Whole Lotta Crazy

It feels funny to say the Eagles are healthy when Jason Peters, Darren Sproles, Jordan Hicks, Chris Maragos and Caleb Sturgis are all on IR. But the NFL is weird when it comes to injuries. Guys on IR are in some kind of limbo. We know they exist, but they no longer matter. The guys who do matter are the ones who can play on Sunday.

Doug Pederson said Jeffery has had a nagging ankle issue. This is more of a nuisance than a major concern. That pales in comparison to what the Cowboys are dealing with.

S Jeff Heath is officially out. That means the defense will be missing a couple of key pieces from the middle of the field, with Sean Lee also out. It sounds like Tyron Smith is going to miss the game and we know Ezekiel Elliott won’t be playing.

Having a healthy team as you go hit the heart of the season is huge. This is when you want to start to peak. The Eagles are coming off a pair of blowout wins and do seem to be trending in the right direction. Winning is good, but playing at a high level is even better. The Giants went 11-5 last year, but had a lot of ugly, close wins in there. They got to the postseason and were blown out by the Packers. The postseason will tell you who is a good team and who isn’t.

The Eagles are no fraud. This team is legit, in part because they are healthy. They have moved past the injuries and the replacements have settled into their roles, some even thriving.

Big V is settling in as the LT. He’s no Jason Peters, but has proven to be an effective starter so far. Mychal Kendricks has replaced Hicks and is playing the best football of his career. Kendricks has been a force on the field. Jake Elliott is having an amazing season. He’s doing things we have never seen an Eagles kicker do.

No one man could replace Sproles. Kenjon Barner filled his shoes as the PR. Corey Clement has taken his spot as the 3rd down back. The Eagles traded for Jay Ajayi to add a veteran RB who can be more of a workhorse. Barner has been solid as a returner. Clement just had the two best games of his young career. Ajayi looks like he could be a huge addition to the offense.

Stability is huge for a football team. You don’t want players that are in and out of the lineup. That hurts continuity. We saw that last year as Big V took over at RT and then he got hurt. That meant another change. Then Brandon Brooks missed some time. That meant a change at RG. The line was moving guys around every week and that led to a lot of problems.

The replacements have stayed healthy and played well this year. Just look at the 8-1 record and you can see the difference that makes.

*****

Speaking of injuries…

The Seattle game in a few weeks is a bit less daunting now. Two-thirds of the Legion of Boom will be watching the game, with only Earl Thomas on the field.

I can’t recall a year when so many good players got hurt. Injuries are the worst part of football.

*****

The Dallas game is on Sunday night. The Seattle game is also SNF. There is speculation the Rams game could be flexed to SNF. The Raiders game on Christmas will also be SNF.

Your Sunday afternoons will be open a lot. This is about the only downside to your team having a great season. You now have to sit and wait for the primetime game to kickoff.

*****

Sad news from the world of music today. Malcolm Young, the rhythm guitarist for AC/DC, died.

I just happened to listen to several of their songs this week on the radio and remembered just how much I love that band. They were on my mind this week because of that. I would find myself randomly singing “Whole Lotta Rosie”.

Malcolm will be missed, but not forgotten.

    With all due love, Tommy

The Eagles are not healthy. But the bloody Cowboys fans keep whining about their injuries.

    Dallas sucks.

Yup the Eagles are down several significant starters, but other existing guys have stepped up big time and the backups are playing functional football. Dallas has neither going on!

Credit Howie and Joe for working the cap and filling in holes with solid players for depth.

  4. 4 SteveH said at 7:00 PM on November 18th, 2017:

Hicks Sproles and Peters are major losses, losing Maragos matters, we lost our kicker as well, we haven’t had Darby the whole year, plus Cox was gone for 2.5 games.

It’s not the injuries that are the problem, it’s just that we did a lot better job replacing our injured guys.

Besides the Cowboys injuries only just happened now, they haven’t been dealing with them all year. They were only 5-3 even with their guys healthy.

And 1 isn’t even an injury, it’s a suspension for a knucklehead who they knew when they drafted him might run into problems.

Honestly injuries is the losers excuse, unless you’re absolutely ravaged by them, like Green Bay in the playoffs last year or Washington this year along the OL.

