6:44
Posted: October 1st, 2017 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 241 Comments »The Eagles defense played the entire game with a lead, but struggled in the 2nd half and let the Chargers get with 26-24 with 6:44 left. That’s when the offense came back on the field.
They never left.
The Big Boys up front took control and the RBs pounded the rock, play after play. The Eagles ate up the final 6:44. The Chargers burned through all three timeouts and the 2-minute warning, but the Eagles just kept driving the ball. When is the last time you remember the Eagles eating up that much clock to seal a game?
Rookie Corey Clement started the drive and helped move the chains initially. Then it was time for the Hammer and LeGarrette Blount came in. He ran for 3, 6 and 14 yards to put the game away.
The Eagles ran for 240 214 yards. They won time of possession 39:18 to 20:42.
When I wrote my preview for this week, I focused on the Eagles need to stay grounded, both in terms of the offense running the ball and the team being focused and getting past last week’s huge win. The coaches did both. They had the players focused and ready. And they fed the ball to the RBs. Blount, Smallwood and Clement all had 10 or more carries. Smallwood and Blount added receptions that covered more than 20 yards.
The other huge part of this game was Jake Elliott. He was 4 for 4 on FGs, and none of them were short. The longest was 53 yards. Those were no-doubt kicks. The ball exploded off his foot and went right down the middle.
Great job all around.
The Eagles are 3-1. They lead the NFC East. They are 2-1 on the road and 2-0 in the division. And they did all of this with all kinds of injury issues.
There are plenty of things for the coaches to correct and this team has a long way to go, but right now there is a lot to be happy about with this team.
_
This team is going to be scary good when the long ball starts connecting and the CAB situation gets a healthy Darby and Jones on the field.
Not sure about scary good but I’ll take some comfortable wins at this point
That pass to Ags was on the money. I remember it being a deep ball (?) that was many IPA’s ago tho
Correct, I believe the Ags pass was for 36 yards.
I should clarify that I meant long TD passes.
Can Torrey Smith stop dropping passes?
I was ecstatic to see Mack Hollins in the game. It’s week 4, when does Torrey get the Semaulo treatment?
Maybe in a few more weeks?
How about next week? I’m bummed to say, but Torrey seems to be average at best.
What I was thinking all evening: This team is going to be scary good when they get two legitimate starting cover corners on the field.
Darby and Jones………….for 2018
Mills was and has been good. Douglas got torched today – 2 TDs and then some.
Just in time for the playoffs.
Nice title, Tommy. I can’t remember the last time we closed out a game that way.
As bonus, if WASTEAM loses tomorrow like they should, we will be the only NFCE winner this week.
KC had better stomp a mud hole into Washington.
Things rarely work out that nicely or logically, tbh.
We will never forget the day Carson Palmer and the Eagles defeated the San Diego Chargers.
Eagles win, Cowboys and Giants lose. Its Football Christmas!
Patriots lost too. That is my football Christmas trifecta!
and teh fashion in which all those things happened… just beautiful
I know I love the heartbreak too. Its just so… savory 😉
Not ok today. Losing to that piece of crap Scam isn’t ever ok.
The birds are 1-1 on the road and 2-0 at home. Get your facts straight, Tommy. 😉
Well u didn’t count the moral victory in KC lol
Try again. 2-1 on the road, 1-0 at home.
Or were you counting today as a home game?
you got there in the end 🙂
Good morning.

sure sounded like one. Go Eagles; go Eagle’s L.A. fans; Eagles ‘ fans everywhere.
Palmer just got robbed.
He is by far the worst Carson in the NFL
what happened? they won right?
yeah, there was a circus catch on the sideline that got called out. it was definitely in.
Larry Fitz wins the game, gets hurt. Dude was a monster. That might be the end of another great career.
Looking down the schedule, barring any further injuries I think we do have a shot at being 11-5 or 12-4.
