Game Preview – PHI at BUF

The Eagles conclude a three-game road trip when they go to Buffalo on Sunday. Normally that would be a big story line. This week, that is just a blip on the radar.

The Eagles have lost two games in a row and both by 18 points or more. Yikes, to put it mildly. The Eagles are desperate for a win. Heck, they are desperate to go play a good game, something they haven’t done since Green Bay.

In case you have been asleep, there was a bizarre situation on Friday, with Orlando Scandrick heading to TV to offer his thoughts on the Eagles. That led to a lot of discussion about the state of the team and certain players.

Key players are still injured, a running theme for the year. The last time DeSean Jackson played in a game, the Beatles were recording the White Album. At least it seems that way.

The trade deadline is quickly approaching and the Eagles remain one of the most talked about teams, even though they have yet to pull off a deal. They could trade for a DT. Or a CB. Or a WR. Or maybe a DE. I think you get the point. The Eagles are doing a lot of looking and are in the middle of a lot of rumors.

It can be easy to get lost in all the noise. The team better be focused on the Bills. That is the 5-1 Bills and the #3 defense in the league.

The Eagles defense has give up 75 points over the last two games. If they give up 35 or more to the Bills, Jim Schwartz shouldn’t be allowed on the plane ride home. Buffalo does not have a consistently good offense. The Eagles are going to load up the line of scrimmage and dare QB Josh Allen to beat them.

Allen will make some spectacular throws. He will make some big plays. If you limit those, the Bills will struggle to move the ball consistently. He is a dangerous runner. It will be interesting to see if the Eagles spy him to try to limit his running. This could be a good role for Kamu Grugier-Hill. You need someone who can run and who is a good tackler.

I don’t know what to expect of the Eagles offense. They really need to get the passing game going, but Buffalo plays great pass defense. The Bills aren’t as good vs the run.

Doug Pederson needs to open up the playbook and find a way to score some points.

Buffalo runs a lot of Cover 4 and that can be attacked, but they execute their defense very well so you can’t count on them making mistakes. This is a smart, tough, disciplined defense.

Can the Eagles get anything out of Nelson Agholor, Mack Hollins and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside?

This isn’t a make or break game, but it is pretty darn close. A loss drops you to 3-5 and really turns up the pressure. A win gets you back to .500 and buys you a week of happiness, or at least some quiet. Pederson needs to figure out how to get the best out of this team. He must push the right buttons in the locker room, call the right plays on the sideline and make the right decisions in critical situations. This is a huge game for the Eagles.

The Bills have beaten bad teams. Their one loss came to the Patriots.

We just don’t know which Eagles team will take the field in Buffalo. If the group from last week is out there, uh oh. If the good Eagles show up, they will go win this game.

We are going to find out a lot about the Eagles on Sunday.
