball or two, you would think. No wonder the Titans sent him to us.
….for Dennis Kelly.
mr softee
He doesn’t play with an edge.
That’s what he’s supposed to be. He isn’t .
bad playcalling
Okay Bill Walsh. What play are YOU going to call that’s going to consistently score TDs when you have a middle-of-the-pack TE and NFL bottom 5 units at both WR and RB?
ck had a much better RZ % with same crappy personnel and a worse QB
Noticed that too and wentz looks slower in the pocket too. Wonder if the more hits he has been taking the last few weeks are starting to catch up a bit.
What are the chances that the vikings go 5-11 now?
Ah well, brothers, let us drink ourselves unconscious and wake up tomorrow pretending today never happened. Tomorrow we’re still 4-3.
Well we still run the 4-3 on defense!!!
With that said, and it’s really hard to say it after loosing two straight to rivals, if we look at it long term, those games give us some hope. Our roster is not trash, our QB is learning but still ballin’ (we can’t count on him to carry the team alone). The future is still bright. The present sucks though.
carry the team?
I’m am really interested to see how Pederson adjusts in the NFC East matchups to see what he learns
And I also want to mention that for once, we had good referees. Like the outcome or not, but it’s been a while I haven’t watch a football game with that kind of intensity, they let them play and it was good.
Ok I forgot about the hands to helmet non call, life sucks, sorry for that desperate optimism
Yes, I agree.
At the end of the day, our team didn’t quit. Defense came up big after being put in a very difficult situation. Wentz played much better after some antsy moments early. We lost, but we have a bright future with some average drafting and some good fortune
For the most part I agree but that missed call at the end weighs heavy
Feel like everyone needs to recognize that this is not a playoff team – it’s the 8-8 type squad we expected at the beginning of the year. Goals should be realistic – develop the rookie QB and perhaps inflict a damaging late season loss on one or two division rivals. Not win in January. Too much building still to do for that.
Yeah if you had told people before the season they were 4-4 with a QB who played pretty well most folks I bet would be satisfied right now.
The first few games really screwed up expectations. Just talking to my buddy about that.
Rookie coach…rookie QB, it was ALWAYS going to be rocky. 3 straight opponents coming off their bye week doesnt make things any easier. Would be nice to actually have a receiver who can adjust to the ball and make a damn play.
I noted this below, but it is worth expanding.
Chip Kelly drafted for “culture”- but those guys all play without an edge (Ertz, Marcus Smith, and Ags specifically). Easier to tackle, under performing draft picks that looked promising coming out of school but really haven’t panned out in the NFL.
Let’s look at the picks this year, specifically Mills and to a lesser extent Smallwood. Guys with questionable “character” coming out, but so far they look like they belong in the NFL.
Would Ertz still be here (with a massive contract extension to boot) if he wasn’t a 2nd round pick? Compare him with Burton. Who would you pick?
Final thought- does culture compute to a lack of toughness, perhaps that “it” factor so often discussed but seldom explained?
Imagine if it was the other way around. GIants get the INT and the Eagles proceeded to all out blitz 4 straight times. Would it be 1st or 2nd down before Beckham would have the game winning TD? WE need a player that can defy x’s and o’s. And i know, you all know this already.
I really could not care less about the score, but I find it alarming how consistently poor the play is. Pederson has to be very careful because the mistakes and miscues are all on him. If he’s asking the players to perform at a level beyond their ability, he’s got to hit reset and demand fundamentals performed correctly, routinely, repeatedly. He needs to impress upon his QB that his running is only allowed if he’s running for his life, and his eyes never seem to leave his intended target. Our OL is not up to the task of establishing a running game consistently. Our DL looks to be a tackle and an end away from being absolutely game-changing, but right now the pressure is not consistent. I would love to see DP tear out half of the WC plays that consistently scare no DC’s and go for no yards. I don’t know how adaptable he is at designing plays, but he and Wentz and the WR’s and all of us have to be sick of the low-percentage crossing patterns with defenders in the receivers’ pockets. If the WR catches the pass he is immediately tackled, sometimes for a loss, and if the pass is tipped…
I look at this season as a suitable amount of time to show progress, to demonstrate consistent, if limited success at executing fundamental football tasks. Rather than focus on the final score, go into the locker room and frankly deliver to the players a preliminary grade for the game just played, and then later refine that and their understanding of exactly what will be satisfactory and what will not be tolerated. Consistently missing blocks in the open field should gain an emphatic reaction, and I don’t mean negative. Consistently failing to play your gap, consistently failing to see and handle a blitz, consistently calling up unrealistic play options that undermine your players’ capabilities…these are all deflating to witness. Again, forget the score. Focus on football.
And that will do it for us making the playoffs this year…3-3 at best in division and I don’t see us getting beyond 8-8..