Cardinals – W
Panthers – Push
Redskins – W
Niners – W
Broncos – Push
Bye
Cowgirls – W
Bears – W
Seahawks – W
Rams – Push
Giants – W
Raiders – Push
Cowgirls – W
15-1 here we come!
I’ll tell you the Panthers game should be a win. I live in Charlotte and their Oline is a mess.
BB begs to differ…
BB has no defense
Neither has Tom Brady. Lol
We actually have to tackle Cam if we get to him though. If he escapes there will likely be people open…
… but let’s worry about that when we get there.
If it was on a Sunday, like it should be, I’d agree. But the NFL FUCKED us by making us play Thursday on the road instead of home.
I’d like to think so too. I have them and the Rams as the more likely wins.
Which game do we get Darby back?
If Darby misses 6 weeks . . . it’s Washington.
Count down or up from there.
Carolina is tough due to being a Thursday. Denver on the road doesn’t impress me. At Seattle remains a loss. The Rams really aren’t that good. Oakland lost at Washington, so I’m no longer in the mood for a loss in that game.
Seahawks are garbage.
And if they win by 40 tonight?
But I hear you, I just don’t trust us vs. that team in their stadium. When did we beat them last?
Does it matter? The Seahawks of the past are in the past.
I’ll need to see us win in Seattle to believe we can win in Seattle.
Too many chunk plays, too many TD opportunities missed. But still showing improvement.

Greetings from Carson 😉
Savage.
Question . . .
How long ’til Agholor replaces Torrey Smith on the outside as starter?
I know Smith has great speed . . . but the drops are sooooo painful.
Or maybe the rookie?
Dude…. Mack is up next. Leave Ags where he is finally playing well
But yeah Smith needs to see the bench
And we need to convince Ags he is a lowly slot guy before his contract comes due.
Just like what happened with Boykin
I saw Mack in the lineup several times in the second half.
Run plays
Last time the eagles ate up the clock like that was vs the packers when chip Kelly was the HC. Ran out more than 9 minutes of clock to seal the game
So far . . . Birds have beaten the 3 teams they definitely should have.
That’s how you get to the playoffs.
And — forgive the repetition — but in 6 weeks, and next year, and 2019 . . .
Wentz is gonna be something really, really special.
And these close games won’t be so close anymore.
and 2029 and 2030 and…
NOT 1, NOT 2, NOT 3, NOT 4, NOT 5, NOT 6, NOT 7
I see a Tommy post on “Finishing” coming this week.
We’ve done that in 3/4 games. We didn’t do that last year (Lions, Cowboys, etc.). Good sign of growth & development. Credit to Doug.
You’re right.
Credit Pederson . . . but even more, Wentz one year older.
And no backbreaking, late turnovers.
Wentz has cleaned up a ton of what he needed to from year one. I can’t wait to see how much he keeps improving.
Yeah, it is nice to close out games for wins for sure.
AMAZING to put together a drive to preserve a close lead to win the game. Loved to see them beat somebody up running the ball……….however
– I hate having to have a kicker be perfect to win a game.
– The replay ref can fucking die screaming after being eaten alive by hyenas for that “TD” reversal to Henry.
– WHY WHY WHY are we only getting FGs instead of TDs?
– Somebody should slap Phillip Rivers in his fucking inbred mouth the next time he feels like he should be able to speak to the refs to work a call in his favor.
– Can we please win a laugher of a game? Please?
LOVE being 3-1
PS – Titans and Patriots should go fuck themselves with a barb wire baseball bat for losing to those asshole teams today.
I like you when you are drinking.
Haven’t touched a drink since Friday night! Just fired up from being on edge for far too long all day.
Now I think the prospect of you drinking is somewhat scary.
I know myself too well when it comes to high-stakes sporting events and booze. I don’t mix them. I’m a very happy drunk and a very angry sports fan.
