2017 Eagles Draft Guide – Day 3
Posted: April 29th, 2017 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 114 Comments »OVERVIEW
The Eagles focused on defense in the first 2 days. Expect some offensive playmakers today. There is a need for a RB and WR. It is possible the team could add a pair of RBs. TE could be a target if the right player is available.
The Eagles aren’t done on defense. They could add depth pieces up front, in the middle or on the back end.
Will there be any trades? Mychal Kendricks and Jason Kelce are potential pieces that could be moved.
RESOURCES
The picks:
1 – 14 – DE Derek Barnett
2 – 43 – CB Sidney Jones
3 – 99 – CB Rasul Douglas
4 -118
4 – 139
5 – 155
6 – 194
7 – 230
The needs:
RB
WR
S
DT
LB
RB is obvious. Ryan Mathews will be cut when he’s healthy enough to pass a physical. Darren Sproles is in his final year. The Eagles just moved Byron Marshall to WR so this position is pretty wide open. I would actually like the team to spend a couple of picks on RBs, or to draft one and target one as a primary UDFA. They need a couple of bodies to add to the mix.
WR is set for 2017, but Alshon Jeffery is here on a 1-year deal. Jordan Matthews is in a contract year. Nelson Agholor and DGB are both question marks for the future. As Howie Roseman has pointed out, you want to draft WRs a year early. They don’t tend to play well as rookies. If you need someone for 2018, you draft that guy in 2017. Things could change with Jeffery and Matthews and you could see Agholor and DGB play much better. Again…you can’t count on these things.
Rodney McLeod and Malcolm Jenkins give the team a good FS/SS combo, but as we saw last year, there is a need for a good 3rd Safety. Jaylen Watkins had his best season, but was still erratic. It would be good to bring in competiton for him at the very least. The Eagles could add a S as early as the 1st round or wait to the bottom of the draft.
DT should be good with Tim Jernigan on board and Beau Allen returning in September. But both are projected to be free agents after that. Destiny Vaeao showed promise last year and it will be interesting to see if Aziz Shittu can take a big step forward. Still, this is an area where the Eagles would like to add a player.

Do visits and workouts matter? Heck yes. The Eagles met with Carson Wentz multiple times last year. They brought in Wendell Smallwood and Alex McCalister so this isn’t all about 1st round picks either. I won’t go through all the Chip Kelly picks, but the Eagles had plenty of those picks either come to Philly or get worked out by an Eagles coach on campus. This stuff definitely matters.
One key point…not every visit or workout gets leaked before the draft. Always keep that in mind.

The Eagles want to add a vertical receiver in the draft. There aren’t many of those guys left so they may go that direction with the first pick. Chad Hansen only ran 4.53 at the Combine. He was down at 4.47 at his Pro Day and shows plenty of speed on game tape.
Malone has a great combination of size and speed. He’s an under the radar prospect, but has very good potential.
The Eagles brought Shelton Gibson to Philly for a visit. He averaged 23 yards a catch for his career and is an outstanding KOR. He lacks ideal size and isn’t a volume receiver, but he can stretch a defense and make big plays. Plus, they seem to like WV players.
I did not list DeDe Westbrook. The Eagles have not openly checked him out in this process. There are some character questions with him and they may feel that he’s not worth the trouble. The fact he’s still on the board in the 4th round after having a great season and running 4.39 tells you teams have some serious concerns.
The Eagles don’t have to grab a RB in the 4th, but it would make some sense. Jones is explosive and that’s something the offense could use. Gallman isn’t explosive, but is an underrated player who I think can start in the NFL.
The Eagles don’t need a DT here, but Godchaux would be a great scheme fit and Glasgow is just a darn good player.
More CBs? Kazee could play the slot and would give you a lot of depth. King could play CB, S or in the slot. Plus, he’s got some KOR experience. He would be valuable because of that versatility.
I could be overlooking TE and LB as potential spots. I’m just thinking WR is the priority position in the 4th. There is better depth at RB.

