Not So Pretty

The 2017 preseason is over. The 16-10 loss to the Jets was an ugly affair. There were mistakes all over the field and Matt McGloin reverted to his poor form of the first two preseason game. The Jets were just as bad. That was the kind of showing that gives preseason games a bad name.

I’m going to just throw out some quick nuggets on things that stood out to me, good or bad.

Elijah Qualls was the player of the game for me. He exploded off the ball consistently and was disruptive throughout the game. Qualls showed the traits the Eagles hoped for when they drafted him. He played a lot of 2-gap in college, but the light has really gone on for him the past two weeks and he looked like the disruptive DT the team wanted. I would lean toward him making the roster as the #5 DT for now.

Donnel Pumphrey failed to take advantage of 237 touches. Or at least it seemed like that many. He ran 7 times for 10 yards. He caught 1 pass for 3 yards. He returned 5 punts for 48 yards and 3 kickoffs for 80 yards. That’s a lot of touches and he just wasn’t impressive. The biggest thing for me has nothing to do with size or skill. I just don’t see a good burst. I go back and forth on whether he makes the roster. He hasn’t earned it this summer, but the team liked him a lot based on what he did in college so they’re going to factor that in.

Corey Clement played early, but not much. Most people see that as a sign that he’s made the team. I get that logic and it might be true. I just don’t find Clement to be a compelling player at all. I do give him credit for playing well this summer.

Dexter McDougle had a solid debut. He was in on 3 tackles and deflected a pass. He flashed on a couple of plays. I need to go re-watch the tape to study his performance.

Jaylen Watkins had a good showing. He hurt his foot, left the game and then came back. That kind of toughness will impress the coaches. He had a chance for a pick-six, but couldn’t make the grab. Read it well and made a good break on the ball. He had 5 solo tackles.

LT Dillon Gordon did not play well. He was beaten on multiple plays that led to the QB getting hit. It is easy to say “Cut him”. I’m not so sure about that. Gordon is a project and the Eagles know that. They don’t want him to be the backup LT right now. They want to develop him for the future. His potential might keep him on the roster. His play the last couple of weeks has not been good.

Joe Walker played pretty well. He was in on 4 tackles and had some flash plays. Walker blitzed early and knocked the Jets starting QB out of the game. Was only temporary, but that was a big hit. I still don’t know if he’s played well enough to be the backup MLB. Tough call for the team.

Mack Hollins, Bryce Treggs and Shelton Gibson all played well. Hollins caught 3 passes and downed a punt inside the 10-yard line. Treggs played in the slot and outside. He was 4-41. Caught the ball well and looked good on underneath routes. Gibson was 4-40 as a receiver and seemed to catch the ball well. He still hasn’t had a big play, but has done some good things as an underneath receiver, which was the weak part of his game. Hollins is a lock. Treggs and Gibson helped themselves, but are both on the bubble.

Aaron Grymes was up and down. He was awful on a 2nd Qtr drive, missing tackles on multiple plays. To his credit, Grymes settled down and got better. He finished the game with 6 tackles and played better once he settled down.

DE Alex McCalister had a sack and was disruptive, but then left the game with a hamstring injury. Does he make the team? IR again? We’ll have to wait and see.

Beau Allen made his 2017 debut. He moved well and looked pretty good.

Pumphrey was a bad pick in April, looking worse now. Shame because the back half of that draft looks pretty iffy, and all we needed was an RB in a RB-heavy draft.

If Hollins, Gerry and Qualls all turn out to be longer term contributors, I think you would have to say that they did pretty well. The hit rate on starters in the first round is only something like 60-70 percent anyway, and the odds of drafting a viable player drops dramatically after that.

I’m going to have to take Gerry off of the list. I don’t see that working out.

  9. 9 Guy Media said at 8:26 AM on September 1st, 2017:

Nope. He has tons of mistakes on film as you scroll down here. Clement stiff arming him right onto his soft rear end is particularly funny.

“slow to read his keys” is the most telling comment from this write up which I haven’t seen anything to countermand.

Too soon. We’ll see I guess. But remember we are talking about late round picks here. If one of them turns out to be a passable starter and a couple more competent backups and good special teamers, they have been succesful.

  16. 16 Guy Media said at 7:46 AM on September 1st, 2017:

But the general consensus of the anti Pump people was that he was too small to hold up. His issue has been that he’s just not doing anything explosive with the football. His numbers in college didn’t indicated he’d be plodding like Tony Hunt.

