Game Review – PS #3 – MIA at PHI – Defense

Posted: August 27th, 2017 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 93 Comments »

Boom or bust. That was the Miami offense on Thursday night. They scored 31 points, but only ran 52 plays and only gained 302 yards. Big plays were a big problem for the Eagles defense.

72-yard pass
69-yard pass for TD
32-yard pass
26-yard run
17-yard pass

That is 216 of the team’s 302 yards on just 5 of their 52 plays. Talk about a wild game. The defense was stifling at times and porous at others.

The Eagles did come up with 4 takeaways, including a pick-six by Mychal Kendricks. One of the other picks came in the end zone and prevented the Dolphins from scoring.

There were a couple of Red Zone TDs scored late in the 1st Qtr. Give Ajayi credit for fighting his way in on those plays, but the Eagles need to be better in those situations. Wasn’t one person to blame, but poor team defense. On the next RZ trip, Miami threw for a TD. They used a bunch set and there was confusion between Darby, McLeod and Mills. The TE was open for the short TD.

Honestly, I think it was good for the Eagles to be challenged by a team with good skill players. That will help them to be ready for the Skins on opening day.

Fletcher Cox – Unblockable at times. Drove the RG or C back to QB on multiple plays. Recovered fumble on opening drive. Flew into backfield on run, but could only get one hand on Ajayi and wasn’t able to get him down.

Brandon Graham –  DNP

Tim Jernigan – Offside penalty on first play. I’m sure that drove the coaches nuts. Stout vs the run. Got into the backfield a few times. No real standout moments.

Vinny Curry – RDE. Good showing. Got strip-sack on initial 3rd down. Good burst, but block attempt by LT was horrible. Just missed a 2nd sack when he got penetration with good inside move. Went hard inside on another pass play and flew into the backfield. Someone else hit the QB.

Derek Barnett – Started at LDE. Solid showing, but didn’t make the splash plays he did the first couple of weeks. Used speed and power moves to get some pressure. Helped to collapse pocket on Curry’s strick-sack. Got penetration on a couple of run plays. Once again showed great hustle in pursuit.

Chris Long – Backup LDE. Blew up run to his side and created TFL for Douglas. Almost got TFL in mid-2nd on run play. Great penetration, held RB to short gain. Another good performance.

Destiny Vaeao – DNP

Justin Hamilton – Backup DT. Looked athletic when he chased QB out of bounds in mid-2nd. Got TFL when he chased down run that went away from him. Continues to play well. Good combination of size, power and athleticism.

Elijah Qualls – Best game so far. Played with #2 and #3 D. Got penetration on multiple plays. Good quickness off the ball. Made nice play on 3rd/21. Started upfield, saw it was a draw and then came off block to make tackle. Got knocked to the ground a couple of times. OL are up higher than him and just shove him down. Got the best of LG #77 on a regular basis. Got half a sack in the early 3rd. Attacked outside shoulder of LG, then pushed him back into pocket, got QB. Power rush worked against multiple blockers. Tied with Means for most snaps played on D.

Gabe Wright – Backup DT. Had some good plays in the 4th. Quick off the ball. Disruptive. Looked athletic.

Steven Means – RDE. Another really good showing. No sacks, but got the best hit on a QB of any defender. Got pressure on a regular basis. Credited with TFL on run play. Having a great preseason.

Alex McCalister – LDE. Looked like he made mistake and got sealed by TE on 2nd Qtr run. Got half a sack in the early 3rd. Drove RT backward, then went to inside and got QB. Got TFL on run late in game. Play really made by others, but McCalister was there to finish off the RB. Good game. More physical than in other games. Wasn’t just flying off the edge.

Winston Craig – Played DT and DE. Good power rush at DE. Played hard, but no standout plays.

Nigel Bradham – Filled gap and stuffed RB on inside run. Active vs run all night. Filled on inside plays and hustled in pursuit on outside runs.