WR Carlos Henderson
TE George Kittle
DT Jarron Jones
DT Davon Godchaux
DT Patrick Gamble
LB Anthony Walker
S John Johnson
S Tedric Thompson
CB Damontae Kazee
CB Cam Sutton
CB Corn Elder
Please avoid these players
S Justin Evans – hate his tackling
CB Ahkello Witherspoon – hate his tackling
C Jon Toth – don’t like him until late in the draft
All QBs – they stink
RB D’Onta Freeman – love his size/speed, but not consistently a physical runner
***
Ideal scenario for the rest of the draft (assuming stay put)
2 – CB Cordrea Tankersley – Clemson
3 – WR Carlos Henderson – Louisiana Tech
4 – RB Kareem Hunt – Toledo
4 – CB Damontae Kazee – SDSU
5 – S John Johnson – Boston College
6 – DT Jarron Jones – Notre Dame
7 – LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin – Tennessee
I think Tankersley is the kind of CB that Jim Schwartz would love. Confident kid with outstanding ball skills. Can press and play man. Good size-speed numbers and has the potential to get a lot better.
Henderson is the kind of speedy receiver the Eagles would like to add. He can go deep, but also has great RAC skills. He is dangerous when the ball is in his hands. Also a good returner.
Hunt is my favorite RB. He isn’t an elite talent, but can be a starter and good back in the NFL.
Kazee is a bit small, but has great ball skills and he will hit and tackle. Can play in the slot or outside.
Johnson is a former CB who can play the slot, in the box or back deep. Good athlete who lacks top speed or he’d be higher rated.
Jones is an uderachiever, but is 6-6, 316 and has dominant flashes. Watch him vs Miami. Just destroyed the Canes in that game. In the right scheme and with the right coaching, he could be a force.
JRM is the poor man’s Reuben Foster. Talented player and big hitter, but has some medical questions. Nowhere close to as good as Foster obviously, but a talented player who could play MLB or WLB in the 4-3.
_
I think they’ll wait until 2nd pick in Rd 4 to grab a RB and go WR or another CB with first pick. Wild-card could be TE.
Think, or hope? 😉
Or G.
Couple of good guards: Dorian Johnson, Isaac Asiata, Nico Siragusa. Mayock reported that Johnson is dropping due to a medical condition with his liver.
I saw but I love Johnson and Asiata
ok I missed it looking at above who is Patrick Robinson (CB on the team), where did we get him and is he any good? Like better than Carroll?
Former 1st round pick – has been a bust, but has managed to bounce around the league. He was decent in 2015 as a slot corner, but was awful last year with the Colts.
yikes, but he’s first in depth chart. I guess that’s why we are drafting corners.
Robinson was pick 32 in 1st round by NO about 7 years ago. Up and down with NO, better toward end. With SDG in 2015, played really well. Hurt most of last year. A guy who’s better at nickel but can be serviceable outside.
Opening the drafts 4th round with B-West and B-Dawk, can’t go wrong with that.
Can we draft their 22-year old selves with our two 4th round picks?
I mean, current age Dawk still deserves a roster spot over DGB right?
Dude looks like he can still play!
Cowboys better not send Pearson out again, Dawk about to hit him with an RKO out of nowhere.
Vince Biegel, Jaleel Johnson off board to Packers and Vikings
there goes perine
Ugh was hoping for him even if he isn’t the best fit.
Worst possible case, now have to watch him bowl over eagles twice a year.
Man Media mike must be pissed. First Tomlinson to NYG and now Perine to the Skins
OFF TOPIC: i ordered a roomba off costco and it got shipped to an old address… do i have any recourse?
If we pick a WR, Agholor may have a future job in shipping and receiving? He’s a hard worker but don’t ship anything fragile.
darn there goes josh reynolds
Get Mack or Ford or Hansen or King
Mack here?
Mack Hollins WR UNC
what a douche bag
These intros before every pick are just brutal
https://twitter.com/Astonia67/status/858361529783156736
Hollins is a sleeper prospect here with not a lot of college production to back him up. But he’s ranked this high because of what he can do when he’s on the field. At 6-4 and 221 pounds, Hollins is one of the biggest receivers in the class. But he also has phenomenal straightaway speed. He effortlessly blew by defenders throughout his career, evidenced by his 20 career touchdowns on just 71 receptions. Hollins was also a workhorse on special teams, a captain who played on every single unit.