  17. 17 PhillyAvenger said at 9:35 AM on September 1st, 2017:

I’m ok with them taking that chance in the 4th. Pump put up numbers in college, and I still think he could be an NFL player. Maybe give him a year to hit the weights and practice NFL style, day in and day out before giving up on him.

  18. 18 Someguy77 said at 10:09 AM on September 1st, 2017:

No idea until next year really because so much of it depends on Jones.

  19. 19 CTbirdsguy said at 12:16 AM on September 1st, 2017:

Tommy, when you say the eagles will factor in Pumphrey’s college evaluation with his professional evaluation, I just don’t get it. What they saw from him in college led them to draft him, but what they’ve seen from him against pros should lead them to exclude him from the roster! What am I missing? Why is his college production relevant anymore?

  20. 20 Greg Tulino said at 12:20 AM on September 1st, 2017:

Translation from coaches… “We know he is not good right now, but he was a 4th round pick so we are not going to give up on him completely at this point.”

  21. 21 Ray888 said at 12:46 AM on September 1st, 2017:

Isn’t he later this AM that we learn that he has been playing with a break in a small bone in his foot that has limited his quickness? He gets yelled at for hiding it, props for toughness, and immediate placement on IR. Everyone wins!

  23. 23 D3FB said at 6:44 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Look I have hated Pumphrey from the minute they drafted him and have the timestamped tweets to prove it (I pretty much threw a bitch fit all of day 3 because it really fucked up their needs vs the board).

I would be glad if they cut him.

At the same time 4 years of college tape is a much larger sample than 50 touches with inconsistency. It’s more about feeling strong enough about your priors that a limited sample doesn’t override them.

  24. 24 A_T_G said at 6:49 PM on September 1st, 2017:

  27. 27 Guy Media said at 7:52 AM on September 1st, 2017:

I’d love to see if they can get him through waivers and onto the practice squad. If they don’t want to lose him after that point, just pay him the rookie minimum and point to the impending doom of a few guys in the DE group for 2018.

But I’d like him getting a lot of practice reps this year and adding some NFL strength.

  28. 28 Stephen E. said at 1:49 PM on September 1st, 2017:

  29. 29 Guy Media said at 7:55 PM on September 1st, 2017:

  30. 30 Greg Tulino said at 12:20 AM on September 1st, 2017:

I still believe HR will look for an upgrade at RB via trade or from other teams that have a deep group of backs. I just can’t see us counting on Wendell Smallwood and Blount to carry the load with another 6-8 carries from Sproles per game. Clement is not impressive and Pumphrey is just not ready for prime time. There are upgrades out there and I believe HR will be pressing hard to give us another viable RB. No matter what, however, I believe this team will have RB at the top of the list in next years draft.

  32. 32 Someguy77 said at 10:03 AM on September 1st, 2017:

If the Jets are wiling to trade Forte for a 7th, I hope the Eagles make that pick.

Going to be interesting to see how Cook does for the Vikings and how fast he takes the starting gig from Murray. Eagles missed a real opportunity here unfortunately and have to hope Jones turns out to be a solid starting CB next year. I’d rather have Cook.

Really fun to see some offensive sets with Cook and Sproles with Ertz, Jeffrey, and Smith.

  33. 33 sonofdman said at 11:02 AM on September 1st, 2017:

You know Minnesota took Cook before the Eagles pick, right? The Eagles didn’t pass on the opportunity to take Cook to take Jones. Cook wasn’t available because he was already selected by Minnesota.

  34. 34 Someguy77 said at 11:51 AM on September 1st, 2017:

They traded up and leapfrogged the Eagles to select Cook. Reports were that the Eagles were interested in Cook.

I don’t buy for a second the Eagles would have selected Jones over Cook if he was available when they were drafting.

  35. 35 sonofdman said at 1:02 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I agree. I would have liked for them to take Cook if he was available, but I have repeatedly heard criticism that they should have drafted Cook when Minnesota traded in front of them and they never had the chance to get Cook.

It seems like you were saying the Eagles missed the opportunity to get Cook because he didn’t make it to their draft pick, not that they missed the opportunity by not selecting him. I agree and sorry about the snarky response. 🙂

  36. 36 Ankerstjernen said at 2:47 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Lets see how Cook turns out. He neither had elite speed, quickness or strength and came with plenty of character concerns. In a few years from now we might be very happy to have the pro bowl corner and not the ageing RB whom we are cutting because its cheaper to just draft a new one than pay him actual money.

