Looking Back at the Big Win
Posted: December 31st, 2019 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 7 Comments »The Eagles beat the Giants 34-17 on Sunday. It was impressive to see the Eagles play well in a must-win game. More than a few guys really stepped up.
Let’s take a look at some of those players.
Tim Jernigan – This is the best Jernigan has played since 2017. He was terrific. Jernigan is always tough on the inside, but he was disruptive as well on Sunday. The highlight play was his stuff of Barkley on 3rd and short. The Giants converted on fourth down, but Jernigan’s stop was still incredibly impressive. Jernigan pushed the pocket on multiple plays. He got a sack when an edge rusher penetrated and forced Jones to move. Jernigan was there to put him down. The Eagles need DTs who can do more than eat up blocks. Jernigan played like that vs the Giants and it really helped the defense.
Matt Pryor – Brandon Brooks hurt his shoulder and left the game. Pryor took over at RG and held his own. He is a big, strong player and is at his best on run plays. He can be sloppy in pass pro. There were times when he was too upright and other plays where he didn’t use his hands well, but Pryor played well overall. He got good push in the run game, against both DTs and LBs. Pryor could start this week.
Sidney Jones – Another guy forced into action due to injury. Jones took over at LCB and mostly played well. He broke up two passes and picked off another. One of those PBUs was lucky. The receiver got behind Jones and the ball was underthrown. It hit Jones in the back.
Boston Scott – Scott has been a good role player in recent weeks. That changed on Sunday when he became the workhorse RB. Scott played 55 snaps and had 23 touches. He produced 138 yards and 3 rushing TDs. The Eagles had 72 offensive snaps. Scott touched the ball on a third of those plays. It is crazy to think the team leaned on him so much in such a big game, but the young man delivered. He was ready for the moment.
Cre’Von LeBlanc – Talk about clutch. LeBlanc played his best game of the season and delivered big time. He had a third down stop and a pair of fourth down stops. LeBlanc finished the game with 8 tackles. The Eagles must find a way to keep him on the field.
Malcolm Jenkins – Sunday was his best game of the year. Played deep at times, but was most effective in the box. Jenkins had 8 tackles, a TFL, a FF and broke up a pass. He was very effective as a blitzer out of dime looks. There are times this season when I’ve been down on Jenkins. He was a difference-maker on Sunday.
Dallas Goedert – Goedert can seem like a luxury when Zach Ertz is healthy, but he was an absolute necessity with Ertz out on Sunday. Goedert caught 4 passes for 65 yards. His 28-yard catch early in the game set up a field goal. In the third quarter, Goedert made a spectacular catch on 3rd & 8 to keep alive a drive that ended in a TD.

As usual, Fran Duffy posted some great video clips from the game.
How could you NOT love watching Boston Scott!?
I love how the #Eagles have found ways to get him the ball over the last month. So much fun to study #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/tDnR4QtHuL

#Eagles TE Dallas Goedert continues to string together strong performances
OUTSTANDING catch along the sideline led to points in the third quarter, a big catch down the seam on the second drive, and multiple catches through contact … SO important for a TE #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/A4XKlJfruo

Watching Greg Ward continue to develop chemistry with Carson Wentz has been exciting. These guys were on the same page time and time again on Sunday night. Watch how early the ball is coming out on these throws and how little adjusting Ward has to do on the back end #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/tusSI77GKQ

That TD pass wasn't the only shot play from the #Eagles against the #Giants!
Loved the aggressiveness at the end of the 3Q to attack downfield, have it come back on a penalty, and then go right back to another shot on 1st-and-20. Two OUTSTANDING throws from Wentz #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/Xe978TRBLT

Boston Scott has been awesome in the screen game as well, and the #Eagles continue to find ways to get him out into the open field with guys like Jason Kelce out in front #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/aVRPkGZlrm

The entire defensive front was really stout against the run once again. Let's take a quick look at some of the DL. These guys were stout, built walls to prevent Saquon from escaping, and flowed to the football from start to finish #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/vxxTmFT9iS

Stopping the run isn't JUST about the DL though, because you need your 2nd-level defenders to be aggressive and disciplined as well. #Eagles got that in this game from TJ Edwards, Nigel Bradham, Nate Gerry & Malcolm Jenkins. Consistent across the board #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/CYlnXTtTgr

The biggest play of the day for the #Eagles on Sunday was Malcolm Jenkins knocking the ball loose from Daniel Jones to set up a two-score lead…just one example of how late movement pre-snap broke down the NYG protection schemes #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/pJdKxZrS0M

As you look at those clips, I hope you appreciate the fact that the coaching staff put together really strong gameplans. The Eagles were creative on offense and defense. They found a way to throw some new wrinkles at a team they had just faced a month ago.
The biggest thing for me is that the coaches were aggressive. They attacked. They gave players a chance to make plays and the players responded.

Carson Wentz wasn’t perfect on Sunday, but he had some great moments. His TD to Josh Perkins was a big time throw. Only an aggressive QB with a strong arm makes that throw. His pass to Deontay Burnett was a thing of beauty. Rolling to his right, Wentz let it rip and put the ball right on the money. That is a throw only a handful of QBs make.
I love the fact Wentz took some chances. His pass to Robert Davis was wiped out by a penalty, but that was still impressive. Wentz trusted his young WR to make a play, and Davis did. The third down throw to Goedert was special. There wasn’t much room to work with so Wentz put it out there to give Goedert a chance and he delivered.
Clutch performance.

One bit of news today. The Eagles put Daeshon Hall on IR. He tore his ACL on the final play on Sunday. Ugh.
The team filled his spot by signing RB Elijah Holyfield.

Holyfield is a tough, physical runner. He will break tackles on a regular basis. He’s not going down on first contact. The problem with Holyfield is that he’s slow. He ran 4.78 at the Combine and you can see that on tape.
With Miles Sanders dealing with an ankle injury, the team needed to add a RB.
Let’s hope this isn’t a sign the team is worried about Sanders playing on Sunday. They’ll need his big play ability against Seattle.

Wentz is balancing 6.8 yards per pass effort to his pass receivers, which is dead last in the NFL this season. It is hard to imagine any group winning on the road without huge plays, and the Eagles figure to struggle more than any other playoff group in this regard.