Do the Cowboys realize the Redskins were down 6 offensive lineman by the end of the game against them and the outcome was still up in the air near the end? They were down *6* lineman and the 1 starter they had left was playing on two sprained ankles. And the Cowboys still couldn’t put them away!!

If all it takes is 2 or 3 injuries to non-QB players and your whole team suddenly falls into the dumpster, you didn’t have a good team to begin with.

None of the personnel changes that occurred since last season ended can account for the team’s apparent acquisition of mental toughness. It is like they have undergone group hypnosis. They make mistakes and move on. They get a bad call and overcome it with consistent execution. I doubt that anybody is more shocked by this development than HR…unless it’s Jeffrey Lurie. Certainly the improvement of Wentz is a big reason for the sharp reduction in mistakes, and the shared expectation that a win will happen. But this is amazing to observe. And it just makes the space between games longer.

The real question is whether Big V is as good as Tra Thomas. If he is (and the early indicators tell me that he is), then the Eagles have their LT starter in place going forward.

I’d be much happier if we got him some competition in the draft. If we picked OL for 2 of our top 3 picks, that would be swell.

  8. 8 SteveH said at 6:30 PM on November 18th, 2017:

The upcoming draft hopefully breaks in a way that lets OL be the top priority. Peters is probably done, though maybe he has 1 year left in him, Kelce isn’t getting younger, Wizniewski has filled in nicely but could probably be upgraded… But really we need to find our stud LT of the future to bookend with Lane.

After that it’s hard to say what our needs are. Maybe linebacker if Kendricks or Bradham leaves? Safeties since Malcom is getting older?

We might in a situation where BPA is truly what we want.

I was the biggest Brandon graham stan through that era. I kept arguing that circumstances had kept him from showing what he could do, and then lo and behold, he gets into the right circumstances and becomes a force.

Ultimately, I think Earl Thomas is probably the better player than Graham, but Graham had the potential to be a pro bowl DE the whole time, which isn’t a bad choice either.

We all are quick to forget that Ajayi had 50 catches in 14 games his senior year at Boise State. As the Eagles coaches work Ajayi through the playbook learning process, I suspect they will do a lot better job of tapping into Ajayi’s pass catching skills/ability than the Dolphins coaches did.

    https://www.yahoo.com/sports/bucs-gambled-lost-believing-jameis-winston-grow-225004641.html

Here’s a really dumb article about Jameis Winston. I really despise the sportswriter/sports organization cliche of characterizing sexual assault or domestic violence as an issue of “maturity”, like someone who is willing to be violent with other people need to just grow up or something.

Recasting it as a “maturity” problem deflects responsibility for their behavior, not acknowledging that we’re dealing with fully grown adults here.

I think what everyone is really saying here with “maturity” is; don’t do something that’s going to get you in trouble and make you and the organization look bad. What they’re definitely not talking about is coming to grips with their own capacity for evil and growing into human beings that behave with more integrity.

  31. 31 Guy Media said at 7:12 PM on November 18th, 2017:

And let’s not forget; Winston is a rapist and that crime was committed with plenty of maturity.

  32. 32 Dave said at 7:18 PM on November 18th, 2017:

Although I agree with your point, Winston is very childish, which is what the Yahoo article may have been driving at (albeit, in the wrong manner). Case in point, his batshit crazy ” how many people wanna eat a W tonight” pregame pep talk. DeSean is standing there looking at him like he is nuts.

    https://youtu.be/NWFHGKAR9gU

  33. 33 SteveH said at 8:40 PM on November 18th, 2017:

I think the problem is that these writers and people within in the organization seem to think that the cure for someone who sexually assaults people or commit domestic violence is just a dose of good old “maturing” or “growing up”, which simultaneously doubles as a sort of excuse for their behavior.

“Oh they’re just immature, they need to grow up.” As they continue to be enabled by both their organizations and our culture that confers special status upon sports stars and celebrities. If he was a bottom of the roster type guy he’d be in jail right now.