As it should be! 🙂
It did seem unlikely that there could have been indisputable visual evidence that Henry had control before his knee hit OB. Also, why was Golden Tate down outside the endzone when his shin touched the ground last week, but this week it didn’t seem to matter that Henry’s shin was touching the ground OB before his knee hit and likely before he had complete possession?
Exactly!
I could only see on the sports bar TV, but it sure looked like a foot was down before the shin went down too.
But the ball wasn’t controlled until the shin was down out of bounds. The foot was down prior to it being a catch.
From a distance, sure looked like it was controlled pretty quick, before the steps. Thought it was only ruled OB because they thought the second leg was OB, and when it wasn’t, maybe it got overturned that way. Would have to see a replay to see how much of a bobble there was, and if it really was a loss of control.
EDIT: found a replay. Thought he had control as soon as he brought the ball against his body. At that moment, both feet were touching and the knee/shin were not yet down (knee still almost a foot in the air, actually).
It was very close as to when he had control of the ball compared to when his shin touch out of bounds. It seemed impossible to tell on the replay exactly when he had complete control of the ball. But the standard for overturning the ruling on the field is indisputable visual evidence, and I don’t think there was indisputable visual evidence to change the ruling on the field of incomplete. If the refs originally called him in, I don’t think there was have been enough to overturn that call either.

Why on earth did the NFL allow Spanos to make the Chargers a 16-game visiting team?
The players must absolutely hate it.
Money. I think they would rather take a loss on the LA expedition in the short term than lose leverage in the public money for private stadium boondoggles.
They’ll get a win on LA when the next TV deal is up.
Does that make up for their $645M relocation fee?
It might after a few years
Three years in that stadium…
From the sounds of it, he wanted a new stadium deal, and Kroenke outmaneuvered him to be the first team in LA, and Spanos had been a good “league guy” up to now, so nobody wanted to block it if that’s what he wanted to do. But damn it looks like a horrendous decision. Guessing the league would have rather he stayed in San Diego.
Oh, and the NFL doesn’t give a fuck about the players.
the NFL only cares about money
and they will destroy the league in order to prove that
Rivers threw a Tantrum during the game. Looks like they will pick top 5 this year. Terrible organization out there
Rivers needed to be slapped.
I was embarrassed for him lol
Time for Means to play over Curry yet? 0 sacks in 4 games is rough.
Doesnt Means play LDE though? Tough ask for Curry playing RDE. But he has been solid with the run stops.
I’m not sure how much Means can flip sides, but it’s a good question.
Curry is the reason we beat the Giants
Did you spell Elliot incorrectly?
In all seriousness, without curry the eagles would have needed a TD and a FG to win, not just two FGs
I hear you, but the guy has 2.5 sacks in the last 20 games and is killing the cap. We’ll need money for Jernigan, Burton, Hicks, Alson, etc.
Burton can go. Timmy needs to be the #1 priority. Alshon is #2 at this point especially if he doesn’t start showing he’s worth the big money.
I can’t argue with your rating of those players, but I’d LOVE to have extra money from Curry being traded to roll into signing those guys.
I haven’t seen a great breakdown yet, but my eyes tell me that AJ is consistently double covered
Neither have I. He has been playing against a good stretch of #1 CBs but you can’t struggle against all of them.
Can’t argue with that.
He is killing the cap so we should put a worse player on the field?
If you play Long and Barnett more snaps it isn’t worse.
No, but Curry had a really dumb penalty today.
As much as I hate Curry stealing money, I didn’t like that flag. If that was a penalty why wasn’t the fucking asshole on Carolina who lit McNabb up on the ground in the 2003 season playoff game flagged?
Ugh! Didn’t he break some ribs? I was screaming at the TV.
Yeah, it knocked him out of the game.
It should have been a penalty on Carolina but black QB reasons.
Way to not get over things. . I’m probe to this as well
Not even close?
Ok, so can Curry start getting some sacks in that case? And can Graham start playing again while we’re at it?
