A Goode Role Player

Posted: March 9th, 2017 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 97 Comments »

Free agency doesn’t officially start until Thursday, but the Eagles made one move.

Per Adam Caplan, Good got $875K, with $50K guaranteed. That tells you that Goode has to earn a roster spot. No team wants to throw away money, but the Eagles would eat the guaranteed money if Goode had a terrible summer or if some rookie beat him out.

Goode has been a very good STer in the past. Last season he had a couple of amazingly dumb penalties that made me want to send him on a one-way trip to Mars. Luckily, the Eagles don’t let me fire frustrating players into space anymore (no has heard from Matt Schobel in a while have they?). Goode is the backup WLB. If the Eagles trade Mychal Kendricks (still waiting to see what happens there), Goode could get a chance to earn that job.

I have no problem with the Eagles bringing back Goode. He is a solid role player at a reasonable cost. I tend to like bringing back guys like that. There is no upside, but you know them and they know you. Stability helps on STs, just like offense and defense.

Re-singing Goode doesn’t mean the Eagles are done at LB. They could sign another cheap free agent or spend a mid to late round pick on someone. One player that I loved coming out of college is Sean Spence. He played for the Titans last year as a 3-4 ILB. I think he could handle the WLB spot in Jim Schwartz’s defense.

What’s going on at WR?

Kenny Stills re-signed in Miami, for $8M per year. Pierre Garcon is heading to SF.

Remember this from the other day?

There is talk tonight that Britt will sign with the Eagles on Thursday and that would be just fine with me. I wasn’t so keen on Britt a couple of months back, but watched tape of him and read about him and he grew on me. He’s no longer the punk playing for the Titans that underachieved and got into trouble. He’s matured and just had his best season. I wrote a post about Britt and the other key WRs about 6 weeks ago.

The key with Britt is that the Eagles would not add just him and look at him as some kind of savior. He’s not that level of player.

We don’t know what is going on with free agent receiver Alshon Jefferey and Terrelle Pryor, my top rated guys. Would the Eagles add one of them and Britt? That would be a lot of money, but would seriously upgrade the position.

Howie Roseman has talked about wanting to go young on offense. He could look at adding Robert Woods from Buffalo if he wants to go that route. Torrey Smith isn’t young at 28, but would certainly be affordable and can be a vertical threat.

The perfect addition is still Brandin Cooks. He is young, experienced and explosive. What’s up with him?

Okay, that’s sort of encouraging.

Say what? I have never heard of John Hendrix and have no idea how good his sources are. He could be dead on the money, or way off on this. It seems crazy to me that a team would turn down pick 18 for a player they want to trade. Then again, the Saints do some odd things. Maybe this all just a negotiating tactic to try to get the Eagles to give up pick 14. I don’t think that is going to happen, but it certainly can’t hurt to ask.

Cooks is a good player, but he’s hardly worth a king’s ransom. The Eagles should continue to talk to the Saints to see what can be worked out, but you absolutely don’t hand them a blank check. If Cooks was truly an elite player, he wouldn’t be available. He’s good. And he’s a terrific fit. Roseman is a good negotiator so I expect him to keep working on this to see what he can do.

*****

Anything else going on?

So which is it? If I had to guess, I’d go with Wilson. He covers the Texans and is well-connected with agents and sources. Werder is in Texas, but is more of a Cowboys expert. Bouye’s agent could be using him to drive up the Texans offer.

I would love to sign Bouye. He is a terrific corner. The big issue is cost. We’ll find out on Thursday if the Eagles are casually interested or really plan to make a run at the star CB.

Doesn’t sound like we’ll get Torrey Smith. There is a very, very strong likelihood Torrey Smith will sign with the Ravens according to JLC. In case you missed it…not a done deal though.

  2. 2 John Galt said at 12:54 AM on March 9th, 2017:

No reason to sign Britt and Smith, both are fairly old #2 guys. They need a younger guy or a Jeffrey to go with Britt.

  3. 3 Corry said at 6:53 AM on March 9th, 2017:

I disagree. Yeah they’re both fairly older #2 guys, they bring different skill sets. They’re both band-aids, but Smith is a speedster-take-top-off-the-defense guy where as Britt is…well I’m not sure what Britt is, but he isn’t a speed option.

