Going to the Senior Bowl every year is a great experience. You get to see the players practice. You get to be around them and see some of their personalities. You also get to be around NFL people…coaches, scouts and media types. There really is a lot to take in.

I can’t share every nugget I get down there. I’ll offer hints as best I can, but some stories I’m just not allowed to outright share. With that in mind…

I came away feeling better about Doug Pederson. He’s overly positive in his press conferences, but that’s a public face. He’s realistic about who can play and who can’t.

The Eagles key free agent is DT Bennie Logan. Nobody has a good feel for his future. The Eagles obviously want him back, but can they afford him? I have seen a few free agent lists compiled by smart media types and Bennie hasn’t been a Top 40 free agent on them. Maybe that means he will have a realistic price tag and the Eagles can keep him. You don’t want to develop good young talent and let those guys walk if you can help it.

There is no consensus on whether Alshon Jeffrey will hit free agency or whether the Eagles will pursue him. Really good player, but he’s got a couple of issues and you wonder if he’s worth elite money.

Non-Eagles people think highly of Carson Wentz. He’s got issues to work through, but they love his potential and see him as a franchise QB.

It isn’t lost on people that the Eagles went 5-1 with Lane Johnson, who was the team’s best OL when he played. Having him for a full season will make a big difference.

You can have a depressing debate on who was worse down the stretch, Leodis McKelvin or Nolan Carroll.

The Eagles must figure out slot corner. Malcolm Jenkins needs to stay back at Safety the whole year. Who knew losing Ron Brooks would hurt the defense?

The feeling is that DeSean Jackson won’t get big money as a free agent. Whether that could cause the Eagles to go after him is still unknown.

Dalvin Cook would be a great fit in the Eagles offense, but there are on and off-field concerns with him that could hurt his value.

No one has a clue what the Eagles are going to do for a #3 QB. They could draft one, but this is a weak QB class.

The feeling is that Wiz won’t be returning to the Eagles.

The Eagles need to find 2 starting WRs. You just can’t count on Nelson Agholor or DGB to play substantially better in 2017.

*****

Scott McCloughan, the Skins GM, sat in the stand near me and Jimmy Bama on Thursday. Most coaches and GMs go to the other side, which is only for NFL people. McCloughan is a different kind of guy. He struck up a conversation with a family in front of him. That happened to be the parents of WR Trent Taylor. McCloughan was just trying to be a nice guy.

Later a middle school football team came and sat in the stands. They walked in front of us. McCloughan said hello to the kids and was just trying to be friendly. It was cool to see an NFL executive just being a normal guy.

*****

Kiko Alonso is even weirder and dumber than you think.

*****

I sat behind Jay Glazer on one of the flights down. He believes in reclining for the whole trip. Love Glaze as a reporter, but you don’t want to sit behind that guy in an airplane.

*****

There was a lot of talk about how the coaches ran the practices. I wasn’t a huge fan of the CLE staff, but the Bears were far worse. Chip Kelly would have had a heart attack if he watched all the wasted time by that staff. Terrible.

I spent more time watching CBs and WRs than ever before. That meant less time on OL, DL, RB and LB.

*****

The Brick Pit remains the best barbecue joint in Mobile, if not all of Alabama. My BBQ rankings for the week:

The Brick Pit
Moe’s
The Shed
Saucy Q

Sadly no stop at Dreamland on this trip.

And now your humor for the day.

Thanks Tommy, interesting post. Was the reason you named Kiko a story you heard while he was with the Eagles? Or Dolphins?

Who knew losing Ron Brooks would hurt the defense?

The reason it hurt so much was the terrible play by Watkins, who became the Nickel DB and played 70 percent of the snaps. Carroll and McKelvin weren’t good, don’t get me wrong, but Watkins was THE weakness in our secondary.

Also: are Cooks on and off the field issues known to the public? First time I heard about it, but that doesn’t mean much, and that’s why I ask.

