Shocker

I was watching the Florida-Miami game and trying to figure out which team would play less stupid and somehow win when we got a surprise announcement.

My jaw hit the floor.

Luck and the Colts looked to be on the rise after a strong season in 2018. What happened?

It sounds like injuries just wore Luck down over time. He wasn’t healthy this spring and summer and it seems like he just got tired of being hurt.

Why mention this on an Eagles blog? A couple of reasons.

First, appreciate Carson Wentz while he’s here. Wentz could play for the next decade or he could be gone sooner than you think. Franchise QBs are not easy to find. Make sure you appreciate them when you have one.

Second, the Colts now need a QB. They have Jacoby Brissett ready to take over as the starter. His backup as of now is Chad Kelly. Phillip Walker is also in the mix. I wonder if Coach Frank Reich would have interest in his former player Nate Sudfeld.

Sudfeld is a tough player to figure out. The Eagles rave about him. They were ready to go into 2019 with him as the backup despite minimal experience. They would have you believe that Sudfeld is a really good young player.

What is his future?

Wentz is the starting QB for the Eagles. I’m sure the team would love to have Sudfeld sign a deal to be his backup for the next several years. But you have to wonder if Sudfeld would be willing to do that. He would be losing any real hope of becoming a starter. If Sudfeld goes somewhere else (he is a free agent next March), he might have a chance to at least compete for a job.

The Eagles could talk to Indy about dealing him now. I know that Sudfeld has his wrist/arm injury to deal with, but that’s a minor consideration. The Colts are trying to make sure they are good enough at QB to be a playoff team. The Eagles and Colts are friendly organizations. Reich knows Sudfeld. They could work out the deal if they wanted. This injury isn’t like a knee, shoulder or ankle where you don’t really know what you might be getting.

The only way this is possible is due to the addition of Josh McCown and how well he played on Thursday night. You can be comfortable with him as your primary backup. Clayton Thorson has shown enough that you can keep him around as your young developmental QB.

This is pure speculation on my part. No rumor. Just me connecting some dots.

The Eagles most likely will keep Sudfeld and McCown and will try to get Thorson on the practice squad. They believe in having as good a group of QBs as possible.

If the team decided Sudfeld was expendable, they would be looking at a mid-round pick.

The other thing to consider is that the Colts might like Brissett as the starter and Kelly as the backup. Brissett is 26 and has some experience. Kelly is very talented, but has some off-field issues. If Reich can get him to grow up, Kelly could be really interesting.

I’m sure some of you are tired of the speculation. I get that. But this is the Eagles. Howie Roseman might be the most aggressive GM in the league. The team is deep and talented. They have cap space. That means the team will be mentioned in a lot of different situations. Unlike most teams, anything is possible.

Besides, what else are we supposed to do in August?

One memory comes to mind when I think about Andrew Luck and the Eagles.