I know
Hank Baskett v2?
Something like that.
WR5 who contributes on ST and with occasional reps as a big fast guy.
Has upside to improve because of physical skills and is a lunchpail guy.
He’s faster and leaner.
isnt htat the dude that Wentz was working out with
I believe so. I initially heard it was Switzer then heard Hollins.
oh god Jim Cramer was so painful. These introductions are awful.
that was the worst.
I love the Philly atmosphere and our guys showing up and representing, but god Cramer was egregious. Cramer couldn’t hit the right note by accident.
I still cannot process the pick because Cramer was so bad. Think i need to bleach my brain with alcohol to purge the memory.
It’s a shame too because the crowd is so fired up, then Cramer comes in and takes a dump all over everything. He’s a TV guy too, you’d think he would have some charisma for the camera. I love that even Mayock was shitting on him.
we want to know the GD pick. We don’t want to be led in a cheer (unless you played for the Eagles).
All the good stuff from the draft, and that video along with the Dallas WR will be all that is shown over the next week.
Not the Mack I was going for, but ok.
I don’t know anything about Mack, quick! someone more knowledgeable tell me what to think.
Future Hall of Famer.
Ike on the philadelphiaeagles.com coverage called him a faster Riley Cooper… which is a pretty apt comparison. He is going to hang around for 4-5 years as the 5th WR on game day and a key specials teamer, flashing some potential on his 10 snaps a game but basically being a blocker/special teamer.
His speed maybe gets him on the field more than that. If he can credibly stretch the field, the running game gets more enticing, and the middle gets less crowded.
Hopefully he gets to a point where he blocks like Riley Cooper.
Also hopefully, thats about the only trait he should pick up from Cooper.
Isn’t Torrey Smith the stretch-the-field guy at least this year?
I might not know about this WR, but im pretty sure we didn’t draft this kid with the intention of him being ready to contribute on offense come september of his rookie year.
..
Free agency is for next year, draft for the future, if a kid can contribute immediately, that’s gravy
I’m hoping that TS gets his mojo back and takes some reps away from both AJ and Matthews. Maybe that’s a reach, but I see him as being capable of good route-running, finding pockets and moving the chains. He is undoubtedly fastest WR, maybe fastest player on the roster, but his skills can keep him on the field for more than post routes. If Hollins gets any WR reps, going long seems to be his best option.
The good news: bye bye DBG.
Hollins worked out with Wentz. I love that we bent the rules like that.
Ok, having The Mountains introduce minny’s pick was kinda cool.
Stealing the whole Iceland clapping thing afterwards was awkward as fuck though.

groom him under Alshon & Groh
https://www.profootballfocu…
I thought the 40 time they showed (forget) was just ok. Like 4.5x.
For a guy that big it’s fast
You can see his speed on tape. He needs work on routes.
play speed is more important than 40 time. At that height he his probably a long strider too. I bet he eats up ground
4.53 at the combine. But he injured his leg running it.
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/0ap3000000789892/Mack-Hollins-injures-leg-during-40-yard-dash
Another site gives the low 40 time as 4.45, and a high of 4.62.
We also need LB. Kendricks’ future is up in the air, Hicks is quite injury prone and Bradham still has the legal issues hanging over him. We need better depth for sure and should draft one and then likely be active with LB in the UDFA market.
We did draft Joe Walker last year… more a backup probably, but he is depth.
Surprised to see JRM go this early
The Eagles have to draft a DT at some point unless they are that confident in Shittu feeling a rotation role in september, Beau allen and Jernigan won’t Both be back after this season so unless Shittu is better than I think, they will need to draft a DT who will play on a cheap rookie contract the next few years while we invest big money in our starting DTs.
..
Thrilled to have Sidney Jones, we aren’t winning a Super Bowl this year so it’s the perfect time to invest a little patience to have what would have arguably been a top 2 corner. Don’t know anything about the other corner but his size and playmaking numbers look interesting
.
