Frustrating Finale

The Eagles lost to the Jets in the preseason finale. No big deal, of course.

The Eagles were shutout and gained only 103 yards. Not a big deal, but not good. Rookie Clayton Thorson played himself onto the practice squad. The Eagles will cut him on Saturday and there is no way another team will claim him after a showing like that. Doug Pederson defended his QB after the game, but if you gave him some truth serum, Pederson would tell you that was a bad performance, rookie or not.

The skill players didn’t help matters. They weren’t exactly getting open and making plays.

The good news is that the Eagles defense did show up and played very well. They held the Jets to six points, 46 rushing yards and came up with a pair of INTs.

So who stood out?

Daeshon Hall had another strong game. He had a strip sack and was credited with three QB hits. He was regularly disruptive. Hall has absolutely earned the #4 DE spot this summer. Fellow DEs Josh Sweat and Shareef Miller played pretty well. Sweat had a big hit on one QB. I don’t know if Miller has done enough to make the team. He’s a complicated discussion.

DT Hassan Ridgeway had a sack and played well. Treyvon Hester really stood out. He was in the backfield a lot. Hester flashed last year and looks to have gotten even better. Rookie Kevin Wilkins was credited with four TFLs. He looked good. He’s hoping for a practice squad spot. The team is too deep at DT to keep him.

LBs T.J. Edwards and Alex Singleton both played well. They combined for 22 tackles. Both players helped their case for making the team.  I like Edwards more, but Singleton has flashed on defense and STs.

Safety Rudy Ford was hurt and didn’t play. That was disappointing. I was really hoping to see if he’s got a legit shot at making the roster. None of the CBs stood out to me.

It was an awkward night for the offense. Wendell Smallwood had an 18-yard run, but lost a fumble. Greg Ward had a 15-yard run, but didn’t catch any passes.

The OL was a combination of backups and third stringers. Brett Toth made his debut and played RT. I thought he had some good moments.

I don’t know what to make of the RB situation. I go back and forth on whether the Eagles should keep a fifth RB. And if they do, Smallwood or Josh Adams? Neither has been lights out this summer. The Eagles have seen good things from them in the past. Is that enough?

The coaches and scouts have less than 48 hours to figure out who to cut and who to keep. Howie Roseman will also meet with the pro scouts to figure out if the Eagles are interested in claiming anyone or possibly making a trade.

I don’t expect any shocking cuts, but something unexpected tends to happen on cutdown weekend.

Stay tuned.
