Halftime – BAL 20, PHI 14

Posted: December 18th, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 156 Comments »

What an odd 1st half. Things started really ugly, with a Carson Wentz INT and a quick Ravens TD. Then the Eagles came up with a takeaway deep and got a quick TD of their own. Weather became an issue and the Eagles decided to go for 2, which they got. That put them up 11-10.

The Ravens put together a FG drive. The Eagles got the ball back and decided to focus on running the ball. They methodically moved down the field, running the ball over and over. That ended with a FG to put them up 14-13.

The Eagles had momentum. Things felt good.

Then Baltimore had a long KOR and came up with a 30-yard TD pass at the end of the half. They now lead 20-14. That was a dagger. You can’t allow points like that with just seconds on the clock. Giving up a FG would have been bad enough, but a TD? Bad.

The game has been a mixture of ups and downs. We’ll see what happens in the 2nd half.

  82. 82 Dave said at 4:28 PM on December 18th, 2016:

It that you Reuben Frank..JK, I like the idea of passing there. Give your rookie some Mojo if he makes it.

  83. 83 Corry said at 4:34 PM on December 18th, 2016:

If you put Mathews in, I think it at least gives the illusion you may try to run it and maybe give the Ravens something else to think about. Going with that personnel, in that formation, the Ravens knew it was pass all the way.

Though, given their defensive response, I think they were bringing the house regardless of what we did.

  84. 84 DarthBanner said at 4:11 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Pederson is such a loser. Takes away any good feeling from a comeback when the rookie QB sorely needs it.

  85. 85 meteorologist said at 4:14 PM on December 18th, 2016:

I was cool with it but I DEFINITELY see this point of view. I almost felt like Wentz was disappointed to have to run out for the 2PT attempt after that drive

  86. 86 xeynon said at 4:15 PM on December 18th, 2016:

So going to overtime and losing would’ve been better? That would have been a 50-50 shot at best – might as well just take it and get it over with.

  87. 87 anon said at 4:28 PM on December 18th, 2016:

OT at least gives you a chance.

  88. 88 xeynon said at 4:32 PM on December 18th, 2016:

So does a two point conversion attempt. And unlike OT, it comes with almost no injury risk or other downsides.

  89. 89 DarthBanner said at 4:15 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Had all the momentum. Take them to OT. Especially in the midst of a massive losing streak. Plus why is Mathews not out there? Just all around bad from a bad head coach.

  90. 90 anon said at 4:28 PM on December 18th, 2016:

i mean i think Ped knew they weren’t getting into the endzone

  91. 91 A_T_G said at 4:35 PM on December 18th, 2016:

I mean they did just half a game before that.

  92. 92 A_T_G said at 4:15 PM on December 18th, 2016:

On the road in a game that doesn’t truly matter? If he takes it to overtime and Suggs takes out Wentz’s knee? If he goes to OT and they lose in the end?

    It was the right call.

  93. 93 meteorologist said at 4:18 PM on December 18th, 2016:

If they GET to OT with that wind

  94. 94 xeynon said at 4:18 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Agree with this perspective 100%. The upside of winning this game was minimal, and in any case the chance of winning it in OT was no higher than the chance of converting that two point play (and arguably lower, with as you note the risk of a catastrophic downside). Pederson continues to show he’s not afraid to take smart chances.

  95. 95 DarthBanner said at 4:19 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Wasn’t smart at all. Bad play call, bad personel, and crushed any positives from the comeback. Lost the game with the call. Doug is a big part of this big losing streak. No kudos for that.

  96. 96 xeynon said at 4:22 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Winning this game would’ve done nothing for them – it’s meaningless, they’re out of the playoffs anyway.

As A_T_G noted, going to overtime does not raise the chances they win the game, but DOES put Wentz and other guys at risk for injury. I want Carson spending his offseason studying tape, doing drills to improve his throwing motion, and working with his receivers to continue to develop his timing and instincts, not rehabbing a knee injury.

  97. 97 DarthBanner said at 4:23 PM on December 18th, 2016:

And I want Carson to stop regressing and gain some confidence. According to you we should bubblevwrap him the rest of the season.