Watkins’s Chung-like “recognition” skills at safety were brutal.

  4. 4 Dave said at 3:00 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I feel just the opposite. Watkins was a Pro-Bowl player compared to McKelvin and Mills. Hell, Nnambi was better during his tenure in Philly than McKelvin and Mills.

After doing some reading on 19/20 being the cutoff for where we’ve seen the Eagles get a good guy vs. not; I’m suspending any round one trade downs below 19.

Round 1 Pick 15: Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State (A)
Round 2 Pick 17 (WASH): Adam Bisnowaty, OT/OG, Pittsburgh (B)
Round 3 Pick 10: Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina (B+)
Round 3 Pick 17 (WASH): Alvin Kamara, RB, Tennessee (A+)
Round 4 Pick 12: Larry Ogunjobi, DT, Charlotte (A+)
Round 4 Pick 33: Jordan Morgan, OG, Kutztown (B)
Round 5 Pick 11: Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas (A-)
Round 6 Pick 10: Jamaal Williams, RB, Brigham Young (A+)
Round 7 Pick 12: Garrett Sickels, DE, Penn State (C+)

C’mon Tommy, please don’t get my hopes that Cook might be available in the draft at spot 14/15. Not many players have the potential to transform an offense and that kid definitely can. He has that second gear which once he gets by the LOS….watch out and will be deadly on the wheel route a staple in the iggles offense. He has an OdelBeckum….aura about him. Special talent. Right now we just don’t have anyone like that on offense

  19. 19 Fufina said at 5:02 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I am a huge Alvin Kamara fan – think you can get him in the 2nd with our pick, just as big upside, no where near the character concerns.

Think we may well spend a high (1-3) pick on a RB this draft… but I would hate it being a 1st round pick (unless they trade back).

  20. 20 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 5:10 PM on January 29th, 2017:

Im not on the Cook train at all, esp at 14. And if we did trade back Id want John Ross.

  21. 21 Media Mike said at 5:25 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I read a Ross = D Jax comp from a skill set standpoint. How do you see him?

  22. 22 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 6:44 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I think Ross is a bigger than Djax. I dont know if hes as fast, but thats just nitpicking. I think you can use them the same way although Id be more willing to use Ross more on pitches and reverse.

  23. 23 D3FB said at 7:17 PM on January 29th, 2017:

Ross is a more complete route runner.

  24. 24 nopain23 said at 5:59 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I like Ross in the second. Like DJax he’s a one trick pony…granted he does that trick very well. I just think in the 1st you should get an all world talent like williams, catches everything , red zone threat and good blocker. Not saying williams will be available at 14/15 because he won’t.

  25. 25 Will Ft. Daft Punk said at 6:31 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I only say Ross because i think Williams Davis will be gone; and I think Ross while not as complete still has an elite skill.

  30. 30 D3FB said at 7:08 AM on January 30th, 2017:

  31. 31 Media Mike said at 5:24 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I’m really really really torn on Cook at 14. I can see the talent and project it here, but I’m not sure about the long term value of RB at that spot and Cook’s background isn’t ideal.

  33. 33 Media Mike said at 6:09 PM on January 29th, 2017:

Baltimore doesn’t really have a track record of adding RB in rd 1, so will Joe do that?

  34. 34 nopain23 said at 6:29 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I think while he learned a lot in Bmore Joe will try and do things his way…not just copy what they did there…just use it as a blueprint with his own nuances. If Doug says we need a dynamic playmaker on offense go get me the best guy I trust Joe will go get that guy regardless of position. All Joe’s job is to ensure that guy is the right guy.

  35. 35 Media Mike said at 8:30 PM on January 29th, 2017:

I think a lot of the more mainstream press are more in the business of entertainment than actual informative punditry. Actually I know they are, so I would take anything they publish or speak about with a grain of salt. They love the pageantry of politics, the grand stage so to speak. Europeans are so much more engaged with their political process than Americans are, and their press tends to be a lot better too.

