2017 Eagles Draft Guide – Day 2
Posted: April 28th, 2017 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 317 Comments »OVERVIEW
The Eagles drafted DE Derek Barnett in the 1st round. They will head into Day 2 looking to add a CB and RB, but aren’t locked in on those positions. They will let the board come to them and take the best player rather than forcing the issue. Because this draft is loaded at CB and RB, there is a chance the best players could be at those positions.
RESOURCES
The picks:
1 – 14 – DE Derek Barnett
2 – 43
3 – 99
4 -118
4 – 139
5 – 155
6 – 194
7 – 230
The needs:
CB
RB
WR
S
DT
LB
I think you might get the picture at this point. The Eagles need corners. I hope they choose 2 and it wouldn’t upset me for them to choose 3. The team has failed to develop good CBs in the last decade or so. They need stability at that point. Enough with trying out free agents from the rest of the league. The Eagles need corners who can play here for the next 5 years.
RB is obvious. Ryan Mathews will be cut when he’s healthy enough to pass a physical. Darren Sproles is in his final year. The Eagles just moved Byron Marshall to WR so this position is pretty wide open. I would actually like the team to spend a couple of picks on RBs, or to draft one and target one as a primary UDFA. They need a couple of bodies to add to the mix.
WR is set for 2017, but Alshon Jeffery is here on a 1-year deal. Jordan Matthews is in a contract year. Nelson Agholor and DGB are both question marks for the future. As Howie Roseman has pointed out, you want to draft WRs a year early. They don’t tend to play well as rookies. If you need someone for 2018, you draft that guy in 2017. Things could change with Jeffery and Matthews and you could see Agholor and DGB play much better. Again…you can’t count on these things.
Rodney McLeod and Malcolm Jenkins give the team a good FS/SS combo, but as we saw last year, there is a need for a good 3rd Safety. Jaylen Watkins had his best season, but was still erratic. It would be good to bring in competiton for him at the very least. The Eagles could add a S as early as the 1st round or wait to the bottom of the draft.
DT should be good with Tim Jernigan on board and Beau Allen returning in September. But both are projected to be free agents after that. Destiny Vaeao showed promise last year and it will be interesting to see if Aziz Shittu can take a big step forward. Still, this is an area where the Eagles would like to add a player.

Do visits and workouts matter? Heck yes. The Eagles met with Carson Wentz multiple times last year. They brought in Wendell Smallwood and Alex McCalister so this isn’t all about 1st round picks either. I won’t go through all the Chip Kelly picks, but the Eagles had plenty of those picks either come to Philly or get worked out by an Eagles coach on campus. This stuff definitely matters.
One key point…not every visit or workout gets leaked before the draft. Always keep that in mind.

RB Kareem Hunt
RB Aaron Jones
WR Taywan Taylor
WR Carlos Henderson
TE George Kittle
DT Jarron Jones
DT Davon Godchaux
DT Patrick Gamble
LB Anthony Walker
S John Johnson
S Tedric Thompson
CB Damontae Kazee
CB Cam Sutton
CB Corn Elder
Please avoid these players
S Justin Evans – hate his tackling
CB Ahkello Witherspoon – hate his tackling
C Jon Toth – don’t like him until late in the draft
All QBs – they stink
RB D’Onta Freeman – love his size/speed, but not consistently a physical runner
***
Ideal scenario for the rest of the draft (assuming stay put)
2 – CB Cordrea Tankersley – Clemson
3 – WR Carlos Henderson – Louisiana Tech
4 – RB Kareem Hunt – Toledo
4 – CB Damontae Kazee – SDSU
5 – S John Johnson – Boston College
6 – DT Jarron Jones – Notre Dame
7 – LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin – Tennessee
I think Tankersley is the kind of CB that Jim Schwartz would love. Confident kid with outstanding ball skills. Can press and play man. Good size-speed numbers and has the potential to get a lot better.
Henderson is the kind of speedy receiver the Eagles would like to add. He can go deep, but also has great RAC skills. He is dangerous when the ball is in his hands. Also a good returner.