I turned it off after halftime, it sounds like Pump did his part in ensuring the redshirt year?

  39. 39 Ankerstjernen said at 7:17 AM on September 1st, 2017:

Gordon not playing well might be the most significant take-away from these last few games (I don’t really care which rb4/wr5 they keep, it likely wont matter much either way). Some thought they saw Gordon as a very promising future starter at tackle, which is why they kept him on the 53 all of last year even though he clearly wasn’t ready to play. But it seems like he is not developing as they hoped. If true, getting a young tackle might be our biggest need heading into next offseason.

  45. 45 Someguy77 said at 9:57 AM on September 1st, 2017:

Nothing to do with not being ready. He just doesn’t have the speed or athletic ability to compensate for his size. Poor pick from the get go.

  46. 46 Guy Media said at 7:50 AM on September 1st, 2017:

Seeing the 53 come together over the next two days should be fun. I’m genuinely at a loss about what the final RB/WR/TE group should be. Other than not wanting to see roster spaces wasted on Watkins or Gerry, I don’t have any guys that I’d hardcore want to see on the roster due to standout game performances.

I also find it funny that the writers are really starting to get all over the place on what they expect to see as the final 53 man roster.

  47. 47 Dave said at 11:14 AM on September 1st, 2017:

If a team is decimated by injuries to RB/WR/TE, they can set up a game plan to maximize their strengths in other areas of the offense.

If the OL/DL/CB has injuries, the team is in serious trouble. Personally, I want to go heavy on OL to protect Wentz. I can easily see a situation where more than one OL are injured at the same time throughout the season. Unless Clement and/or Pumphrey can play OL, neither of them on the would help protect Wentz.

It’s always hard to balance to productivity and measurables. Pump may just have the size/atheticism combo to succeed at this level. It seems like something that should have been caught. Has anyone with his physique and athleticism ever been good? I’m not aware of any.

I’m all about getting talent and coaching it up. College production is often overrated. The league is littered with guys that aren’t super productive colleg players, but tear up the NFL.

    Dontari Poe
    JJ Watt
    Ziggy Ansah
    Demaryius Thomas
    Antonio Gates
    jimmy Graham
    Jason Peters

I like NFL physical traits. If a guy has the right work ethic and athletic profile coaches should get them to perform

  62. 62 ChoTime said at 1:19 PM on September 3rd, 2017:

I hear you, but my preferences are the opposite. I think the athletic projects are too rare to build a draft philosophy around; “littered” is greatly overstating things. Sometimes, those guys pan out. Generally, players who can hang in the NFL dominate the competition in college. And why wouldn’t they?

re: 2017 draft. Drafts are full of hits and misses, nature of the beast. I will posit to say this year’s isn’t off to a fantastic start.

I think Barnett was a good pick.

We’ll see about Sidney Jones — clearly we can’t ignore that he won’t contribute much this year. That’s a lot of drawbacks for a 2nd rounder — there are starting CBs in the league RIGHT NOW taken in the same round or later. Remember: Howie needed to trade a 3rd rounder and a productive WR afterwards to get a starter at CB. Good trade, I think, but we can’t ignore its link to the Sidney Jones pick.

Douglas is an interesting project (good size and limited college experience), but has a ceiling I don’t think anyone denies is below that of other CBs. He’s slow, a bit awkward. Might never make be a starter.

Pumphrey doesn’t look good so far.

Hollins looks good. Gibson doesn’t. Gerry looks marginal. Qualls could be good.

The tale of the tape won’t be clear for years, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say this draft class did not address some key needs at the time and hasn’t gotten off to a great start.

  65. 65 FairOaks said at 12:22 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I don’t think Jones and Darby were all that linked. We needed two starting CBs down the road. Jones was only one. And the reward of Jones is hopefully to have a much better CB than the guys drafted later who are starting now. I mean, we drafted a 7th rounder last year who is sort of starting (Mills), so he must be good right?

If Jones turns into a well-above-average CB, it was a fantastic pick, regardless of this year.

Pumphrey was the real boom-or-bust pick. Looking like the latter. He either had a special elusive ability against NFL players or he didn’t — not sure that he would improve tremendously in a year. Unless the recent gained weight robbed him of his burst, in which case… not sure he’d last.

Other guys, it remains to be seen. You are often just drafting backups in the later rounds. It will take a while to see where the guys land (though I have a hard time seeing how Pumphrey could suddenly look a lot better in the future).

