Game Preview – SEA at PHI

Can the Eagles do it? Can they beat Seattle? Can they beat Russell Wilson?

The Eagles last beat the Seahawks in 2008. Donovan McNabb had a monster game and his key receivers were Brent Celek and Kevin Curtis.

The QB for Seattle that day? None other than…Seneca Wallace.

Russell Wilson came to town in 2012 and hasn’t lost to the Eagles. Beating him has become a special goal for me.

For most of the 2000’s, I wanted to see the Eagles take down Peyton Manning. They lost to him in 1999, 2002 and 2006. They finally beat him in 2010 and it was glorious.

Then I wanted Tom Brady to go down. The Eagles lost to him in 2003, 2007 and 2011. They beat him in 2015 and again in Super Bowl LII. Both were glorious.

Someday, the Eagles will beat Wilson.

Sunday would be an excellent time to do it.

OFFENSE

For once, Seattle doesn’t have a juggernaut defense. That’s good news considering the Eagles have a banged up offense.

Promoting Ward sure makes you think Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor will miss the game. If so, that means Jordan Matthews, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Mack Hollins and Ward will be the receivers. That’s not exactly the ’99 Rams.

There could be an upside to that. It would force Carson Wentz to get out of his comfort zone. He can’t force the ball to Jeffery or Agholor if they don’t play. That means Wentz will have to give the young guys a chance.

It would be great to see one of them make some plays. The veteran receivers have been disappointing this year. Let’s see what the young guys can do.

It will be important to run the ball. Part of that is on the OL to block well and open holes. Part of that is on Miles Sanders, Jay Ajayi and Boston Scott to make something happen when they get the ball.

Andre Dillard will replace Lane Johnson at RT. The Eagles must be prepared to help him at times. It would also be a good time for Jason Peters to stay healthy for an entire game.

Oh yeah, and this would be a good week for Wentz to remind us why he was the #2 overall pick in the draft.

DEFENSE

Wilson is having an MVP type of season. Seattle is also running the ball really well this year. Pick your poison.

I’m sure Jim Schwartz will focus on stopping the run. The Eagles are fourth in the league in run defense so they have a legit chance to control the Seahawks ground game.

Dealing with Wilson is a whole other subject. You must have a strong pass rush against him. But your pass rushers must be disciplined. If they get too deep or get washed inside, Wilson can take off running and turn disaster into a big play.

There will be at least one or two moments in the game when Wilson will get away from an Eagles defender and I’ll be shaking with rage and telling myself I should quit watching football, this isn’t healthy. Then the Eagles will make a big play, giving me hope and sucking me right back in.

Will the Eagles spy Wilson? Kamu Grugier-Hill would make sense if they do.

Eagles CBs have been better lately and need to keep that trend going. Seattle has some very talented receivers.

A big time performance from the defense on Sunday would tell us this group is back and ready to finish the season playing their best football of the year.

*****

We’ll see if Schefter is right.

Even if Jeffery does play, I imagine he’ll have to be limited.

*****

Inspired football. That sounds like exactly what we need to see from the Eagles.

Can they deliver?