Hunt is my favorite RB. He isn’t an elite talent, but can be a starter and good back in the NFL.
Kazee is a bit small, but has great ball skills and he will hit and tackle. Can play in the slot or outside.
Johnson is a former CB who can play the slot, in the box or back deep. Good athlete who lacks top speed or he’d be higher rated.
Jones is an uderachiever, but is 6-6, 316 and has dominant flashes. Watch him vs Miami. Just destroyed the Canes in that game. In the right scheme and with the right coaching, he could be a force.
JRM is the poor man’s Reuben Foster. Talented player and big hitter, but has some medical questions. Nowhere close to as good as Foster obviously, but a talented player who could play MLB or WLB in the 4-3.
***
I would really love the Eagles to add another pick or two so they could go heavy at some spots. Would be good to draft a pair of RBs. I would be open to taking 3 CBs. Get some players who can come in and win jobs or compete and push the players already on the roster.

Looks like somebody isn’t first today.
Too busy checking his sources. Couple of minutes and I’m sure we’ll all know who tonight’s picks will be.
Wife took the daughter to neighbor’s for dinner, I have my old-fashioned made, dinner on the plate and ready to feast on rounds 2 and 3 with my IB buddies. :thumbs up:
Nice. I may break one of these out. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/0cfeebf2c0b272cd32cc7017b5b9e41252dc3f99b087b32c1c9c7f1788ed68d1.jpg
my Spanish isn’t great, but don’t eat that…
That’s a funny warning hadn’t noticed
WR Taywan Taylor
WR Carlos Henderson
Why can’t we have both 🙁
Giants tried to trade up for for QB Patrick Mahomes and were “very disappointed” they weren’t able to get it done, per @AnitaMarks.
This has been a good draft.
I don’t know how to feel about this.
giants have put together an impressive roster, glad they couldnt get mahomes, i like the kid. glad andy got him, hes a great prospect for andy. to mold
Chances Budda available at 43? Shaheen? Trading back would be excruciating, but with Tommy’s list plenty of value in the 50’s
Corn made the All-Tommy team! It is meant to be.
id be down for a joe mixon and samaje perine reunion.
In honor of tonight’s harvest of the low hanging fruit passed over last night:

I had to hit it harder tonight
if we can get one of kamara cook or mixon in the 2nd, im good!!
if not them, kevin king.
after king i .. hmmm… Godwin
At that point, I think Jones has a better chance to be the long term solution.
zay jones?
im not a zay jones fan, his stats are manufactured IMO
Not sure if you are kidding, but I meant Sidney.
ahhhh… got cha
“CB Ahkello Witherspoon – hate his tackling
All QBs – they stink”
Tommy with some fire!
56 picks pass without an Eagle between 43 and 99. The team then makes 4 picks out of the next 56. That’s where this can really be turned into a great draft.
Lets root for as many OL and QBs as possible!!! WOOOOT.
fwiw, smoke?
https://twitter.com/LesBowen/status/858079740263006208
Love Jones, but wouldn’t touch him before round 3.
Depends on his medical. If your doctors look at his recent post operative scans and say its looking good and he should be fit moving forward then you run the pick to to podium.
Only if they’re convinced he can play this year.
boooooo
Commish is really popular :p
Per Sean Brace who was speaking with Spadaro a minute ago – official kibosh on Mixon from Spadaro.
From the live feed – bleedinggreennation
They probably know he will be taken before them. Easy PR points
We’re gonna fall 20 picks behind the live action aren’t we?
probably….
Your thoughts on Buda Baker at 43 sir?
He’s Lemarcus Joyner. I don’t know that he makes sense here right now.
Yeah. The argument I heard was special teams, slot CB for this year and groom him behind the S starters….
Give me Des King then
Good to know. Round?
Probably somewhere in our dead spot right now
King goes to GB. not looking good for us getting a CB
That wasn’t too surprising.