  42. 42 laeagle said at 5:13 AM on November 19th, 2017:

For all the flak the team caught about the “emotional intelligence” stuff, it seems now like it was a good idea to hire someone who could actually lead and interact with the people he’s paid to coach. Funny that Gase, Kelly, and McDermott (as a young DC) don’t seem to think that way. They think that scheme is more important than leading and managing the people paid to execute the scheme. And it looks like that’s a job-killing mentality.

  50. 50 Guy Media said at 9:57 PM on November 18th, 2017:

It wasn’t stifling defense that had the Sixers miss that many open looks. Again, that big of a lead at halftime could have been maintained with more makes of wide open baskets.

  51. 51 Masked Man said at 11:14 PM on November 18th, 2017:

I’m just having the feeling here that the Eagles rushing game is going to blow Dallas out of their own stadium tomorrow. Nobody has seen much of the Ajayi package yet.

And I know that Blount is going to be ticked off at the Cowboys when he walks on the field. Then Clement is going to be like, I’m just a rookie but I don’t plan on being outshined.

And Carson might complete 7 passes for 20 TDs and about 140 points in the first half. And then sit out the second half. He’ll let Foles go bombs away the rest of the game.

But seriously, I think Doug will strike fear in the league with a blistering run game. It’s unscouted. Half time we’re up 21-3. Final score 38-13 Eagles!

Apparently Darby was present during Winston’s college allegation as well. I withdraw my statements a couple days ago about there being no obviously grimy guys on the team. Allegedly.

  82. 82 Henly125 said at 1:43 PM on November 19th, 2017:

I’ve become a bit suspicious about Darby now that this has occurred. I’m not too familiar with that happened with Jameis’ college case, but the trend is a bit weird..

  83. 83 CrackSammich said at 2:37 PM on November 19th, 2017:

The best thing you can say about Jameis is that he consistently puts himself in stupid and terrible situations. The worst, obviously, is that he’s a sexual predator and thief.

And then Darby hangs out with this guy and stands up for him. Not fucking smart.

Your week 11 rooting guide. You’re welcome. (Will probably repost to Tommy’s next thread – since he always posts 5 minutes after I put time into a post here.)

The longest, most horrible bye week ever finally ends tonight. Why horrible? We had to wait that frickin’ long to watch the Eagles again. And Dallas sucks.

Tampa Bay (3-6) v Miami (4-5). Dolphins. All kinds of yuck here. Can’t believe Miami is still in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Detroit (5-4) v Chicago (3-6). Lions. I’m torn here. Detroit is in the playoff hunt, so we’d normally want them to go down. Da Bears are no threat to anyone except themselves. However, if Detroit keeps it rolling they have a win over GB and thus are a threat to knock the Packers down on tiebreakers. That means keeping Aaron Rodgers from returning to the playoffs. Very important the Packers do not go to the playoffs with ARod.

Jacksonville (6-3) v. Cleveland (0-9). Jaguars. Cleveland needs to maintain their draft position versus the Giants. Jacksonville is also one of those odd teams that might be able to pull off an upset down the road against the New England* Evil Empire or Pittsburgh.

Baltimore (4-5) v. Green Bay (5-4). Ravens. Pack must go down.

Arizona (4-5) v. Houston (3-6). Cardinals. I’m going with Arizona here because I don’t want them getting a decent QB in the draft. Arians is smart enough and, given time, I could see him rebuilding a strong contender if he gets a QB.

LA Rams (7-2) v. Minnesota (7-2). LA Rams. We could have a 2 game lead on the loser if we take care of business in Dallas tonight. So, where would you least like to play come January should we drop a couple? I say Minnesota. They have fans. If we have to go to LA to win a playoff game, I like our chances there versus Minnesota where it will be obnoxiously loud. We also control our destiny versus the Rams with that game coming up. With a potential 2 game lead on both and New Orleans facing a tough schedule the remainder of the season, we could be resting guys by week 16.

Washington (4-5) v. New Orleans (7-2). Washington. New Orleans is a real threat. Have no desire to play there is January.

Kansas City (6-3) v. NY Giants (1-8). Chiefs. Hoping Big Red can take down the Cheatriots* and/or Pittsburgh later on. Plus I really enjoy laughing at the Giants. OTOH, a NY win worsens their draft position, but no matter what, nothing can save McAdoo now. He’s a dead man walking. I really enjoy talking to Giants fans these days. Is that wrong? Nope. Had to talk to them throughout Chip Kelly’s last dumpster fire season. Serves them right.

