Gameday – PHI at CIN

Big news. Jordan Matthews is out.

Not good.

He is far and away the Eagles best receiver. So what happens now? Nelson Agholor is playing and will have a big shot at redemption. This could actually be huge for him. It gives him a chance to get passes thrown his way. Sometimes being put in a tough situation brings out the best in a player. Agholor won’t just be playing for himself. His team needs him.

Neither the Bengals nor the Eagles have been scoring much recently so this becomes a defensive struggle with focus on the run game. The Eagles run the ball better and defend the run better so that should give them an advantage in this type of game. With Matthews out, the Eagles should run more than they usually do. RB Ryan Mathews is also out so that means extra work for Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles. This could also be a game to mix in more QB runs. Watch for that.

Donnie Jones is going to be a key player in this game. Punting is not a bad thing when you have a good defense and the other team struggles to score points. If the Eagles can play field position football and good defense, that helps in a game like this.

I wrote my game preview for PE.com, but that was before the Jordan Matthews news. His absence does change things.

This is a huge game for the Eagles. It will be interesting to see how the team responds. The last 2 weeks they lost to guys who will one day be in the Hall of Fame. Andy Dalton isn’t on that level. The defense has to make some plays today. The offense has to find a way to score points. It wouldn’t hurt if Sproles could break a long punt return to help the offense out. Every point could be critical in a game like this.

One note to Doug Pederson…don’t go for it in scoring territory. Kick the FG and put points on the board. Put pressure on Cincy to have to score.

This doesn’t have to be pretty. The Eagles just have to find a way to win.

Need a good performance today for sure – but especially from the defence. They had their worst performance of the year last week and i really want them to rebound well. If they do then i think we win the game relatively easily… if they let up points and we find ourselves chasing the game this could get ugly fast.

I was not able to watch last week, but we put up all of 13 points. I get that the defense featured badly timed blunders and wasn’t at its best, but I did see the Washington game, where both of our lines were handled, and if our defense looked worse vs Green Bay than it did against Washington, then shame on Aaron Rodgers, because we gave Cousins a pathetic pass rush and made him look top-tier. I read that AR was his old self, hitting covered WR’s, and frustrating an otherwise engaged defense.

Well wierd thing is we moved the ball well… we just had horrible starting position every drive – and Packers just devoured the clock going on long scoring drives every time we had the ball. think wentz had 3 drives and scored 10 points (and final drive was a rushed 2 minute one. 3rd quarter Wentz through a bad int to waste a positive drive and then they kicked a field goal having had the drive stall with penalties.

4th quarter became a mess – trying to chase the game with no WR’s and a defence just sending waves of blitzes is not a recipy for rookie success – but the reallity is that the offence looked ok or good most the game.

I don’t mind the final 4 for college not including Penn State, but if you’re going to keep the 1 loss teams as 2-3-4, what is fraud Clemson 2 and not 4? They’re a joke, their “QB” is an overrated piece of garbage, and they deserve to be slapped by Bama in the first game.

We need 4 things to happen on offense to be successful today:

    1. Agholor doesn’t drop the ball
    2. Ertz doesn’t drop the ball
    3. Kelce doesn’t get any penalties
    4. Peters doesn’t get any penalties

  43. 43 shah8 said at 1:20 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Seriously, though, Doug, you’re going to have to quit your mickey mouse shit. You don’t have the TEs, you don’t have the RBs (well, sproles, sorta), and your OL sucks at mauling people downfield.

Plus, Wentz needs to learn the basics of NFL QBíng…

  44. 44 Dragon_Eagle said at 1:23 PM on December 4th, 2016:

You forgot we don’t have any WRs either.

  45. 45 shah8 said at 1:28 PM on December 4th, 2016:

No chance. The ball hit him in his hands.

  49. 49 shah8 said at 1:25 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Nah, pass was too high… Did hit him in the hands, but…

  50. 50 Dragon_Eagle said at 1:26 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Seriously. It wasn’t easy, but it was catchable. Wentz put it where DGB could make the play and away from the defender. Good throw.

  51. 51 Iskar36 said at 1:26 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Hit him in the hands. Period. Ball was high, but that isn’t a difficult catch for an NFL WR.

    … i hope youre kidding.

  55. 55 shah8 said at 1:25 PM on December 4th, 2016:

DBG is huge, and he had to really go up for it.

  56. 56 scratcherk said at 1:26 PM on December 4th, 2016:

had to be high though, there was a defender in front of him, he had to catch that

  57. 57 Iskar36 said at 1:28 PM on December 4th, 2016:

But that’s the point. Why not use his size to your advantage. That ball was thrown over the defender in a spot DGB could make the catch.