Maybe we’d have a good record if Curry had more sacks
immaterial
Yeah he needs to show up on the stat sheet. He looks to have an impact in game. He made a couple bad plays, but overall he is a big part of the 3-1 start.
Schwartz’s specifically flamed him twice this off-season for not showing up on the stat sheet, so I’m sticking with that as my barometer. And if he was still on his rookie deal, I’d be happy we had him helping out vs. the run. It just sucks that we signed him to be that 9+sack guy he was a few years ago, but we haven’t seen that guy again. I’m dying for the days when we had 10+ sack guys on this team every year.
Is it the roster or Doug? Are well all leaning toward Doug (after all these injuries, I am)?
I have seen more evidence that Doug is a good coach than that he’s a bad one.
I think Carson and Doug, for sure. We have had more talented groups look much worse than this bunch.
I am happy that the Eagles ran off the last 6:44 of the game, but I’m not sure why Carson Went had to disrespect the flag on the last few snaps of the game. 😉
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Took me a moment…
Elliot definitely carried that kick over. Seems so much more confident than at the beginning of the game last week.
Yeah, it was nice to see him murder all of those kicks directly through.
Kicker controversy brewing
It was really nice to see the O line pass block fairly well today. Especially seeing Lane shut down that turd Bosa.
Astute point. Everyone will talk about the run game and duly noted. But that made a difference too.
It was nice not seeing Wentz dodging people as much as he had to in prior weeks. I’m sure a lot of that had to do with the run game being so strong, but I liked how our OTs played a lot.
Indeed, and they have good DEs.
Dalvin Cook out for the year with an ACL. Howie knows.
And my fantasy team is fucked. First David Johnson, now Cook.
Karma, on behalf of his crime victims, reached up and grabbed Cook’s ACL.
You really need some therapy.
No, I need successful prosecutions of plays I don’t like from programs I don’t like.
No, this is a commentary on your entire “body of work” if you will. Everytime I read one of your posts, I can’t help but picture….

Somebody has to keep everybody’s pulse up.
3-1 over the next 4 games makes sense as “par”, right?
Arizona and San Fran here are “must” wins and Washington is a “should.” @ Carolina on a Thursday is tough. I find it disrespectful on the part of the NFL to give us a road game for our Thursday game.
Somebody has to travel, right?
Yeah, the other team. I’d have preferred our game vs. the Giants to be home on a Thursday night to humble them in front of a national audience.
The upshot is we will get 10 days to prep for WAS after Thursday.
so you’re calling that win, I like it!
2-2 is par I think, right?
nah; with 3 home games I’m calling 3-1.
Think we might get a boggie.
Probably need to. The second half the schedule is the bears and 7 tough games.
How about Wentz’s only 2 INTs coming on deflected passes. He hasn’t really made smart decisions with the football so far
It’s been tons better this year for sure.
He has really made smart decisions with the football this year.. There, I fixed it.
Damn auto-correct
In our only loss no less. Let’s not forget he looked pretty damn good in the first 1/4 last season and regressed. Long way to go yet, but does look great at the moment!
Thanks again Lane and the PED posse from the MMA.
I think last year was so different than his situation this year that it’s not a relevant comparison. Last year’s Wentz barely played in the preseason and he was named starter 8 days before the opener. Once teams got tape on him and adapted his struggles. Add the struggles with the OL and being a rookie and it’s no suprise he regressed.
This year teams have all the tape they need on Wentz and they are still struggling to rattle him. He is a far better player this year than last.
I’m gonna temper my expectations. Feel free to go nuts 🙂
Eh, he’s had a few that were dropped, too. But overall he does look better than last year.
I don’t recall any that were straight dropped. He’s thrown a few 50/50 balls but his WRs did their job. Not bad decisions.
Are we done with the bashing over the Blount signing now?
Amazing what some steady usage of a rhythm back does for his production.
