A Tale of Two Jalens

Eagles Nation wanted Jalen Ramsey in a big way. He is one of the best CBs in football and that’s a position where the Eagles are lacking in talent. When a stud player like Ramsey becomes available in the prime of his career, you just have to go get him. Right?

Howie Rosmean reportedly made daily calls to the Jags to see if they could work something out. That didn’t happen.

Whoa. That is a phenomenal price for a DB.

And that is the biggest reason the Eagles didn’t make this deal. They wanted Ramsey to be sure, but they just couldn’t write a blank check to the Jags. The price was just too high.

Ramsey is a very gifted player, but he does have some baggage and I think that figured into the equation. Ramsey pulled the stunt this summer with the Brinks truck at practice, showing the team he expected to be paid a fortune. He had the magazine article where he publicly ripped half the NFL.

And there was his mysterious back injury that just happened to coincide with his desire to be traded. I’m curious to see if his back magically gets better this week. Maybe Sean McVay will lay hands on him. “The crippled can now walk again!!!”

Once you get Ramsey, you also have to make him the highest paid CB in NFL history.

So you give up a lot of picks for a talented guy with some baggage and then you pay him a fortune. This is very, very different from Khalil Mack. The Bears gave up a lot to get him and then paid him a fortune, but Mack is great on the field and just as good off it. He’s a leader and good teammate. He’s coachable. That’s a guy you’re comfortable handing a ton of money to.

Ramsey is flaky now. I think you have to be a bit nervous about handing him a huge deal. Money rarely brings out the best in people.

As much as I loved the idea of Ramsey coming to the Eagles, it also made me nervous. That’s just not a guy I was comfortable pouring all those resources into.

Howie can still talk to other teams about other CBs. The trade deadline is Oct. 29th. That’s plenty of time to see who is available and also for the Eagles to get a better feel for their CB situation.

Jalen Mills will begin practicing this week. He has to be added to the roster in the next three weeks or go to IR. The Eagles think he is close to being ready to play. There were some comments about him even possibly playing this week, but that would shock me. The last game he played in was the Fog Bowl. Or the Miracle at the Meadowlands. Or was it 4th & 26? I think you get my point. He’s been gone a while. You don’t just throw that dude out there.

We don’t know how much of an answer Mills will be. He was very up and down last year and had some issues in 2017. Mills is a good tackler. He’s tough and very competitive. He has 30 pass break-ups in 39 career games. He is excellent in the Red Zone. Would Adam Thielen have beaten Mills for a TD like he did Sidney Jones on Sunday?

Mills won’t be mistaken for Ramsey any time soon, but he has started 25 games and been part of a good defense.

The Eagles would love to have Troy and Bobby out there. Or Sheldon and Lito. Or Eric Allen and Ben Smith. What they need are functional CBs and Mills has been that. He’s not someone you get excited about but he can get the job done. The Eagles never gave up 38 points with Mills on the field.

Howie and the coaches are going to have some tricky decisions coming up. Who plays? Do they make a deal? And just how aggressive are they? I’ll talk more about the trade angle after this week’s game. Let’s see if the players and coaches can fix some mistakes and if the guys coming off injury can get back on the field and help this defense.
