Jim Schwartz Update

Jim Schwartz recently interviewed for the head coaching job of the Cleveland Browns. Thankfully, they decided to go in a different direction.

There was some speculation that the Browns might want to hire Schwartz as their defensive coordinator if they did hire a young offensive coach like Stefanski. Schwartz is under contract with the Eagles so the only way that could happen is if the team wanted him to go. I do not anticipate that happening.

The offseason got off to a strange start with last week’s press conference and subsequent firings so never say never. That said, I think Schwartz is a good defensive coordinator and important part of the team’s recent success. Letting him go would not make sense to me.

Schwartz has his share of critics in the media and fanbase, but the playoffs should be a good reminder of his value. The Patriots had the best defense in the league and an amazingly good pass defense. They could not stop the Titans run game and lost in the wild card round.

The Ravens run a complex defense that does a lot of blitzing. They have one of the best secondaries in the league and they lost to the Titans. They had no answer for the run game.

Buffalo and Sean McDermott had one of the best pass defenses in the league. They could not protect a 16-0 lead and lost to the Texans.

Under Schwartz, the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2017 and lost one-possession games in 2018 and 2019. The Eagles have held teams to 17 points a game in the postseason in that stretch. Only one team scored more than 20 points.

The pass defense must get better. Adjustments have to be made. But there is a lot more right that wrong with Schwartz running the defense.

The Eagles made changes to the offensive staff last week. Some wondered if there would be changes on the defensive side of the ball.

With Schwartz set to return, it will be interesting to see what happens.

The CB position has been an issue for much of Cory Undlin’s tenure in Philly so you would have to think his job would at least be heavily scrutinized. He hasn’t been given great talent to work with, but player development at that spot has been inconsistent at best.

The Browns could still be taking someone from the Eagles.

The Eagles were excited to add Berry to the front office so I’m sure they don’t want to lose him. I’m honestly not sure how much of an impact he’s had on the team to this point.

Berry was hired on Feb. 25th last year. That was only a couple of weeks from the start of free agency so I’m not sure how much impact he had on the offseason plans and acquisitions. It would be interesting to see how he would help shape this offseason’s moves.

I don’t know if anyone is the favorite for the position, but Berry will get strong consideration. He previously worked in Cleveland and seems like the kind of fit they may want.

We’ll have to wait and see how things shake out.

Howie Roseman did say previously there were going to be some additions made to the front office. I’m guessing we’ll hear about those moves this week. I have no idea what to expect.

I don’t get it. At all.

Clowney used the crown of his helmet to hit another player in the helmet. This should have been a penalty, but I can see officials missing that in the game. We watch slo-mo replays and notice small details. The officials are watching these amazing players live and at full speed.

How the NFL office can watch this and not fine Clowney is beyond me. They preach player safety and then make a decision like this. Unbelievably hypocritical.

What kind of message is the NFL sending? Hit QBs in the head and take your chances?

We’ll see if we get some kind of detailed explanation. For now, I’m just not getting it.

This just struck me as funny.

Why are the Saints players such jerks?

Sean Payton doesn’t always set the best example for his players. That certainly doesn’t help matters.

Maybe they would have more playoff success if they acknowledged a loss and tried to learn from it instead of focusing on how much better they think they are than the team that beat them.

Just a thought…
