Early But Not Too Early

We are not even at midseason so talking about the standings is premature, right? You can’t take a serious look at things, but there isn’t anything wrong with maybe taking a quick peek.

I bring this up because the WAS-PHI game gives the Eagles a key opportunity to help themselves.

PHI 5-1
WAS 3-2
DAL 3-3
NYG Irrelevant

If the Eagles can win this game, they’ll be up 2.5 games in the division. That doesn’t guarantee them anything, but every win is important. The NFL season only has 16 games so each W puts you closer to where you want to be.

There is also the added bonus that the Eagles would be 3-0 in the division and would have a sweep of the Skins. If things went horribly wrong down the stretch, the Eagles would have that advantage over the Skins should they need it.

A win would also keep the Eagles with the best record in the NFL and in the running for the top seed in the NFC.

These are all good things, but they require the Eagles to win. Can the Eagles do that?

That certainly sounds favorable, especially when you factor in that Josh Norman is out.

One of the simple keys to this game will be the Red Zone. The Eagles are 4th in RZ percentage while the Skins are just 25th. If you can score TDs while forcing them to kick FGs, you’re going to win. The Eagles only gave up 10 offensive points in the opener (other TD came on the Ryan Kerrigan INT). This defense shut down WAS once so they can do it again.

When it comes to situational football, the Eagles have been great. Beyond the impressive RZ figure, they are the top 3rd down offense in the league. Football games usually come down to key moments. The Eagles have thrived in those situations so far this year. If they keep that up, this is going to be a fun season.

Carson Wentz is a huge part of that. He has the physical skills to excel in those situations, but also has the aggressive mindset that you need. How often have we all groaned at Sam Bradford for dumping the ball right at the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 9? There are some situations when you have to do that, but there are others when you need to stand tall in the pocket and get the ball downfield.

It helps that Wentz has a key target like Zach Ertz for those situations. And WAS has struggled with TEs. That bodes well for Monday night. The Panthers held Ertz to just 2 catches (but both were TDs). You can bet the Eagles will want to get him the ball more than that.

Who knows…maybe Brent Celek will have a pass come his way. He’s only caught 2 passes this year. You know he’d love to have a big play in a key game like this.

I’m not sure if my Philly PTSD will ever keep me from thinking that every game is a trap game, but this team might be the ticket (for now). They are playing the most complete ball in the NFL and just seem to enjoy playing for each other and Doug and Jim. When it comes to MNF, beat that ass! Fly, Eagles, Fly!

  2. 2 Guy Media said at 5:14 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

I think a classic trap game is next week vs. 0-season San Fran and coming off of a huge domination of Washington tonight. I don’t think a division game can ever be a trap due to the rivalry nature of the game.

  3. 3 Fufina said at 7:46 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

San Fran are awful, there is no chance for us to lose at home to them.

The big game is tonight, we have the on paper match up advantage, but Washington has given us fits over the last 3 years, and while we ended up comfortable winners week 1, they had moments where they could have taken control of the game.

Win today as we go into the bye 8-1. (Denvers strength is their outside pass rush, which plays into our greatest strength – 2 elite tackles in Peters and Johnson).

  4. 4 meteorologist said at 10:39 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Denver’s strength is their CBs. And they have played lights out run defense except one game. They are hardly just their pass rush

And you JUST KNOW it wont be easy. We may lead by 2 in the final 1-minute and then we lose by a FG. Karma. Elliott may even miss a FG. I got a bad vibe too. Just no injuries tonite. Please – no injuries.

I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but I can’t help but think that we are partying too quickly. How many times has it been said that teams that are true contenders win in November and December and not in September and October?

Yes, the Eagles are playing well, but it’s way too early to proclaim them the team to beat on the NFL. To put things in proper perspective take a good look at the last two teams the Eagles beat. The Cardinals just go massacred by the LA Rams, while the Panthers got manhandled by the lowly Bears.

I am not for one second claiming the Eagles are false gold, but only trying to ask people to pause before making plans for a parade down Broad Street.

  13. 13 RC5000 said at 12:58 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Is anyone saying we’re the team to beat in the NFL? It is not too early to keep track of things but for sure it’s way too early to count our chickens yet. There’s a long way to go.

  14. 14 Philadelphian said at 9:47 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

The “experts” change their tune on a weekly basis. It’s as simple as losing your QB like the Packers did last week and if Wentz continues to take shots like he did last week, he easily could get injured.

From what I’ve read, Blount is serving this function with the team.

