A Different Dude

If the Eagles are focused on building around Jalen Hurts this year, that takes QB out of the running at pick six. It means the team would most likely be choosing between a cornerback and wide receiver. There is a lesser chance they go for an offensive lineman.

There is someone else to consider.

A lot of people talk about whether the Eagles will take him at six. The overlooked question…will Pitts make it to six?

Too often we get caught up in labels. Pitts is a TE, but he’s very different from other guys with the same label. That’s like saying Javon Hargrave and Aaron Donald are both DTs. It is true, but not accurate. Hargrave is a DT who lines up and does his job. Donald is a weapon. The Rams move him all over the LOS, trying to create favorable matchups.

T.J. Hockenson was picked 8th overall in 2019.

Best college year: 49 catches, 760 yards, 6 TDs, 15.5 yards per catch

Eric Ebron was picked 10th overall in 2014.

Best college year: 62 catches, 973 yards, 3 TDs, 15.7 yards per catch

Evan Engram was taken 23rd overall in 2017.

Best college year: 65 catches, 926 yards, 8 TDs, 14.2 yards per catch

That is a trio of really good NFL prospects. They have had varying degrees of success in the NFL. Watch those clips. See how talented those guys were in college.

Kyle Pitts is on a different level.

He is 6-6, 250. He runs like Engram, who was about 235 in college. Pitts looks more like a giant wide receiver than a TE. Florida moved him around to create good matchups. Defenses tried a lot of different things to stop him. Teams put talented CBs on him and Pitts still made plays.

Best college year: 43 catches, 770 yards, 12 TDs, 17.9 yards per catch

He is a true freak.

I know more than a few people hate the thought of the Eagles taking Pitts. The team already has an above average TE in Dallas Goedert. Why waste a premium pick on another TE?

This goes back to the point I made earlier. You can’t think of Pitts as just a TE. He is an offensive weapon. If the coaches embrace that idea rather than just thinking of him as part of a 2-TE offense, Pitts can be special. His potential is off the charts.

I have mixed feelings on the situation. You can find TEs all over the place. George Kittle and Travis Kelce are the two best TEs in the league. Neither was a first round pick. The flip side is that you can draft mid-round TEs for a decade and not find guys like that.

When  you have a chance to get a special prospect, you should do it. That doesn’t mean the player will pan out. Even if he does, that doesn’t guarantee team success. Calvin Johnson never came close to a Super Bowl.

Go back to what Daniel Jeremiah said.

Pitts could be a Hall of Fame player.

This isn’t just random hyperbole. Jeremiah is a former NFL scout. He knows what a good TE looks like. He sees Pitts as something different.

Something special.

The Eagles need all the picks they can get. The more frogs you kiss, the more likely you are to find a prince.

Why waste a premium decide on one other TE? This goes again to the purpose I made earlier. You may’t consider Pitts as only a TE. He’s an offensive weapon. If the coaches embrace that concept quite than simply considering of him as a part of a 2-TE offense, Pitts will be particular. His potential is off the charts. I’ve combined emotions on the state of affairs. You could find TEs far and wide. George Kittle and Travis Kelce are the 2 greatest TEs within the league. Neither was a primary spherical decide. The flip facet is you could draft mid-round TEs for a decade and never discover guys like that. When you’ve an opportunity to get a particular prospect, you need to do it. That doesn’t imply the participant will pan out. Even when he does, that doesn’t assure group success. Calvin Johnson by no means got here near a Super Bowl. […]