We can’t force it, but we really need a CB here. Hope that doesn’t start a run…
There’s going to be a run, question is will it be 3 , 4 or worse.
There are probably 3 more guys I’m comfortable with, so yeah, we’ll be sweating.
TRADE
And it has begun..
That’s definitely Cam Robinson to the Jags. Seahawks most likely wanted Kevin King.
good call.
Hoping for run of OL here
Only 2 worth it though.
And Cook and Mixon and QB
whos your RB of choice?
hunt/connor/dayes/gallman/jamal williams/deveon smith
thats a lot of choices.
Si.
Gun to my head Dayes or Gallman
D3FB, I greatly respect your opinion. What is it that you see in Deveon Smith that I’m missing?
He’s not a guy I love but he checks alot of boxes and worked with Duce at the Shrine game. I think he’s got a bit more in his locker than he showed at Michigan and worst case he can be your bruiser.
Thanks for the insight. I definitely agree with your last point, just don’t see him as a starter. Wouldn’t be the worst guy to pair with Smallwood, I guess.
All fourth or lower guys. Like em all, but there are no potential stars.
It’s RB. Build a backfield.
Build like the falcons
Lamp, Robinson, Feeney
Time for some Lamp love
Hey Seatttle, please take Lamp.
Nope… Malik McDowell
that’s good.
I’m ok with that, I thought they would take a CB.
Makes me happy. Hope he flames out.
Kizer?
That seems likely
That would be great.
Would make a lot of sense.
OK but if it’s not a CB or RB I think it’s PANIC TIME
what does your hookup say?
I’m done with that schtick, it was making too many people angry.
Pretty amazing how leading up to the draft, everyone only know 3 letters, BPA.
Now that the drafts is underway, people start panicking when we dont fill needs.
Cardinals trading up…
If it’s for Kizer, I assume they’re jumping ahead of the Chargers for him?
At this pace, the 2nd round will be over in about 90 minutes, but we won’t know the choices for 3 hours.
Damn. I wanted king.
CB run? Go cb now take whatever rb is available at 99?
Not necessarily., Good Rbs in 4th too
hm ok
After a night of looking like this
https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/811200811049058304/C_ejsvdN_400x400.jpg
I assume Bruce Arians demanded to have a QB of the future.
Baker
Good Bears needed a CB.
Don’t see a lot of teams between here and 43 looking for a RB. Maybe Cincinnati, but that’s about it. If we really wanted Cook or Mixon, I think at least one will be there.
Please no. 🙁
Spadaro already nixed Mixon officially to Sean Grace.
good. Fingers crossed on Cook. Great value in 2nd round.
i see them getting Cook if there all day long.
Jets maybe?
Guys if you want a live lead that will get info in much quicker – bleedinggreennation has a live feed.
Bills trade up coming next – they are taking a WR. Zay
ill savor it
Can you not spoil the picks?
Yep. Only 1.
Thanks, appreciate it.
Do you have a link? Thanks.

Mattieu and Baker on same team. Arizona’s collecting Wolverine wannabes.
Zay
QBs plz
wow really spamming the commercials….
It sucks when ESPN and NFL Network both go to commercial at the same time. I like to pause one channel as it goes to commercial and watch the other.
same here
I reallllllly liked Zay Jones, hope he has a good career.
Playing opposite of Sammy will help him out (as long as Sammy stays healthy).
“But they don’t have a QB” – Media Mike
i think i’d prefer CB over RB here
tho, cook is tempting… tough choice..
If you want a starter on the outside, it needs to come at 43 (or we need to do something to move back up in the 3rd).
LAMP
MOAR OL
Roids Merriman.
I’d be shocked if Howie could find a trading partner for Kelce or Kendricks during the draft.
getting back on schedule here!
Klecko!
I went downstairs, cleaned my grill, put it back in the garage, did all my dishes, took a piss…
And didn’t miss a single pick.
Jets going safety… Marcus Maye
Unless the Eagles can get another 3rd, I don’t want to see a trade back. And I don’t believe they can even get a 3rd at this point.