  17. 17 laeagle said at 3:45 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

I think fans have a right to do whatever the hell they want. No amount of partying early by fans is going to affect the performance of the team on the field. Absolutely none. As a fan, taking it “one game at a time” does nothing. It doesn’t materially change what happens at game time.

So, Eagles players: take it one game at a time, don’t get too high or too low, or whatever the cliche du jour is. Good on you. Eagles fans: do whatever the fuck you want, celebrate however much you want, whenever you want. If it’s all going to shit next week, at least you had fun the week before it all went down.

TL;DR: enough with the “take it easy” to fans. Fans’ ability to enjoy the game is the entire reason it exists.

  18. 18 laeagle said at 3:46 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Just a follow up: the constant urging of fans to “take it easy” or not “get ahead of yourselves” makes about as much sense as telling people not to enjoy long days in the summer, because in the fall, it gets dark at 5.

  19. 19 Guy Media said at 5:19 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

I am not saying don’t enjoy what’s happening now, but not to enjoy something that hasn’t happened yet.

  22. 22 ChoTime said at 12:55 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

By the same token, the people who say fans whose negativity are somehow hurting the team or are part of its problems are equally nonsensical.

  23. 23 bill said at 2:22 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

But it’s a slightly different issue. If you can’t enjoy, to whatever extent you want to, when your team is doing well – maybe you shouldn’t be a pro sports fan. Ultimately, only one team ends the season on a winning note. If your enjoyment is limited to only being exuberant when your team is that one, you’re going to waste a lot of time doing something you don’t enjoy.

The “fan behavior affects the team” stuff is irrational in both directions. But it really makes no sense to be lecturing fans on how excited they should be when their team is doing well. If you can’t enjoy those moments, it’s really just a massive waste of time.

  24. 24 ChoTime said at 2:47 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

I don’t understand the “Superbowl or bust” mentality, either, however I think there is room in following a team for a variety of different perspectives. I prefer realism to irrational exuberance, myself.

Enjoy the ride! That’s my motto. The best team in the NFC in October is the Eagles. That’s cool in October.

I’ve been impressed with Coach Pederson and how he takes the pulse of the team, keeps them focused, keeps them ready to play the next game on the schedule. I think it will be OK.

But I’m also having fun with where the team is now. I’m enjoying the ride. After we face the Niners and the Broncos this week and next week, then it’s November. Winter football. And the team will have to prove themselves all over again in November.

But it’s been a great start, and Philly fans deserve to enjoy it a little bit! It’s been a while. Go Eagles!

  45. 45 P_P_K said at 8:46 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

I’m with you. It’s especially rewarding to shut up the fans of the other East teams.

  46. 46 Fufina said at 7:56 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Last few years the teams at the top after week 6 are those that are in championships and super bowls generally. Really good teams start the season by winning and build that momentum. It is actually really rare to start of 3-3 and then go deep in the playoffs.

Can the Eagles ‘flop’ from here and end up 10-6 or 9-7? Absolutely, and if that happens we will probably be bounced in the playoffs if we make it. Reality is however we have a top 5 OL, DL, LB and S and special teams groups, top 10 QB (maybe higher) and a solid receiver group. RB and CB are weak on paper but have been playing above their talent so far… this is about as good a roster in the NFC except prehaps the Vikings and they have a gaping hole at QB

  47. 47 Philadelphian said at 9:50 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

  52. 52 Philadelphian said at 10:51 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Since when is being excited by your team, but being cautious negative? I’m not saying the Eagles are phonies, but only trying to point out that no one can know for sure how good they are.

I have been defending Pederson since he has been hired and Roseman since he took over from Kelly. If anything I constantly went after Philly com writers, as well as their posters, for being too negative.

  53. 53 P_P_K said at 8:45 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

You’re right, it’s a 16 game season and we’re still a good ways away from the playoffs. I don’t think intelligent fans are breaking out the champaign, rather, there’s more of a feeling of being pleasantly surprised. For me, I thought the Eagles were going to be a 9-7 team and Wentz would have a mediocre season. Instead, early as it is, I’m enjoying the hell out of the success of the whole team and our Franchise (caps intended) quarterback.

  54. 54 Masked Man said at 12:57 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Hey Tommy! What a difference two weeks make, huh?

Carolina lost their 2nd straight contest against the Bears on Sunday, 17-3. And the Bears won it with two defensive scores? Yuck! Meanwhile, Atlanta is on a 3-game skid and the Aaron Rodger-less Packers lost their 2nd straight game.

What’s all that mean? It means that, in two weekends, the Eagles’ top 3 NFC competitors have all disappeared from the top of the standings. The Eagles sit alone at 5-1 facing DC at home on Monday night.