Have to admit I was starting to get nervous before last week, that my banging on the Blount drum was a bad call.
he looks so much better. He looked so slow and flat in week 1 ( and didn’t show much in the off season either), was getting those Murray vibes where I thought he got too many carries last season and we paid a guy with dead legs. I’m sold now, so lets stash him away for winter. Save them legs!
Who was bashing the signing?
Not Tommy, but too many fans with zero patience.
The Eagles are 3-1 at the quarter pole at the season having played 3 games away, with a depleted secondary and missing their best Defender on the field and people are still complaining about giving up too many chunk plays.
Welcome to Negadelphia.
We’re entitled to laugher wins, not nail-biters, vs. winless teams. I want other fan bases so upset at being blown out by the Eagles that they renounce their teams. and just forfeit to us in the future.
You’re not entitled to shit.
The fuck I’m not.
Nail biters are so much more fun.. and the way to build a battle tested team.
We’ve had two so far this year, I’m good for a few weeks with some easy wins instead.
At least we have a better record than the Cheatriots.
I still can’t believe they lost today.
I’m still smiling
Normally I would be, but I don’t enjoy seeing all of the Cam fluffers come out of hiding. I like when Denver bashed them into oblivion. Hopfeully Cox is back for that game and can body slam him back into passing irrelevancy.
All we need now is a Foreskin loss for a perfect weekend.
With huge stat days for Hill, Kelce, and Hunt!
Need 22 from Hunt!
You deserve 32 with him. Maybe even 42.
Their defense is putrid. Car has looked so bad on offense all season.
Maybe they’ll give us something for Curry!
Healthy to discuss flaws 🙂
I do think we are being a tad overly critical (myself included at times) in a game we traveled across country and never trailed in. Not to mention a statement drive at the end to put an exclamation mark on the W.
I think people consider the Chargers a garbage team because they’re 0-3. But they’ve generally played tough. Better than all the other winless teams, and several teams that have a win (looking at you Jets)
I’m going to try to enjoy the win. One of the most obnoxious groups of people in the universe are Patriots fans as they complain they didn’t dominate hard enough. The only thing worse would be doing the same thing with a team that isn’t a perennial contender. We can’t go from 1-7 on the road last year, be luke warm on the team all offseason expecting 9-7, then turn around and act like Patriot fans.
Speaking of the Patriots and Patriots fans
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/simpsons/images/e/e9/Nelson_Ha-Ha.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20121205194057
Did any of you make it there today? That was amazing to see our fans take over that “stadium.” You knew that it was going to be a hype crowd due to how expensive seats became on stub hub going into the game, but I had no idea it would be that % of Eagles fans.
I didn’t.
But the clown who led the booing of McNabb on ’99 draft day was there.
He’s like a really bad penny. (IMHO)
“Sean from Springfield” when he calls the radio. All time doucher.
I still refer to him as “Shoulderpad Shawn”.
On a side note, the dude should be in his early 40s but he still has 2 earings in one ear. I’m surprised he wasn’t wearing Zubras and sporting a Mullet.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sTl28qiTNJ0/Rng0zM8xVKI/AAAAAAAAACk/N4UfhvwD8TA/s400/zubas.jpg
I hate that that guy gets to be the national face of Eagles fans.
Was he the face paint guy scream that it is our city now? Seems like someone I wouldn’t want to sit around.
I was there. It was a surreal scene. It was the first time I’ve ever seen an opposing stadium so wholly and utterly conquered. The Chargers fans were pretty cool in the early going, but as the game dragged on, you started getting a sense that they were humiliated by it. They were expecting a big Eagles turnout, but what they got left them stunned, and I think more than a little jealous.
It’s one of hose memories that just gets better and better the more I think about it. Our hapless, ringless little team has the kind of fan base other cities can only dream about. The whole league saw that today. It was great to be a part of it.
I just checked the playoff standings on ESPN…………..we’re the #1 seed in the NFC! HOME FIELD BABY!
Quiet you.
Ha. If my comments had any impact on the team, we’d be on a 300 game winning streak.
