Gameday – PHI at DET

Football season is here, and not a minute too soon. I’m tired of waiting and speculating and guessing. The Eagles have a loaded roster. I want to see what this group can actually do. Today will just be one piece of the puzzle, but it will give us some clues about the upcoming season, good or bad.

Injuries aside, Jalen Hurts is the key to the season. So what are we looking for to see if he’s truly better? Decision-making and accuracy were his two biggest issues last year. Those are the areas to focus on. One other part of his game to watch is whether he can consistently use the whole field. He focused on the right side too much last year. The middle of the field was notably absent from the passing game. AJ Brown should change that. He lives in the middle of the field and you know Hurts wants to get him the ball.

I’ve talked a lot about Hurts and Brown and Haason Reddick this offseason. There are some other players I’m excited to see. Kyzir White and TJ Edwards give the Eagles their best pair of LBs in a while. I would love to see them make some plays.

I think we’re all excited to see what Chauncey Gardner-Johnson can do. He’s the most talented safety the Eagles have had in a while.

Miles Sanders wants to have a breakout season. With the blockers in front of him and the skill players around him, that is a real possibility.

Rookie Jordan Davis won’t start, but could prove to be a key role player. It will be interesting to see what kind of effect he has on the defense.

Britain Covey will likely be the PR today, with Quez Watkins as the KOR. Covey had a good camp, but didn’t stand out to me in the preseason games. He did catch punts smoothly and has plenty of experience at that. He should be okay there.

Calcaterra sits and Togiai plays in his place. Calcaterra is more talented, but Togiai is more ready to play. He can contribute on STs, as well as being TE3.

Kyron Johnson is active. It will be interesting to see if he’s used on STs.

The Eagles are healthy. They should be ready for action. Let’s hope today is the start of a fun season. No matter what happens today, it is just one game. The Eagles looked terrific in the season opener last year and then went 1-5 after that. This is a better team and the schedule is workable so I don’t expect anything like that.

For now, let’s just focus on beating the Lions. Talk of world domination can wait until tomorrow.

Go Eagles!
