Outside the Box

Could the Eagles have interest in RB Le’Veon Bell? Could the Eagles trade for Antonio Brown?

These seem like crazy ideas to me. Bell is incredibly talented, but wants big money. The Eagles have cap issues. Spending a lot on a RB wouldn’t seem to make much sense. As for Brown, he’s one of the best WRs in the league and would offer a real boost to the Eagles offense. Brown also wants big money and brings baggage with him. The Eagles offense was great in 2017 in part because no player demanded the ball. Carson Wentz spread it around, focusing on finding the open guy. Brown would be an awkward fit in the Eagles locker room. He demands the ball.

Before I just dismiss the idea of those signings, I have to remember a year ago. I had no idea Michael Bennett would become an Eagle.

Howie Roseman is an out of the box thinker. He’s looking for talent and isn’t afraid to be creative in order to find it. Anyone can look at a list of free agents and figure out the obvious targets. Roseman will see some names that aren’t obvious. That may be someone expensive that would seem to be out of the Eagles price range. It could also be a player who has been a bust and would only cost minimum money. There could be injury concerns. Roseman is willing to take chances. He’s willing to fail.

Roseman also keeps his eyes on other rosters. He constantly talks to other teams, in part to know who might be available.

I don’t know that Roseman will be able to find another Bennett for a 5th rounder type of deal. That was pretty amazing value. You can bet that he will be looking and he will be talking as he tries to find some players to target.

Roseman always seems to come up with a surprise move or two. You won’t know if Miami is willing to trade WR Kenny Stills unless you ask. You won’t know if Tampa is willing to deal LB Lavonte David unless you talk to them. Every year we find out players are available that we didn’t exactly expect. Roseman will be active at the Combine, chatting up teams and agents. He’ll be as well-informed as anyone in the league.

Then he’ll have the challenge of putting together the offseason plan to get the Eagles back to the top.

Roseman can be too aggressive (see Golden Tate), but I would much rather have a GM that takes chances than one who plays it safe and only goes for safe moves. You just aren’t going to put together a championship roster that way.

Fortune favors the bold.

Sometimes, anyway.