They’d have to go real far back in the second. We could also move back a bit and swap 3rds
did the jets just draft two safeties with the first two picks?
Terrible decisions by a terrible team!
TUrrible
I guess pure BPA really isn’t such a great idea.
Ask the Sixers
Yes. Interesting use of resources.
And they have a first rounder on the roster, Pryor. Guess he’s done.
Great Wrs in that division. Look at who Buffalo drafted – WR, WR. Pats have Cooks now along with Mitchell… plus the TEs… Miami yada yada….makes sense actually
why are the jets always drafting defense?
2 safeties back to back?
Fish, get in the boat!
Hmm, Jets going with 3 safeties?
they’re going with the less heralded 1-1-9 defense.
Wave of the future.
Pryor on the trade block
Looks like we are going to have some good options at this spot. RB or CB?
Yup.
Honestly, I’m down with either.
Waiting on the Panthers pick before I can decide. I’m pro CB but that might change if Awuzie is off the board,
Trust the team at this point.
I trust Joey D…as if I have choice,
Perhaps they see one of the two as a corner instead? Or just want to stay in heavy nickle always with a 4-2-5?
Curtis Samuel Panthers
As we get close to picking tell me who we want.
Imma laugh we pick up someone that’s not a CB or RB.
That’s usually how this goes…
it better be a corner, we can get by with a merc at RB and some young blood, we need to start investing in corners now
loading up on the jackknife weapons
Board has broken so well for us. Let’s trade back a few
Wow. Carolina got fast.
What??? Panther’s selection has me scratching my head. Samuel & McCaffrey really similar players.
The Panthers have taken hybrid RBs and WRs back to back.
Minnesota just jumped us
How funny would it be if it’s for a QB?
I think Cook
Decision just got easier
Some of you are not going to be happy with vikings pick.
I’m OK with it
I’m thrilled with it
Very happy about it.
Thank goodness.
Good CBs sitting here now
That’s what I figured
Philly crowd isnt happy.
They’re wrong. I’d rather have one of the CBs then either Cook or Mixon.
they are never happy lol
Please no to Mixon
Haha did Philly boo coz they dont like Cook or they boooed coz they wanted him lol
Think they wanted him.
ah well. trade down?
Just don’t draft f**king Mixon please
Agreed. I bet we do though
seriously. Vikings moved up afraid eagles would take Cook. Just no Mixon.
Damn. Wanted Cook
Les Bowen thinks we go Sidney Jones. Not my preference, but what does everyone think? I’d prefer Tankersley or Wilson.
With what is out there right now, no.
In the second? No way. In the third? Sure take a flier.
I have no idea where he’s getting his info. Seemed off to me too.
i stopped following him on twitter. too much politics and guessing about eagles.
Love Jones upside, but that injury scares me to death. Might never be the same and even if he does make it back, might not be this season.
rather Jones than Mixon.
Mayock: Cook slipped purely on of the field stuff. Plus fumbles. Plus shoulders. But other than that, no issues at all.
He’ll have no issues with staying out of trouble in Minnesota that’s for sure.
Jimmy tooting his own horn again.
Whoa, for realz?
Starting to feel what CrackSammich was talkin about. Time for a wtf wild card.
I laughed at as much as when authority figures call him Bubbles in Trailer Park Boys.
OK call the ball, if picking whom do you want right now?
Iwuzie.
chidobe
Tankersley if they want mainly press. Is he a zone CB? ESPN says
Awuzie shows man-to-man limitations on tape, but he’s an explosive athlete who tested well at the combine and shows above-average instincts in zone. He’s also outstanding in run support and should cover kicks in the NFL. — Steve Muench
Boooo Mortenson lol
Another safety
Remember when that one guy said there would be a run on safeties? Neither do I.
Lol. I’ve been laughing about that too.
What happened to the CB run I predicted lmao? Trades helped.
DBs, CBs, and safeties? Same thing.
trade?