  58. 58 Crus57 said at 1:24 PM on December 4th, 2016:

It’s like all our WRs practice with a ball that’s twice the size, and are shocked when it suddenly goes through their hands in a game.

  80. 80 kajomo said at 1:35 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Remember when people were worried somebteam might poach Jim Schwartz from us as a HC? More than anything his unit has been the biggest disappointment. I knew the WRs were bad. I knew we’d struggle on offense. We should be able to hang our hats on this defense and they have been below average.

  81. 81 Crus57 said at 1:37 PM on December 4th, 2016:

The D has been the biggest disappointment? ok. The offense is terrible.

  82. 82 Fufina said at 1:39 PM on December 4th, 2016:

yeah but rookie with banged up OL, RB and no WR talent is expected to be bad. This defence should be better than it is.

  83. 83 iceberg584 said at 1:41 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yeah, but the two are obviously related. When the offense repeatedly goes three-and-out or turns over the ball, the defense eventually starts to crumble.

  84. 84 kajomo said at 1:43 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I agree to an extent, but leaving WRs wide open on 3rd and long and allowing Cody fucking Core beat us deep has nothing to do with this offense.

Also the offense was keeping pace with GB. The defense couldn’t get off the field

  85. 85 kajomo said at 1:39 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Can’t be disappointed by something you expect. This offense should not be surprising to anyone.

  86. 86 scratcherk said at 1:38 PM on December 4th, 2016:

wow, the eagles suck so bad, how can a bunch of rich players be this bad, they are supposed to be pros

  141. 141 Aaron said at 2:09 PM on December 4th, 2016:

do you ever sit on your tv and watch the couch

  142. 142 Allen3000 said at 1:59 PM on December 4th, 2016:

How do these guys look themselves in the mirror and feel content with their effort? I missed the entire 1st quarter. It was the first time in awhile where I didn’t get agitated or anxious that I was missing part of an Eagles game. With the effort today – why bother anymore???

I still watch bc I’m a glutton for pain and will try to focus on the positives. But right now, I just see a lot of weaknesses and majorly under performing players. Disappointing to say the least.

  143. 143 BobSmith77 said at 1:59 PM on December 4th, 2016:

It is really troubling that this team now for 2+ months comes out so poorly on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

It certainly is a red mark against the coaching staff and their preparation.

  144. 144 DarthBanner said at 2:03 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yep. Took the rest of the league all of 3 games to figure doug simpleton out. Bad preperation, poor discipline, bad play calling and poor decision making. Can’t really defend him anymore. The one good thing coming out of this season might be Wentz, but I’m starting to doubt even that right now.

  145. 145 BobSmith77 said at 2:06 PM on December 4th, 2016:

You go overboard but the repeated mental mistakes/discipline as well as bad preparation have been issues for a while now.

They’ll happen to every NFL team during the course of a season but generally don’t over a prolonged period like the Eagles have had now since the Steelers’ game.

  146. 146 DarthBanner said at 2:11 PM on December 4th, 2016:

All the things I mentioned are generally indicative of a bad coaching staff when they are reoccuring throughout a season. Clearly they have talent issues, but these things have nothing to do with talent.

  147. 147 Dragon_Eagle said at 2:01 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Would someone explain why we see so little of Celek?

  148. 148 DarthBanner said at 2:03 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  149. 149 Allen3000 said at 2:02 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    Almost a pick 6. Sheesh.

  150. 150 Kohlhaas said at 2:03 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Do we just not throw any passes to the outside unless they’re less than 5 yards? Why do we have no sideline routes?

  151. 151 Kohlhaas said at 2:04 PM on December 4th, 2016:

nm. We do and they don’t work either.

  152. 152 Allen3000 said at 2:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

DGB just ran a nice deep out/short flag route. Wentz just missed him badly.

  153. 153 Allen3000 said at 2:03 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Okay, nice blocking there and pass to Burton. Let’s get some more of that.

  154. 154 shah8 said at 2:04 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I can only laugh at this offense.

  155. 155 BobSmith77 said at 2:04 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Monday night vs. Packers was the game that killed broader interest in this season. This will put a nail in the coffin.

  156. 156 Allen3000 said at 2:06 PM on December 4th, 2016:

WTF??!! This offense looks terribly inept and dysfunctional right now. Coaches and players have to answer for this bullshit.

  157. 157 Dragon_Eagle said at 2:06 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    Horrible throw.

  158. 158 kajomo said at 2:06 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  159. 159 Aaron said at 2:06 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I know there are lots of holes on this douchbag team, but the importance of building an offensive line cannot be understated enough, that would cover a lot of deficiencies in this loser team

  160. 160 Allen3000 said at 2:07 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Ugh…Wiiiiiiide open. All you had to do was just literally throw it in bounds. No defender in sight.