Buffalo (5-4) v. LA Chargers. Bills. Doesn’t really matter. Maybe Sean & LeSean can help us out and beat up the Patri*ts at least once this year.

Cincinnati (3-6) v. Denver (3-6). Cincinnati. Let Denver get in position to grab a decent QB. Much better a good one go there than NY Giants or within our conference.

New England (7-2) v. Oakland (3-6) in Mexico. Oakland. Rebellions are built on hope.

Atlanta (5-4) v. Seattle (6-3). Atlanta. I am not sure which of these two is the more dangerous down the road. But if all sorts of weird stuff happens, anything that helps prevent a January visit to Seattle is a good thing.

The 2017 Rule Book. If you can’t remember all that above, the general guidelines are as follows in order of importance.

    1) GO EAGLES!

    1a) Dallas sucks.

    2) Division rivals must not win, except in rare instances. E.g. facing each other with one of them threatening to make the playoffs.

    3) Down with the rest of the NFC.

    4) The Patriots cheat; AND

    5) Steelers fans do not deserve anything good to happen to them ever again.

    Great stuff.

The Browns/Giants draft positioning makes for an interesting nature vs. nurture debate.

If you believe the nature of the guys drafted by Cleveland doom them to bust, then you should want the Giants to pick before the Browns remove a bust from the pool.

If you believe the environment in which the Browns fail to develop players create busts, then you should root for the Browns to pick before NY.

Also, if we want the Browns to lose, shouldn’t we also start to hope the Giants win a few? Or do we reserve that for NFCE opponents?

1). We talk a lot about overcoming injuries (rightfully so). I give DP credit for blocking out the noise and shutting up his doubters. Between the Schwartz coupe and him apparently being the least qualified coach in NFL history, he could have let them be distractions. Instead he silenced his haters.

2). I spent some time looking at coaches as possible replacements for any coaches we may lose. Is there a more no-brainer hire than Steve Spagnuolo if Schwartz gets a head coaching gig?

They have improved on defense a lot this year. Lattimore has reportedly been everything hoped for, and they picked a safety in the second round who has been starting. Not dominant, but not the disaster which has sunk their last few seasons. Brees is still Brees and he just needs a functional defense.

  140. 140 meteorologist said at 4:41 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Seems like the classic dome team. I think they will have trouble winning in January

I like Brees as much as the next guy but they always feel like the old Manning teams that had regular season success only to be exposed when it matters. I hope they come here and we send them packing.

Nobody scarier in NFL than our birds

  142. 142 FairOaks said at 7:02 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Brees has ended our playoffs twice. The really accurate QBs have been the Eagles’ downfall quite often. I think we are much better equipped to deal with them than the other years, but it’s still a concern — and I particularly don’t want to play them in their dome. Want to play them in Philly if it comes to that. They honestly are doing much better on the road than they have been — having a decent defense and a running game (Kamara) helps a ton there — but would still much rather it be in Philly. And they are one game behind us, and we don’t play them.

We are going to have to play good teams in the playoffs — so mainly rooting for home field when we do. Thus, teams close to us, I’d rather lose. Those teams will play each other some, so there is definite chances they will yet lose, and everything will be fine.

Vikings are indeed good, though they may derail their season with Bridgewater yet.

As planned. Now they’re gonna be the #3 pick and still take Saquon Barkley..

  183. 183 Insomniac said at 4:23 PM on November 19th, 2017:

The Skins are a better team than their record says but they’re still the Skins.

  184. 184 Tumtum said at 4:24 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Their record when not playing us aint bad.

  185. 185 Insomniac said at 4:25 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Yup, I think they’re better than the Cowgirls without Zeke.

  186. 186 RC5000 said at 4:27 PM on November 19th, 2017:

They’re mediocre. They fold up too much.

  187. 187 Howie Littlefinger said at 4:29 PM on November 19th, 2017:

They find a way to lose games they could or should win.

