Far From Perfect

The Eagles have given us a lot of reason for optimism over the past two weeks. At the same time, this team still has a long way to go. They’ll be facing first place teams over the next three weeks and must play better if they want to win those games.

I was ready to give up on this team last week when they trailed the Giants 19-3. The team simply looked dead in the water. And then they dominated the second half.

I got very down on the team on Monday night when they gave up the 90-yard TD to Adrian Peterson. How do you let a 65-year old man run for 90 yards? LBs and DBs couldn’t chase down the Ancient Mariner’s older brother. Ugh.

After that horrendous moment, Peterson ran 5 times for just 3 yards. The Eagles moved on from the mistake and tightened up their defense.

It would be great if this team was totally clicking. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The Eagles are showing us they can bounce back from bad moments. That’s important. There are going to be ups and downs. You must work through the problems and keep grinding away.

I do think the team can improve. Heck, we’ve seen signs of that the past couple of weeks. The O-line suddenly looks like the group we expected to see all year. Corey Clement can finally run faster than Rich Eisen. Darren Sproles is actually alive.

The offense is finally scoring more than 18 or 20 points in a game. They still make scoring TDs look more challenging than it should, but 53 points over the last two weeks is encouraging. They were close to putting a couple of more TDs on the board.

The D-line put a beating on Colt McCoy. I know it was Malcolm Jenkins who broke his leg, but the DL hit him a lot. Brandon Graham was terrific on Monday night. He had a sack, FF and TFL. He drew a holding call on the LT. Graham played with a lot of energy and was regularly disruptive.

The back seven still has serious issues, but there is hope. Rasul Douglas tackled well on Monday night. He can’t cover very well, but at least he is tackling. Cre’Von LeBlanc is doing a solid job in the slot. He could be good depth for the future. Nate Gerry picked off a pass. Guys in the back seven must catch the ball when it comes to them. Sidney Jones didn’t get tested much in coverage. He did struggle as a tackler.

Doug Pederson said on Monday that Jordan Hicks and Avonte Maddox are getting close and could play this week. Tim Jernigan should also play. If you can get the defense anywhere close to full strength, that will help during the final month. The defense has been outstanding in the second half of the past two games.

There are no guarantees that the Eagles will get better. It isn’t like they just beat a couple of juggernaut teams.

Still, the team has shown some positive signs. They have won consecutive games and have to be more confident than any other time this year. That kind of feeling can help bring out the best in a team. They’ll certainly need to be at their best over the final month of the season.

Pederson basically threw out a bunch of coachspeak. That’s expected.

I loved the intensity of Chris Long and his comments. If the team can find “it”, maybe this final month can be fun.
