How ‘Bout Them Eagles!

The Eagles were dominant against Dallas. For a half. They led 20-3 and controlled the game at halftime. Dallas made terrific adjustments and really took it to the Eagles, eventually cutting the lead to 20-17.

More than a few people had to be ready to hit the panic button. I put down my PBR and started to reach for it. Luckily, Nick Sirianni and his players righted the ship and got the job done in the fourth quarter. The final score was 26-17.

After the lead went down to just six points, the Eagles responded in clutch fashion. They had a 13-play, 75-yard drive that ate up 7:37 and resulted in a TD. That pushed the lead to 26-17 and suddenly made time a critical factor. The Eagles ran the ball really well, even though the OL had Sua Opeta at LG and Jack Driscoll at RT. They moved the ball 46 yards on the ground to get down to the DAL 29. Jalen Hurts then hit AJ Brown on 2nd-and-10 for a gain of 22. Hurt then executed an RPO perfectly and hit DeVonta Smith for a 7-yard TD.

Boom.

That was basically game over. Dallas still kept trying, which I found rather annoying. I wanted Eagles celebrations and Jerry Jones sad faces instead of Dallas refusing to die.

The game really changed late in the first half in a couple of moments. First, Lane Johnson left with a concussion and that affected the rest of the game. Second, Dallas got a 63-yard KOR that helped them get a field goal to cut the deficit to 20-3. That long return provided a spark that seemed to wake Dallas up.

With Johnson out for the game, Driscoll took over at RT. The Eagles didn’t change the offense too much and Micah Parsons just overwhelmed him in the third quarter. That got the Eagles out of their comfort zone. They ran nine plays for just 6 yards in the third quarter. This wasn’t the finest quarter of coaching by the Eagles on offense or defense.

Just like last week, when the Eagles backs were against the wall, they came out running. That helped them to stabilize the offense and mash on the Dallas defense. The Big Sexies came to the rescue once again, opening holes and paving the way for the running game to get the job done.

The first half was complete domination by the Eagles. Things were so easy it kind of made me nervous. Sure enough, that feeling was warranted. The good news is that the Eagles had enough answers to come away with the win and advance to 6-0.

Give a lot of credit to the Eagles defense. They allowed two long drives in the second half, but came up with 3 INTs and made key plays when they were needed. The Eagles had 12 passes defensed, a crazy number for one game. James Bradberry led the way with 4 of them, one of which led to an INT by CJ Gardner-Johnson. CGJ also picked off a pass later in the game. Big Play Slay had a pick and a couple of PDs. Great game by the secondary.

We talked about this game being a test for Jalen Hurts. How would he do against a great defense? Hurts was 15-24-155 with a pair of TDs. He ran for 27 yards. No turnovers. Hurts didn’t have to throw for a bunch of yards, but he made smart decisions and made key plays in the passing game. Dallas came in as the #2 red zone defense in the league. The Eagles went 3 for 4, in part due to Hurts making good reads and good throws.

Dallas didn’t have an answer for AJ and DeVonta. They combined for 10-111-2. Brown made key plays. You can just see how valuable he is.

Dallas had only given up one rushing TD all year. Mile Sanders went 18-71-1 so they now have given up two rushing TDs. Sanders ran hard and had to fight for yards. Good game from him.

Dallas had not given up more than one TD in a game all year. The Eagles got three tonight. The Cowboys have an outstanding defense, but this was the best team and best offense they’ve faced all year. The Eagles won that battle.

There are still plenty of things to work on. Tackling was once again an issue. Kick coverage was an issue for the first time this year. Bootleg passes gave the defense real problems. All of this stuff can be improved, if not fixed.

6-0 and headed into the bye week. Life is good right now.

This win was a great way to close out an absolutely amazing weekend for Philly sports.
