Keepers

The Eagles have had a great STs unit for the past 4 years. Chip Kelly hired Dave Fipp to be the architect and the organization went out and collected a really good group of players for Fipp to coach. Three of the main cogs have been P Donnie Jones, LS Jon Dorenbos and Chris Maragos. The Eagles decided to reward all of them with new contracts.

Maragos is the youngest of the trio and he’s 29 years old. Seems weird for the Eagles to lock up older guys, even specialists. But I think this is smart. Sports science has changed things. Players who really take care of themselves can play a long time, especially if they are full-time starters who are on the field for 50 or more snaps a game.

Dorenbos, Jones and Maragos are all outstanding players and they are good off the field as well. The Eagles could try to save a few bucks by looking for young guys at these spots, but there is real value in having proven veterans who are good on the field and also provide some leadership.

Howie Roseman also made the point that by keeping these players around it helps the Eagles know what they need to get done in the offseason. That isn’t to imply that finding a new snapper would have conflicted with finding a WR, but by eliminating 3 unknowns, the Eagles won’t waste time looking for players to fill the positions. They can focus on other spots that are going to be open due to free agency or under-performance.

Roseman was asked about an extension for Bennie Logan, the team’s key free agent. Roseman wouldn’t get into specifics, but did make it sound like the Eagles have had some discussions. I’m sure they would love to keep Logan, another guy who is good on and off the field. The challenge is finding him money after paying the other guys on the DL. You would think that the team could strongly consider cutting Connor Barwin and then using that money to pay Logan.

We can worry about all that stuff in the offseason.

This is pretty cool.

3 of the executives picked Wentz. Marcus Mariota got the other 2 votes.

Also both were the players the Eagles were after.

How many of them would have picked Mariota prior to his GB game? That’s some front running shit right there.

  4. 4 Anders said at 7:57 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Mariota was already having a great year before that

  5. 5 xmbk said at 8:39 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Since joining the league, he has 30 red zone TD and zero INT, which is ridiculous. He was already on the radar, despite having roughly the same wr talent as the Eagles. Couple of bad turnovers this year doesn’t change that. They aren’t on tv much, but I catch their games. He passes the eye test. That is a team on the rise.

  6. 6 xmbk said at 8:49 AM on November 20th, 2016:

I think deep ball is the only advantage I would give Wentz over Mariota. Maybe line adjustments, but that’s hard to compare. Mariota is more accurate, quicker release, better runner. They are definitely the top 2 I would take if building a franchise, and 3rd place isn’t close (though Carr would come before Prescott).

  7. 7 Media Mike said at 7:43 AM on November 20th, 2016:

With how often these head case kickers miss kicks and try to blame everything but themselves; the ability to consistently snap the ball to the holder in a well-placed manner is vital.

    Tommy

I am really disappointed that you seem to be in the ‘cutting Barwin’ camp as well. Especially since your article was supporting that argument to keep guys who are also role models off the field as well.

Well, Barwin might be the biggest role model of them all. What he does for the city of Philadelphia is remarkable. And I am pretty positive that he’s also beloved by Lurie too.

I am very positive that Connor will be playing for the Eagles next season, and that Howie will find a way to make his current contract more cap friendly in order to keep Benny alongside Cox.

    Have at it……….
    http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/philadelphia-eagles/

Barwin’s production isn’t matching his cap number. If he’d like to come back on a reduced deal; I’l welcome him with open arms. I can’t hand out an $8.35 cap hit to Barwin if he’s on pace for a 6 sack season (6.4 if you’d like to be exact).

Although Vinny Curry’s lack of production this year isn’t going to be helpful if that continues next year when his cap hit also rises.

  10. 10 Dave said at 8:09 AM on November 20th, 2016:

I like Barwin and think he’ll still be around. I must say though, if he is cut, it is only a $600,000 cap hit. Leverage will be in Howie’s side if he tries to get him to reduce his salary.

  11. 11 GermanEagle said at 8:13 AM on November 20th, 2016:

When it comes down to ‘a player’s production vs matching a player’s cap number’ I am not sure if a player like Ertz or Curry wouldn’t justify a salary decrease as well?

My main point was that if a player is as highly regarded in the locker room and off the field as Barwin this fact cannot be simply overlooked or ignored.

Team chemistry seems to be important in Philly again, just ask Huff.

  12. 12 D3FB said at 8:18 AM on November 20th, 2016:

He can’t keep contain, his pass rush is inconsistent (and that’s being generous), I’m all for high character guys, but he’s worth maybe 3 mil a year. He’s not going to restructure for that kind of money.

  13. 13 GermanEagle said at 8:36 AM on November 20th, 2016:

    We shall see.

  14. 14 Media Mike said at 10:19 AM on November 20th, 2016:

That’s certainly a fair way to consider Barwin in context, but I think D3’s comments on Barwin’s play might wind up being more apt.

  15. 15 Anders said at 7:56 AM on November 20th, 2016:

The reason with Barwin is cost versus production versus younger guys already on the roster.

If you wanna pay Logan, the money has to come somewhere and Barwin is the most logic way

    Only 9 games under .500 over 11 seasons with QBs like . . .

Chris Chandler (7 NFL teams), Vince Young (5 seasons, 2 teams), Kerry Collins (6 teams), Sam Bradford (3 teams in 3 years), Austin Davis (2 teams in 2 years), Shaun Hill (5 teams), Case Keenum (undrafted, 2 teams in 4 years).

With that group, nearly .500 seems pretty good, actually.

  25. 25 ACViking said at 12:26 PM on November 20th, 2016:

    That’s a pretty shaky group.

Young was forced on Fisher by owner Bud Adams (so the story’s always been told from the moment TN selected him 5th overall).

Fisher inherited Bradford, who couldn’t stay healthy.

All the rest were NFL journeymen at best.
    ________________

If Goff doesn’t put up some wins and good numbers the rest of this season, I’d be surprised to see Fisher get that rumored — but still unconfirmed — extension.

Goff was Fisher’s guy over Wentz — who, by all measurables, seems like a near-clone of McNair (though not quite as athletic).

Fisher and Hue Jackson . . . what did they NOT see in Wentz? Wow.

  26. 26 Dave said at 12:38 PM on November 20th, 2016:

I wouldn’t call that pretty good. If you want pretty good, check this out…

This team was 38 games under 500 over 6 seasons prior to this retread coach being hired. The new coach came in and traded away two 2nd round picks for a 28 year old QB who was considered a game manager and former first round bust, who was beat out by a 2nd round draft pick in his previous place of employment. This coach went on to be 19 games over 500 in his first 3 1/2 years with his new team. His name of course is Andy Reid.

    ..that’s pretty good.

  27. 27 Media Mike said at 8:26 AM on November 20th, 2016:

I always get excited when we play Seattle because I get to see an actual QB who has talent, brains, humility; but not “swag”, a yogurt deal, and/or a knack for being massively overrated.

Of course Wilson, and Peyton and Brady and Brees, all do schlocky ads……but they’re actually good players. Not guys who have their ad persona substitute for quarterbacking the game properly.

  30. 30 CrackSammich said at 9:05 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Ah. So the rest of your comment was completely irrelevant. Just an opportunity to take a pot shot at another player on your shit list.

You really are a one trick pony.

  31. 31 Media Mike said at 10:18 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Nope; big Wilson fan. But if you’d rather take shots at me go right ahead. Wilson is consistently underrated when people talk about the best QBs in the league. So you can take your judgement of relevancy and shove it directly up your rear end and go f yourself with it.

  32. 32 CrackSammich said at 10:30 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Yes, and of the 40 or so QBs that have played in the league this year, you’re comparing him to only one.

…who, considering he isn’t involved in any of these conversations except that you just can’t stop yourself from complaining about the same players everyday, is not relevant to the Eagles or Wilson.

  35. 35 ChoTime said at 10:30 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Article about how Randall was the prototype for the running/throwing, dual-threat QB that is on the rise. As they point out, such QBs have led their team to the Superbowl the last four seasons. (Sorry, Mike) I like to be reminded of RC because he’s the reason I’m an Eagles fan. Everyone else in Hawaii was bandwaggoning on the Niners back in the late 80s, but RC was just so badass. It’s sad that things didn’t work out for him on the Eagles, and maybe it’s sad that he served as a cautionary tale for Donnie, who really hurt himself by downplaying his athleticism.

