Return of the Prodigal Son

Some in the media were questioning Doug Pederson for putting Johnson right back into the lineup. Pederson hadn’t even met with Pederson yesterday when he told the press that Johnson would start at RT. This surprised some. Pederson gave a blunt, honest answer. Who is he supposed to play? Isaac Seumalo has a high ankle sprain. Not good. Allen Barbre is dealing with a hamstring. Big V is still working his way back from a knee injury. He might be available.
Johnson is healthy. He got the job.
There wasn’t much choice, and frankly playing Johnson is the smart thing. Get him back on the field. Get him back as part of the team. His negligence really hurt this team, but you have to move on from that. You also need to protect Carson Wentz. You’d hate for him to get hurt because a gimpy Big V was starting so Pederson could make some point about Johnson by keeping him on the bench. Play your best guys.
I’m sure Johnson will be rusty. There is being in shape and being in football shape. The last time he played a game the Eagles had a winning record and 2016 was a fun season. That was a long, long time ago. Still, if Johnson had been hurt and was put on IR as the player allowed to come back this year, wouldn’t we be welcoming him with open arms? I’m certainly not saying we should be happy with Johnson the person. We should be happy for the return of Johnson the RT. Even a sloppy version of him should be an improvement there over gimpy rookies.
Winning games would hurt the Eagles draft position, but it might be nice to go into the offseason with a win or two, especially over division rivals. Johnson’s absence really hurt this team. Will his return really help?

Normally I can’t stand Thursday night football. This is one week where it is good. Having Christmas fall on a weekend makes it tough when you are the only football fan in your family. They don’t want to plan around games. I’ve had more than a few arguments over the years as I had to explain the importance of a meaningless game.
The NFL did me a favor this year. I can watch the game on Thursday and then do the holiday thing on the weekend. The league’s gift to us. They certainly didn’t do us a lot of favors with the rest of the schedule.

I personally loved it at the time.. as I usually do when big balls Peddy goes for it. Of course I would make a horrible coach.
It was the right decision and given the circumstances/personnel, it was the right play call too.
I was on board with it, too. Good decision. Either way Carson gets another experience to learn from.
I was around here on game day, for the first time in a while. It was sadly negative. What ever happened to our tempered expectations this year?
I did notice that there was not a single comment condemning the call to go for two…until after it failed.
Seems pretty typical A_T_G. We are a grouping of Eagles fans for sure. We can’t be expected to decide if a decision is correct until it has proven to have failed or worked. That would require cognitive ability!
I think people would be more positive if it looked like we were improving (even if losing). Instead we see the same mistakes over and over, and that brings back awful memories of seasons past…
At least it ended well (game-tying TD!), but Wentz still making stupid decisions during the 1st three quarters can be depressing. We’ve had too many QB’s (not just ones we’ve drafted) who never got over that “phase” of being a rookie.

I was happy we went for two, even if we lost. Just the fact we finally had a 4th-quarter comeback felt really good.
Also, no need to risk injury for a meaningless game, so I liked the “Preseason Rules” feel of the decision. If you win, awesome! If not, at least we get better draft picks in rounds 2 – 7.

I actually don’t think it happens again. My personal belief is that he was trying to do the right thing by using the App. I would guess that he would lay off the suplements or perhaps go with products that are screened by team doctors.

Exactly what I meant yesterday in reply to Gary Barnes. They have put themselves in a great position to improve. I have said before this team improves just by default of being in Carson year 2. In reality it is just statistically unlikely that they lose so many close games.

I needed about another 30-yard TD run from Robert Kelley to eek out a win last night in the Iggles Blitz playoffs.

Unfortunately, Cousins is also passing that test this year and I think citing those stats from previous seasons isn’t really fair. I was all for making those jokes at his expense before the season, but he’s mostly looked good this year. So let’s be honest with ourselves. Cousins is no longer a fraud.

