Senior Bowl Talk – Tuesday

The Senior Bowl is officially underway. Today we had the weigh-ins and the first 2 practices. I’ve got notes posted on them.

Weigh-In

South – Day 1

North – Day 1

Now let’s talk about the Eagles. Who were they talking to?

DE Tanoh Kpassagnon
DE Dawuane Smoot
DE Derek Rivers

RB Matt Dayes

OC Evan Pocic

Understand that the Senior Bowl is now set up so that teams talk to every player in Mobile in a semi-formal setting during the evenings. But you can still tell something by who the scouts go to talk to after practices.

The big thing to take away from the above list is that the Eagles are interested in DEs. They have a couple of proven pass rushers in Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry, but the team needs young, cheap help at DE. Connor Barwin will be cut. Marcus Smith and Steven Means can’t be counted on. The Eagles need at least one DE to add to the mix.

I’m a big fan of Kpassagnon so I’d love to see that happen, but the other 2 guys are also quality prospects

I don’t know what is wrong with Les Bowen

Why would he post a pic of Joe Douglas and Dawk doing that when Jimmy Bama and I were doing the exact same thing, but we’re far sexier. Bad choice, Mr. Bowen.

I like the talent here in Mobile. Quite a few guys I think would make good Eagles. OL, DL, CBs and WRs. Feels good to not have to pay too much attention to QBs for the first time in a long, long time.

I really..really…hope Joe Douglas puts his stamp on this draft. We really need to draft and develop our own talent and not rely on veterans in the autumn of their careers more interested in the big payday than in getting to the big game. If we land cook. Then I hope we go best OL available in Rd2… possibly the center from Ohio state. The best CB in the 3rd . This is a deep draft at DB some good talent will be there in the 3rd.

I’m really not married to position in this draft. I think I’m really most focused on getting some premium talent added wherever they can find it. This team really lacks the necessary dominant players you’d like.

agreed, we could use the help everywhere, and every position is upgradable (though we can leave QB alone)

I think we can get a starting center later in the draft if we do not think Semaulo is ready to take the reigns. We should use the “Pro Bowl” status of our current center Jason Kelce and trade him for a 4th round pick! That will free up 3.8 mil in cap space to fill other needs. I think DP wants maulers on the O-line who are very physical at the point of attack. HR should be able to find a taker for him. I want cap room to gain a starting WR & CB in FA. I am not advocating building thru FA, but there is no reason we can not gain 2 upgrades at those positions prior to the draft. This will allow us to go BPA throughout the draft. Ultimately if we can nail the draft and get a few key pieces in FA then I believe the Eagles will be poised to get to the playoffs next year while working towards a roster that will be contending for multiple championships in a few years.

Are you saying get a rookie that will be more ready to start than Semaulo, who has starting experience albeit not at Center?

  7. 7 Greg Tulino said at 11:44 PM on January 25th, 2017:

I think we can get a Center later in the draft that could be a starting center in the future. In the meantime if we do trade or cut Kelce we have to assume his replacement is already on the roster. Likely Semaulo.

The Eagles have tried repeatedly to find those hidden gems at WR and CB in Free Agency. They just never seem to do much once they get here. Not sure what the answer is as drafting doesn’t seem to work much better.

  9. 9 Buge Halls said at 7:38 AM on January 25th, 2017:

That’s why you stay away from the “hidden gems” and have to pay the money for the proven free agents.

  10. 10 ChoTime said at 8:26 AM on January 26th, 2017:

Diamonds in the rough are rare. So are free agents that live up to their contracts (original teams usually let them go for a reason, there is a bidding process: see “Winner’s Curse.”)

    Good players are rare, period.

I think you made a typo in the South team report Tommy, OJ Williams should be OJ Howard?

  12. 12 Insomniac said at 11:54 PM on January 24th, 2017:

A little disappointed that there weren’t more South team CB notes. Looking forward to your reports on Taywan Taylor, there wasn’t much tape of him playing against CBs of this caliber. I like him, Switzer and Zay Jones a lot so I hope they impress Joe D this week.

Yeah, when you can see the shoulder pad out before he hits the ground, that’s a pretty good indicator of holding!

Thats what Im talking about. You can sacrifice speed for excellent concentration, hands and route running. I dont agree with Zierlein, O thought je gpt seperation plenty of times.

I’d agree 100% on the DE need. Although I’d only count Graham as a sure(r) thing right now. Curry was a straight up thief last year.

  23. 23 Fufina said at 8:07 AM on January 25th, 2017:

Is it wrong that i really want Dawuane Smoot, just so i can listen to Merrill calling his sacks? It would be glorious.

the comment on ZJ where it says ‘quicker with the ball in his hands’…I’d imagine that’s such a great deceiving characteristic. That’s part of the formula that makes Sproles so great. Quickness after the catch. Hard to run those WR screens when there’s no quickness. It’ll be interesting to see who the Eagles find to help the WR’s.
    ……
Going back to some talk about team formula for success. NE is always viewed as Beli/Brady and offense(and rightfully so). However, their defense goes under the radar every single year. Overall defensive statistics(from footballdb.com) — NE was ranked 8th. Maybe team balance is a good formula for continued success…