It would be worth it if they can grab another 3rd . . . but they’d have to move back too far methinks.
Owuzie? Jones?
beer #2
maybe it’s time for shot #1
It’s not that hard Howie. Just take the CB and put the Joe Mixon highlights away.
I’m happy
Very happy
Wow
How hurt is he?
Supposed to be available in October
TBD. A lot of smoke about good reports…
The main concern is that he wasn’t all that fast in the first place and his injury will probably rob some of his speed.
Young guys can recover.
It’s not a guarantee.
The surgeon and initial recovery team sent a note to all 32 teams saying surgery went exceptionally well, has already transitioned to a boot and regaining movement and they expect it to take 4-6 months for ‘recovery’. What that means in context of being football ready i have no idea, but 7-9 months is the normal type of total time needed to get back on the field from this type of injury if the surgery goes well.
Thanks
Another 20 year old with high upside
I’m not amused.
Agholor jersey’s? never thought I’d want to boo a widow before
Wish they could have moved down a bit and picked up a 4th round pick.
Joel Embiid
Saweeeeet!!!
OK OK OK! I LIEK I LIKE DONT GET CUTE ILIKE IT
Health . . . . would’ve loved him in the 1st if he hadn’t hurt his achilles. Wow.
SYDNEY FREAKING JONESSSSS
GO EALGESSSS
FLY EAGLES FLYYYYYYY
LOVE IT
That’s the guy I wanted! That never happens!
Look out Corn Elder, here we come.
I’ll say it, if he recovers and fully, and for good, we got 2 first rounders, 2 arguably top in this draft at 2 of the biggest need positions.
Wow.
So we need to draft another one now since Jones will/should be redshirting. Think we can trade up for Tankersly?
Not so fast there…
Are we going to the Super Bowl this year? If not don’t force anything and take BPA
Exactly. I love the kid too. So I’m biased.
99, 118 and a one of our 4s next year only gets us back to the late 70s
Hey Dallas, we got 2 first round picks
Peters came back from a double achilles.
In the same year!
I forgot about that. That was shit.
and DJ just compared Jones to Big Play Slay.
Pretty certain at this point Sidney Jones will cover like Slay, but beat Marcus Peters in interceptions every year.
to be fair, If Peters was born in ancient times, he’d wipe the floor with Achilles and we’d be calling it the Peters tendon. The man is a modern mythological hero blessed by the gods
You sir have won the internets!
Thing with achilles is how it tears and the secondary damage that has been done with it. If it the surgery goes well and there is limited secondary damage to the area then you can be pretty confident he can get fully healthy.
However taking the Peters example he had surgery in March/April and he was not fit until end of december and missed the entire year.
Cunningham, however, was never the same 🙁
Really, really need to double up at CB now. I love Jones, but no guarantee he’s healthy this season.
Don’t care if we get torched this year. If we got a No. 1 CB long term, small price to pay
Agreed. If we go 9-7 rather than 11-5 due to poor CB play when we have our long term solution is that really an issue? gets us better picks and Wentz and the defence can still develop plenty on their own with limited CB play.
Happy with this pick. No. 1 CB upside and would have been an obvious target at 14
Ill say he was by far my favorite corner before the injury. If/when he comes back, slam dunk pick.
Jones has to add like 10 pounds to his frame as well as recover his speed from his achilles injury. Risky pick but great reward.
Probably a dumb question, but let’s say we don’t get a RB or a solid CB in this draft. Is it possible to still pick up someone off the street if we have to do that?
There are a lot of quality RB’s lower down in this draft. Lot of workhorses, but only one Thoroughbred left. Too bad Mixon’s such a piece of work.
Damn autocorrect. It changed your spelling of shit.
lol
What about CB? That seems like it could spell trouble if we have to go with a rookie and Mills on opening day
Posted already I think we must double up on CB now. I don’t want them to force it, but there are still a lot of CBs I like. Not sure who’ll be available @ 3 or 4 though. Ask D3FB.
