Eagles Lose Thrilling Shootout

I might have lied with that title. The Eagles defense showed up. Special teams showed up, for the most part. The offense? It was more like the celebrations people have these days where they drive by a house and honk or wave and then keep on moving.

The offense got off to an abysmal start.

That goes beyond embarrassing. Pathetic seems like a more appropriate word. A friend texted me and said the offense looked like that of an expansion team in the inaugural season. Ouch. And accurate.

The OL would miss a block. Then Carson Wentz would make a poor throw. A receiver would run the wrong route. When all of that got corrected, the receiver would drop the ball. Then the offense would start the cycle over again.

Ugh.

At halftime, the Eagles had run 30 plays for a total of 74 yards. Seattle star D.K. Metcalf had 7 catches for 118 yards. That kind of puts things in perspective.

The Eagles only trailed 14-6 because of timely defense. Jim Schwartz’s group had 2 TFLs, 2 sacks and 2 fourth down stops in the opening half. The defense held Seattle to 301 yards for the game, despite little help from the offense.

The Monday Night Football crew discussed the problems with the Eagles all night long. They blamed Wentz, the OL and his receivers. And all of those groups deserved the blame they got. If anything, Wentz got off a bit easy.

The group also ripped Howie Roseman and the Eagles lack of talent. They pointed out the draft misses and the lack of playmakers. They didn’t say anything unfair, just pointed out what Eagles fans have seen over the past couple of years. There just aren’t enough good players. There certainly aren’t enough difference-makers.

Doug Pederson got some criticism, but not nearly as much as Roseman and the players.

There were multiple shots of Jeffrey Lurie watching the game. He didn’t look particularly happy, nor should he. The Eagles cut the lead to 14-9 at one point, but they never really felt like they were a legit threat to the Seahawks. Lurie’s patience has to be wearing thin.

There is losing and having a tough season. That would be one thing. But then there is an embarrassing, dysfunctional mess that is causing a die-hard fanbase to become apathetic. That’s a very different story.

Yikes.

Mike is a national reporter, but came up in Philly and has strong connections. If he’s saying this, pay attention.

An ugly season continues to spiral out of control. The Eagles are 3-7-1. They have trailed by double digits in 8 of 11 games. Two of the wins came against backup QBs. This is not good at all. Even the bizarre goal of winning the wretched NFC East is slipping away.

There is good news. The Eagles would have pick #6 if the season ended tonight. I know…”But who’s going to make the pick?”. Save those takes. Be happy that the team is bottoming out and not just treading water, offering false hope.

And oh yeah. There are just five games left.

I can’t remember wanting a season to be over this bad.