Adam Schefter stated today that everyone is waiting on the Brandon Cooks domino to fall. Then the rest of the top WR’s will fall into place. If Eagles can get him for a 2nd, 4th and a player I can live with that. I can’t see us giving up a #1 pick. However, if we gave up #14 for Cooks and got a 2nd round pick next year in return then I would have to seriously consider that. We are missing that 2nd round pick for 2018 in the trade with Browns to get CW. I would then view this trade as us getting Cooks as our 1st round pick this year and then recouping that 2nd rounder for next season.

Assuming we do not get Cooks and we do sign Kenny Britt I think we still need a backup LB, vet CB and another WR in free agency. Robert Woods is someone we could pick up at a reasonable cost that could be an upgrade to Nelson & DGB. I am excited to improve this roster in both FA and draft and contend to make the playoffs this year.

  6. 6 eagleyankfan said at 7:13 AM on March 9th, 2017:

It’s Adam Schefter’s job, I guess, but this makes not sense. 1 player needs a trade. Rest are FA’s. Who can turn a 2nd and 4th into an equal value for a FA WR? Nobody. Everybody isn’t waiting for Cooks — everybody is waiting for the deadline…

  7. 7 SteveH said at 1:33 AM on March 9th, 2017:

If we somehow got Cooks and Bouye that would be incredible, talent and youth at the 2 positions most in need.

Of course we’d have to offload a bunch of contracts to do it, but we’re already expected to do that anyhow.

  8. 8 midnitemud said at 2:22 AM on March 9th, 2017:

I know many Eagles fans don’t like the idea of going after Bouye simply based on past FA CB signings in recent years. I couldn’t disagree more with that thought. Every big-money FA comes with risk, but they can’t be scared to take those chances if they want to be competitive in the NFCE. This team can’t go into next season with Mills, Grymes, CJ, and some rookies. They must get a CB like Bouye, especially going against the likes of Dez, OBJ, Shepherd, and now Brandon Marshall.

    1. Again, put no weight on any tweets, these guys are making shit up.

    2. Goode is legitimately a better LB than Kendricks.

  10. 10 Media Mike said at 5:34 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Pat Kirwan was Sirius yesterday with a Saints fan (the guy’s name is JB is he’s my favorite caller) trying to talk some sense to him over Cooks. The two key parts were

    a) Kirwan insisted that nobody has legitimately offered a one for Cooks or he’d be traded already. He was explaining how Cook’s need to be mollified with a big deal soon to avoid possibly losing him was going to put a limit on the value the Saints could recoup for him.

    b) The caller was generally despondent at losing Cooks, who he likes more than any other WR on the team. Yes, that would include Michael Thomas for those of you insisting that the Saints are trying to move an inferior player.

He can simply “report” things that are assumed to be a done deal like that because he knows that certain suckers will think he’s actually got a source telling him stuff when he’s just playing the odds.

    Assumptions:
No Cooks. Yes Bennie. Mid-range CB (maybe the Denver kid).

Round 1 Pick 14: Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan (A)
Round 2 Pick 14 (IND): Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State (A-)
Round 3 Pick 15 (MINN): Antonio Garcia, OT, Troy (A)
Round 3 Pick 23 (NYG): Isaac Asiata, OG, Utah (B+)
Round 4 Pick 12: Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina (A-)
Round 4 Pick 15 (MINN): Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma (A)
Round 4 Pick 32 (COMP): Daeshon Hall, DE, Texas A&M (B+)
Round 5 Pick 11: Jarron Jones, DT, Notre Dame (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16 (MINN): Jessamen Dunker, OG, Tennessee State (C+)
Round 6 Pick 10: Tedric Thompson, SS, Colorado (C+)
Round 7 Pick 12: George Kittle, TE, Iowa (D+)

  25. 25 Media Mike said at 5:53 AM on March 9th, 2017:

General logic was to get starters early; I think I did that with Davis and Conley. I also think I have that at LG with Asiata. Zay Jones, Perine, Hall, and Jarron Jones should all play in rotation at WR/RB/DE/DT. Garcia and Dunker are here to be inactive members of the roster with an eye on taking greater roles in 2018. Thompson would hopefully provide a better backup at safety than Watkins does currently and Kittle can go into the mix as TE4 with an eye on taking over Celek’s role in 2018.