  98. 98 xeynon said at 4:30 PM on December 18th, 2016:

No, we should continue to play him, just not expose him to unnecessary risk (of which going to OT in this game would’ve been the definition).

  99. 99 anon said at 4:30 PM on December 18th, 2016:

He did with that run in score. You could tell how big that was. Kick the extra point and lets go to OT.

  100. 100 anon said at 4:30 PM on December 18th, 2016:

The game isn’t meaningless when you’re on the field. Guys gave effort the whole game, had a comeback td – at least give them a chance to win. Team hasn’t won in like 6 weeks – feels good to win, instead of ANOTHER loss on the final play

  101. 101 xeynon said at 4:31 PM on December 18th, 2016:

They DID have a chance to win, with that two point play. Basically the same chance they would’ve had to win by going to OT.

If you ask players what they prefer to do in that situation, most say go for it. Players like being aggressive and playing to win.

  102. 102 ChoTime said at 4:30 PM on December 18th, 2016:

People don’t seem to realize that going for it is the higher % play for the win. Kicking is the % play for the tie and eventual loss.

  103. 103 anon said at 4:31 PM on December 18th, 2016:

In general stats, but not agains the ravens. RZ pass play w/ this team? 10% chance of success.

  104. 104 xeynon said at 4:34 PM on December 18th, 2016:

The Ravens were playing at home, have an offense that was moving the ball with ease against us on its last few possessions, and have one of the best kickers in the league. You would have to favor them to win if it goes to OT.

  105. 105 ChoTime said at 11:46 AM on December 19th, 2016:

    chode boy

  107. 107 xeynon said at 4:14 PM on December 18th, 2016:

No complaints there – going for two was the right call. On the road with a gassed defense against a team with the best kicker in the league is less than a 50-50 shot in overtime.

  108. 108 DarthBanner said at 4:17 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Gassed defense? Eagles had the ball for something like 15 minutes more than the Ravens and the Eagles defense was only on the field for like 3 plays in the last 8 minutes of the game. If any defense was gassed it was the ravens. Take them to OT.

  109. 109 Aaron said at 4:18 PM on December 18th, 2016:

you’re wrong, you give up yet, i owned you once

  110. 110 xeynon said at 4:20 PM on December 18th, 2016:

The Eagles’ D was getting shredded for most of the second half.

  111. 111 DarthBanner said at 4:22 PM on December 18th, 2016:

For a whole 7 points? The Ravens only had the ball for 23 minutes all game and only 3 plays in the final 8 minutes. Nice revisionist history.

  112. 112 xeynon said at 4:29 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Their last two drives were a long TD drive which torched the Eagles’ D with both the pass and the run and a long drive that only failed to produce points because of a turnover. I had no confidence that the Eagles’ D was going to stop them in OT and I don’t see why you would’ve.

  113. 113 DarthBanner said at 4:31 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Then the eagles had a long drive for a field goal, the defense came out for 3 plays with the 2 minute warning in the middle, then got the rest of the game to rest. If they can’t handle OT after that when only being on the field for 23 minutes all game then they should all be cut and Doug’s conditioning program needs to be seriously questioned.

  114. 114 xeynon said at 4:39 PM on December 18th, 2016:

The Ravens weren’t trying to do anything but grind clock on that drive. Most teams get stops when that’s the situation.

Beside the fact that to me they already looked worn down, we have another game on Thursday. Playing more football today would hurt us for that.

  115. 115 anon said at 4:31 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Assuming ravens even got the ball in OT

  116. 116 xeynon said at 4:36 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Which is a pretty safe assumption. The Eagles offense had trouble converting red zone opportunities into TDs in this game, and has had trouble with that all year.

  117. 117 BobSmith77 said at 4:38 PM on December 18th, 2016:

  123. 123 DarthBanner said at 4:33 PM on December 18th, 2016:

According to some the defense was “gassed”. I guess some people will stop at nothing to excuse Doug’s mistakes.

  124. 124 A_T_G said at 4:41 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Yeah, some people look for reasons no matter what… said the guy agreeing that it was a problem that the defense got off the field too quickly.

  125. 125 DarthBanner said at 4:43 PM on December 18th, 2016:

I’m pretty sure he was being sarcastic, in that the offense has been pretty terrible so the eagles best chance to win is with the defense on the field. That’s how I read it anyway.

