Ike, Tim and Rumors

The Eagles have been busy in recent days and that stayed true on Monday.

Seumalo is a player the coaches have been high on since picking him in the third round back in 2016. The coaches thought enough of him to make him the starting LG in the 2017 offseason. That plan didn’t work so well. Seumalo struggled mightily in his first two starts and got benched. The biggest issue was his lack of strength/power. There has never been a question about Seumalo’s athleticism. He has excellent movement skills.

Seumalo got another chance to be the starting LG in 2018 and was ready this time around. He started nine games and played well. Strength was no longer an issue. He got movement in the run game and proved to be effective when DL tried power rush moves.

One reason the coaches love Seumalo is his versatility. He can play all five positions. You don’t want Seumalo starting at LT, but if you need to put him there for part of a game, he can get the job done. Guys like that are rare. And invaluable.

One interesting aspect to Seumalo’s extension is that Jason Kelce just got one as well. Seumalo was seen as his successor because the coaches thought Seumalo’s best position would be center. Now that Kelce is sticking around, Seumalo will be sticking at LG for a few years. He is an ascending player and the kind of young starter you want to keep around. Good move by the Eagles.

This is no shocker. Jernigan was due a high salary. The Eagles weren’t going to pay that figure. They might negotiate with him, but Jernigan may want to hit the market and see what’s out there. Honestly, that might be best for both sides. Could be good to find out what Jernigan’s value is. There are going to be some good DTs on the market and the draft class is loaded so it is possible that the Eagles might be able to get him back at a reasonable price.

This is an interesting development.

With Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett slated to be the starting DEs, Bennett is expendable. He is 33 and due $7.2M this year. That’s not huge money for a productive pass rusher, but the Eagles need to know what their options are. They can’t keep everyone. If they could deal Bennett and get some decent compensation, that would make some sense.

The Eagles traded a fifth round pick and WR Marcus Johnson for Bennett a year ago. He actually had a better year in 2018 than 2017, despite playing less. I wonder if the Eagles could get a fourth rounder for him. Wouldn’t be higher than that. And it is possible the Eagles would have to settle for a fifth.

Are the Browns looking for a veteran pass rusher?

It makes sense the Eagles would have some interest in Duke Johnson. He is young, productive and a good pass-catcher.

Johnson is not a workhorse RB that you build around. He averages 75 carries and 59 receptions per season. He has been more of a third down player to this point. He would be a good addition to an Eagles backfield that needs help.

Johnson will turn 26 this fall. He has played in 64 straight games and also has return specialist ability.

As for the money side of things, Johnson is due base salaries of $1.8M, $3.6M and $4.65M. Bonuses would drive those figures up a bit, but you at least have an idea of Johnson’s value. He’s not cheap, but those are reasonable for a player in his prime.

For now, this is just a rumor. No idea if it is true or not.