  161. 161 shah8 said at 2:07 PM on December 4th, 2016:

horrible throw to a wide open guy…

  162. 162 Kohlhaas said at 2:07 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Had him open. Just made a shit throw. We’ve overrated Wentz by a wide margin.

  163. 163 Iskar36 said at 2:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

That was one of Wentz’s worst throws. WR Waaaaaaay to open to miss and by a lot.

  164. 164 Kohlhaas said at 2:09 PM on December 4th, 2016:

and very little pressure on him.

  165. 165 BobSmith77 said at 2:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Offensively they have 2 gears right now. Hard to draw up anything that would work with how the OL is playing and Wentz’s accuracy so far.

The body language is bad though especially on the sidelines. Way too many guys sitting on the bench and looking dispirited.

I don’t expect them to come out like gangbusters in the 2nd half this week & make it a game like they have bee doing this season.

  166. 166 DarthBanner said at 2:14 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  168. 168 Dave said at 2:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Wentz has really regressed in the past 2 months. His accuracy is nowhere near where it was in the first month of the season.

  169. 169 DarthBanner said at 2:13 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    Yup.

  170. 170 Dragon_Eagle said at 2:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

This is possibly the worst Wentz has looked as a passer all season. 2 INTs got dropped, several passes off the mark, that one was way off on an open receiver.

Regression is a sign of poor coaching.

  171. 171 Mitchell said at 2:10 PM on December 4th, 2016:

    3 ints got dropped

  172. 172 Iskar36 said at 2:10 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Three if you count the screen that Dunlop almost caught.

  173. 173 Allen3000 said at 2:10 PM on December 4th, 2016:

We have 3 QB coaches too so that is alarming. I’m giving him a pass bc he’s young and still learning. I am a bit nervous about the accuracy issues as of late.

  174. 174 BobSmith77 said at 2:11 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Truth. It is his worst half of football by far. Even worse than the Vikings’ 1st half where he did respond after a horrendous 1st quarter.

  175. 175 Insomniac said at 2:13 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Wentz’s accuracy and ball placement were all over the place at NDSU. Why is this a surprise now?

  176. 176 Dragon_Eagle said at 2:14 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Not a surprise. A disappointing slide back. His accuracy was better, much better, earlier in the season.

  177. 177 Insomniac said at 2:18 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I’m going to say it wasn’t. He was throwing short to intermediate more earlier this season.

  178. 178 BobSmith77 said at 2:28 PM on December 4th, 2016:

I wouldn’t say much better but this game has been particularly bad.

  179. 179 shah8 said at 2:08 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Virtually our only successful plays are a Smallwood run, a couple of Wentz scrambles, and, like three throws down the middle into zone gaps.

    This is HORRIBLE.

  180. 180 Aaron said at 2:13 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  183. 183 Aaron said at 2:15 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  184. 184 Insomniac said at 2:18 PM on December 4th, 2016:

A draft to retool the offense, trade for Brandin Cooks, and hope Wentz can get more accurate. We’re going to be very mediocre if Wentz can’t throw the deep ball well.

  185. 185 Mitchell said at 2:17 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Its sad that after this loss, the only thing we can look forward too is more Vikings losses…… Sad sad sad

  186. 186 Corry said at 2:17 PM on December 4th, 2016:

  202. 202 DarthBanner said at 2:21 PM on December 4th, 2016:

So the Eagles best play of the half was a missed extra point by the Bengals.

  203. 203 Allen3000 said at 2:22 PM on December 4th, 2016:

105 yards for our offense at the half. That is just deplorable and gives us no hope to stay competitive with any team in the NFL. We are regressing big league.

Growing pains are expected, but this is just inexcusable.

When we look back on the season, we will all almost assuredly ask ourselves, ‘how in the hell did we blow out the Steelers???’

  204. 204 Kohlhaas said at 2:25 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Honestly, I wish we would have lost that game at this point. It was the game that changed my expectations.

  205. 205 Allen3000 said at 2:30 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Yeah, it was the ultimate tease. I came in hoping to be 10-6 at best with Bradford and maybe 8-8 if we’re lucky with Wentz. Had no clue he would be as good as he looked early on so all my expectations got thrown out the window following that game. I thought we would at least finish 10-6. I mean, why not? We have a great front 7, a pair of great safety’s and a solid QB.

But of course we had to be brought down to earth in humiliating fashion.

  206. 206 truehaynes said at 2:27 PM on December 4th, 2016:

Amazing he has coasted for so long based on what he did with the Titans more than 15 years ago.

Marvin Lewis isn’t that far off though. Wonder if he does finally get fired this year if the Bengals only finish with 6 wins.