Thats the definition of a mediocre team. I also think Cousins wants to keep his streak of losing to winning team intact

  188. 188 Insomniac said at 4:38 PM on November 19th, 2017:

They can compete with good teams, they just can’t really keep up until the end.

  189. 189 Someguy77 said at 5:04 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Yup. Haven’t been able to make 1-2 key plays in a bunch of their losses and ended up on the wrong side of the win-loss column.

Reminds me a bit of the Eagles’ last year in too many games that went the wrong way after the 3-0 start.

  190. 190 Tumtum said at 4:24 PM on November 19th, 2017:

so hot they almost lost to the Redskins

  198. 198 Masked Man said at 4:38 PM on November 19th, 2017:

At this point, I would prefer not to run into Payton and Brees and the Saints in the playoffs. The reason is that they have been there many times and can do stuff like that in big games.

Ugly win but a big win by the Saints. Bring on the Rams, the Falcons, the Hawks or whoever else. Go Eagles!

  199. 199 Insomniac said at 4:42 PM on November 19th, 2017:

We match up against the Rams the best. Vikings are a close second. The Saints? If we don’t have the lead then I don’t expect us to take it. They have the tools to explode for points and to maintain a lead.

  200. 200 Masked Man said at 5:06 PM on November 19th, 2017:

The Saints are dangerous running and passing now. But their defense showed some weakness today. I think they would need to win a shoot out in order to win.

We would have to slow them down on offense and also cool them off with a big Time of Possession edge.

  201. 201 Howie Littlefinger said at 4:43 PM on November 19th, 2017:

    NOPE

that’s how they all feel about us. Shut that run down. We can make plays on O, D, and S/T. Take away one player and we can go to 4 others.

Wentz hasn’t even had a 100 yard receiver yet this year!

  202. 202 Someguy77 said at 4:55 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Me neither especially in the Superdome.

If they do, much prefer to see old-man Brees have to come to Philly in Jan. instead and try to make some of those intermediate-longer throws in cold weather.

  203. 203 Patrick said at 5:09 PM on November 19th, 2017:

I respect the hell out of teams who play good defense in the playoffs, but if i’m choosing the team to avoid isn’t the one lead by Case Keenum or Jared Goff, but HoF Drew Brees.

To be fair, I also like the matchup better against both MIN and LA than NO. I’m confident we can shut down Goff and the Rams offense and put up points on their defense. I’m confident our defense is only slightly worse than the Vikings, but our offense is much better than their offense. I’m not that confident that our offense can put more points on the Saints D, than Drew Brees can put on ours.

If it wasn’t for all their injuries, I’d be more scared of the Seahawks than the Rams, despite the Rams probably taking that division. Panthers are such a weird team. I think they’re good, but i also think we’ll beat them 9 out of 10 times. I just like how we match up against them. Falcons aint gonna do shit. They’re collectively coming down from last years career performances and coaching aren’t good.

The most important thing, is getting home field advantage. I guess I wouldn’t hate going to LA, as I doubt they’ll get a huge advantage at home, but i’m sure as shit more comfortable in Philly than AT Vikings, Seahawks or Saints. With a win tonight, we’ve practically taken the division.

  204. 204 Masked Man said at 5:49 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Expecting the Eagles in the #1 Seed spot. Expect everybody to have to come to our stadium and play in the Philly weather in January.

But I still don’t want to see the Saints in the NFCG if possible. Expecting them in the #2 spot at this point.

Maybe their division rival Panthers will take them out at some point. The top two seeds get that bye week, and go to the NFCG with a win.

  205. 205 Dragon_Eagle said at 4:49 PM on November 19th, 2017:

  207. 207 Insomniac said at 4:53 PM on November 19th, 2017:

So why did McDermott bench Tyrod Taylor again?

  208. 208 Howie Littlefinger said at 5:00 PM on November 19th, 2017:

He is a rookie coach playing a rookie QB. This should feel familiar…

I will always have a disdain for him when he set Graham on a terrible career path after JJ died. U don’t drop ur best pass rusher into coverage, reapedly as a rookie. What a doofus

  209. 209 Dave said at 5:42 PM on November 19th, 2017:

McDermott is another defensive head coach with a crappy offensive coordinator in Rick Dennison. Regardless of whether the Bills are now tanking to get a higher draft pick and shot at a QB, I would have little faith in the organization to mentor a young QB.

