Darn Good Start

We had to wait and wait for some action, but the Eagles made it worth it.

I love the Maddox pick.

Maddox is 5-9, 184. That’s fine for the slot, which is where Maddox will play. He can come in and challenge for the nickel role right away. He played all four years at Pitt, picking off 8 passes and breaking up 34. Maddox played inside and outside.

He surprised me by running 4.39 at the Combine. That is explosive speed, even for a guy his size. He had a 37-inch vertical. He had a 3-cone time of 6.51, which is amazingly good. Those are excellent traits for someone who plays in the slot.

The thing I liked most about Maddox is the way he played. He is an aggressive, confident DB. He attacks and makes things happen. Maddox had 7 sacks in his career. He is a terrific blitzer. He can play the run. He plays WR screens well. He can cover short or deep. Maddox can do it all.

I think Maddox is a great pick. This kid is ultra-competitive and is a great fit for the Eagles, on and off the field.

Sweat is a very good prospect. The only real question with him was his knees. He had an ACL injury in high school and some teams had concerns about that. The Eagles medical staff gave him a good report and Sweat didn’t miss any significant time at Florida State. He played in 12, 11 and 12 games in his three years there.

Sweat is 6-5, 251. He has 35-inch arms. That makes him a really long edge rusher, which can help in getting by OTs.

There are some moments when Sweat looks great. He can be explosive off the ball and bends well for a 6-5 guy. I think lining up in the Wide-9 will be an excellent fit for him. The Eagles can bring him along slowly this year and work on getting him ready for the future.

Why add a DE to such a good DL?

It feels like Chris Long is likely to retire after this year. We don’t know if Brandon Graham will get his contract extension. We don’t know if Michael Bennett is here for multiple years. Sweat gives them a player to develop for the future. And Sweat could contribute this year, but he won’t have the pressure to come in and push for a starting role right away. The Eagles can just see how quickly he adjusts to life in the NFL. Some guys thrive right away. Most need time.

The Eagles defense was terrific in 2017, but needed some help. Maddox makes them better in the secondary and Sweat makes a deep DL even deeper. This is a passing league so improving in those areas is always a good thing.