All things equal, I like Mariota better than Wentz, but it is what it is… #HawaiiBias

  36. 36 Media Mike said at 10:34 AM on November 20th, 2016:

The best version of RC was still 98 Vikings. All of the arm talent, none of the running induced poor decisions.

And putting Wilson in the “dual-threat” category with people rather than looking at his as Steve Young isn’t apt.

And the only guy with any scramble ability to win that game was Wilson. Flacco, Brady, and Manning were the other winners.

But agreed Cunningham was the man, just a shame our coaching staff didn’t teach him how to play the game the right way prior to him leaving town.

  37. 37 Media Mike said at 10:41 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Also, thanks for posting. Interesting read. I don’t think the writer is doing a good job distinguishing between “running” and “play extending scrambling.” I think it is a very important one.

  38. 38 ChoTime said at 11:09 AM on November 20th, 2016:

That distinction isn’t easily made. Steve Young has the 3rd most running yards of any QB in history: he was a runner, he also happened to be an absolutely fabulous passer. Newton and Vick just never got that good at the passing thing. And it’s always better to get the ball to your scoring threats in space. This is a passing league.

  40. 40 ChoTime said at 11:23 AM on November 20th, 2016:

Seriously? The run game is scandalously devalued in today’s NFL. I enjoy the brutality, teamwork, persistence, and athleticism and resent the artificial elevation of the passer. But you were talking about running QBs, I think.

  41. 41 Media Mike said at 11:29 AM on November 20th, 2016:

I’d buy that for a dollar. QBs throw, RBs run and catch, WRs catch.

  42. 42 ACViking said at 11:58 AM on November 20th, 2016:

So enjoyed the early Randall years of ’87-’90.

Just mentioning his name reminds me of two absolutely ruined, horrible New Year’s Eves (12/31/88 and 12/31/89 . . . Fog Bowl, and playoff loss to the Rams and Fritz F’ing Shurmer’s 2-man mush rush).

Unfortunately, Randall — by his own later admission — lacked the commitment to learning the QB position through film study (the loss of QB coach Doug Scovil, genuine father figure for RC, in 12/89 to a heart attack also set him back) . . . and, according to some players (like Reggie White?), wasn’t a particularly great teammate.

Compounding Randall’s regular and post-season troubles:

    – Didn’t have much O-line support (although Buddy Ryan traded a 1st in ’88 to the Colts for OG Ron Solt, who was coming off an All Pro season — but who’d already failed PEDs test at the time of the trade . . . and played like a former PEDs user in Philly).

    – Didn’t have a go-to RB (although Ryan drafted Byars and Toney with his first two picks as HC-GM . . . but Byars turned out to be an H-back with great hands and Toney was a JAG).

    – Didn’t have a great WR after ’88 (because Quick’s knees gave out and Chris Carter had a drug problem — although Barnett and Williams were solid from ’90-’93).

Randall was surely productive and entertaining.

But his playoff record is a dagger.

  108. 108 SteveH said at 3:10 PM on November 20th, 2016:

Marty Morningwheg calling the plays does not inspire confidence.

    one can hope.

  114. 114 SteveH said at 3:18 PM on November 20th, 2016:

I don’t understand the Ravens coverage. They’re giving up massive chunks of yards on the shortest routes. I thought the idea of giving up the underneath catch was to tackle immediately and give up no YAC?

  115. 115 Insomniac said at 3:24 PM on November 20th, 2016:

The Ravens just aren’t a good team. Flacco can’t win a game on his own.

  121. 121 SteveH said at 3:27 PM on November 20th, 2016:

I didn’t. That team inspires no confidence this year. I’m just surprised how bad their defense looks.

  125. 125 SteveH said at 3:28 PM on November 20th, 2016:

Actually the sad thing about this game is that the Ravens only have 10 at this point. Just 10 against Dallas’ defense? Come on guys, you can do better.

  126. 126 Sean Stott said at 3:29 PM on November 20th, 2016:

Why are there so many shitty teams this year, except the NFC East?

  127. 127 SteveH said at 3:31 PM on November 20th, 2016:

Flacco is so balls, 9 Td’s 9 picks? We’d kill for weapons like Mike Wallace and Steve Smith.