  210. 210 Someguy77 said at 4:54 PM on November 19th, 2017:

It would be fascinating right now to see what gives:

Immovable rock (Eagles’ run defense) or the unstoppable force (Saints’ ground game which ran over the Redskins this week)

  211. 211 Someguy77 said at 4:58 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Keenum-Thielen is the best QB-WR duo right now in the NFL.

Just uncanny how Thielien manages to know where he needs to be and Keenum’s ability to get it to him especially on busted/plays scrambling out of the pocket.

  212. 212 Someguy77 said at 4:59 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Thielen is only on pace for 4 TDs too despite a 100 rec, 1,421 yard season pace (31st all-time in NFL history)

  213. 213 Howie Littlefinger said at 5:01 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Well I think it’s more Thielen than Keenum but man Keenum made a few “Wentz Like” plays today!

  214. 214 Someguy77 said at 5:02 PM on November 19th, 2017:

It is a bit of both. Been a while since I have seen a QB-WR have this kind of knack for finding another including on these free form plays.

  215. 215 Howie Littlefinger said at 5:05 PM on November 19th, 2017:

I’m really not trying to take away from Keenum but Thielen took more than a few short ones and made them into big plays. Diggs was invisible.

Thielen took one 65 to the house.

  216. 216 Someguy77 said at 5:07 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Don’t understand why Eagles’ fans seemed to be glad the Skins lost. Beating the Saints today would have helped out the Eagles quite a bit.

  217. 217 Masked Man said at 5:09 PM on November 19th, 2017:

No, I was rooting for the Skins big time today. Saints are dangerous. We already crushed any hopes the Skins have of playing us again.

  218. 218 Dragon_Eagle said at 5:35 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Why did the Bills start this other QB whoever he was?

  219. 219 Fufina said at 5:38 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Because for some reason their fans and front office hate Taylor? I mean he is not the solution but you have a winning record and he is a solid game manager, who can make enough plays with his legs to win you the odd game.

Go find a QB in the draft and make him beat Taylor out in camp rather than doing what they have done here.

  220. 220 Masked Man said at 5:40 PM on November 19th, 2017:

I think that ownership decided they have some building blocks, but don’t think QB Taylor will win them big games. Seems like ownership told the head coach to see what the other guy has and start making some plans for next year.

  221. 221 Dave said at 5:44 PM on November 19th, 2017:

So I’m gone all day and I see the Eli throws a crappy pass to another receiver that makes a crazy catch. Has any QB in NFL history had receivers make these kind of catches.

  222. 222 daveH said at 6:06 PM on November 19th, 2017:

    siiiiiiick catch indeed

  223. 223 SteveH said at 5:49 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Nathan Peterman… Holy shit, that might be the worst QB debut in history. 5 interceptions in 14 passes? His QBR must be -107 right now.

  224. 224 Masked Man said at 5:55 PM on November 19th, 2017:

Yikes! I just looked at that Bills box score. The Chargers got 5 picks on them? Unbelievable play by a pro QB.

Then Andy lost to the Giants? Aw man. I had Goff and Alex Smith as fantasy QBs on two of my teams because of the bye.

Goff had 9.8 points today! Yuck. And Smith was worse with 7.9 points! Weird week in football.

But I think the Eagles will roll tonight as predicted in spite of anything else going on.

  225. 225 Howie Littlefinger said at 6:00 PM on November 19th, 2017:

We keep rolling, nothing else matters

  226. 226 A_T_G said at 5:58 PM on November 19th, 2017:

On my Iggles Blitz related fantasy team, I was fed up with DEN as my defense. I dropped them this week and picked up the Chargers.

    So far, so good.

  227. 227 Masked Man said at 6:00 PM on November 19th, 2017:

I play ESPN fantasy. I grabbed the Rams D/ST due to bye week on one of my teams. Yuck. Minus 5 points today. Had Goff too due to bye. Yuck. Only 9.8 points at QB.

  228. 228 A_T_G said at 6:05 PM on November 19th, 2017:
