No real shockers. Seumalo was active last week, but that was a fluke. There were so many injuries the Eagles kept 8 OL active. Under Doug Pederson, they normally keep 7 guys active on gameday.

I’m really interested to see how both teams play today. Chargers are desperate to avoid 0-4. Eagles are anxious to get a win on the west coast and advance to 3-1. The last win in California came when it was a territory, not a state. Or at least it seems like that.

Run the ball on offense.

I hope I’m wrong (which is usually the case), but I’m having these bad flashbacks. We were on the road against the Bengals who had the worst rushing defense in the league, so we outsmarted them by throwing every single down (or so it seemed). Who knew NFL games could end in a tie?

BUT!
We won another tough game and did it by grinding down the last 5:30 of the clock.
And it was a west coast road game.
I’ll take a close W there any day of the week.

To be fair, at least in terms of the pass defense shortcomings, we brought in a guy through the early draft and traded for a guy, both of them were missing today.
I get that we knew Sidney Jones was out, but hopefully he fixes some of our CB issues. Also, when you basically only have guys out there who has their shortcomings like Mills and Douglas do, it gets really freaking hard to protect them with safety help and coverage schemes. When Darby gets back and if Jones gets on the field, it suddenly frees up defenders to help Mills and Douglas, when you can sorta leave at least 1 of Darby/Jones alone with a WR, hell hopefully we’ll be able to leave both of them 1 on 1 with even OBJ and other top WRs.

I think Darby is going to solve some of our pass defense woes, but we’ll still have Jalen Mills out there. Not a disastrous situation but he is vulnerable to the long ball.
I don’t think it helps that neither safety is a speedster either. We’re just a little slow across the board in the secondary I think. Darby and Jones will help that a lot.

Honestly, I’m fine with the game plan we used last week to beat the Giants until Darby and Cox get back. Play soft coverage with deep help from the safeties, don’t give up anything over the top, make tackles, and force the offense to dink-and-dunk down the field. We’ll give up ~24 points a game to a competent veteran QB like Eli or Rivers doing that, but what’s going to cost us games is big plays.

Well, our secondary got beat a variety of ways. A couple of times it was blown coverage that lead to huge chunk plays. Once it was just Douglas and Mills getting outrun for a 75 yard TD.
I just think the Chargers exploited our inexperience and general lack of talent there.
The pass rush was good early but seemed to tail off towards the end. Might have been getting tired, it was another really hot game.
Brandon Graham was really quiet, surprisingly, but he also seemed to be getting extra attention in the form of chip blocks and whatnot.
Tim Jernigan had a good game, he was really active in the first half.
Really the running game all day was solid. We got it done a variety of ways.
It seemed like our receivers really struggled to get open today – Heyward in particular was in Alshon’s pocket it seemed like all game long.

Pass rush was around Rivers all day. Not so many sacks. Went to quick throws before half. The run D on the other hand…wow they were good.
Pass pro great. Wiz > Warmack by far but Warmack felt like he got most of the snaps.
Big plays from missed tackles basically. Allowing the catch out front as intended, then missing tackle. They did get some chunk pass plays on 3rd down that were allowed to be caught and short of sticks. That certainly plays a part in final stats.
All 3 RBs had good days for sure.

Balance goes both ways. We’re not a dominant run team–We just bullied a team that is terrible against the run. Give it to Dug for doing the the smart thing and take the easy yards for once. If we become one dimensional in either direction, we’re not a good team.