  126. 126 A_T_G said at 4:49 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Well, I guess it says something about one of our perspectives that I found this argument no less reasonable than the OT position.

  127. 127 xeynon said at 4:42 PM on December 18th, 2016:

It wasn’t a mistake. The evidence generally shows that going for two in that situation and going to OT give you more or less the same odds of winning the game. The fact that the defense was having trouble stopping the Ravens over the last 20 minutes of the game just means the odds for OT are WORSE. And going to OT carries other risks (injury, further wear-and-tear on guys who have to come back to play another game in four days). There’s really no good argument against what Pederson did here.

Right. There never is according to you. Pederson is a fantastic coach at 5-9 in the middle of a 5 game losing streak and a 1-7 stretch. Move over Belichik. Probably should rename the Lombardi trophy the Pederson trophy while their at it. Hall of fame bound most definitely.

  129. 129 xeynon said at 5:03 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Pederson is a rookie coach working with a badly overmatched roster. I’m not saying he’s great, but I’ve seen more good than bad this year and he certainly deserves more than 14 games before we start calling for the team to fire him. But keep strawmanning my position and arguing for acting like the Browns if that makes you happy.

  130. 130 Buge Halls said at 5:19 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Doug is a first year coach with a rookie QB, a busted OL and the shambles of the team left over from Chip. Take a look at Reid’s first season why don’t you? Hell, why you’re at it, take a look at Belicheat’s first couple years at Cleveland. It’s amazing how little football knowledge some people have here! It’s not Madden, it takes a couple years to turn around a franchise. You’d probably like to have them fire Pederson and start all over again.

    You’re right, stop feeding him.

  133. 133 A_T_G said at 4:39 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Wait, what? How is it a problem that the defense wasn’t on the field enough today? And what is the solution to that problem?

  134. 134 unhinged said at 4:35 PM on December 18th, 2016:

I liked DP’s decision, not as a strategy, but as a statement. Our season was over weeks ago, but the pressure of the clock, the win or lose stakes – they are inherent to the game and the experience is worthwhile for the players who remain on the team. Also, they have 4 days before they meet the Giants who have given up 6.5 points over the last two games. No point in dragging it out.

  135. 135 BobSmith77 said at 4:36 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Me too. This season is over and rather him try to go for the victory instead of going to OT especially with how his defense played today.

  136. 136 xeynon said at 4:37 PM on December 18th, 2016:

The point about having to play a Thursday game this week is a good one.

  137. 137 BobSmith77 said at 4:43 PM on December 18th, 2016:

What has surprised me the most this year about Pederson as a coach has been his aggressiveness.

Yeah part of it is their offensive limitations but no team has gone for it more on 4th down and today’s decision at the end of the game was in line with how he has been willing to gamble this season.

  138. 138 Dave said at 4:45 PM on December 18th, 2016:

I think that has more to do with talent level. When you are constantly the underdog, you have to take chances.

  139. 139 truehaynes said at 4:46 PM on December 18th, 2016:

How did semualo play? Had to study

  140. 140 A_T_G said at 4:53 PM on December 18th, 2016:

The first half the OL looked collectively like a split rail fence in a old Civil War movie that all the troops leap over as the take the hill. Wentz was the hill.

Second half they looked a lot better (but don’t go suggesting that maybe there was some coaching adjustments at work there) and Semualo didn’t stand out to me in either situation, good or bad.

  141. 141 D3FB said at 5:50 PM on December 18th, 2016:

For a rookie playing out of position pretty well.

  142. 142 BobSmith77 said at 4:48 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Part of it is pressure but it amazes me how bad this secondary is again. Yeah part of it is the lack of consistent pressure but they have been a train wreck by the end of the season. Watkins has been a debacle at S and Mills really has been including today at CB. Smith didn’t even put a move on him simply ran past him on that TD despite giving him 8 yards of cushion. McLeod can’t cover either and is a favorable matchup almost every time he is in 1-on-1 coverage.

Today was no different. If the wind didn’t severely hamper the Ravens for 2 quarters today, I’m confident Flacco would have dropped 350+ yards on them and shredded them even further.

