Pass Catchers

The Eagles spent a second round pick on a wide receiver in 2019. They spent a first rounder on a receiver last April and then added a pair of late round receivers. The team also has a UDFA player they’ve developed over recent years into an effective role player. And they stumbled onto a receiver who looked like a star for a month in 2020.

Despite this, a lot of people think the Eagles could spend pick six on a receiver…either Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle.

An optimist might question the idea of adding a receiver.

WR Jalen Reagor
WR Travis Fulgham
WR Greg Ward (slot)

WR John Hightower
WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
WR Quez Watkins

That is a group of six receivers that are young and talented. There are certainly more questions than answers when it comes to this group, but they do have potential. If you’re going into a rebuilding season, there is an argument to be made that you should stick with this crew and see if they develop. Then you would know what you need heading into 2022.

A Doubting Thomas might have another outlook. He would point out that the only player who can completely be counted on is Ward and he averages a paltry 8.3 yards per reception in his young career.

The other players do have potential, but none of them has done anything that makes you confident they will be above average starting receivers. Reagor was 31-396-1 as a rookie. He showed good speed and athleticism at times, but looked like a rookie for most of the year. Fulgham had a dominant month and then disappeared. We’re all perplexed by his season.

Watkins and Hightower combined for 17 catches. They each had moments when they looked explosive, but there were more issues than plays made. Both were late round picks. History says they might become solid role players, but aren’t likely to become good starters. It would be great if they proved history wrong, but do you count on that happening?

More than a few fans are ready for the Eagles to dump Arcega-Whiteside. He’s got 14 catches in two years. JJAW has struggled in a huge way and has been a tremendous disappointment. The Eagles are smart to keep him around, though. The new coaching staff has a good track record with receivers. See if they can get JJAW to turn things around. I don’t think he’s ever going to be what the Eagles originally hoped, but if he can be a good role player, there is value in that. If he struggles this spring/summer, he’s gone.

Questions, questions and more questions.

The Eagles would benefit from the addition of a top talent at receiver. The passing game could use a reliable weapon. That isn’t to say that rookie receivers all pan out right away, but a top flight talent would give the team a good chance of getting immediate impact.

This receiver class is deep and talented. It is amazing that year after year, we are seeing terrific classes. Shouldn’t we run out of outstanding prospects? The passing game has exploded all over the football world and that means there are more talented receivers than ever. That fact makes it especially frustrating that the Eagles can’t seem to build a good receiver corps.

I don’t know if that is more drafting, coaching or scheme/QB play. The bottom line is that the Eagles must change this. You can’t win in today’s NFL without good receivers.

I don’t think the Eagles have to take a receiver at 6, but they do need to add a talented player to the mix. That could be a trade or free agent addition. Or the Eagles could spend a mid-round pick. They must add more talent. They need competition. The current group of receivers hasn’t earned the right to count on anything, other than a chance.

[…] Pass Catchers – Iggles BlitzThis receiver class is deep and gifted. It’s superb that yr after yr, we’re seeing terrific lessons. Shouldn’t we run out of excellent prospects? The passing sport has exploded everywhere in the soccer world and which means there are extra gifted receivers than ever. That reality makes it particularly irritating that the Eagles can’t appear to construct a great receiver corps. I don’t know if that’s extra drafting, teaching or scheme/QB play. The underside line is that the Eagles should change this. You may’t win in at the moment’s NFL with out good receivers. I don’t suppose the Eagles should take a receiver at 6, however they do want so as to add a gifted participant to the combo. That could possibly be a commerce or free agent addition. Or the Eagles might spend a mid-round choose. They need to add extra expertise. They want competitors. The present group of receivers hasn’t earned the best to rely on something, aside from an opportunity. […]
