Chargers Preview

I like to break the NFL season into quarters. Sunday is the fourth game of the season and the Eagles can be sitting at 3-1. That would be especially impressive for a team that played three road games and had to deal with serious injury issues. It may not seem like it, but this is a big game on Sunday.

I wrote a preview for

The Eagles need to run the ball. That’s not just me trying to be old school. The Chargers struggle at stopping the run. They have outstanding pass rushers. This is a team you want to pound on. Move the ball and wear down their pass rushers.

Melvin Ingram is one of those pass rushers. He’s off to a kinda decent start.

The Eagles have good OTs, but you don’t want Ingram flying off the edge all afternoon. Let the big guys mash on him and try to wear him down.

As for the Eagles DL…

Hamilton had a terrific summer and could have easily made the roster. That turned out to be one of the deepest parts of the team. With Fletcher Cox and Destiny Vaeao both out, adding Hamilton made sense. I hope he gets to play and has some success. Would be good to see him rewarded after a strong summer.

I’m really curious about the atmosphere.

With enough Eagles fans in the stands we know it won’t be quiet. They will be cheering or booing, but they will make noise.

Anecdotes don’t make data… but that’s a helluva trend. Why did the Chargers move again?!?

Mixed use stadium complex that is expected to appreciate in value over time. Also about 100 million dollars in tax breaks.

Basically Spanos and Kroenke are banking on this megastadium/mixed use commercial area to return a much higher yield than what they invest in it.

I was actually surprised so few tax dollars are going to be used for it. 100 million is fairly modest compared to what a few teams have received.

Of course there might also be more tax breaks in the future, I imagine the owners will try to squeeze every penny they can out of it.

I wonder how much extra the TV money is going to be with LA (x2 and then again with London in a few years) where they’re not going to worry about a beat home environment.

Football almost seems like an afterthought.

I’d be interested to read about any stadium that appreciated after 10 years.

    EDIT: not including municipal handouts.

The magical stadium that defies the laws of thermodynamics!

The only way any purely functional physical asset appreciates is if there’s some kind of market distortion such as massive tax giveaways associated with it.

There are many scandals in contemporary America but the way we shower billions of dollars of public money on sports teams is one of the biggest (and I say that as a pretty big sports fan).

I lived in San Diego for two years in grad school and the Chargers had a dedicated following there. There were issues with the stadium but they could’ve been worked out. I have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to move to LA. They’re going to be an afterthought with no fan base and that will hurt them financially over the long run. Even with revenue sharing and money they’ll make from renting out the mixed use stadium, being unable to sell out a 28K seat soccer stadium is a bad situation.

I used to kinda root for them as a second team because of my fondness for San Diego but now I hope they flop abysmally, repeatedly go 0-16, and lose Alex Spanos billions of dollars.

Very quiet here the night before… Are people nervous?

  9. 9 Guy Media said at 8:12 AM on October 1st, 2017:

No, just old(er) and tired. After seeing us go punch for punch with KC a few weeks ago and KC running LA out of their home “stadium”, I’m fired up for a big win or ever bigger recriminations if we don’t.

  10. 10 daveH said at 2:16 PM on October 1st, 2017:

If lid to see us play a strong game and beat a team that we should Definitely beat … ha!: yes I’m nervous!

Don’t apologize, old school was good enough to get us all to this point in life!

Jason Peters is kinda going to the HOF, so I like the fact that the Chargers have to worry about our OTs.

Yeah, these aren’t the undefeated Chiefs. I’m not really interested in a loss today.

  15. 15 FairOaks said at 12:57 PM on October 1st, 2017:

One issue is that the game is not on in many markets, so out-of-Philly folks may not be able to see the game.

I can’t. .so I’ll be reading the Igglesblitz comments section for any info i can get

  17. 17 xeynon said at 12:56 PM on October 1st, 2017:

The Chargers have the third worst record in football over the last 3 years IIRC. People tend to overlook it because they still have Philip Rivers, but this is a bad team. They’re also playing in a tiny stadium with no fans and a home market that doesn’t care about them. This is a game the Eagles, if they’re ready to take the next step into playoff contention, should win. The big risk is a letdown.

I expect they’ll try the same game plan the Giants did last week with lots of short drops and quick passes to neutralize our pass rush. I think, however, that we’ll be able to counter that with press coverage more effectively since they don’t have any receivers nearly as explosive as Beckham (or even Shepard) on their roster.

