Schwartz Gone, Doug Back?

#Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz intends to allow his contract to expire and take a year off from coaching in 2021 as he contemplates retirement, per sources. https://t.co/w4O3KCUq0K

Some fans love this. I do not.
Schwartz did a good job as DC.
Eagles defense ranked 8th in EPA/play during Jim Schwartz's 5-year run.
Stubborn and frustrating at times, overall he did an excellent job. Two top-5 DVOA finishes, never lower than 17th.

Eagles have had 11 top-100 picks in the past five years. Eight have been spent on offense.
They have the third-most expensive offense in the league.
They rank 28th in offensive DVOA.
That is at the heart of their failures, not Jim Schwartz.

Thank you, Mr. K for putting the numbers together to show that Schwartz got the most out of what he was given to work with.
Schwartz wasn’t perfect to be sure, but if you could go back in time, you would find fans ripping Jim Johnson, Bud Carson and Buddy Ryan for their shortcomings. Eagles fans love defense and will gripe about anything they don’t think is good enough.
Schwartz is the only one of that group to deliver a Super Bowl. The offense was the key unit in that game, but Schwartz’s defense played very well in the first two playoff games that year. In six playoff games as DC of the Eagles, Schwartz’s units only gave up more than 20 points in one game (the SB). That is pretty darn impressive.
Let’s move away from DC for a second.
Eagles’ HC Doug Pederson is expected to return to Philadelphia next season, though he does have a meeting scheduled for Tuesday with team owner Jeffrey Lurie to discuss plans for the 2021 season, per @mortreport and me.https://t.co/x7cig9aRAx

We’ll have to wait and see how Doug’s meeting with Jeff Lurie goes on Tuesday, but this report certainly makes you think he’ll be back.
It would be crazy if the Eagles brought back Pederson and Howie Roseman, while losing Jim Schwartz. The defense was the least of my concerns. I was more focused on fixing QB/the offense and upgrading the overall talent level of the team. Ugh.
Ian Rapoport had a tweet mentioning “significant staff changes”. He didn’t offer any details. I don’t know if this is speculation or something he’s heard behind the scenes.
The Eagles have been adjusting the coaching staff since winning the Super Bowl. They can certainly make improvements, but the key is still to upgrade the talent level of this team. No matter who is calling plays/teaching players, they need more talent to work with.
Back to DC. It will be interesting to see what the Eagles do there. Matt Burke was the DL coach this year and is a Schwartz disciple. He could make sense since the roster is built for a 4-3, 1-gap scheme. He has DC experience. DBs coach Marquad Manuel also has DC experience and could be a candidate. Of course, the Eagles may want to find someone with a different set of ideas.
The only thing I’m against is hiring someone who wants to run the 3-4. This roster needs help at a lot of places already. I would hate to see them trying to make moves to find 3-4 personnel.
We’ll have plenty of time to start figuring out who we want to replace Schwartz. There is no candidate I’m in love with, but there will be some good choices. Find me someone who can generate turnovers and has a knack for developing LBs and I’ll be happy.
