Final cuts are due in less than 24 hours. The Eagles already made a bunch of moves today, but none of them came as a surprise to me. Let’s start there.

Placed TE Richard Rodgers on Injured Reserve

Waived/Injured DT Aziz Shittu

Released the following players:

DE Kasim Edebali,
DE Eli Harold
LB Hayes Pullard
CB Orlando Scandrick
TE Will Tye

Waived the following players:

WR Carlton Agudosi
S Trae Elston
C Anthony Fabiano
S Deiondre’ Hall
CB Ajene Harris
CB Josh Hawkins
QB Cody Kessler
T Riley Mayfield
CB Jeremiah McKinnon
WR Marken Michel
RB Donnel Pumphrey
G Keegan Render
CB Sojourn Shelton
LB Alex Singleton
WR DeAndre Thompkins
S Jason Thompson
DT Kevin Wilkins
LB Chris Worley

Some people wondered about putting Rodgers on IR. This means he is done for the year. Rodgers has now been hurt two years in a row. I think the Eagles are ready to move on. It just didn’t work out with him.

Scandrick’s release could have surprised some. I was thoroughly unimpressed by him this summer. The Eagles could bring him back after the season opener. If they do that, his salary isn’t guaranteed for the year. They would be paying him week to week and could cut him at any time.

Singleton impressed plenty of people. I saw a try-hard guy, but not necessarily NFL talent. I will be interested to see if the Eagles try to put him on the practice squad or if he goes back to the CFL. If the Eagles go heavy at LB (6), they may not have a PS spot for one.

So here is my projected roster.

QB – 3 – Carson Wentz, Josh McCown, Nate Sudfeld

RB – 4 – Jordan Howard, Miles Sanders, Corey Clement, Darren Sproles

WR – 5 – Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson, Nelson Agholor, JJ Arecga-Whiteside, Mack Hollins

TE – 3 – Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Josh Perkins

OL – 9 – Jason Peters, Isaac Seumalo, Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks, Lane Johnson, Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Andre Dillard, Jordan Mailata, Matt Pryor

DE – 5 – Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, Vinny Curry, Daeshon Hall, Josh Sweat

DT – 5 – Fletcher Cox, Malik Jackson, Tim Jernigan, Hassan Ridgeway, Treyvon Hester

LB – 6 – Nigel Bradham, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Zach Brown, LJ Fort, Nate Gerry, TJ Edwards

S – 5 – Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Andrew Sendejo, Johnathan Cyprien, Rudy Ford

CB – 5 – Ronald Darby, Avonte Maddox, Sidney Jones, Rasul Douglas, Cre’Von LeBlanc

STs – 3 – Jake Elliott, Rick Lovato, Cameron Johnston

Who were the toughest cuts?

Shareef Miller was a 4th round pick in April. He’s been solid this summer, but the Eagles are deep at DE. People think of Daeshon Hall as some overachiever. Not at all. He was a 3rd round pick a few years back. He has big time talent. Josh Sweat is still raw, but played better than Miller this summer. It would be great to put Miller on IR if that was possible. If not, you try to get him to the practice squad.

Wendell Smallwood catches a bunch of grief from all of us, but he can run, block, catch and play STs. I have tremendous respect for grinders like him that know they aren’t going to be stars, but do everything they can to stay in the league.

I’m sure some people think I should cut Hollins and keep Greg Ward. Ward did have a better preseason. Hollins showed he can play in the league back in 2017. I’m guessing the coaches still think he can get back to that. He’s only been healthy a couple of weeks.

Brett Toth showed real potential in the Jets game, but he’s got a lot of work to do. It wouldn’t shock me for the Eagles to keep him on the roster, but since he’s been away from football I’m guessing they’ll try to get him to the practice squad.

I don’t know what to make of Rudy Ford. The Eagles traded a solid backup DT (Bruce Hector) for him. That shows me Ford is a player they genuinely wanted. He hasn’t played in a game. The Eagles believe in the importance of STs and Ford can help there. I’m also thinking about the trade for Deiondre’ Hall last year. That came out of nowhere. Could be way off on this one.

I kept TJ Edwards because Bradham isn’t 100 percent and KGH won’t be healthy for a couple more weeks. The Eagles need depth and Edwards had a good preseason. Love his instincts.

I’m nervous about CB depth. If there are any doubts about Darby for the opener, you may need to have another CB. I can’t imagine you keep Hawkins or McKinnon. You have to go for someone from another team.

*****

I would love to see this practice squad.

QB Clayton Thorson
RB Josh Adams
WR Greg Ward
WR Carlton Agudosi
TE Alex Ellis
OL Nate Herbig
OL Brett Toth
DE Shareef Miller
CB From another team
S From another team

Some of those players are here for practice, some for development.