Jordan Hicks – DNP

Mychal Kendricks – Another strong game. Came close to getting strip-sack. Was tackling QB and ball came out. Turned out the QB threw it to RB’s feet as he was about to hit the ground. Picked off tipped pass in the mid-2nd and ran it back for a TD. Easy catch, but got to right spot and showed good awareness on the play. Had wide open path to end zone.

Najee Goode – Started at MLB. Tackled TE for no gain on opening play. Good hustle to get wide and then get the TE by the feet. Awkward vs inside runs as MLB. Came up, then moved back on one play. Didn’t look comfortable. Low moment came on outside run. Tried to tackle Ajayi with his shoulder. Embarrassingly bad play for veteran LB. Had to use his hands/arms there. Let RB get easy 1st down.

Joe Walker – Backup MLB. Came into the game late in 1st Qtr and got some snaps with starters. Mostly was with backups. Got TFL vs screen in late 2nd. Got out wide and made a strong tackle. Looked decisive and fast on that play. Gave up short catch to WR and then made solid tackle. Got fooled on run play and followed QB thinking it was bootleg. Blitzed up the middle in the early 4th and forced QB to throw bad pass, which was picked off. Love his effort. Tackles well. Needs to get better at diagnosing plays. Also must improve at shedding blocks.

Nate Gerry – Backup WLB. Showed good speed when he blitzed off the edge and threw off the timing on a screen. Looked athletic as he hustled over and tackled WR after short catch. MIA completed pass to WR over Gerry late in half. He jumped for the ball, but it was over him. Coaches might tell him to get more depth on that play in the future. Was already 10 yards downfield, but no one was directly in front of him so dropping back a bit more might have been the smart play.

Don Cherry – Made big play in the early 4th. Picked off a pass over the middle and almost ran it back for TD. Showed good hands on the play. Was in on one tackle.

Kamu Grugier-Hill – Hustled out wide and tackled RB after catch/run. KGH is a good athlete and you could see it on that play. Solid tackle as well. Covered RB on next play and was all over him.

Malcolm Jenkins  – Missed tackle on early run by Ajayi.

Rodney McLeod – Quiet game.

Corey Graham – #2 S. Physical hit took out RB who got into secondary.

Terrence Brooks – #2 S. Made one big mistake. Small, speedy WR caught short pass in the late 3rd. Brooks came up aggressively, but made a sloppy attempt and the WR got loose for long TD. Generally kept things in front of him and played well.

Tre Sullivan – #3 S. Quiet game.

Ronald Darby – Bad game. Missed tackle of Ajayi on first run. Got knocked back by stiff arm when he should have made easy tackle. Highlight play came on 2nd drive when he broke on ball and knocked it down with one arm. Would have preferred he try to catch the ball, but went for sure thing with PBU. Tackled Ajayi on the next run that came out his way. Beaten by Parker on deep ball. Darby ran with him, located ball and jumped, but missed by a couple of inches. Took a terrific pass and catch to beat him on that play. Did hustle in pursuit and tackle Parker inside the 5. Struggled with Landry’s route-running. Bit on fake and let get him open to the outside. Bit on double-move by Stills and was beaten deep. PI in the end zone. Almost made great play to knock the pass down, but did hit Stills. Good call.

Jalen Mills – Poor tackle attempt on Ajayi run to his side. Got decent hit on Goode, but not the RB. Needed to wrap-up. Kinda ducked on the play. Not good. Solid in coverage. Didn’t have throws come his way.

Patrick Robinson – Slot. Good tackle vs inside run. Had tight coverage on pass down sideline. There was some incidental contact and the receiver fell down. Showed good speed on that play. Seems to have found a home playing in the slot. More aggressive and more confident.

Jaylen Watkins – Played CB with #2 D. Picked off pass in the end zone. Looked like more miscommunication by DBs as 2 guys were on one receiver. Watkins made the easy pick and returned it out near midfield. Made solid tackle of RB on draw play where runner got outside.

Aaron Grymes – Played the slot, but was only on D for 9 snaps.