  66. 66 Insomniac said at 3:24 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I thought Hollins might have been the real boom-or-bust pick. He came out as a really raw but interesting project WR. He didn’t really wow you in the tape but you could see some potential. I called him a Riley Cooper clone, I’m going to have to rethink that.

  67. 67 FairOaks said at 6:37 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Hollins was supposed to be a sure-fire special teams stud, so he was almost certainly going to be a good role player at the minimum — not a bust. If he turns into what we once hoped Riley Cooper would become, then it turns into an awesome pick. He looks better than Cooper actually ever got, that’s for sure.

Pumphrey to me was a guy whose unique skills would either translate to the NFL game, or they wouldn’t. I thought if he looked pedestrian in pre-season, you might actually be able to decide on bust status much earlier than most picks. An interesting gamble, if he turned into a gadget player, though not sure I would have traded up for him. So far it seems just his ability to take hits at that size has come across. He may get a year because of the draft capital expended, but any hopes I had for him are fading fast.

grading the draft before the first game might be a little bold. If Barnett is good and Jones is a #1 CB, it’s a really good draft. We just don’t know yet.

  70. 70 Koy: The Legend of Neckbeard said at 12:34 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Yeah I agree it’s very early for most of these players. I’m trying to carefully couch my criticisms within the context of what we know right now. Maybe we don’t know much at all, but there’s certainly some room for judgement — at least in terms of the positions we filled, current needs etc.

I think the Jones pick, in particular, is worth more scrutiny than its getting. Nothing reactionary in noting we likely lose a year of a player’s rookie salary, with no guarantee the player is any better than the other (healthy) players available at that time in the draft.

Like the backup QB, it’s easy to dream on someone we haven’t seen play in a game. The opportunity cost of that pick is real. I would venture to say the odds are against him.

  73. 73 FairOaks said at 3:02 PM on September 1st, 2017:

There’s no guarantee that a healthy player is better than someone picked after him. The gamble is that you get a top flight cb instead if just ok. If Jones had been healthy good chance he was our first round pick instead and therefore no Barnett.

  74. 74 Ankerstjernen said at 5:38 PM on September 1st, 2017:

If he spends the entire year on IR he doesnt accrue a season, which means we will simply control his rights for an additional year tacking on to the end of his rookie deal. This is why we are unlikely to see him play in the final couple of games even is he is healthy by then.

Isn’t that the point now – not to address today’s needs but to project future contributors based on their college production. Eagles claim too many mistakes made drafting for need.

  76. 76 or____ said at 1:05 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I believe that’s evidence based wisdom that the majority of Eagles fans choose to dismiss.

Remember, it’s always a wise move to draw conclusions from preseason play right? And (forget the 3 year rule), you can know what a draft pick will be after preseason year 1.

  77. 77 Koy: The Legend of Neckbeard said at 3:09 PM on September 1st, 2017:

You, paraphrasing what I said: “Remember, it’s always a wise move to draw conclusions from preseason play right? And (forget the 3 year rule), you can know what a draft pick will be after preseason year 1.”

What I actually said: “The tale of the tape won’t be clear for years, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say this draft class did not address some key needs at the time and hasn’t gotten off to a great start.”

Word of the day is nuance.

  78. 78 Dave said at 12:39 PM on September 1st, 2017:

“That’s a lot of drawbacks for a 2nd rounder — there are starting CBs in the league RIGHT NOW taken in the same round or later.”

I’m not sure what this has to do with anything. Mills started last year as a 7th round pick. Why? Because our other corners stunk. Just because a rookie is starting does not mean he is good or going to be good…context is needed.

  79. 79 Koy: The Legend of Neckbeard said at 3:06 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Would any of those taken this year be starting for the Eagles?

Take a step back and forget about Darby for a moment. We didn’t have him at the time of the draft (and that trade would not have been necessary if we had better corners coming out of the offseason).

If — as everyone seems to admit — our CBs are the worst position on the team, how many teams have starters that are worse? How many teams are starting Jalen Mills?

  80. 80 Dave said at 3:18 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Dallas for sure. The only reason I know is because Nolan Carroll is starting.

  81. 81 BlindChow said at 9:03 PM on September 1st, 2017:

There are plenty of 1st round DB’s taken in the last five drafts who turned out to be busts. Just because they were taken high and played right away did not make them better picks.