On the other side of the ball, they just need to run the ball, beat up Bosa and Ingram to neutralize the pass rush, and set up play action and they should be fine. Neither the Chargers’ run defense nor their secondary are very good so as long as we keep Wentz upright we should be able to move the ball.

The Rams are killing me. Hands to the face negates drive ending sack. Dropped interception in the endzone. Then whatever the hell Ogletree was doing on Elliot on the sideline there.

  25. 25 BobSmith77 said at 2:26 PM on October 1st, 2017:

Peters needs to play through his ankle injury today. If he misses a lot if snaps or is out early, I don’t see the Eagles winning this game.

  26. 26 BobSmith77 said at 2:28 PM on October 1st, 2017:

It is basically going to be a home game for the Eagles. Bet the crowd is 60/40 or 70/30 for the Eagles

  27. 27 BobSmith77 said at 2:30 PM on October 1st, 2017:

Watching what is a completely healthy Pats defense get lite up by the anemic Panthers’ offense in the 1st half was fun.

Not an elite team with a defensive this shaky and especially a secondary this shoddy. There pass rush has been pretty nonexistent again.

  28. 28 BobSmith77 said at 2:36 PM on October 1st, 2017:

If the Eagles want to make the playoffs, they need to win ok the road this year including this game. Rivers gets more respect than Eli but has been a big choker in the playoffs and isn’t really any better than Eli at this point.

If Cox had been healthy, the Eagles win this game today but it feels like a toss up.

  29. 29 SteveH said at 2:38 PM on October 1st, 2017:

The Rams game feels kind of gross because of how bad their defense has been, but amazingly only down 8 at the half. Having the Cows get upset going into the birds game would be a real feel good burn.

  32. 32 SteveH said at 2:44 PM on October 1st, 2017:

I’m guessing Bilicheck wouldn’t figured out a way to manipulate his snaps so he was at about 49% of them anyhow.

  33. 33 scratcherk said at 3:24 PM on October 1st, 2017:

sounded like he was going to start and they like him

  34. 34 FairOaks said at 3:10 PM on October 1st, 2017:

He injured a groin a couple games back, then was inactive last week for it. Sounds like he re-injured it.

  35. 35 GermanEagle said at 3:01 PM on October 1st, 2017:

Yeah Dak is not the real deal…

  36. 36 FairOaks said at 3:06 PM on October 1st, 2017:

We’ll see. He’s got McNabb size and really good escapability. He’s not as good a runner, but is still good, and a good arm. Right now if you force him to stay in the pocket he won’t beat you, but he’ll have a couple years behind a good line to figure stuff out and improve. They will need a running game during that time, but seems like they will have that against most teams.

We can hope he will end up as good-but-not-great of the type which doesn’t let you get deep in the playoffs.

  37. 37 Mitchell said at 3:09 PM on October 1st, 2017:

From what Ive seen, under pressure, his accuracy is pretty awful.

  38. 38 FairOaks said at 3:12 PM on October 1st, 2017:

If he escapes the pressure, he’s tough. But yeah, the best approach may be Cunningham-like — keep him in the pocket to make him beat you with passing skills, and don’t necessarily go for the quick sack.

  39. 39 BobSmith77 said at 3:08 PM on October 1st, 2017:

How was he played that poorly today? Don’t get how much flak he gets on here given what he has done including today.

  40. 40 SteveH said at 3:09 PM on October 1st, 2017:

Fuck Dak, I hope Dallas commits to him bigtime.

  41. 41 Sean Stott said at 3:07 PM on October 1st, 2017:

I’m at the game outside. There are way more eagles fans than chargers. It’s sad!

    Go birds!

  43. 43 SteveH said at 3:14 PM on October 1st, 2017:

That’s the 2nd dropped interception from Dak today. Talib dropped 2 more against him a couple weeks ago. I don’t think Dak is shit, he must butter up the ball before he throws it because people just can’t come down with these interceptions even the easy ones.

  44. 44 SteveH said at 3:21 PM on October 1st, 2017:

  55. 55 BobSmith77 said at 4:05 PM on October 1st, 2017:

Pats’ defense is a sieve. They have the name guys in the secondary and they played like garbage today.
