Camp Time

This is great because it is the beginning of football season, actual football activities on a football field while wearing football pads. Thumbs up on that. The downside of TC is the challenge of figuring out what it all means. We’ve seen plenty of guys stand out in July/August and still not make the team. We’ve also learned the hard way that the performance you see in camp isn’t always the performance you see in the regular season.
Get ready for lots of news and information.
And some of it will even be useful!
I’m not going to go over the whole roster. Plenty of people have already done that. I’m going to just throw out some things I’m thinking about as we head into TC.
JALEN WATCH
The world will be watching everything Jalen Hurts does this summer. Every good throw means the team is heading to the Super Bowl. Every bad throw means the team better spend a Top 10 pick on a QB. Such is the life of a young QB on a team with a loaded roster.
Hurts knows this and should be prepared for it. We’ll have to wait and see if the pressure bothers him at all.
One thing to keep in mind is that Huts spent the offseason working on his mechanics so it will probably take him a few practices to work out some kinks. Working on your mechanics in a limited setting is very different than doing it with blockers, receivers and defenders. The practice rep goes from being about you to being about the whole offense.
Don’t be alarmed if there are some early struggles or inconsistencies. If Hurts is struggling a month from now, get worried.
SAFETY
The Eagles have high hopes for Marcus Epps. Reasonably high, but higher than the average fan. They also like Anthony Harris and brought him back for another year. I understand bringing Epps back. Harris is frustrating, because he was mediocre last year.
Jaquiski Tartt was added this summer and gives the team depth. He could challenge for a starting spot or prove to be a good role player.
Will K’Von Wallace or Andre Chachere do anything to stand out? The Eagles would love for one of the young players/backups to emerge.
This is still a spot that makes me feel a bit nervous.
BACKUP TE
Dallas Goedert is one of the best TEs in the league. Who will be his backup?
Jack Stoll showed flashes as a rookie, but hardly did anything to indicate he’s the frontrunner for the spot. Stoll seems like more of a blocker than a receiver. Rookie Grant Calcaterra is a talented receiver. He’s got to show he can stay healthy, be a functional blocker and contribute on special teams. Noah Togiai has impressed in TC before. Can he do that again and actually win a roster spot?
JJAW is offically a TE this year. Will that save his career? Will he be moving to OT next year? If you can bulk up to 230, why not 330?
Richard Rodgers is back. Again. He’s reliable, but the team would love a younger player to win the job. Does Rodgers have the franchise record for one-year contracts yet?
REAL LINEBACKERS
The Eagles signed Kyzir White back in March. They drafted Nakobe Dean. Haason Reddick will play SAM and edge. Add this trio to TJ Edwards, Davion Taylor and Shaun Bradley. That’s the fastest, most talented set of LBs the Eagles have had in a while.
There are still questions. Why was there so little interest in White on the free agent market? Do other teams know something the Eagles don’t? Did Nakobe’s slide in the draft happen for legit reasons?
I’m optimistic and excited to see what these guys can do. I really hope they don’t make me regret that statement.
STAR WATCH
It will be fun to see AJ Brown and Jordan Davis in action. Brown is the best receiver the Eagles have had in a while. DeVonta Smith might catch him soon, but Brown is the better player for now. Davis is a big fella, but sure doesn’t move like one. His Combine performance is one of the greatest ever. I think you’ll see those movement skills this summer. I can’t stress enough that he’s not just here to eat up double-teams. Davis can be a playmaker.
FEELING GOOD
The Eagles upgraded their roster, addressing some key areas. They bring back the entire coaching staff from last year. And this is a team coming off a 9-8 season. The rebuild is ahead of schedule and they could be legit contenders this year. There is a lot of reason for optimism.
Last year there were far more questions than answers. Every mistake made you wonder if Nick Sirianni was in over his head. This year feels worlds different. Sirianni seems to have a good handle on his team and what he’s doing.
There aren’t any player controversies or contract battles going on.
History tells us things won’t stay ideal for long, but enjoy the good times when they’re here.
MISC QUESTIONS
Will Brandon Graham still be a good player? Coming off injury at his age is never easy, but BG is a tireless worker and he’s overcome injuries before.
Can Jalen Reagor find a spot on this team? As crazy as it sounds, he’s not a lock for the roster. Reagor has struggled on the field and hasn’t handled things well. There are rumors about the Eagles trying to trade him, which might be best for everyone involved.
We know Devon Allen is fast. Will that speed translate to the football field? Allen would make the offense really interesting if he can show that he belongs on an NFL field.
Is Arryn Siposs good to go? He struggled down the stretch, but the Eagles didn’t bring in competition so that shows you they believe in him. Let’s hope Siposs rewards their faith.
Is Keric Wheatfall a real person or is that just an alias Bryce Treggs uses to get invited to camps these days?