  49. 49 Dave said at 7:01 PM on January 29th, 2017:

If when you mean mainstream press, you are referring to television news, I agree they are more about ratings than news. If you want the TV news, just show up at a diner on Saturday or Sunday morning for a recap by the locals.

Many newspapers, on the other hand, can still be excellent sources of information. The AP, Reuters, NPR, and foreign news sources (Toronto Sun, BBC, The Guardian…to name a few), are other good sources.

Twitter has really changed news, in my opinion for the better. I have access to all of the above, in an instant. I can also see what legal professors, former government administrators, CIA operatives, scientists, and other experts think about a specific situations in the headlines without the blather of a TV personality trying to raise their Q score or become famous.

Brexit is a chilling retort to that argument. As is the fact that a Le Pen has a shot in France. Very weird times. People fleeing the bad guys is causing everyone else to start doing dumb shit that fuels more bad guys.

What I can’t get over is the economic drivers behind the surge in populism. I get that things aren’t great for everybody, but they’re certainly better than they were 4 years ago, 8 years ago, 12 years ago. Hell, things were far worse back in the early nineties as well. I don’t get how everything is so much more terrible now than in years when it’s been quantifiably provable to be worse. Only difference I can see is the power of social media to let people fuel that rage.

  55. 55 Anders said at 2:59 AM on January 30th, 2017:

The second biggest party in Denmark is a party pretty similar to Le Pen. Biggest difference is that while they hate refuges, there economics policy is socialistic (oppose to Trump who clearly is a man who hates everybody except wealthy guys who can help him earn more money)

  56. 56 CrackSammich said at 11:50 AM on January 30th, 2017:

It really depends on how you quantify “worse”. The coal miners are a worn out example, but it does no good to tell them that, on average, Americans are doing better when their job is never coming back, and their area is as fucked economically as it is environmentally. Couple that with a general lack of upward mobility due to Baby Boomers retiring later and the dismal job market for the newly endebted out of college, and you get an atmosphere of stagnation and desperation, even if everything I just said is completely false (which it very well may be). But none of that matters, because the electorate *feels* that things are worse, and the man who isn’t too concerned with facts is there to validate those feelings and encourage their anger.

  57. 57 ChoTime said at 12:07 PM on January 30th, 2017:

I keep coming back to “political correctness.” This is the #1 thing you hear from these conservative white folks. They really do seem to feel that PC is the worst thing happening in all America. And I actually understand. They are losing their privilege, the status of being top on the totem pole simply because of their race and sex. Keep in mind that people don’t work for money, they work for status. Every time a black person becomes President or a gay person claws to have the same right as them, they lose something. Because status is zero-sum, by nature. It’s also why they love capitalism so much. The idea that some government can wave a magic wand and make everyone equal is a terrible thought to them, because they are on top. There truly is a major culture war going on (read: race/gender/religion war) and it’s absolutely a big element, maybe even bigger than the economics that most reasonable people use to analyze the scene.

  58. 58 Ankerstjernen said at 5:52 AM on January 30th, 2017:

I feel like adding a little to this: Two things make a huge difference between America and a European country like Denmark. First of, we have no such thing as citizens united, the money coming into campagins are fairly transparent and they do not matter very much because: 1) You can’t run campaign adds on tv and 2) our entire election process takes about three weeks, not 18 months. This means that the election itself is not very expensive and the media is not built to be dependent on election coverage providing content to fill up the streams all of the time. Secondly, our largest media conglomerate is a public non-profit organisation with several tv and radio stations and web news, called DR (Danish Radio). Before you all scream ‘communism’ be advised that the DR is not controlled in any way by the government or the parliament. It is constructed as an independent organisation to ensure that politicians cannot meddle with the coverage or editorial decision of any sort. The DR does not run adds at all, there is no commercial content at any time, its public service. The great strengthof the DR is that there is a standard of journalism capable of providing truly unbiased or uncorrupted news, free from political AND commercial interests. Something similar was actually supposed to happen with the way the US government handed over the airwaves and networcable infrastructure to broadcast companies back in the days – media companies were allowed to use the networks in exchange for an hour of ‘public service’ news every evening. What they forgot to do was to write into the agreement, that the news hour could not be allowed to ‘go to commercials’. So they can and do, and this means that the news in america is actually a profit machine – the more people who are watching the news, the more people are watching the commercials too, which makes the broadcasters money. Its reasonable to assume that this alone has been a driving force behind the massive tabloidization and sensationalizasion of american news that has brought about the destructive and misinformative change in the way politics are discussed in the US today and the disbelief in journalism that people like Donald Trump is opportunistically abusing in order to propone falsehoods and effectively render the truth itself irrelevant. Just my two cents..

The danger is that all it takes is the support of a committed minority (less than 30%) who have control of the machinery of state to create an authoritarian crap-hole. And the actions of both parties over the last 30-40 years have paved the way quite well (the 4th amendment has been toilet paper since at least the 80s).

Block like an OT. Run fast. Get open downfield. Create match-up nightmares.

    And Catch the ball.

Take Howard. And add him to that list.

You’re talking about a $12 mil contract over 4 years (2017-2020)with Howard if you take him there. Ertz’s cap hits are $5.6, $9.6, $9.1, and $8.5 over the same time.

That’s a lot to have tied up in TE; especially when this team sucks in 2TE sets due to the lack of any outside WR talent.

    But I don’t dispute a single thing you’ve said about Howard’s talent.

  79. 79 Anders said at 2:43 AM on January 30th, 2017:

I’ve completely written Cannon off because of his hands. I’d happily take a lesser athlete who can catch at this point.

A similar guy that nobody is talking about is Shelton gibson from WVU. He has excellent deep speed, good height, and solid hands. He will never be a volume WR, but can be a big play guy. I have no idea where to place him until the combine, but he may be a guy to watch for the eagles

  142. 142 D3FB said at 8:37 AM on January 30th, 2017:

Gibson flashed when I was watching someone else and I put him down as a guy to keep an eye on next year. No clue why he declared. If he had gone back he could have been top 100 next year. As it stands he’s probably a very late round guy or UDFA. He’s really inconsistent. As of right now he would basically be competing with Treggs and has more developmental ceiling, but the Eagles probably can’t justify spending a pick on a marginal upgrade over WR 6 and hoping he can be better in three years.

I find it laughable that this morning that many in the NFL world are lauding the John Lynch hiring as the second coming of Elway.

Elway was retired for 12 years when the Broncos gave him the GM job. He immediately signed Manning to be his QB as his defense was pretty good and the team had some good pieces on offense. Signing Manning was a coup, but in reality, there were only a handful of teams actually in the running.

In his short time in Denver, Manning was a 2-time All-Pro, 3-time Pro-Bowler, league MVP, and Super Bowl Champion. Does anyone honestly think Denver would have been anything other than mediocre without Manning.

Lynch may become a good GM and not fall into the Matt Millen category. The odds are stacked against him in San Fran with that poor roster and terrible ownership.

  155. 155 A_T_G said at 1:03 PM on January 30th, 2017:

  158. 158 BlindChow said at 1:56 PM on January 30th, 2017:

Elway had executive experience from running an Arena League team before the AFL folded. Elway also specifically stipulated he didn’t want to be GM when Denver took him on.

  159. 159 Dave said at 3:10 PM on January 30th, 2017:

You’re Rob of NE and you hate the patriots. In my mind, after an exhausting day of lifting weights, rehabbing, banging hot chicks, and social media ridiculousness, you get serious, put on your glasses, and post about the Eagles.

Yes you are Gronk in my mind. You and all the other Robs up there.

  193. 193 Ryan Rambo said at 1:28 PM on January 30th, 2017:

NJ Advance Media’s Mark Eckel reports the Redskins will target impending free agent NT Bennie Logan if he hits the open market.
The Redskins didn’t even have a pure nose tackle this past season, and their run defense suffered greatly because of it. Washington simply rotated linemen across their front, finishing 25th in run-defense DVOA. Logan didn’t fit quite as well in DC Jim Schwartz’s 4-3 scheme. He’s more of a traditional 3-4 nose and would be an excellent fit with the Redskins.

    Thanks–
Didn’t Eckel used to cover the Eagles? His name seems familiar to me

  195. 195 Ryan Rambo said at 2:13 PM on January 30th, 2017:

Yes. I’m not sure about his reliability though.

You could make a case for the Dream Weaver injury costing the Eagles a Super Bowl. I’m still not over it. He’s my favorite FB.

  199. 199 Sb2bowl said at 4:58 PM on January 30th, 2017:

I loved the guy; and his drops/fumble in the playoff game hurt even more when his career was ended.

Got to meet him when he was working with one of media outlets in Philly- real genuine. Glad he landed on his foot

  202. 202 ChoTime said at 12:18 PM on January 30th, 2017:

This is just heartbreaking. Injuries are the damned worst part of the game. Guess Bradford gets another lease on life.

  203. 203 Sb2bowl said at 12:22 PM on January 30th, 2017:

    Yea, that sucks big time.

I was at the game when Weaver had his knee bent backwards by the Packers (we also lost Kolb and Bradley during that game, neither were the same after that………) — it was the worst injury I’ve seen in person. At the time they were still showing replays of possible injuries on the big screen, and when the stadium saw his knee pop the wrong way, there was an audible gasp followed by silence.

I’m not saying Bridgewater will never play again, I hope he does. But an injury of that magnitude, and in this sport doesn’t bode well for his future.

  204. 204 Ark87 said at 1:56 PM on January 30th, 2017:

Yeah that was the most nightmarish season opener I’ve ever witnessed. Did Jamaal Jackson get hurt that game too? Go figure 2010 would turn out to be a magical season. Football is stupid.

  205. 205 Sb2bowl said at 2:01 PM on January 30th, 2017:

I’m not 100% sure, but I think he got hurt in the preseason after rehabbing all year when he got hurt against the Bronco’s (which was the turning point for the end of the McNabb era- we lost to Dallas back to back to close the year).
Again, I don’t remember 100%- I remember Bradley getting up and then falling over like a boxer who had been beaten for 10 rounds in a heavy weight fight. Never witnessed a football player wobble and fall like I did that day.
Amazing that Vick almost brought us back that game- and that game is specifically why I thought Clay Matthews was a little bitch for complaining about Barbre hitting him this year

  206. 206 Tumtum said at 2:38 PM on January 30th, 2017:

Bradly went back in that game unfortunately.

  207. 207 Sb2bowl said at 3:11 PM on January 30th, 2017:

I was so excited that we finally had a MLB that could play- after bringing Trotter back, and the cesspool of MLB’s that we had over the years, we had a young guy that could play and dressed great.

I remember that, can’t believe he went back in the game (Bradley). Even back then before I knew about CTS and things it seemed ridiculous to let him keep playing.

  210. 210 Sb2bowl said at 3:07 PM on January 30th, 2017:

Dude was a space cadet after that- never regained his form. Was that before or after he blew out his ACL?

  211. 211 ChoTime said at 4:34 PM on January 30th, 2017:

  212. 212 Bert's Bells said at 12:22 PM on January 30th, 2017:

On the bright side, Bradford can rack up some nice stats as he dink and dunks his way through another 8-8 campaign.

  214. 214 SteveH said at 3:00 PM on January 30th, 2017:

For me the craziest part of it all is it was a non-contact injury. This is the worst non-contact injury I’ve ever heard of. Anyone else know of a situation where someone was hurt as bad as this?