  143. 143 Dave said at 4:53 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Nolan Carroll was terrible last year in the games leading up to his injury. McKelvin has made only 14 starts in the last 2 years and is 31 years old. Mills is a 7th round rookie and slow.

It amazes me that people think they should be anything but terrible.

  144. 144 myartz04 said at 4:55 PM on December 18th, 2016:

    It’s a shame Mills is so slow…He’s a competitive s.o.b.

  145. 145 BobSmith77 said at 4:56 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Then Roseman deserves more flak for that and I’d bet this pass defense over the past 7-8 weeks has been as poor statistically as any stretch of Davis’ tenure.

  146. 146 Dave said at 4:59 PM on December 18th, 2016:

He deserves flak for listening to Jim Schwartz and signing McKelvin and Brooks. He deserves flak for listening to Jim Schwartz and giving away Rowe for peanuts while Schwartz loved a 7th round pick in Mills.

He can learn from those mistakes and not listen to Schwartz in the future when it comes to personnel.

  147. 147 BobSmith77 said at 5:01 PM on December 18th, 2016:

    Fair enough.

  148. 148 xeynon said at 5:00 PM on December 18th, 2016:

This team had a ton of holes going into last offseason and not enough resources to patch all of them. Needed to get a QB (check) some better, younger OL (check), a decent safety to pair with Malcolm Jenkins (check), LBs to fit a 4-3 rather than 3-4 scheme (maybe check, Bradham has been solid but isn’t a long-term solution), playmakers at the offensive skill positions (not yet), cornerbacks (not yet). If the team’s corners still suck 2 years from now I’ll be ready to come down on Roseman but I’m going to give him a pass for now.

  149. 149 Dave said at 4:50 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Doug said in his press conference that the Ravens were in zero coverage (1 on 1 man coverage with everyone else blitzing). He said it’s harder to run against zero coverage on the goal line and that’s why he called a pass.

  150. 150 myartz04 said at 4:52 PM on December 18th, 2016:

And even though they had success running the ball…It’s just not that simple on the goal line.

  151. 151 Dave said at 4:54 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Yup, when the defense is just plugging gaps, it’s much harder to get a few yards.

  152. 152 BobSmith77 said at 4:54 PM on December 18th, 2016:

John Harbaugh may a real strategic mistake. With 6:21 left in the game, Harbaugh decided he needed to halt his team’s momentum, after a 54 yard reception by Wallace, by calling a timeout. With a 10-point lead (27-17), all the Ravens had to do was run the clock and kick a FG. Instead, Harbaugh thought it best to put the ball in Flacco’s hands (who has only made a handful of good decisions all year). The result? An interception, loss of momentum and barely winning the game after a failed Philadelphia 2-point conversion.

This Ravens’ team to me is the closest cpm we have seen of the Eagles this year and it doesn’t surprise me this game came down to the wire.

  153. 153 BobSmith77 said at 5:00 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Eagles’ patchwork OL played pretty well today and arguably had their best running blocking performance despite Marshall (look bad- slow, indecisive, and easy to bring down) getting 9 carries.

Just wish Pederson would have leaned a bit more on the run this year though in other games and hope he does so next year.

Leaned too heavily this year on Wentz and with mixed results.

  154. 154 xeynon said at 5:06 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Wentz is the only guy on the offense with the talent to make a transcendent play so it’s pretty obvious why they leaned on him. But if they want to him to develop into a true franchise QB they have to get him help starting this offseason.

  155. 155 BobSmith77 said at 5:11 PM on December 18th, 2016:

Amazing how bad the offensive skill players are around Wentz. Their worse than the Johnson/Small/Weaver/Broughton/Staley group McNabb had in ’99 although it is close.

This team, at least before the injuries at RB, had much better depth and flexibility although Staley was a notably better overall back.

Ertz certainly has the edge over Weaver (washed up by that point)/Broughton but I’d take Johnson/Small over this group of WRs.

  156. 156 Buge Halls said at 5:12 PM on December 18th, 2016:

I understand the going for the win call at the end – you get it, you’re a hero. But the good money is on taking the point and going into OT.c That being said, I see the team Pederson is trying to build and I like what is there early in the process.