Last week’s games were supposed to help us figure out IF the Eagles had a right to consider themselves among the top 2-3 teams in the conference. But this week, it’s hard to figure out which teams actually are the legitimate #2 and #3 contenders AFTER the Eagles!

IF the Eagles best Washington on Monday night, it will be no contest through 7 weeks. We’ll be trying to figure out IF the Hawks, Saints or Rams are the new class of the NFC, that is AFTER our Philadelphia Eagles. Haha! Wow.

What a difference two weeks can make. Long way to go though. Go Eagles!

  58. 58 CrackSammich said at 5:35 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Honestly, I was looking down the list of teams at the top of the NFC, and Seattle was the only one with more wins than losses that wasn’t completely screwed with injuries or wasn’t a complete head scratcher. Rams? I couldn’t tell you a thing about them. Shit, I thought Saints were dead in the water, and they’re 4-2. The scariest team might still be Vikings, because who even knows what they are without Bradford. Who knows what they are WITH Bradford, for that matter.

I keep reading these lists of opponents where it’s “Yeah, but look at the teams they beat!” and I feel like every team you do that for right now has beat a bunch of nobodies. Everyone can’t be beating up on nobodies, right? For real, either parity is finally doing its job, or there’s a massive paradigm shift in the league and we haven’t figured it out yet.

  66. 66 RC5000 said at 4:44 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Yeah cool thanks seriously. I mean that’s a very good and important point.

But the tweet was about total QB pressures ranking of the Redskins. I was referring to that and my opinion is the Redskins have not had a bad pass rush despite that ranking and the implication. I would love to know the pressure RATES and rankings.

I wasn’t meaning to say the Redskins pass rush has been as good as ours but rather saying we have a damn good pass rush most of the time and the Redskins are better in hits and sacks than us so they can’t be that bad. Furthermore, I see many saying their pass rush is the most improved unit so again , it’s hard to believe they had a bad pass rush.

Unfortunately I don’t know what the Redskins and Eagles total QB pressures are or this rate stat. Post the Eagles and Redskins pressure rate if you have it. I’m not always a fan of rankings unless I see all the rankings and the stats that go with them.

If things went horribly wrong down the stretch, the Eagles would have that advantage over the Skins should they need it.”

The Eagle’s 3rd down percentage is partly fueled by their absurd ability to convert on 3rd and (very) long situations. AS Tommy pointed out, a lot of that is Carson Wentz and his ability to hang in there and keep a play going until his receivers uncover. If/When we regress to the mean in that particular statistic, do we remain as successful?

Behind all the fanfare of the success rate on 3rd and long is the fact that the Birds have got to get better on 1st and 2nd down so we aren’t relying on our QB to be a magician (though that is REALLY fun to watch).

I am a firm believer that a big contributor to their 3rd down success is the fact that the offense knows that 4th down is just another chance for a first down. They are allowed to play with confidence, instead of all tight. Under Chip and Reid many years (probably more McNabb than Reid…?) 3rd down felt like it was a team wide anxiety attack.

Every year some team seems to come out of nowhere to make a run at the SB, and every year I wonder when will the Eagles be that team. This is the year. The stars seem to be alligning for it. This team seems built for the long haul. The players have the toughness and resilience to go deep into the playoffs. Sure they will lose a fee games, but I don’t see them crashing and burning. Go Esgles!

Saw it this morning, and also read the article. Bawled like a baby. That stuff kills me, even more so now as a parent of a child with a genetic condition.

Life is fragile. Sports are a great distraction, but at the end of the day- losing to Washington isn’t the end of the world. It’s just football.

That being said- I hope we win by 50

PS. – Wife and I are expecting a boy in March. Something else to celebrate after the Super Bowl victory parade in Philadelphia this year!

I said it last night but I think it needs to be said again: Nothing says “fire me!” like a jet sweep from the 10 inch line on 4th down.

  87. 87 Jean Souza said at 10:19 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

That is one of the dumbest plays you can figure in a situation like that.

  90. 90 Stephen E. said at 12:12 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

A jet sweep out of empty.

  92. 92 Howie Littlefinger said at 10:51 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

We don’t need this but my god do I WANT it. This team gets ZERO respect and the more national games we win the more fun it is to watch the media squirm.

  93. 93 Dude said at 11:58 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

Zero respect? Get out there and read, bud. Everyone is huffing our bobo right now. If we win tonight we’ll be #1. That’s not a secret.

  96. 96 Howie Littlefinger said at 1:11 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

I have read and a lot of it says yeah they’re in 1st but its October and Philly and hot start last year blah blah.