I think I played the table-top wargame a few times, and wasn’t there a video game in the late-ish 90s? But Robotech was kind of a big deal in the mid 80’s; I had to get up early on Saturday mornings to watch Lynn Min-mei and Rick Hunter and all that.
I’ll admit to having watched some Robotech in my day. I fell in love with Battletech/Mechwarrior as a teenager. As an aside, MW5 should be coming out in 2018/19.

It’s the second time you have sort of ominously insinuated you didn’t like him, in the last couple days. My fault for connecting those dots but it sure felt like you were trying to convey that.
Your feelings and my statements are separate things, understand that.
I came into the season saying Wentz was a project, he proved me wrong in the first handful of games, and he is not looking so good at this point. The dinking and dunking are somewhat understandable, the accuracy issues are concerning, but the situation has been bad for him. Who knows what the future will hold, but he is certainly no slam dunk as a franchise QB.

Cousins still has trouble beating teams with winning records. He’s failed at it more than he’s succeeded.
Verdict is still out for me. A ton to like, but this offseason is critical. He’s definitely in transition on some things. He seems to be working on some mechanics on the fly. It shows in his accuracy. If he aggressively hammers in the fundamentals he was taught this year, I think we will see a much improved QB next year. If we can get some luck with the O-line consistency, get the run game rolling or get him a primary target, I think he will have a very nice 2017.

Little remembered is the Eagles played this game on New Year’s Eve.

Even less remembered is that the year before, as a 6th grader, I traveled to see my high school soccer team in the state championship game. They were the hands down favorite, had slaughtered everyone they had played, and were the fastest team that anyone had seen.
The game was played in a torrential downpour with puddles covering more of the field than not, completely negating the fast break prowess of mighty Tulpehocken, who fell to an inferior opponent and foreshadowing the Eagles heartbreak in Chicago.
I guess I can never complain that I didn’t know fandom would be painful.

It is PPR. How did I get into the championship with this strange team? I made some crazy trades during the season that resulted in massing quality second tier players. Now, I’m afraid I’m about to get destroyed by a Titans fan.

It’s a shame that play happened at all. If the name plate on Mills jersey had said sherman… the third down stop would have resulted in a punt on fourth down.
I honestly think with the defense, once they upgrade corner, and the rest of the team gets year in the system, they’ll start performing consistently…or Duffy has given me rose colored glasses with his All-22s.
We have been bad at corner since Sheldon brown was allowed to leave. It almost seems as hard to find a good CB as it is to find a good QB.

The defense was a lot better when the starting safety didn’t have to play the slot. Brooks was not anything special, but he allowed Jenkins to be special instead of a minor liability. I imagine that there will be a FA signing *and* a draft pick (probably late) to address this spot.
That’s been the killer. Jenkins is a good fill in slot corner, but being delegated to those duties is really exposing him. Him and Rodney made a hell of a tandem in the secondary, now it’s been reduced on both fronts.
Say what you will about Brooks, but losing him was the beginning of the end for our defense.

Watkins is an underrated huge weakness in our D. Plays 50-65 % of the snaps as our Nickel DB and he’s responsible for like one TD per game. The rest of our CBs are far from great, McLeod is having bad games lately, DL isn’t getting the pressure it should. But Watkins could be the biggest problem of all of them, yet nobody (I read at least) really talks about him. I know you can’t expect too much from him, but still he underperformes. And it hurts us. Schwartz should make Smith NB. At least we can test him and see what we have.

I think “suggesting” is supposed to be “Suggs.” He did sort of spectate at the end of the play, but I don’t think he was going to be able to stop Wentz from getting in the end zone.
Jalen Mills might be my fav: “I was locking dudes down out there until that one play. Was it a call that I wanted to be in? No,” Jalen Mills said. “But regardless, plays have to be made out there in games like this.”
I can see why an aggressive DC would like the mentality.
He is right though. On teams with especially good WR they were testing this dude over and over and over early on. He generally had good coverage. He let up a few big plays where he had it covered very well (but never looks to play ball), and the catch was made. He never has a had a guy (until Smith on Sunday) streaking open because he was in the wrong spot or bit on a play fake etc.
I am genuinely intrigued by the guy. I think he can develop. I actually like him. Maybe it is just the green hair, but I am rooting for him.