Hasn’t a rookie and Mills been the plan since day 3 of free agency?
If they fly and we don’t get another one we like I think they’ll look for somebody who has starter experience and just got shoved down a depth chart
Some medical licences better get pulled if they’re wrong about this.
From Les, “Jones’ tear was higher up on calf, higher is better. Had minimally invasive procedure, which won’t shorten healing. will guard vs infection”
Think Fuller is still available?
Our defense backfield is going to be stellar next year when Sidney has a full year under his belt and Rowe coming off his 3rd season…
Are the patriots giving us Rowe back?
It was sarcasm;-)
i think we need to trade up in the 3rd. There is going to be a large drop off before we pick again. I’ll take 3 starters from this draft even if We have to give up some mid/late round picks.
If Mixon, Kamara, or a quality CB are there in the 3rd we need to pounce.
Got to late it play out for a while. Still a long way before we get to that point.
Agreed, but looking at it now that’s the likely scenario. I don’t want to regret getting another really good player for depth players
Statistically, moving up at this point doesn’t necessarily improve the odds of a starter, not over quantity.
I want Mixon and think he may continue to fall. His situation is outside statistics.
I think it’s pretty clear the team has already made a decision on Mixon.
Not necessarily, but probably.
I think Mixon will get taken in the 3rd/4th. Video is worse than a conviction.
56 picks to go… sigh.
So does anyone else think Joe Douglas’ influence on Howie is the reason we didn’t trade yet, which BTW I’m OK with.
looking at picks just before and after there were no trades, which tends to suggest there was no one desperate to move up to the spot. I am sure the Eagles would have been willing to move back 5-10 spots if the trade was available.
I honestly wouldn’t have minded trading back a bit, depending on what picks they could get. MOAR PICKS 🙂
Think howie tried and no takers.
Would you trade up/down with the man who robbed the Vikings blind?
Great point and I think it’s true
that is a weird looking dude on NFL network next to billick
I like Sidney even more now.

I said Sidney Jones was going in the 2nd and people said I was crazy. People think he wont ever be the same but that’s just not true.
“The good news for Sidney Jones is that he should fully recover and be able to accelerate as explosively and run as fast as ever, which will allow him to become the top-flight NFL cornerback many expect.”
The only issue is he is at higher risk for injuring the other achilles

Maybe the beer is kicking in, but amputee chick can get it.
shes like 12 dude.
well, then i said nothing and you can’t prove it.
there is so much both wrong and right about this post
So, we have MS II, Thurmond III, and now Jones IV? Next up, Johnny 5.
Wish we still had Thurmond. I thought he was good
he’s alive…
Pro: Not Joe Mixon
Con: Cant fucking walk right now
You weren’t Jones’ biggest fan before the injury either, were you?
The weight bugged the fuck out of me
Isn’t the same size as Trufant?
I don’t fully buy the 186.
Also
40: 4.38 vs 4.47
Shuttle:6.67 vs 7.02
3 Cone: 3.85 vs 4.26
Con: Also weighs as much as Insomniac right now.
you’re hurting Twitter with your reaction
we’ll just have to get one who can walk by trading up to the early 3rd
With what?
99, 118 and a 4 next year buys MAYBE buys you late 70s
force of goddamn will
It is Howie. He’s been known to trade shit for gold 🙂
I’d rather wait. Still good players there, even if it is gonna be a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong wait.

look D3FB, he can fly, who needs to walk
He’s light enough
Ouch
Bengals gonna Bengal.
There goes Mixon
Of course the Bengals took him
At least he’ll get accustomed to wearing stripes
Is the Bengals a good environment for him?
**snort**
Guess it depends on how you define ‘good’. Considering how many turds are on that team? Hell no.
hell no, Bengals have been doing their best 70’s raiders impression for a decade now
Bowser!
sha na na?
You guys think that we could trade like a 6th for Jeremy Hill?
Probably don’t have cap room…
Hoping to trade a player to move up
Not likely
Skins get Ryan Anderson