They also go on an indirectly say NO strong team in NFC and other BS. Meanwhile the Cowboys beat a crap 49ers team and they rave about them taking nfce. We literally took Cam and Panthers souls and get no real HYPE.

It’s overt, covert and subversive. + I’m a Philly fan and need something to be angry at. Cant be the team, players, coaches. Can’t even hate on the refs (Beat them too)

  97. 97 FairOaks said at 1:22 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

It is early. KC was the clear #1 just days ago — things can change fast. If we lose, we are in a dogfight for the division most likely. If we win, the Cowboys become the main competition, mainly because we haven’t played them yet, so they would likely still control their own destiny.

It feels like we backed into the #1 somewhat (Rodgers injury, Carolina/Atlanta looking bad for a couple games). Backing it up with a win over a Redskins team playing much better than in the opener (as we are too) would help a lot. A loss would probably send us well back in the power rankings as there are a ton of teams just one game behind us.

  98. 98 Dude said at 2:08 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

That’s just the nature of sports and sports reporting. You can’t name a winner in October.

“We are what our record says we are.” We’re a 5-1 team, with a slim lead on the division, and an even slimmer lead on the rest of the nfl. We have the most exciting QB in football, a terrifying dline, and we’re executing. All of that is subject to change.

  99. 99 A Roy said at 4:02 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

Yes, watching the Giants lose to a mediocre Seattle team and Eli struggling so badly was great.

Dallas crushing SF took some joy out of that unfortunately.

We get the chance to bury the Skins tonight and better take advantage of it. I want to see Cousins resembling a soft pretzel by halftime.

Eagles should be very hungry and have no reason for feeling cocky or self-assured. We have not won jack squat since 2008 – time to earn respect. Get it done!!

  102. 102 GermanEagle said at 12:06 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

It’s either going to be a 44-6 victory or a 0-24 loss (please refer to the respective Cowboys games!) as I don’t think it will be a close game tonight.

The Eagles will either lay the hammer or an egg tonight.

    Thank me later.

I’d bang Vinny Curry into Williams for the first 30 plays of the game, just to make that knee worse. He’s hobbled already, and we’ll need to take advantage of him being less than 100%

If we can start fast, I like our chances. But with Wentz, I never feel like we are out of a game, no matter how far down we are at the time.

  110. 110 Tom33 said at 12:56 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

Yes. I think he was physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted having given everything he could to beat the Eagles… and had nothing left for the end of the Eagles game and I believe he was so drained that it carried over to Sunday.

Same. I’ve reverted to full Eagles fan neurosis. At first I was salty because the Eagles were doing well and no one seemed to notice, nationally. Then they started skyrocketing up the power rankings, and Wentz started getting floated in MVP gambling circles, I think he was actually favored to win at somepoint last week. Now I’m a nervous wreck because it’s too much. Feels like it’s all being lifted way too high so that they can throw it down really hard the next loss we have.

  122. 122 Ryan Rambo said at 3:47 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

Yeah bro. That’s a good way to describe a lot of my feelings. Now that we’re on top, everyone is waiting for the inevitable loss. I think I’d rather lose to the 9ers than the Skins at this point. Lol

  123. 123 unhinged said at 4:10 PM on October 23rd, 2017:

Ah-hah…the neurosis that comes with having something to lose. It is a human phenomenon. It is why a greater percentage of registered Republicans vote, and it is why wealthy people are oftentimes cheap and miserable. It is hard to savor the climb when the eyes are fixed on the fall.

lol happy of course. I suppose wealthy is relative I guess, in more ways than one. I am just a white trash kid who grew up in P.G county MD, then moved out to the country where the nearest gas thing to you was a gas station 10 minutes away.

Where I sit today I consider myself wealthy, happy, and lucky as hell… to be honest with you.

  127. 127 unhinged said at 4:07 PM on October 24th, 2017:

I am genuinely impressed with your self-assessment. I could not agree with you more. We have a broad swath of our culture for whom wealth=ownership of property, and the 1% that owns more than the lower 90% is destroying any notion that happiness can be realized in any other manner.

Psychology only goes so far in a sport as challenging as NFL football, but a win tonight could leave an interesting wake. Washington will be .500, and feeling slightly desperate and angry. They host the Cowboys next sunday, who cruised to a decisive win against San Fran, which almost beat the ‘Skins. So coming off a loss to the Eagles, I like Washington’s chances next week…even on a short week. So the Cowboys watch the ‘Skins lose, and then lose to them. That would have them looking way up at the 6 -1 Birds!