Behind the running prowess of Raheem Mostert?
Total collapse? Hahaha. Did you enjoy the game Dragon?
Marcus Smith sighting
Amazing what 3-4 DC who isn’t short bus Billy Davis can do with a 3-4 player who can be used in a creative way.
To be fair, it took 2 of the 3 guys getting hurt for him to get on the field.
yeah, but Seattle found a way to use him.
They found a way to put him on the field. Him having a use out there remains to be seen.
Remember when the last coach said TOP didn’t matter?
https://media3.giphy.com/media/cpTfPSxYUzcnm/giphy.gif
Pure idiocy.
I think what’s making me extra surly in general is that the Flyers made some really stupid roster decisions tonight based on trying to justify some dead weight contracts on the team and the Phillies can’t even tank properly and are now picking 3rd.
I’m gladly eating crow. Dude is balling this year.
https://twitter.com/PFF/status/914652790047346688
I still don’t like him lol
So the Giants lost to a last second field goal? Hmm…
Tommy writes, “When is the last time you remember the Eagles eating up that much clock to seal a game?”
Yea, when? It couldn’t have happened during the Chip years and, seriously, I can’t remember any of Andy’s teams ever pulling off that sort of drive, certainly not with all the rushing plays.
It wasn’t quite that much, but wasn’t there a game under Chip in Green Bay when we ran out 4+ minutes to end the game?
It did happen under chip Kelly and I think it was longer than 4 minutes…
Yes — 15 play drive ran out the last 9:32 in Chip’s first season. 27-13 win at Lambeau Field.

Second link has video if you want to see Foles passing to Cooper.
Wow, that is even better than I remembered!
Same here. Thanks, FairOaks.
Westbrook sliding down at the 1?
Brilliant play on Westy’s part. I can’t remember anything else about the drive.
Runyun coached him up in the huddle to do that!
Jon is my all-time #2 O lineman. Peters is #1.
Danny Watkins was number two as a lineman if you ask me.
If I wasn’t so pumped from today’s win I’d be pissed you brought up his name. I hated that pick from the beginning.
But it was so funny…
‘Tis true.
With the same humor, I have a pic of a Dallas Cowboys helmet inside an old toilet seat hanging in my outhouse.
Agreed remember when he broke(?) his tailbone slipping in a hot tub and didn’t miss a game
I can’t imagine being that tough.
Andy’s teams got pretty good at it there for a while. None of them had Blount though.
Torrey Smith sucks and he’s a NI GGER protester. His NI GGER ASS will be GONE after this season.
Marcus Smith with a strip sack? What is going on out there?
Jinx
Marcus Smith strip sack, fumble return for touchdown…
He beat Carson’s old LT Joe Haeg
This is the least exciting back and forth game I have seen in a while. These are not good teams.
Malik Hooker has 3 picks already. Dayumm.
Off topic — Watching the game today, a group of us were talking about Jordan Matthews and no one knew anything about his season. I did some research, and he’s not doing much. After four games: 10 receptions, 162 yds.
Did he play in all of them? He was hurt in preseason.
Yup, played in all four, with 2-3 receptions in each game. Got his first td today.
Tough situation. Late trade, early injury. Run first team.
I wonder if BUF let’s him make it to free agency.
I bet they do. They are gonna have the same issue we did.
It’s amazing how the Bills can’t even tank right.
It’s too bad. He actually probably could have helped out here.
https://youtu.be/y9xnlE6WUP0
Man, so DeShaun Watson put up some nice numbers today. With him, and Wentz, Goff, Mariota, Winston, the position looks to possibly have some nice talent going forward.
Super happy about that win. Not happy about the last three games giving up a ton of points in the 4th quarter and almost leading to 3 losses and not 1. But yeah, like you said, a lot to be happy about and a win is a win. Excited to see what October brings.
Last time we did this, we won on Green Bay in Chip’s first year. That game was fun.
