More on Lord Byron

The Eagles desperately need help at CB. Byron Jones is the top free agent corner. It doesn’t taken Einstein to figure out this is a player the team will pursue.

Jones is not an elite player, but he will get a huge deal. The NFL is a passing league and he’s an immediate upgrade for the pass defense of a lot of teams.

Brian Baldinger put together some clips showing his ability. These aren’t just highlights. This package will give you a feel for his realistic ability. Baldy leaves some completions in there and shows the 3 TDs that were thrown on Jones. I think it is important that we deal with reality. There is no true shutdown corner available. Heck, I’m not sure if there is a true shutdown corner in the league. Stephon Gilmore is probably the closes to that.

Here is Jones in action.

His ability to stay close to receivers really jumps out to anyone who watched the 2019 Eagles. There were too many instances where receivers were wide open. Rasul Douglas and Jalen Mills lack deep speed. Ronald Darby can’t stay healthy or play the ball up high when he is healthy. Sidney Jones lacks confidence. Avonte Maddox is much better in the slot than outside.

Jimmy Bama put together a piece on free agent targets and had some good info on Jones, who was his top target for the Eagles.

This is not a case of Jones or bust. There are other options. Jones just happens to be the top choice.

Some people are afraid of him because he is going to be a former Cowboy. The Eagles have had some bad luck with former Dallas players.

DeMarco Murray

Darrin Smith

Chris Boniol

Some site had up a list of bust and threw in names like George Hegamin, Orlando Scandrick and Felix Jones. Those are terrible examples. Hegamin was a role player in Dallas that the Eagles overpaid to be a starter. Bust. Scandrick was a desperation signing at the end of his career. Jones was a declining player and cheap signing. His failure was hardly much of a surprise.

Murray got a huge deal from Chip Kelly and was supposed to be the Eagles workhorse back. Murray came to Philly strictly for the money. He never wanted to leave Dallas and it showed. He was miserable. So were those of us who watched him.

Smith was terrific in Dallas and a perfect fit for their system. Ray Rhodes wanted him to do different things in Philly and Smith struggled with that. He also got hurt, playing only 7 games. Definitely a bust.

Boniol was a great kicker for Dallas. He wasn’t anything close to that in Philly. The Eagles didn’t have good STs coaches back then, but his failure still caught me off guard. Kickers shouldn’t need perfect coaching when they are established veterans. He’s the one guy that makes you wonder if there is some kind of a Former Cowboy Curse. You can understand the failure with the other players.

The Eagles need to do their homework on Jones and make sure he would be a good fit on and off the field.

I would certainly go after him. Curse be damned.
