Latest Watson Rumor

I should be posting thoughts on the past couple of days of Eagles Training Camp, but that takes a backseat right now. Deshaun Watson has been linked to the Eagles for a while and it feels like the situation may be heating up. From my perspective, that’s just using logic and connecting some dots. Others actually are putting info out there.

Chris isn’t an insider that breaks a lot of stories. He’s also not a guy that just posts stuff for the heck of it. We don’t know who his sources are, but I do believe him when he says he’s hearing this. Whether the sources are credible…who knows.

Jalen Hurts is off to a very mixed start in TC. He looks good at times, but also struggles more than you can be comfortable with. Consider this note from Mike Kaye after Wednesday’s practice.

Wednesday, during 11-on-11 work, Hurts threw his worst pass of the summer. He targeted (someone?) in the middle of the field and was picked off by rookie safety-turned-linebacker JaCoby Stevens near the right seam. From the sideline, it didn’t look like any offensive weapons were in the sightline of the pass, as Stevens was simply in the area and nabbed the ball.

Not ideal. Hurts did make some good throws after that so this isn’t a case of him completely stinking up the joint. He just hasn’t looked like a QB you can think of as the long term answer. He is a young player learning a new system and that’s not lost on me. You still don’t hear reports out of TC talking about how talented he is and how you can see that it is just a matter of time for him to develop into a stud QB.

Hurts has done everything asked of him, but let’s be very clear about this. Watson is one of the best QBs in the league. He is a Top 5 talent. Hurts is never going to be that level of player. I know he’s young and will get better, but guys that are special usually show you something early on. This decision would purely be about talent and Watson will have the edge in that category.

Would the Eagles really do this with the legal situation up in the air?

That’s the tough question. Big Dom is the head of Eagles security and he’s extremely good at what he does. I guarantee you he has done a lot of digging in regard to the allegations and into Watson overall. Big Dom will give his report to Howie Roseman and Jeff Lurie. It will be up to them to make the decision, but you can bet they’ll have as much info as possible.

The reason the Eagles would make the move now is a combination of things. First, the price on Watson is right.

He doesn’t want to be in Houston and they don’t want him there. He reported to camp so they can’t fine him, but he’s not practicing. This situation is a black cloud over the franchise. The sooner they move on, the better things will be down there. That organization is a complete mess. Trying to maximize the value of Watson in a trade isn’t a good idea right now.

Waiting doesn’t do the Eagles any good from a football perspective. If you are going to make a move like this, do it now so the guy can come to Philly, learn the offense and have a better transition this year.

The Eagles must feel that there aren’t going to be felony charges coming. Right now there are civil issues and there have been some criminal complaints, but no charges have been filed.

We know the Eagles just made moves this week to clear up cap space. You have to think that was done for a specific reason. If not, I’m not sure why you make those moves.

This is the weakest the Eagles QB situation has been since…1998. That isn’t lost on Roseman and Lurie. They know you need a legit QB to truly compete. They could look for one in the upcoming draft, but here is a star QB available in the prime of his career. Opportunities like this don’t come around often.

I have serious concerns as well.

Football is supposed to be a break from the challenges of real life. We obsess on something unimportant to help us get through long days. It should be something we can love…or love to hate. But it should be fun.

When you have someone with a situation like this, real life becomes part of the equation. You have to decide where you draw the line. Is this something you can handle or not? What really happened? Do we even have all the facts?

I have a lot of thinking to do. I don’t know how to feel right now.

Let’s not get too fired up since nothing has actually happened yet. We’re all just speculating right now.

Aaron is based out of Houston and has a ton of sources.

Still, this situation feels more than just hypothetical right now. I don’t know if it will happen, but this sure seems like it has passed the speculation stage and is something the Eagles are actively looking into.

[…] Latest Watson Rumor – Iggles BlitzNot perfect. Hurts did make some good throws after that so this isn’t a case of him utterly stinking up the joint. He simply hasn’t regarded like a QB you’ll be able to consider as the long run reply. He’s a younger participant studying a brand new system and that’s not misplaced on me. You continue to don’t hear experiences out of TC speaking about how proficient he’s and how one can see that it’s only a matter of time for him to develop right into a stud QB. Hurts has accomplished the whole lot requested of him, however let’s be very clear about this. Watson is without doubt one of the finest QBs within the league. He’s a High 5 expertise. Hurts is rarely going to be that degree of participant. I do know he’s younger and can get higher, however guys which might be particular normally present you one thing early on. This resolution would purely be about expertise and Watson can have the sting in that class. […]