Agreed. I think our expectations for Mills are way too high this year. He has shown promise and he seems to have the right attitude. I would love him as a 7th round developmental 4th corner. It isn’t his fault we are two or three guys short of that scenario.

3. This year’s schedule re: bye week placement for Eagles and opponents.

That tampering case with Maclin and the Chiefs still pisses me off- wasn’t within the “legal” tampering period, and we directly lost our best WR to another team.
Looking back, I don’t blame Maclin for leaving- his choice was to stay with Kelly in Philly, or go to KC (closer to home) to his original coach (Reid) and play in a more conventional offense that wouldn’t make him run a play every 22 seconds. Plus, he made more money.
Good for him, but it sucks for us

For those that aren’t aware, Politifact is a fact-checking website that rates the accuracy of claims by elected officials and others who speak up in American politics. I actually visited the site regularly during this year’s election cycle. Evidently, they now have entered the realm of fact-checking sports as well.
So without any knowledge of a zero blitz defense and how hard it is to run against a defense blitzing every gap, they determined that Doug was wrong to say the Eagles had a better chance to succeed passing for a 2 point conversation vs running.
I post this not to bring up politics or whether or not Doug was right or wrong. I just find this a fascinating microcosm of the world in which we live in today.

They didn’t mention that Wikileaks has the files up HOURS before they tweet, and it was the tweet that came out shortly after the Access Hollywood tape. Completely disingenuous.
I thought access hollywood leaked in response to wikileaks. So stupid they should have just put all the emails and the speeches out there – there was nothing bad in any of that shit, but her team completely misplayed the situation
I’m not sure there is anything in politics that’s not biased. I was more interested that a political website with the word fact in their URL pulled up a generic statistic and passed it off as fact without any analysis or expertise.
This is a classic Kempski-esque type of article. Spew out a generic stat that says the Eagles roster is 0.8 years older than the average roster (BTW, I made this # up for conversation purposes). Conclude that the Eagles roster is old.
There is no analysis, just a blunt comment based on a generic statistic to generate page views. We live in a time where critical thinking is required more than ever.
Life has turned into an Amazon review. I have to read/watch something and then determine if the author is intelligent or an idiot, been compensated for their viewpoint, is trying to gain publicity for themselves or others, or has some other agenda.
Sad you need critical thinking the most at a time when schools are least prepared to teach it.

Actually, the article gave a good amount of information for the reader to evaluate the decision themselves. They provided Pederson’s rationale and “fact
checked” it. Their own verdict (with which I disagree), is a single line.
It’s pretty rare to see both sides of a decision laid out so clearly and fairly. To denigrate the article based on their judgment is unfair.
There was no analysis. They fact checked based on one misleading statistic. I wouldn’t call that fair, I would call that cherry picking.
They gave you enough information to make up your mind. That statistic was not cherry picking; it was context. League-wide results in a similar situation is information. Cherry picking would be giving only that statistic and failing to provide the other side of the story. They just happened to make a different decision than Pederson or you (or me).

If Doug had no idea what the defensive alignment would be, then running the ball would be the better option according to the statistics provided. However, Doug knew that the defense would be in a zero blitz, an alignment meant to stop the run.
The context that is lacking would be the success rate for running against a zero blitz.
That’s true, it would be better if they had included that. But did Doug know the zero blitz would the call when he made his call?
Yes, Doug said in his press conference that the Ravens played that same defense earlier on a short yardage situation and he called pass fully expecting a cover zero blitz.
What to do when all the money you’ve made is related to a presidential election, and we won’t have another one for four years?
Honestly the whole thing is silly. The call was made and the other team made a better play.
Matthews could have flew over the pile for a score. Kelce and Carson could have fumbled the snap. Matthews could have been stuffed in the backfield. There about a dozen things that good have gone wrong/right there.
I really hate the over analyzing of everything.
