The Postseason Picture

Every team starts the season with the goal of getting into “the tournament”. The Eagles got in and they’re as hot as any team in the league. Let’s talk about this team and some realistic postseason expectations.

Last year the Eagles were 13-3 and the #1 seed. They were playing without Carson Wentz and looked vulnerable late in the season. They were underdogs and they knew it. The team used that to motivate themselves and they went out and played at a very high level. They won the Super Bowl.

This year is both similar and different.

The Eagles didn’t clinch a playoff berth until 7 p.m. on the final Sunday of the year. This team had its share of struggles all year long, even during the 5-1 finish. The 2017 team was like a machine, finding a way to win all year long. They overcame injuries and played at a high level for most of the year. That’s very different than the current situation.

The similarities? Nick Foles is the QB and you also have this team as an underdog once again.

This isn’t disrespect or anyone hating on the Eagles. There are some legitimate holes on this team and it is very fair to question if the Eagles can overcome their issues.

I do think the players have the right attitude.

Last year is ancient history, but there is something to be said about players with championship experience having an edge when it comes to the postseason. The situation won’t be too big for the Eagles. They understand one-and-done football. They understand January pressure.

The Eagles can win the Super Bowl.

They can also lose to the Bears on Sunday.

This team is good. Foles is playing at a high level right now. The OL is playing their best football of the year. The skill players are making big plays. The run game is effective. The DL has been outstanding in recent weeks and Tim Jernigan looks like his old self. The LBs are solid. The secondary has come together in recent weeks. STs has remained solid, but unspectacular.

At the same time, the offense can disappear at times. They can make costly mistakes. Josh Adams had a killer fumble vs Houston. Foles threw bad picks against the Rams and Redskins, with both coming in scoring territory. You can’t give away points like that.

The defense can be very hot and cold. The secondary really struggles when teams get behind and go into desperation mode. Mobile QBs can give the Eagles fits.

I am interested to see how the Eagles play. This team has been in playoff mode for several weeks now. It is possible they could keep that going and win some playoff games. It is also possible the players could let up.

Last year the Eagles were in playoff mode for three weeks. That’s sustainable. This is very different. Still, this group just might be able to keep this up. They are playing good football, but they aren’t anything close to perfect. There isn’t anything they are doing that is remarkable. No one is overachieving in a way that makes you nervous.

The Eagles also aren’t benefiting from flukes. They aren’t living off turnovers. They aren’t scoring TDs on STs. They are just playing good, solid football.

I think the biggest thing for this team is to live in the moment. Don’t think about making it back to the Super Bowl. Don’t think about a rematch with the Saints. Focus on the Bears and Sunday.

There have been times this season when the Eagles seemed a little too happy with themselves. I don’t get that vibe right now, but we’ll get a better feel for that as the week goes on and players do more interviews.

I am excited to see what this team does in the playoffs. They won’t be scared of anyone.

One of the fun aspects to winning on Sunday and getting into the playoffs is getting to talk some trash about the Vikings.
