Making a Market

There is nothing simple about Nick Foles, from his up-down-up career to his current contract situation. The Eagles know they have a valuable commodity. They want to get something in return for that commodity. The trick is how to pull that off.

We got some reports yesterday.

Is Schefter right?

Chances are this report came directly from Howie Roseman and it was “leaked” to generate a market for Foles. The Eagles can trade him, but the process to do that won’t be easy. If the Eagles have serious doubts about finding a trade partner, they may have to let Foles walk in free agency and plan on a comp pick.

There are a couple of problems with the comp pick route. First, that pick would be at the end of the third round in 2020. You’d be talking about pick 100, give or take, and having to wait a year for that. The other problem is that you only get the comp pick if you don’t sign any big free agents. That would limit the Eagles options this offseason. Were they to sign a big free agent, that would offset the loss of Foles and there would be no compensation.

If a trade is at all possible, that is definitely the way to go.

Sheil Kapadia wrote a good piece on the situation.

There is going to be a limited market for Foles no matter what. He isn’t what every team is looking for and some teams know they don’t have the pieces in place to bring out the best in him.

Still, some team could look at Foles as a guy who could put them over the top. If so, he’s worth trading for. That’s the team Roseman is hoping to draw out by getting this report out in the media.

There is no guarantee this will work. Back in 2005 the Eagles tried to trade DT Corey Simon, who they had tagged. They worked out a deal with the Ravens, but Simon wouldn’t agree to a contract. Eventually the Eagles rescinded the tag. Simon signed with the Colts and the Eagles go nothing for him.

The Eagles have two things going for them. First, Foles is a QB and that makes more valuable that a typical position player. Teams do crazy things for a QB. The Vikings gave Kirk Cousins $84M guaranteed. Multiple teams have given Sam Bradford big money to come fail for them.

The other key here is that Roseman is one of the most active traders in the league. He knows how to get deals done. He got something in return for Matt Tobin and that’s impressive. Roseman has also brokered big trades. He dealt Sam Bradford a couple of years ago. He traded for Michael Bennett just a year ago.

If anyone can pull this off, it is Roseman.

Chris Long is a good football player. He’s truly special off the field.

It really makes you feel good to see someone who realizes he’s been given a lot and goes out of his way to pay it back.
