The Moves Begin

With this being the bye week, expect the Eagles to make some moves. The roster shuffling began on Tuesday.

I wondered if Jackson would go to IR. I think the Eagles need the roster spot right now so they couldn’t afford to take a chance on him.

The Sendejo cut had to happen. If this team was 8-1 and looked like a Super Bowl contender, you could make an argument for keeping a veteran safety around. The Eagles are 5-4 and might not even make the playoffs. By letting Sendejo go, the team will get a 4th round compensatory pick. You have to make that move.

Sendejo brought physicality to the Eagles secondary, but he wasn’t a good cover guy. He made a couple of plays. He just wasn’t important enough as a role player to sacrifice the 4th round pick. Coaches and teammates did seem to love the guy.

So who will take his place as the team’s #3 safety?

Rudy Ford is the only backup safety on the roster right now. But that’s if you go by title only. Jim Schwartz believes in cross-training his DBs. Jalen Mills, Rasul Douglas and Avonte Maddox have all practiced at safety in the past couple of years.

Cre’Von LeBlanc will begin practicing soon and when that happens, Maddox could move to safety. LeBlanc would then take over in the slot. If there were an injury now, Sidney Jones could take the slot and Maddox could go to safety.

The two cuts opened up a pair of roster spots. How will the Eagles fill those?

This is a move the Eagles have to make, unless they know something we don’t. Matthews knows the playbook. He has good chemistry with Carson Wentz. Matthews can play all three WR spots. Sign this guy and he can help right away.

Matthews would not be coming here to replace DeSean as a deep threat. Matthews would be coming into be part of a WR corps. He’s more likely to win with hands and route-running than pure speed. That said, Matthews can get open downfield and make plays from time to time. He made some big plays last year for the Eagles.

It will be interesting to see what the Eagles do with the other roster spot. They could add another WR. They could add a safety. They could always consider adding another TE. I feel pretty certain they won’t be adding a DE.

There isn’t the rush of a normal week because of the bye. The Eagles can work out some players and have discussions about what they want to do. They need to make decisions in the next day or so. That gives them time to sign the players and get them ready for the Patriots game.

The Eagles don’t have great options available, but that’s to be expected. Good players generally aren’t available in early November. They can find players that will help them. The pro scouting department needs to do a great job with these moves.

*****

The Eagles need young talent for the roster so having draft picks like this is critical. The team was smart to pass on trades at the deadline.