Never even heard the name of the WR we just drafted
Didn’t care for it. ST aces in 6-7th round. We could’ve gotten a very good RB there or a different WR. But maybe Ill eat crow…
I don’t know enough to be able to like him or not. But I was hoping that if we did go WR it would be a guy who difers stylistically from the type of WR we already have. I was hoping for a route running technician, or a smaller WR who wins on quickness. But whatever, hopefully he growns into a nice eagle
Traded up…
Probably for a RB in front of Packers
Seems kinda silly to do that beforehand when they can just trade ahead of us now lol. I bet they won’t though. Would be great if it involved Kendricks
Colts too
Hopefully Joe Douglas plucks at least 1 eventual starter out of day 3
Ok the astronaut was cool
Trade up… wonder who we’re targeting.
Gimme Wayne Gallman, Marlon Mack, Blair Brown or Anthony Walker
Fuck this pick I’m out.
oh boy..is it that bad?
Eagles trade up
ESPN listing DE as one of our biggest needs? at this poïnt DT and LB are bigger front 7 needs than DE
Pumphrey
Darren Sproles replacement?
Another Tiny RB?
hm ok.
what did we spend to trade up
oh apparently a 7th
Sproles Replacement….hmmm thought we would’ve taken him later. apparently cowgirls were targeting him
Was hoping for a RB with some size and power
yeah I was hoping for Marlon Mack or Wayne Gallman. I liked what I saw from Pomphrey in the Senior bowl and at the combine …runs hard for a small guy and should gain some weight when he gets on an NFL nutrition and strength program
God this franchise blows. I’m tired of the small guys.
So we picked up a #4-#5 WR/ST Ace and potential Darren Sproles replacement today.
Oh snap Cowboys dude talking mad smack about the Birds, the rivalry is real haha.
Now I’m really pissed
Pissed off or on?
I’m pissed off and the Eagles just took a piss on our heads and will tell us it’s just rain
I haven’t watched any of him. Ill give my opinion later tonight. Its gonna be ok
I expect they will hit RB again in the 5th or 6th. Pumphrey i think is a pretty fun risk to take. He is a special player and sometimes those really small backs are just so hard to match up and handle.
If he didn’t have the kind of workload he had in college i would think it would be impossible to project him surviving in the NFL… but with a more limited work load he may be able to hold up.
He’s 170. This is the NFL not the Mountain West. Asante would tackle this dude like he’s BDawk
Well ofc, but would 20lb’s make any real difference to the outcome? If you are getting a clean tackle on him he is going to be stopped at 190 or 170. The question for me is if he can physically take NFL hits at that size.
wow, cowboys have small fast slot receivers galore now…. need to get corn elder now. NEED
This sucks. Liked Switzer
Pumphrey? Really?
Wow that tattoo is awful lol.
well, he was fun to watch and follow just cause he is 176 pounds, such an oddity at runningback. Cant imagine a better mentor for him than Sproles.
Is this a kid who will really be used as a SPROLES type RB? Or is he a RB that will be used as more of a quick slot WR/ST Player?
So we moved our 7th? That leaves us with a 5th and 6th right?
Yep. Interested that they traded up – they must have been pretty sure he was on someones radar.
maybe kendricks is on his way out for a 7th?
They can’t do that. We need LB s. 7th wasn’t much different than UDFA.
I assume part of it would be dumping his contract. underwhelming recent play + not living up to his contract = probably isn’t worth more than a 7th, or trading him to move up in the 6th. Maybe include stipulation for a future conditional pick depending on the value the team who trades gets out of him. Doubt he has more valhe than that
Worth it to get off his guaranteed money this year, allowing either another vet signing or just rolling it over for next year. Don’t keep Kendricks if you don’t think he fits in the scheme and will be just cutting him next year.
Damn i liked Sean Harlow as a 5th round target
Big Joe Hit on his 5th rd pick last year with Jordan Howard…maybe he repeats that magic this year
I think we need a RB with some size. Maybe Elijah Hood in round 6?
new post is up guys
