6:44

The Eagles defense played the entire game with a lead, but struggled in the 2nd half and let the Chargers get with 26-24 with 6:44 left. That’s when the offense came back on the field.

They never left.

The Big Boys up front took control and the RBs pounded the rock, play after play. The Eagles ate up the final 6:44. The Chargers burned through all three timeouts and the 2-minute warning, but the Eagles just kept driving the ball. When is the last time you remember the Eagles eating up that much clock to seal a game?

Rookie Corey Clement started the drive and helped move the chains initially. Then it was time for the Hammer and LeGarrette Blount came in. He ran for 3, 6 and 14 yards to put the game away.

The Eagles ran for 240 214 yards. They won time of possession 39:18 to 20:42.

When I wrote my preview for this week, I focused on the Eagles need to stay grounded, both in terms of the offense running the ball and the team being focused and getting past last week’s huge win. The coaches did both. They had the players focused and ready. And they fed the ball to the RBs. Blount, Smallwood and Clement all had 10 or more carries. Smallwood and Blount added receptions that covered more than 20 yards.

The other huge part of this game was Jake Elliott. He was 4 for 4 on FGs, and none of them were short. The longest was 53 yards. Those were no-doubt kicks. The ball exploded off his foot and went right down the middle.

Great job all around.

The Eagles are 3-1. They lead the NFC East. They are 2-1 on the road and 2-0 in the division. And they did all of this with all kinds of injury issues.

There are plenty of things for the coaches to correct and this team has a long way to go, but right now there is a lot to be happy about with this team.

This team is going to be scary good when the long ball starts connecting and the CAB situation gets a healthy Darby and Jones on the field.

Correct, I believe the Ags pass was for 36 yards.

AMAZING to put together a drive to preserve a close lead to win the game. Loved to see them beat somebody up running the ball……….however

    – I hate having to have a kicker be perfect to win a game.
    – The replay ref can fucking die screaming after being eaten alive by hyenas for that “TD” reversal to Henry.
    – WHY WHY WHY are we only getting FGs instead of TDs?
    – Somebody should slap Phillip Rivers in his fucking inbred mouth the next time he feels like he should be able to speak to the refs to work a call in his favor.
    – Can we please win a laugher of a game? Please?

    LOVE being 3-1

PS – Titans and Patriots should go fuck themselves with a barb wire baseball bat for losing to those asshole teams today.

  75. 75 sonofdman said at 8:24 PM on October 1st, 2017:

It did seem unlikely that there could have been indisputable visual evidence that Henry had control before his knee hit OB. Also, why was Golden Tate down outside the endzone when his shin touched the ground last week, but this week it didn’t seem to matter that Henry’s shin was touching the ground OB before his knee hit and likely before he had complete possession?

  76. 76 Guy Media said at 8:25 PM on October 1st, 2017:

    Exactly!

  77. 77 FairOaks said at 9:38 PM on October 1st, 2017:

I could only see on the sports bar TV, but it sure looked like a foot was down before the shin went down too.

  78. 78 Guy Media said at 9:41 PM on October 1st, 2017:

But the ball wasn’t controlled until the shin was down out of bounds. The foot was down prior to it being a catch.

  79. 79 FairOaks said at 10:18 PM on October 1st, 2017:

From a distance, sure looked like it was controlled pretty quick, before the steps. Thought it was only ruled OB because they thought the second leg was OB, and when it wasn’t, maybe it got overturned that way. Would have to see a replay to see how much of a bobble there was, and if it really was a loss of control.

EDIT: found a replay. Thought he had control as soon as he brought the ball against his body. At that moment, both feet were touching and the knee/shin were not yet down (knee still almost a foot in the air, actually).

  80. 80 sonofdman said at 10:32 PM on October 1st, 2017:

It was very close as to when he had control of the ball compared to when his shin touch out of bounds. It seemed impossible to tell on the replay exactly when he had complete control of the ball. But the standard for overturning the ruling on the field is indisputable visual evidence, and I don’t think there was indisputable visual evidence to change the ruling on the field of incomplete. If the refs originally called him in, I don’t think there was have been enough to overturn that call either.

  83. 83 CrackSammich said at 8:08 PM on October 1st, 2017:

It might after a few years

  87. 87 FairOaks said at 8:08 PM on October 1st, 2017:

    Three years in that stadium…

From the sounds of it, he wanted a new stadium deal, and Kroenke outmaneuvered him to be the first team in LA, and Spanos had been a good “league guy” up to now, so nobody wanted to block it if that’s what he wanted to do. But damn it looks like a horrendous decision. Guessing the league would have rather he stayed in San Diego.

  118. 118 Guy Media said at 9:18 PM on October 1st, 2017:

Schwartz’s specifically flamed him twice this off-season for not showing up on the stat sheet, so I’m sticking with that as my barometer. And if he was still on his rookie deal, I’d be happy we had him helping out vs. the run. It just sucks that we signed him to be that 9+sack guy he was a few years ago, but we haven’t seen that guy again. I’m dying for the days when we had 10+ sack guys on this team every year.

I think last year was so different than his situation this year that it’s not a relevant comparison. Last year’s Wentz barely played in the preseason and he was named starter 8 days before the opener. Once teams got tape on him and adapted his struggles. Add the struggles with the OL and being a rookie and it’s no suprise he regressed.

This year teams have all the tape they need on Wentz and they are still struggling to rattle him. He is a far better player this year than last.

I do think we are being a tad overly critical (myself included at times) in a game we traveled across country and never trailed in. Not to mention a statement drive at the end to put an exclamation mark on the W.

I think people consider the Chargers a garbage team because they’re 0-3. But they’ve generally played tough. Better than all the other winless teams, and several teams that have a win (looking at you Jets)

I’m going to try to enjoy the win. One of the most obnoxious groups of people in the universe are Patriots fans as they complain they didn’t dominate hard enough. The only thing worse would be doing the same thing with a team that isn’t a perennial contender. We can’t go from 1-7 on the road last year, be luke warm on the team all offseason expecting 9-7, then turn around and act like Patriot fans.

Speaking of the Patriots and Patriots fans

I was there. It was a surreal scene. It was the first time I’ve ever seen an opposing stadium so wholly and utterly conquered. The Chargers fans were pretty cool in the early going, but as the game dragged on, you started getting a sense that they were humiliated by it. They were expecting a big Eagles turnout, but what they got left them stunned, and I think more than a little jealous.

It’s one of hose memories that just gets better and better the more I think about it. Our hapless, ringless little team has the kind of fan base other cities can only dream about. The whole league saw that today. It was great to be a part of it.

It’s too bad. He actually probably could have helped out here.

Man, so DeShaun Watson put up some nice numbers today. With him, and Wentz, Goff, Mariota, Winston, the position looks to possibly have some nice talent going forward.

Super happy about that win. Not happy about the last three games giving up a ton of points in the 4th quarter and almost leading to 3 losses and not 1. But yeah, like you said, a lot to be happy about and a win is a win. Excited to see what October brings.

Last time we did this, we won on Green Bay in Chip’s first year. That game was fun.