Jones was someone they had a 1st round grade on who was available in the 2nd, with a caveat. They (presumably) had information about his condition that we didn’t have, and they chose to roll the dice.

I like the bet. I’m glad we didn’t draft for immediate need, like we did with Jaiquawn Jarrett, a 2nd round DB who DID play right away…

  82. 82 ChoTime said at 2:02 PM on September 1st, 2017:

If Barnett is this good, its a good draft class, end of story. IMO.

  83. 83 Koy: The Legend of Neckbeard said at 3:18 PM on September 1st, 2017:

On this, I disagree. Look at 2015.

    1 Nelson Agholor WR USC
    2 Eric Rowe CB Utah
    3 Jordan Hicks LB Texas
    6 JaCorey Shepherd CB Kansas
6 Randall Evans CB Kansas State
7 Brian Mihalik DE Boston College

We got a stud MLB in the 3rd round! Is this a good draft?

I deny it. Clearly the Eagles do too, or he wouldn’t have been a 3rd round pick

  88. 88 Koy: The Legend of Neckbeard said at 3:02 PM on September 1st, 2017:

The 3rd round is a perfectly fine place for a #2 or #3 CB. You can’t be a lockdown corner if you run a 4.6 40.

  89. 89 Insomniac said at 3:16 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Let me amend that to “you have to be freak talent to be a lockdown corner and run a 4.6 40”.

I don’t dislike Douglas, but I don’t think it’s fair to him to set the bar so high. Glad for him to prove the odds the wrong. But they’re odds for a reason.

  92. 92 Koy: The Legend of Neckbeard said at 3:27 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I’m not saying it was terrible by any means, but I think saying “1st round talent in the 2nd round” and dropping the mic is a not the most accurate way to evaluate picking Jones at 43 over others (or drafting him later).

  93. 93 P_P_K said at 3:32 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I agree. I’d be happy if Jones is a stud and my ever-present Eagles angst is unwarranted (in this case). Addressing the cb problem by picking a guy with a significant injury that early in the draft was not my preferred strategy. Time will tell.

  94. 94 Ankerstjernen said at 5:35 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I dont get the pessimism at all. Understand that most picks will not become above average players because there simply are not that many above average players to go around in one draft. Outside of RB, the two biggest needs were DE and CB. For all we know, we might have come away with pro bowlers at both positions with our first two picks. If half of the rest of the draft turns out to produce a mix of capable starters and quality backups, this will have been a wildly succesful draft.

  98. 98 Ryan Rambo said at 3:17 PM on September 1st, 2017:

Seahawks acquired DE Sheldon Richardson from the Jets in exchange for Jermaine Kearse and draft considerations.
The draft consideration is expected to be a second- or third-round pick. It is quite a deal for Seattle, who unloads an overpaid receiver plus a pick for one of the more talented defensive linemen in the league. Richardson will join a front seven which already contains Bobby Wagner, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, K.J. Wright, Frank Clark, and more. With Richardson owed just over $8 million in the final year of his deal, Seattle may look to work out an extension.

  100. 100 Ark87 said at 3:28 PM on September 1st, 2017:

That would complete sink most teams, Wilson makes it work just enough to keep Seattle a top contender next to Green Bay for that post-season bye week, assuming Earl Thomas is 100%. The defense was day and night before and after his injury.

  101. 101 Ark87 said at 3:24 PM on September 1st, 2017:

hell of a move for Seattle. The Jets are really determined to bulldoze this thing thoroughly. I think they are giving up the little that they have too recklessly if it’s not a second that they get (they did them a favor by taking Kearse off their hands).

  102. 102 Guy Media said at 6:24 PM on September 1st, 2017:

If they get anything close to full effort from Richardson; that’s a steal.

  103. 103 Insomniac said at 3:18 PM on September 1st, 2017:

I have never been a fan of the Pumphrey pick. I didn’t see the Sproles comparison but wanted to give him a fair shot because I love good underdog stories. Boy has he not shown anything so far and it’s doubtful he’ll get any more explosive when he has to gain 10+ pounds. I said Jacquizz Rodgers is his ceiling in the last thread and I think I’ll stick to that. Short RB who has good toughness/deciveness for his size but are limited athletes (and yes Rodgers hasn’t done much in the league). I’m really doubting he even reaches that with the sample size given so far but luckily he has a season ahead of him (maybe?).

I think Watkins and McDougle makes the roster. Grymes and Smith haven’t shown that either of them are better than Watkins.
