NFC East Update

Dallas beat Washington earlier today and now the Cowboys are atop the NFC East.

DAL 6-5
WAS 6-5
PHI 4-6
NYG 3-7

This is actually helps the Eagles. If they can win on Sunday, they’ll be one game out of first place, with one game left against Dallas and two vs the Skins.

Of course, beating the Giants won’t be as easy as we thought a few weeks back. They have won two games in a row and the Eagles are coming off the biggest loss of the Doug Pederson era.

And injuries. Wow. Injuries. It sounds like Chandon Sullivan and De’Vante Bausby will be the corners on the outside, while Cre’Von LeBlanc will play the slot. That group against Odell Beckham Jr. doesn’t sound like a very fair fight.

Someone asked me recently about whether the Eagles should have interest in Pacman Jones, who was recently cut. I said no, which really confused the person. Couldn’t the Eagles use a proven veteran like him? Jones is 35. He wasn’t playing much for the Broncos so they cut  him.

The Eagles have loaded up on older players this year and it hasn’t worked. When you’re 4-6, you go young. If the young guys pan out, great. If they struggle, so be it. This is not the time to try out washed up players.

I re-watched the second half from Sunday and thought Chandon Sullivan played pretty well. He gave up a couple of plays, but they were due more to great throws by Drew Brees than anything Sullivan did or didn’t do. I want to see Sullivan play some more.

Jordan Hicks could also be out. That would mean lots of playing time for Nigel Bradham, Kamu Grugier-Hill and Nate Gerry. Hicks has disappointed me this year. Maybe his absence will wake up Bradham and get him going. Bradham has also been disappointing. So good a year ago and so invisible now.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this game will be Carson Wentz coming off an awful performance in New Orleans. I think part of the problem down there is that he was forcing things, trying to create big plays even when they weren’t there.

The Giants don’t have a juggernaut offense so Wentz is more likely to play smarter this week. He won’t feel the same pressure to come up with big plays. Wentz is ultra-competitive so I’m sure he is dying to get back on the field and erase last week.

I’ll be shocked if he struggles two weeks in a row.

All this talk of standings won’t mean a thing if the Eagles don’t start making some plays and winning games. That’s games, with an “s”. Sunday would be a fantastic time to start.

Tim Jernigan is back on the active roster.

He will play on Sunday. It would be great for him to offer a boost to the defense.

Crazy.

I do hope Big Red gets his Super Bowl one of these days. I’ll be pulling hard for the Chiefs this year, if the Eagles somehow get eliminated.

This is wild. The very definition of average.