I’d also assume that the starting O-line for 2017 is Peters-Asiata-Seumalo-Brooks-Lane. 2018 will be Lane-Asiata-Seumalo-Brooks-Garcia.

Team rebuilding doesn’t = trading picks to get a guy of Cooks caliber. I’d like Cooks on the team, I guess, as it betters the position. If they can draft better(which is why they went and hired a draft/evaluator guru) they can improve more than 1 spot with the picks(rumored) to be needed in the trade for Cooks. Just throwing my opinion out there – solely based on what appears to be HR view of building a team for the future….usually when I throw something out there, its like a boomerang and comes back to hit me…

  34. 34 D3FB said at 8:56 AM on March 9th, 2017:

  36. 36 Corry said at 8:00 AM on March 9th, 2017:

I like the Britt signing if/when it becomes official. We still need someone to stretch the field though, otherwise, it’ll be a new year with the same problems in the passing game.

  37. 37 Patrick said at 8:20 AM on March 9th, 2017:

To be fair, it would be a pretty big help to add someone who can both play on the outside and actually play in the NFL. Catching the ball and being a RZ target also a plus.

JMatt can play in the NFL, but not on the outside. All our other WRs currently on the roster just cant play in the NFL. Even JMatt cant really catch the ball and isn’t really a good RZ target despite his size.

It’ll come down to money, but Britt looks like a decent signing to help Wentz grow, and is still young enough that hell be here in the first couple of years we should compete for the title with Wentz, if Britt(and Wentz) works out that is. Hopefully we’ll have assembled a team ready to challenge in a couple of years, by then Britt is still early thirties, we’ve seen recently that WRs can still put up numbers at that age, especially with Britt not being reliant on speed. Cant teach running a 4.3 but you cant reach being 6’3, 230 either.

  38. 38 Corry said at 8:26 AM on March 9th, 2017:

I don’t mean to diminish what Britt’s signing means for the wide receiver corps(e) in general. He’s much better than what we’re currently working with (assuming he continues to play well), but we already have a lot of guys who are good in the short to intermediate area. I think a complimentary deep threat is still required.

  39. 39 Patrick said at 8:33 AM on March 9th, 2017:

I agree, but the argument could be reversed and if we had signed, say DeSean Jackson, we’d still need another WR who had reliable hands and works the short and intermediate area.

We pretty much have to accept that JMatt is a Slot WR. A very good one, albeit with drop issues and without the ability to make the big catch, but a slot WR. Valuable in todays game, but still the 3rd WR on the field. I cant take another year of DGB and Ags as our feared 1-2 punch. And by feared, I mean by Eagles fans not opponents.

  40. 40 Fufina said at 8:23 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Britt has a decent pace, and will punish a lot of CB’s on a vertical route if the safety is not giving good support, and that’s what your really need. A deep threat like DeSean is nice because they push the safeties back 5-10 yards, but honestly that is not needed to open up a defence.

What you need is a WR who demands the free safeties attention if you run a fade/post/corner. That means he cannot cheat down into the box as much in the run game and means he cannot try and rob some of the intermediate routes for other guys running underneath. Last year lacked that, and once teams started squeezing the middle of the field things got hard for our WR’s and Wentz. Britt does enough to help elevate that.

  41. 41 BobSmith77 said at 8:15 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Of course 78% of fans on the WIP poll saying that signing Britt is insufficient in FA at WR. Less than shocking.

I’m ok with him but still need so some speed. Sign at least one starting CB and try to find some mid-tier value guys.

  42. 42 Patrick said at 8:23 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Seems like theres always good opportunities to find some speedy WRs with talent who can play outside, in the 2nd/3rd round of the draft. Same with RBs, theres some good players usually available in the middle rounds.

Maybe CB in the first, RB/WR in the next rounds?

  43. 43 BobSmith77 said at 8:26 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Mayock was on while I was at the gym. He said the same thing about their desperate need for speed but being able to find that in the draft.

He was mixed on the Britt signing. Said he was a solid WR but not a No. 1. Said the Eagles really need some veteran leadership at the position but readily admitted he didn’t know Britt personally or was in a position to say if Britt was a leader or not.

Always appreciated Mayock for that reason in particular. Watches a lot of game tape, gives his opinion, and is pretty clear though on what he doesn’t know/hasn’t look at yet. Also low-key and not prone to hyperbole.

  44. 44 Patrick said at 8:44 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Seems like the only guy available with that No. 1 potential is Jeffery who’ll get PAID or Pryor who’ll get less but also comes with bigger risk. I can see why Howie is hesitant with that, cap situation in mind. Not like Alshon doesn’t have some glaring red flags too.

I can see the logic in getting a somewhat proven commodity in Britt and trying to find the No. 1 in the draft. Corey Davis being the obvious combination of No. 1 potential and speed, but theres others deeper without the size and talent.

I just want to see us add some talent. Cant really see us competing next year, just get the team on the right track around Wentz so we’re ready to really compete in 2019 and later on if Wentz is the real deal. I’d hate to see another McNabb situation where we waste a QB with talent because of thrash(literally James Thrash) at WR and TE.

  45. 45 BobSmith77 said at 8:34 AM on March 9th, 2017:

We desperately need 2 starting caliber CBs, but i’m super scared of spending big in FA for one, since we seem to fail miserably at it. Then again, we cant draft good ones either.

Wonder if Bradley Roby is on the trade block.

  50. 50 A_T_G said at 8:41 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Big picture though, how much did failing with Maxwell and Asomyitshardtospell hurt us long term, compared to how much succeeding would help? If we haven’t developed the talent ourselves (we haven’t) then we need to keep rolling the dice until we fill the holes. Meanwhile, draft and develop to end the cycle.

  51. 51 Patrick said at 8:45 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Do we have the cap to roll the dice again though? But I agree, we need someone who can actually cover at CB. No disrespect to the walking finger wag.

  52. 52 Fufina said at 8:47 AM on March 9th, 2017:

This is absolutely my perspective on this. We need 2 starting CB’s, going into the draft needing 2 starters at a position is madness, so we need to sign a starting tier CB, and i would rather swing for the fences than trying to bunt (waves at Williams/Fletcher/Carroll/McKelvin).

  53. 53 Patrick said at 8:51 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Bouye is only 25 too. If you’re splashing in FA, thats a great age. 6 year deal and the player will barely be in his thirties and on the decline.

  54. 54 Fufina said at 8:39 AM on March 9th, 2017:

We can absolutely afford him. We have cuts/trades/waives coming for Mathews/Kendricks/Barwin.

Even if we didn’t signing him to a 5 year $65mil deal probably only has a $5mil 2017 cap hit at most, meaning it really is not a problem to squeeze under the cap.

I am more comfortable spending money on Bouye as a potentially star defender than on Jeffrey/Pryor, even if you believe that they will be just as successful on offense. CB is a position that needs to get it right every down. Mistakes every 4th or 5th or 10th play means the whole defense sucks. WR seems more forgiving to growing pains and a shotgun approach to acquiring talent.

Welp that’s a reverse. Kenny Britt is signing with the Browns.

Patriots may be trading Malcolm butler for Cooks

I’d be surprised. Seems more like Saints trying to talk up the market.

    apparently 7 million

  82. 82 scratcherk said at 10:27 AM on March 9th, 2017:

    gotta trade him if anything

  83. 83 Steve Smegal said at 10:28 AM on March 9th, 2017:

Just looked at the list of teams that might consider him as a one year bridge. Only the Jets or Browns make any sense. Think we’re stuck with him.

Schefter reporting Torrey Smith to Philly. 3 year, $15M. There’s your deep threat.

I like it. Upside potential – SF was not a healthy environment – and a reasonable price tag.

Feels like Cooks chances are done. Smith would be a guy to play opposite.

Yes, sad but true. Here’s hope that Eagles will still be able to either end up with Pryor or Jefferey.

  92. 92 scratcherk said at 11:56 AM on March 9th, 2017:

I’ll be happy with Jeffery now

  93. 93 scratcherk said at 12:28 PM on March 9th, 2017:

Surprised theres not more discussion on here.

I think Torrey is the kind of signing I expected this year. Upgrade at a good price. I think we’ll mix in one premier signing — alshon or bouye. Then a bunch of discounted signings. Hope we can trade Chase.