Rasul Douglas – Hustled upfield on run play and got TFL. Made a real good break on the ball late in the half. Wasn’t able to break up the pass, though. Had a chance for INT if he jumped to the inside, but stayed outside and played it safe. Missed tackle of WR on quick throw that turned into long TD. Brooks was more to blame, but Douglas had a chance to make the play. Speedy WR got behind him in late 3rd, but receiver couldn’t catch the ball. Had chance for INT in early 4th, but Cherry jumped in front of him and picked it off. Up and down showing. You can see his potential, but still has a long way to go.

CJ Smith – Got his hands on a slant pass in the mid-2nd and knocked the ball into the air. MK picked if off and ran it back for a score. Broke up pass on in-breaking route late in the game.

Ron Brooks – Played in the slot with backups. Was in for 15 snaps.

It was kind of dull. I guess it was better than Mayweather dancing around and not ever trying to initiate much contact through out the entire match.

Mayweather didn’t even go all out from a training perspective and is 11 years older.

If it had been prime career Mayweather and a bonus attached to a TKO/KO, Mayweather would have put him down by the 2nd round.

Kind of like of in high school washing the sprinters try keep up with us distance guys. They would be good for about 1/2 mile and hit a wall sometime in lap 3.

  33. 33 Donald Kalinowski said at 9:59 PM on August 27th, 2017:

I think Sammy is a decent QB and the Vikings got a pretty decent return on their trade. It’s a win-win on both sides. They’ve got a talented defense and a decent QB. It’s a shame Sam is going to 8th year in the league with a terrible OL and terrible WRs

With the one big cut…from 90 players to 53 in one fell swoop. There’s going to be lots of talented players cut due to cap restrictions and simply no room. I wonder what surprise cuts will happen, and if we’ll land anyone. Never a dull moment with Howie.

  51. 51 Guy Media said at 5:23 AM on August 28th, 2017:

The whole league is going to be scrambling looking at 1147 (37*31) players just about all at once. It’s going to be great! I’m also really excited that we can essentially play the 37(ish) players we’re going to cut anyway, so there is less risk that a guy who was going to play important snaps gets hurt in the game. I think it was a great move by the league.

  52. 52 Dave said at 12:23 PM on August 28th, 2017:

  55. 55 Ryan Rambo said at 8:13 AM on August 28th, 2017:

Bengals WLB Vontaze Burfict is facing a five-game suspension for an illegal hit on Chiefs FB Anthony Sherman earlier this preseason.
Burfict is appealing, but his chances of beating the suspension seem low considering his history of illegal hits. That history also explains why Burfict is facing a lengthy suspension rather than a one- or two-game ban. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Burfict’s appeal hearing will take place next week. Burfict has looked outstanding in preseason games after reporting to camp in the best shape of his life. He is the best player on a Bengals defense that will also be without top CB Adam Jones in Week 1 due to a one-game suspension.

  56. 56 phillychuck said at 9:15 AM on August 28th, 2017:

I saw the hit on video…why is that hit illegal? He knocked down a receiver within the 5-yard zone, and didn’t hit him in the head. I don’t like Burfict, but this seems unfair.

  57. 57 Ryan Rambo said at 11:36 AM on August 28th, 2017:

Yeah, i haven’t even seen the video. He’s just kinda made himself a target. I like him as a player, just needs to play more disciplined.

  58. 58 Tumtum said at 2:36 PM on August 28th, 2017:

It sort of boggles the mind. He is probably a touch slower than most teams would want, but he is a damn good player. Maybe he has a giant chip on his shoulder due to those physical limitations. Either way, he is playing the game a way that is dead and gone. Play right or don’t play. CTE is no joke.

  59. 59 Dave said at 12:20 PM on August 28th, 2017:

“Here is the wording from Article 7, Section a, part 2 where the league lists players who qualify as defenseless: A receiver running a pass route when the defender approaches from the side or behind. If the receiver becomes a blocker or assumes a blocking posture, he is no longer a defenseless player.

Sherman clearly meets the qualifications as someone who is running a pass route and Burfict pretty clearly approaches him from the side. Smith has already released the ball and Burfict (top right) isn’t thinking about anything other than putting Sherman in the ground.”

  60. 60 ChoTime said at 2:18 PM on August 28th, 2017:

He did hit him in the head? He was also defenseless?

  61. 61 since1961 said at 2:50 PM on August 28th, 2017:

From this angle it also appears he dropped his head so the top of his helmet hit the FB’s helmet or at least facemask.

  62. 62 ChoTime said at 4:44 PM on August 30th, 2017:

Yes, that’s what I meant. It does look like significant head-to-head contact.

  63. 63 D3FB said at 5:58 PM on August 28th, 2017:

It’s a shoulder into the chest.

Also if the league is going to start doing this then LB’s are fucked. If you can’t blow up the crosser most of these guys are in trouble.

  64. 64 Guy Media said at 6:30 PM on August 28th, 2017:

Because this isn’t “conduct detrimental”, I’d imagine whoever is watching the tape will rule in Burfict’s favor as “shoulder into the chest” isn’t the type of hit that they’re not looking at.

  65. 65 D3FB said at 7:41 PM on August 28th, 2017:

  68. 68 Bert's Bells said at 12:39 PM on August 28th, 2017:

Wild to drop that kind of hammer over practice.

The NFL wants teams to make pre-season interesting for fans, if starters face long suspensions on top of injury risk hard to see most clubs playing their marquee players at all.

In a strange way I would be happier about this if he had a big hit on Goode instead of a decent one. If you’re not even going to lay out your own guy, much less the running back…

  75. 75 Someguy77 said at 4:33 PM on August 28th, 2017:

I know McLeod had to play out of position last year and had some additional coverage responsibilities he normally wouldn’t have.

I just haven’t seen a player that is anything above average. He supposed to be a stout in the run support/tackling game but I haven’t seem him shine in the role either.

Strikes me at best as an ‘ok’ player at SS who is overpaid vs what he gives you in terms of production & benefits from kind of mediocre depth at the position right now around the league.

  76. 76 Dave said at 5:17 PM on August 28th, 2017:

“…had some additional coverage responsibilities he normally wouldn’t have.”

I think he had his hands full deciding if he should cover the deep balls thrown to Mills/McKelvin’s side or Carrolls side as they both seemed to rely on him covering the entire backside of the secondary.

Redskins NT Phil Taylor will miss the 2017 season with a quad injury.
The No. 21 overall pick of the 2011 draft was trying to come back after two years out of the league. He had reportedly been a “standout presence” in Redskins camp, and was poised to make the 53-man roster. Taylor will be 30 with a long and winding injury history when he hits free agency next spring.

Rick Lovato I guess. Don’t really get it, seems a needless risk, unless Lovato looks to be the guy for the next 10+ years.

Pederson, addressing team: From now on…we will only go for two.

    *polite clapping, some murmurs*

Pederson, continuing: And from now on…we will always go for it on fourth down.

*mostly concerned murmurs, but a few 4th-down analytics guys just completely losing their shit*

I’m actually kind of upset about the Dorenbos trade. Like…why?

He’s a guy it feels good to cheer. Unlike most pro athletes.

Lions signed QB Matthew Stafford to a five-year, $135 million extension through 2022.
Derek Carr lasted a little over two months as the league’s highest-paid quarterback. Stafford now holds that distinction, and he won’t sit at the top for long, either. Quarterbacks salaries are getting outrageous, and whoever is the next competent one up for a new deal immediately becomes the richest. This is good news for Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees, who are all going to get new deals sooner than later. Stafford is still just 29 and is coming off back-to-back strong seasons as he enters his prime. One a health risk early in his career, Stafford hasn’t missed a start since 2010. He’s already made over $110 million before this deal. Stafford is inked through his age-34 season.

Holy crap !!! That a lot of dough.
I cannot begin to imagine what Wentz will end up getting in 2020, if he plays above average.
Somewhere around, what? 300 mill for 3 years?
    It boggles thy mind.

Gonna miss Dorenbos. How does his Vegas gig not offer more money year round at this point though?
